I bought my 20 acres. The banks required me to hire a contractor. I refused and spent a year putting in a 600 ft driveway, put in electic, telephone, and natural gas to an existing barn. Regraded, drainage, installed the septic system and dug the pond. Year two I dug and poured a 2000 square ft walk out basement, roughed in my 2000sq,ft ranch house and tied in the utilities. Year 3 I insulated, wired, plumbed, drywalled and finished most of the inside. The first half of year four I did all tile floors, entry ways, bathrooms, wash room and closets. At the end I contracted out the rest of the fooring and drilling the well. After three and a half years I finished building my house - debt free.
My grandfather built his own home. So much logistics involved. It didn't help he lived two states away from the house he was building. I remember as a boy running around the site non-stop to get everyone something, either tools, nails, or whatever was needed. We slept in campers or trucks for a few weeks. He had help with the trusses (crane) and pouring the footings. After they moved there permanently, he went on to build a 2nd garage for his shop, an apartment above it, and a carport. He re-roofed it with a metal roof later and it's on its second metal roof now. He put in hardwood floor later along with jetted tubs, bathroom heaters, and some other amenities. He was a well-driller by trade but could do anything, carpentry, finish work, plumbing, electrical, etc. I wish we had the technology to video all of that back then like this.
That's a great story! It was definitely more common back then, but even now there are a lot of folks who undertake the challenge, quite a few have reached out!

As a civil engineer, it's fascinating to see how house construction differs between our countries. I noticed that your homes often use load-bearing walls, and your wall footing technique is really neat. In my country, we typically use isolated footings, followed by columns, wall footings, tie beams, and then the slab. Your method seems more cost-efficient, but here, wood is quite expensive, which is why we primarily use concrete for the entire structure. Thank you for inspiring me and giving me ideas for alternative approaches. Your home is truly beautiful, and the way you built it is very inspiring. I hope that one day, my partner and I can have a home of our own. Wishing you all the best!
Appreciate it! It’s the opposite here, masonry products and associated labor are much more expensive. Wood is lower cost, easier to work with, and versatile so it is the default structural material for residential. Pretty much everywhere in the world, the default material is the one which is most plentiful.

This is the first of your videos I have watched, I don't know your background but If I had to guess you must have done some plumbing and HVAC work before, the planning and workmanship was at a very high level, I am impressed with the work and attention to detail. I've built a few houses and garages over my lifetime and the amount of work that goes into even a small reno is way more than you always imagine, working full time and doing the build in the evenings and weekends is hard core. Congratulations on the engagement as well.
Alex here - really appreciate that, and yes even the small tasks require a lot of thought and planning. Tools, materials, order of assembly, etc. I've done a little bit of plumbing on a small bathroom renovation (older video recap is on the channel) but nothing near what I've had to learn for this project. What's not pictured in the timelapse is how long I sit and think through the plan & layout before touching anything, and how much slower I probably am than a real plumber 😂
I am in the process now of building my roads and clearing my lot. Watching you guys (you are so cute) made me want to cry. It is an amazing process and something that I am sure will bring you pride for the rest of your lives. God bless.
Thanks for making this time lapsed of your build. I’ve been with you from the beginning and along the way if either missed or due to my MCI I’ve forgotten some so thank you for sharing!😊
You are an experienced builder. I think that sometimes viewers can do what you do with any or much experience. This is professional quality work..and great to watch.
Its really interesting to see how does looks like building a house not by company but most likely by yourself in US. I mean its build mostly of the wood meanwhile in europe we use bricks or filling lost formwork so its more solid. So it was really informative to see how it looks like in timelapse like this.
This video is such a wonderful lesson about how little video makers need to actually talk while showing how to do something as elegant as building a house! Great job!
Fascinating to see how different you built in America compared to EU. We just built our new house. Our outer wall is brick. then we have a layer of insulation then aerated concrete for the inner walls.
