    Wow, great video! I am putting in a new screen now and want to implement something like this. My only major difference is I need the masking to be acoustically transparent, while still being light absorbing, so I can't use that same material.

    Extremely clever. With my setup, I am looking to use in-wall Klipsch speakers behind a 180" 2.39:1 screen. If I did this... I wonder if I could use acoustic transparent black mesh so the sound would still come though. Hopefully there's a sweet spot where the wooden rails wouldn't be in front of the L/R speakers.

    That looks great! Right not it's not the highest priority because my theater is still a long way from being operational but ultimately I do want to put in a masking system. My screen is 2.4:1, 185" and it would be nice to have the ability to mask all the way down to 4:3 since that should be the absolute minimum that would ever be needed.
    I'm not sure I want to do the rigid panel approach, I'm thinking along the lines of a single vertical bar that drags along a fabric curtain behind it. The speakers are behind the screen so I wouldn't want the frame of the panels obstructing them. I already have a little obstruction because the array main speakers are quite a bit taller than the height of the screen so the screen frame does obstruct just a bit but only closer to the ends where the arrays are shaded anyway.
    Great job on your system, thanks for posting all the details!

    • @Mixturerich
      @Mixturerich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not using a lens. Using the projector zoom/mask even if that means pixel loss. A lens is expensive and fiddly. If money is no object, get a high-end anamorphic lens. But honestly, my image is amazing so the increased resolution would be fairly negligible.

It's a great system and I can make the room 100% dark even in the sunniest conditions during the day. If it weren't for a small LED on my wall switch, I would not even be able to navigate the room in the dark. An upcoming project will be to automate (motorize) those shades.

    Did you make your valance so that it would cover the top frame of your screen or is it higher/above the top frame? (or maybe half of the top frame?)

    How differently would you have to make this if you wanted to also be capable of 4:3 masking? Would you just need wider wooden rectangles and more space on the sides of the screen?

    • @Mixturerich
      @Mixturerich  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s exactly right! Alternatively, there are 90 degree angles available for the Zemismart curtain tracks, it would be feasible to have the panels turn the corners too. As long as their were only two connection points at the top of the panels instead of the 4 that I did. This project can be adapted in many different ways.

  • @MrKurtBergeron
    @MrKurtBergeron 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Very cool. For more polish you could set up an Alexa routine with a custom phrase as trigger and then have your curtains go to the desired percentage. For example, you enter a trigger of WHEN/ADD AN EVENT+/VOICE: "Set masking to sixteen by nine"
    ALEXA WILL/ADD AN ACTION+/CUSTOM "Set Mask to 64%"

      @@Mixturerich Sorry, I should have been more clear. How come you didn't just use curtains (fabric) is what I meant. My thinking is wouldn't it be lighter in weight and less wear and tear on the motorized track system.

    • @Mixturerich
      @Mixturerich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for clarifying :-). That is definitely something I considered. So reasoning for panels rather than curtains was the crispness of the vertical edge. I wanted this to truly mask the image and be as close to the screen as possible. A curtain cannot achieve that. As for weight and wear, great question. Believe it or not, these panels (being skeleton with fabric wrapped over) are lighter than the total weight of 15 feet of pleated velvet curtains. The motor does not struggle at all and the nylon rollers are moving through solid aluminium channel. Friction is low no chance of breaking the rails by the weight either.

    • @Mixturerich
      @Mixturerich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you mean what size curtain track? That will depend on the width of your room, leaving enough distance for your masking panels to retract off the screen. For example, my 150 inch screen is approximate 12 feet wide. I have a 15’3” foot wide room. It was just enough width for me to accommodate my masking panels so I ordered the curtain kit that is just wider than that and cut the track to fit 15’3”. Hope this helps!

    One huge problem with 2.35 aspect ratio is that you can't watch imax content because of the constant aspect ratio changes through the whole movie. And there are a couple of standout movies that use this back and forth aspect ratio. Not only the projector can't deal with back and forth lens memory on the fly by itself in anticipation of the format changes but this type of masking would not work for that purpose.
    But this is extremely awesome and reminds me of how the theaters I used to attend had the curtains do this exact thing! Extremely awesome!!

Keep up the awesome work sir! 😎👍👏

    • @MrMahn21
      @MrMahn21 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best way to deal with these instances is to just crop them to scope. This was how they were exhibited in standard theaters, and IMAX really requires a ridiculous viewing angle to make sense. It's otherwise just superfluous picture information that can be safely discarded. Shifting ratio films were framed with this in mind, so cropping is totally OK.
