Have to say I absolutely love my FN2 GT. Owned since it was 16 months old and don't intend to sell it. Totally trustworthy, brilliant engine, love the seats and the red graphic dash.
About 7 years ago I worked at a used car dealership. We had a Type R in for about 8 grand and one of these for an extra 10 grand. Didn't realise how special they are until watching this. Thanks
Loved my FN2 - had it for 7 years and did 170,000kms in it. Cracking car. Driving a GR Yaris now and it reminds me what I loved about small 2 door hatches
Got an FN2 18 months ago after my i30 N was written off and I still have the FN2. I was only going to keep it for a few months until I found a new car but man these are so fun to drive, reliable and cheap
Your original video on the FN2 is part of why I have one. Everyone gets thier panties in a bunch over not having double wishbones, but frankly, unless you're a driver in the grade of Tom Kristiansen or George Russell (which 99% are not, no matter how good you are on Forza 4, you're just not) you wouldn't even notice if one were substituted for the other. The FN2 might be more "grown up", but that just means it has things that make it an excellent long distance cruiser. The option of Xenon Headlights, Cruise Control and dual zone climate control mean that this thing is as competent at the commute to work as it is the furiously driven track day. I've put 21,000 miles on mine in the year i've owned it. Not a single thing has gone wrong. I've serviced it, I've cleaned it, I've driven it. This Mugen Edition is lovely, and I'm sad more weren't sold. What a cracking car!
earlier this year i bought a modded fn2 with the full mugen wing an body kit miltek stainless exhaust ecotec engine remap to 240bhp and the car is amazing im loving it you cant beat the old school feel and vtec rush !!
Most definitely just about everything I'd want in a hot hatch or a Honda! A great story of the family who owns it and I appreciate the little details in the review like showing off the handbook.
Owned a FN2 for 3 years, loved it! Recently upgraded to a FK8 6 months ago (amazing car).. but some days I still miss my FN2. Although, the hard/stiff ride quality of the FN2 is probably the only thing I don't miss about it.
Likewise, I loved my fn2 and spent so much on it (spoiler, big brak kit, milltek exhaust, led, clutch, alloys) and despite my fk8 being the best car I've owned..I wish I'd kept my fn2
I've not owned either, but I've test driven both an FN2 and FK8. The FK8 lost out to a 981 Cayman S...by a mile if I'm honest, I found the FK8 outright disappointing, but I still smile whenever I see an FN2. In some ways it is just a worse EP3, but it's also the last, most modern Honda with a proper VTEC engine. Also looks tasty, those triangular exhaust tips still do it for me, as does the stepped dash design. The FN2 is one of only 2 cars I've never owned that I could have and regret not buying- the other being a Peugeot 306 GTi-6, my favourite car of all time. That and the FN2 for me perfectly represent fun > fast.
@@Trumppower Their current used values are almost identical, around £30k. Running costs are also similar. For anyone without kids, comparing the 981CS and FK8 is a very reasonable thing to do. If the extra seats aren't an issue, the FK8 is a clear loser. It's not bad, it's just a lot less good. Incidentally, I'm now looking for a fun manual hot hatch. This year I've driven the Focus ST, Leon Cupra 300, 308 GTi, Megane RS, i30N and FK8. Also an S4 and 540i xDrive because I could. The 308 and i30N are much more fun than the FK8 on public roads. Not faster, but all of those are much faster than anyone needs so that's totally irrelevant. As I said, the FK8 isn't bad, but it's not as great as people seem to think- they're now all about lap times, they've lost the fun of old Type Rs.
I borrowed a mates FN2 Type R for a week and it had a bone splitting ride however the K20 engine is just such a special thing. Truly intoxicating addictive fun.
The 18" wheels are bad, the 19" wheels are worse! That the car originally came on Potenza RE050 tyres, which are very, very rigid tyre, didn't help matters. Yet, even so the Japanese market Civic Type R FD2 is even stiffer and therefore the FN2 is supposedly too soft and soggy in the handling compared to that, it's like Honda can't win!