This is quite a common comment for those building in Europe! There's a number of reasons wood is the primary building material in the U.S., but it mostly boils down to earthquakes, availability, versatility, and cost. Essential Craftsman just did a great video addressing this exact topic.
Man, what an awesome journey. I am so happy for you guys. So much blood, sweat, and (plenty of) tears went into this. What an awesome accomplishment. Congratulations!
The sense of accomplishment this must have given you both must be exhilarating not to mention exhausting physically. I would think every second of every day would be worth it in the end. I am jealous. Well done.
Thank you! The journey has been really rewarding. Challenging at times, no doubt but overall we wouldn't change it. There's a great sense of accomplishment working hard and then seeing the final result!
We are a structural and geo-technical engineering firm. Great work here. My only note would be if you are using CMU's, by using all 12" bond beam blocks, you are able to tie in horizontal rebar on 8" centers for the entire wall height (which significantly strengthens the wall against lateral forces, although not needed on very short walls).
Somehow this video came up in my recommendation to watch.. Since i love building and engineering i started watching, then came along the concrete truck pouring the footing.. It says Hanover Concrete, I am like hold up, i live in Hanover as well. So long story short, i throughly enjoyed this and congrats from one Hanoverian to over..
Oh my goodness! I laughed, cried, and smiled the entire time! I'm so proud of you both! This was amazing to watch. The video was so well done, too. I can't wait to see what you do next!
Thank you very much for wearing the propery safety gear and using capping your materials. I see a lot of build videos of people cutting corners on safety and sets a bad example for other prospective self builders. Great job.
i came here to see all the UK builders going mental with the lack of safety harnesses on the roofers. lol. Great job on the build - really good work :-)

In 1986, my wife and I did the same thing... 3.5 acres in what has turned into a very popular area. We built ours in 3 sections as well.. now a total of 5,600 sq ft... 5 bedroom, 5 bath, 3 car garage... used a book by Francis D.K. Ching to guild us along and advise/help from builder friends. Not having a house payment for 30 years will allow you to build some real wealth.
Awesome, thanks for sharing your story! Agreed, we prefer the debt free route even if it takes longer to build and requires much more labor on our part!
My husband and I built our home 7 years ago. (And yes by “built” we did it ourselves!) It was an amazing experience and one our biggest undertakings while working full time jobs and having kiddos. It paid off though! Our market value is crazy. We are getting ready to list and we plan on doing it again (much smaller/modern home this time!)
No, it’s called not buying things that aren’t necessary. Buy things you can only afford.. pretty simple honestly. You don’t need much cash to be debt free. Use your money wisely.
Thanks for sharing your journey. Me and my wife are currently building a house by ourselves and in about a couple of months we will move in. It's been a 3 year journey for us but we are debt free and we have our dream home. We don't live in America so it's been great watching the building process over there.
How nice it is to live in a warm climate! In the the video the water supply is 3 feet deep. In Russia we need to go 7-8 feet deep. And the walls of the house should be thicker. However, in the summer the temperature can be 90-100 Fahrenheit
Congratulations on your project. I would have done the walls with cinder blocks too, but this house was done the proper way so this wood should last for centuries to come. Thanks for sharing with us!
I built a small 1 bedroom house in my garden for my son through Covid lockdowns, it was a no brainer really, he wanted some independence and I was furloughed from work for 3 months. Materials were sometimes harder to get and overall we found prices of materials were 10% higher, but since I was being paid for sitting at home it was an ideal opportunity. I enjoyed the process although my son only ended up living there for 1 year before moving out with his new girlfriend. The house now accommodates all our junk, but I have plans to turn it into a summer house for the wife and the other half a workshop for myself.
This was amazing to watch. The fruits of your labor paid off and then some! It was difficult to tell from the video, but the poly pipe for your well looked like 3/4'' or 1''. Typically, 1 1/4'' or even 1 1/2'' would be ideal to ensure proper flow rate, and with this, whole-house pressure--especially if you are adding onto this build. Hopefully water pressure won't be an issue for you, but if so, you could always add a storage tank to resolve this.