Love my FN2. Hard to go past how good they are especially when factoring the cost of them now. To anyone considering buying one all I have to say is have a go at one. Not saying they are for everyone, but they are a big step up from a 172/182 Clio and a well rounded hot hatch. The best thing about the FN2 is everyone loves it. Especially women. And I don’t mean you will find a lady friend because of one, but as a car guy, it makes it much easier when the women in your life enjoy being in the car. Top Gear are also totally wrong with their review of it.
yes the interior is the main thing about the FN cars that everyone loves, it's just a nice place to be...the same can not be said for the EP cars! FN civics with a multilink rear would've been almost perfect
@@johnmitchell2269 Although it was an FN2 (the red one that featured in the video) that EVO declared as the fastest fwd car they had tested round Bedford Autodrome. In fact, the only reason the 2.2 Mugen version was ever built was because not long after that, EVO went along with a Clio with the boost turned up and took that record away, so we had to build a faster one!
@@johnmitchell2269 The EP3 (mine was the substantially similar DC5 Integra Type R) might handle 'better' in the sense of having a more oversteer chassis balance but it definitely doesn't handle 'better' in the sense of being more predictable and providing more confidence. The flawed suspension geometry sees to that. The FN2 is definitely more predictable IMO, whereas the DC5 is constantly subject to bump steer and torque steer with that wonky steering rack where the arms come out of the middle of the rack. I tried the SHG Delrin steering rack slider and it still wasn't great. 🤨 Yes, the EP3 & DC5 still have IRS which is good, but it's not great IRS... It's a significantly worse design than on the older EK9 & DC2 as the IRS was redesigned to be more compact. MotoIQ have a great video explaining why the suspension geometry is so flawed on the EP3 & DC5: th-cam.com/video/3s1MuqCfPXQ/w-d-xo.html
@@TassieLorenzo I was meaning in terms of cornering speed. You can drive an EP3 a lot harder and much more aggressively than you can an FN2. FN2's were not designed to be pushed hard hense the McPherson front suspension and the torsion beam rear suspension plus extra weight.
As an FN2 owner for 3 years, the only true dynamic flaw is the too soft rear beam, and that makes the car understeer. Putting stiffer rear spring or rear sway bar can change the car completely. But out of the box, Renaults and fiesta st are just more fun.
That's very true! A shame that Honda didn't follow the lead of Renault Sport or Ford in setting a mid-corner overseer balance from the factory. "Putting stiffer rear spring or rear sway bar can change the car completely." I just put wider wheels on the front and set higher rear tyre pressures and that seems quite a bit better without doing any actual modifications. 🙂
Also I think it's literal common sense that the limited edition, special, rare version of a car always receives a huge markup when it becomes second hand. It always seems insane to me when people can't justify a few thousand more for a v spec or a mugen, tommi makinen, etc when it'll make complete sense when you sell it. Buying this car new was the smart and obvious choice
People fail to see the big picture and forget about depreciation; which is often the biggest cost. My little collection includes an old Defender (bought 4 years ago) and Focus RS mk3 (bought nearly new). Other than expensive servicing and the cost of interest on the loans, I won’t have lost a penny on them. Looking at getting an Up! GTI runaround too, which I doubt I’ll lose much on either.
I mean, that's not entirely the case when you take inflation into account. £40k in 2010 was the equivalent of £57k today, so it still hasn't really broken even yet. Also, an extreme example of this would be something like a vauxhall VX490 . They sold for about £4.5k when new, and usable examples sell for about £5k now. Does that mean he's made £500 profit? No! you've also got to factor in the much higher running costs of owning these bespoke cars too. (insurance, spare parts etc)
@@ihavenousername1805 but compared to buying a standard car new, where those lost more than half of their value, and even more because of inflation, they seem like no brainers Also, breaking even is already a huge profit IMO considering you've used the car
@@ihavenousername1805 He said it was £38,599 new and Honda gave you a £1k contribution. £37,599 in 2010 according to the Bank of England, would be £47k in 2021. So on the one that sold for £45k, for 12 years use, it would have cost you £2k in depreciation in real terms - for a car that never had a cult following like the old ones.
@@kdpwt But a standard car was literally half the price so it much more accessible to 95% of prospective buyers. Dumping a shit ton of money into something that'll barely break even after 10-15 years isn't a very good investment. If you've got money to burn on expensive cars, and you're still worried about the value, then you may as well just get something that's already ballooned in price(focus RS, porsche Gt3 etc) , and 95% of the time you'll get your money back, and usually a few grand more. Much faster and less riskier than gambling on wether something will become desirable in 15 years time or not. And breaking even isn't a "huge profit" if you've had a load of your money tied up in one asset for 10 years. That money could have been making you much more money during that timeframe.
I've got to say Jay, amazing video and I'm so glad someone with Honda background has done a video on the M20 Type R. I've owned an FN2 for a year, but boy in that year of ownership I've turned that stock FN2 GT into a mental car compared to some other older hot hatches of its era. After learning how to drive that car hard, I started going the modified route, found out how to unlock the true potential of the mighty N/A K20. Originally started off with a Milltek exhaust, just to add more sound to it and damn did it sound good when it changed cam profiles! Then I added a K&N panel filter just for some extra induction noise, didn't disappoint either. Shortly after that I had gotten myself a Tegiwa exhaust manifold, getting rid of that disgusting "cast iron" manifold, the breathing aspect was nearly finished, decided to go for the infamous HKS induction kit which many on the groups will know is also called a "hot air intake" since it sucks air from within the engine bay, but the sound you got from it when on VTEC was immense, unlike anything else I've ever experienced. Made the trip to Paul West (TPW Engineering) who mapped my car on a dyno with EcuTek software (4 switchable maps were available), top end the car had gained 30bhp at the flywheel which if you're used to turbo tuning, is nothing. However the power I had gained in the Mid-Range of the engine is even more than the power of the M20 in the Mid-Range having compared my graph to the Mugen one shown in the video. Some cars that I had matched in my 230bhp FN2 on straights and corners were surprised if not shocked. It put a smile on my face every single time I drove it, added some lightweight Rota wheels to it, the unsprung mass helped out in the end as well as polybushing the whole suspension gave you even more feel through the steering and gave the car a sophisticated stiffness without having to lower or modify the suspension. Paired with sticky tyres such as the Michelin PS4, I had grip for days, unfortunately this was an 08 model which did not have an LSD like the last 6 months of production of the FN2 did and CW/M200/M20. All in all, I still miss that car, that naturally aspirated scream. Now I drive an FK2 Type R which I absolutely love to bits, however even though it offers so much more in corners, it does feel like what the FN2 should've been like. Great review by yourself, hope to see more Honda content in the future.
Great vid as always! The full blown Mugen version looks the bees-knees with the wing and those GP alloys! Absolutely loved my Championship White FN2, I had number 001 - with reg plate HUY. It can be seen in many promotional videos and was even driven by, and photographed with Jenson Button during a promotional event on its release, which can be found online. It was a fantastic car, and was such a pleasure to drive, you could really enjoy a good blast without actually going ballistic. It was stiff as hell, and it had plenty of weird quirks, mainly the seat returning to it's stock position after letting rear passengers in each time. They were soon redirected to the passenger side only! It soon became more of a pain than a joy due to my commuting and the fact that my Mrs absolutely hated driving it due to it's visibility and heavy clutch - so I sold it on to a lovely chap with a Japanese tuning company. Safe to say - he's done it justice! I traded up for a five door manual 125d M Sport which is actually, a brilliant car, and a decision I'm glad I made, because it is everything I currently need and plenty fast enough to get my kicks - but the engine, colour and special feeling the FN2 gave me is something I'll always cherish!
it's funny that I use to watch that guy how is tuning Type R-s, and in the other day I saw some updates about his car..and now I find out that it is your former car. Honda world of us, piston heads, it's actually very small. Cheers from Romania! th-cam.com/video/nHAwQmRV7VU/w-d-xo.html
The argument between FN or EP is daft, okay we have a JDM EP3 and a 230hp FN2 in the household, they both sing in VTEC! I love both, but my FN2 surprises alot of people, and I'm very close to 240hp+ once I get the cams and injectors. Sure nowadays the Turbo boys are out in force, but for sheer fun, I'll never part with my FN2 (or the JDM EP!)
That thing gets through the gears so so much quicker than my old stock FN2. I’m guessing about £10k in mods will get you close to this thing. Engine, suspension, wheels - quickly adds up!
You are right about comparing the c20xe to the k20. I had a nova with the engine swap and digi dash from the astra gte. When i get in my s2000, although an f20c, im always taken back to the feel of the vauxhall even though the cars couldnt be more different. K20 and c20xe are some of the best 4 cyl engines of all time.
We don't have those here, we got the FD2 instead, which has the independent rear and the Mugen RR version of that should be even better to drive than this, if less rare since there's 300 of those.
As I recall that was part of why Top Gear were so mad - Honda had the audacity to use the Jazz chassis for Europe and claim it was "to improve boot space" - of course that was clearly utter bullshit, it was to reduce costs. Doesn't make it a bad car though, just a sign of the start of the sad decline of Honda to the pathetic shell of a company they are now.