If you liked this timelapse, YEAR 2 is even better: th-cam.com/video/jpVJtWfrBz0/w-d-xo.html
Nothing on earth is more wonderful than having a wife that pulls together with YOU.
AWESOME!

Awesome! We also are not a fan of financing, but to each their own! It does make building much more accessible to many people which is good
This is the first of your videos I have watched, I don't know your background but If I had to guess you must have done some plumbing and HVAC work before, the planning and workmanship was at a very high level, I am impressed with the work and attention to detail.
God bless.
Thanks so much for this thoughtful comment, and best of luck with your project!!
Thanks for making this time lapsed of your build. I’ve been with you from the beginning and along the way if either missed or due to my MCI I’ve forgotten some so thank you for sharing!😊
Thanks for sticking with us Billy, we appreciate the support!
We don't build them to last in the US. Just long enough....
This video is such a wonderful lesson about how little video makers need to actually talk while showing how to do something as elegant as building a house! Great job!
So inspiring guys! The proposal brought a tear to this old mans eye too :) Youve got yourself another subscriber!
Thank you!!
Thank you for the kind words, you’re right 😁 it’s quite the journey but wouldn’t trade it!
I love when couples create their passion to go for ,and go for love.maybe one day I'll share that same energy with someone ❤
Very happy for you two! So smart, good thing you are engineers.
The creative problem solving skills have definitely been strengthened by this project 😂
Well done you two! Enjoy your many years in that lovely home.
Nice work. My wife and I just built a small carriage house too debt free. Owning a house without payments is amazing!
We agree completely!
Awesome. Congrats. I am currently going through the process myself. Building it completely alone is a bit stressful at times though.
It would be much more difficult completely solo, major props!
Awesome video guys! It's a true test of a marriage to do what we've both done. Best of luck with the rest of your project!
Much appreciated! Checked out your channel, you're doing an awesome job. Keep it up
@@MasonDixonAcres Thank you!
Very well built, you two and your helpers constructed things the right way. Great job!
Thanks a ton!
march 21st is my birthday. never saw any of your videos until now . how crazy.
Oh my goodness! I laughed, cried, and smiled the entire time! I'm so proud of you both! This was amazing to watch. The video was so well done, too. I can't wait to see what you do next!
Thank you so much!! Lots more to finish!
Thank you very much for wearing the propery safety gear and using capping your materials. I see a lot of build videos of people cutting corners on safety and sets a bad example for other prospective self builders. Great job.
I recognize love and happiness when I see it. You all rock
Congratulations on building a beautiful garage.
i came here to see all the UK builders going mental with the lack of safety harnesses on the roofers. lol.
Great job on the build - really good work :-)
Желаю вам счастья и испытать ещё больше радостных событий в Новом доме!
My wife and I are in our 60's so I'll build ours single story with the garage on a side entrance and the garage leading into the kitchen in the back.
Great ideas with the ductless AC units.
SO inspiring!!! It's coming along beautifully!!! ✌️🖤🔨
Thanks so much!!
Im not crying. Just kidding. 😢😢😢 soooo sweet! I hope you have the best life ❤❤❤❤
Much appreciated 🙏🏻
What a wonderful pair
You guys are an inspiration. Only tip I can give you is , Don't leave for tomorrow what you can do today. But I think you got that covered. 👍🍷
haha sometimes that's easier said than done! We do take plenty of time to rest, which is why this is a longer build than most 😄
Guys enjoy your lives to get her .find your faith. Christ will never leave you. You are an amazing couple. I just celebrated my 50th wedding anniversary.we are one.I pray that will be you as well.
Hello from Florida!🐊
♥️Congratulations!
That's so Amazing, you truly are Soul Mates!!
Here's to many more years together, and May God Continue to Bless You and Your Family!