Had a 57 plate FN2 in Milano Red about 10 years ago. Only kept it a year as my daily drive increased and it was costing a fortune in fuel. They get some slack as they get compared negatively to the EP3. I loved mine though and would buy another as a project if I had the space.
I would love to drive this (wring it’s neck) I love cars with feel & connection. I can just tell that all that is going on right there. Torque steer… it’s just part of the fun when you’re expecting it, makes you smile when it happens when you predict it to. Great work as usual J
I got myself a Championship White Edition 😍. Not exaggerating at all, but this car is the most beautiful Type R ever and it’s also the NA Type R with the most potential to exploit. This Mugen version just proves how good the car really is 🔥🔥
As someone who is neutral when it comes to fast Hondas and has driven/owned some moderately silly cars (currently in a 981CS), the FN2 is one of the very few cars that I could have owned but didn't, yet still look longingly at. If I had a 2nd parking space, it'd be top 5 to fill it. I totally agree about the most beautiful Type R ever.
Great video as always Jay. I did a little digging and found that the Barum Tyres it has on are made by Continental if anyone is interested. I truly wish I could import one of these Civics into the States.
This is probably the best hot hatch ever built! I have a championship white fn2 and I absolutely love the thing I will never sell it.. yes I know there not the fastest cars on the planet but that's not what these are all about.
OK... So I'm a petrol-head of a certain generation. I'm blessed to be a family man - amazing wife, two wonderful grown-up children, even a dog..! So as much as I fantasize, I won't be getting a Type R any time soon (boooo..!!!) BUT we do have a facelift 2011 1.8 si ivtec which I love. It's a used-buy, had-a-hard-life five-door family run around, but I believe it's got something of the Mugen / Type R in it's DNA. Definitely a drivers car - precise steering, slick gear-change, good linear power delivery, trustworthy braking etc. (and harsh ride over potholes..!) It's a pale reflection undoubtably, but a reflection nonetheless (hurray..!!) All credit to Honda. Great review as ever JayEmm, many thanks.
The FN1 is underated. 17" wheels ride and slightly softer sprung than a Type R but still handles beautifully plus very practical storage. The R18 might not produce anywhere near as much top end as the larger K20 but actually produces significantly more useable torque from 2-4k rpm which makes it nicer to drive round town.
@@gazman9468 yes it's a shame that R18 is SOHC. Still as a fast non hot hatch one of a better choices if you don't want to spend a lot on road tax ex. A3 3.2 FSI
Lately, It cracks me up of how people say "Mugen", after I saw a video with title "How do you say Mugen? I'll Bet you are saying it wrong!" ;-) I for one, getting my first FN2 'GT Plus Race' version, hopefully by the end of this week. Again, saving up for many years, to look around for a Championship or a legit Mugen one. But yes, what a great Nr "3", this one is. I hope that it stays in that family forever! Enjoy it, take care of it and you love it. Thank you for the review of this car.
This reminds me of my 2005 S2000 which was a great, great car. I miss him. I even drove it in the winter as I had 4 winter tires/rim rims for him. Cheerio Jay.
Shows what you know. Barum tyres are mega. Pretty sure Porsche spec them as the OE tyre on the new GT4RS as part of the optional 'shit pack'. Get yourself a set and feel disconnected from the road
Brilliant review, James. It is unique, dare I say “quirky” cars like this, with just that little bit of brilliance, make petrol heads like me really appreciate how special the motoring world really is.
My fn2 is mine outright and when I upgrade I'll be keeping the fn2. I'll be making it two seater and doing it up nicely so it drives even better and looks showroom quality. The smiles you get on the stock fn2 are well worth the relatively cheap price.
I had an FN2 GT back in 2007 when they came out (had an EP3 before that) and I did rather like it. Wasn't as much of a rollerskate as the EP3 but it wasn't a bad car and didn't deserve the bad rap it got. Not tried the Mugen though. I now own (have done for the last 13 years) an Accord Type R (CH1 1999) which I have to say is a lot of fun to push in the twisties :)
Is the accord quicker? I’ve always liked since s friends dad at school had one and took us out in it. But presumed it would be a fair bit slower than an FN2
@@GTFour They're quite similar in power, but it often comes down to the driver which is quickest. The ATR is harder to keep in VTEC but rewards you more for it. Ive had many cars like A45 amg, Mk6 gti, brz, mx5 is350 lexus and 328i , for the money Fn2 was the best cars out of all !!!! Yes stock they're little "uncooked" but once you do some suspension work, breathing mods plus some weight reduction it becomes hell of a car. Not to mention none the cars that listed could take a beating like the civic.