♥️✝️🇺🇲👨👩👧👧☮️♥️
Amazing... So happy young couple. 😁 Try to keep this gift.
This is awesome 🎉🎉🎉 You guys are inspiring ❤
Amazing video y’all! I’m in the process of doing the same thing on my newly bought 27 acres here in Louisiana. Keep it up! Y’all’s dedication paid off
Awesome!! Same to you, all it takes is some planning and a little hard work 😉
1 little storm and the whole house is blown away
no quality compared to switzerland
About 40% of new construction in Switzerland is wood framed 😬
March the 21st is my birthday. I will always remember you on this day. And I’m an English builder
That's why hurricanes blows away the whole buildings in USA...
true. Maybe there it’s safe
True that
Don’t think there’s gonna be many hurricanes where he’s at…
That’s a really well built home. It will be fine unless the hurricane drops right on top of it, in which case any home would be in trouble
Debt free? Sure if you have a pile of cash you don't need income from.
Yes because they did have cash?
We got they had a pile of cash cause normal people can’t do this
@@C0D3R33Deveryone's a normal person at some point. Get up.
No, it’s called not buying things that aren’t necessary. Buy things you can only afford.. pretty simple honestly. You don’t need much cash to be debt free. Use your money wisely.
Exactly. Which one had the wealthy parents. Or was one of them a trust fund kid. Either way. Pretty awesome house.
This should be every person's dream. Just knowing how to achieve a dream is one thing, But you are living your dream.
Thanks for sharing your journey. Me and my wife are currently building a house by ourselves and in about a couple of months we will move in. It's been a 3 year journey for us but we are debt free and we have our dream home. We don't live in America so it's been great watching the building process over there.
That's amazing! Definitely the toughest but best thing you will ever do!
Wish you all the best. Looking at your smiling faces made my day :)
haha glad to hear it!
I'm only just now arriving to the "party" ... glad I found you. Loved the timelapse.
Thanks so much!
Прекрасная пара, дай вам Бог здоровья и счастья.
Спасибо за видео, было очень интересно и приятно смотреть.
Congratulations on you guys home and proposal 🎉🎉 I shed a couple of tears for your proposal 😊
Thank you so much!! Full version is on the channel if you want to see it ☺️
Thank you for sharing your personal housing journey, and most importantly your proposal scene!
Thanks for watching 😊
How nice it is to live in a warm climate! In the the video the water supply is 3 feet deep. In Russia we need to go 7-8 feet deep. And the walls of the house should be thicker. However, in the summer the temperature can be 90-100 Fahrenheit
Congratulations on your project. I would have done the walls with cinder blocks too, but this house was done the proper way so this wood should last for centuries to come. Thanks for sharing with us!
max 100 years these kind of houses
@@sheet3209 it really depends on how people treat it. If people wait until leaks arise to fix roof issues, then the wood will rotten in a few decades.
Exactly. no water = no problems
А вообще вы двойные молодцы. Сначала заработали на дом, а потом его построили. Красавчики!
i love these 1 year timelapses
I built a small 1 bedroom house in my garden for my son through Covid lockdowns, it was a no brainer really, he wanted some independence and I was furloughed from work for 3 months.
Materials were sometimes harder to get and overall we found prices of materials were 10% higher, but since I was being paid for sitting at home it was an ideal opportunity. I enjoyed the process although my son only ended up living there for 1 year before moving out with his new girlfriend.
The house now accommodates all our junk, but I have plans to turn it into a summer house for the wife and the other half a workshop for myself.
Awesome, way to use your lockdown time for some good use!
Thanks a lot! It is 1" to a well pressure tank, it flows more than enough for sure! Appreciate the tips
Молодці, супер!
Для повного щастя ще треба сонячні панелі 🎉
🇺🇦
Very well done, congrats in all the work and hart that the two of you put it in this proyect. This will unite you for ever.❤❤❤
Thanks so much!! Agreed ❤️