I have a Fn2 Race Edition (lighter version, 1200kg, only avalible for some countrys) and the car it's amazing, 200bhp it's more than enought people just want allways more 🤷🏻♂️
I really really loved the look of these when they came out. It was very dramatic and looked like it drove the way the mugen rr actually did lol. I think the mugen rr is probably the best type r/mugen ever made, or the advanced concept if that counts (Idk if it does. Also, check it out if you haven't heard of it James, I think it's quite nice). To me though, the Type R's finest hour will always be the Ek9, not for how fast it is, but the timeless style and soul. Especially if it's one tuned by Spoon That Walker family sounds pretty badass lol
People keep banging on about this torsion beam suspension. It just needs setting up with proper alignment and tracking and it's wicked. Renault models have the same suspension set up and there wicked on track.
Imported FD2 for sale in a dealer near me..... for €25,000! It's been up for months and they've dropped the price twice. I'm still doing the man maths for it and I hope it won't go befroe I finish my calculations!
@@astuteventures no it didn’t. They were meant to put it in the last 4 of the Mugens but they never sold them so they didn’t. It stayed as a prototype.

The FN2 is one of only 2 cars I've never owned that I could have and regret not buying- the other being a Peugeot 306 GTi-6, my favourite car of all time. That and the FN2 for me perfectly represent fun > fast.
@@ApothecaryTerry lol civic lost to a car which costs twice the price? 😎
Likewise, fk8 is an absolute machine but wish I'd also kept my fn2 which was amazing.
Top Gear were correct about the EP3's being quicker and better handling though.
🤨
Yes, the EP3 & DC5 still have IRS which is good, but it's not great IRS...
renaults have rear beam suspension 2 my mates got one !!!
Love my FN2 such an underrated car and the Mugen is just on another level, another great video jay!
Always loved this generation of Civic.
Awesome car. Another car that I wish we had in the U.S. The only Mugen version we had was a Mugen Civic Si sedan. I think around 2008.
K20 legendary engine. Especially the mugen or the 220bhp jdm k20a. Masterpieces
I really miss the throttle response on my old CRX. Please review one if you get a chance. Great work 👍
My brother had an FN2 Mugen 200 about ten years ago, he loved it.
Amazing N/A sound and throttle response
@@ihavenousername1805 but compared to buying a standard car new, where those lost more than half of their value, and even more because of inflation, they seem like no brainers
Also, breaking even is already a huge profit IMO considering you've used the car
@@kdpwt
But a standard car was literally half the price so it much more accessible to 95% of prospective buyers.
Even as understeered as it is, I love my regular Civic of this generation.
Will, from now on, call it my VTEC Van.
Great video - and great telepathy, I was looking at FN2s last night so this is primely timed helpful advice!! Keep up the great work
The exhaust sound like a kazoo to me 🤣 Nice and fun little car. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Cheers from Romania!

well, I also know that the yt algorithm works quite well.. 😅
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos, everything about them is pure quality, thanks.
Extremely kind words Paul
I had an EP3. 15 years later, I still think about that VTech rush. The induction noise was something else.
We don't have those here, we got the FD2 instead, which has the independent rear and the Mugen RR version of that should be even better to drive than this, if less rare since there's 300 of those.
here in the UK whenever a Type-R owner sees an fd2 on the road we stare at it like it's Margot Robbie

Holy what?
All that tech. All that performance. All those upgrades.
And you fit a set of Winky Wanky tyres on it.
Shame we never got these stateside. Even so, my 08 si is still a blast to drive even with the 197hp k20.
Fn2 is a great type r, it never got the love it deserved.
@@ApothecaryTerry respect your opinion, thanks 👍
Great video as always Jay. I did a little digging and found that the Barum Tyres it has on are made by Continental if anyone is interested. I truly wish I could import one of these Civics into the States.

love these things, I hope one day you get to drive the JDM FD2, i've only heard great, great things about them
I would love to see your review on the Honda Civic FD2 Type R
I'd love to try an FD2 too!
I've got regular 1.8 FN1 Civic and regarding to storage space I must confirm, it's enormous!
A3 3.2 FSI
