As a teen, I hunted rabbits with beagles. I later bird hunted. Over 20 years through 1990, when quail in SouthCarolina disappeared. I gave my last pointer to a plantation (quail hunting). I could not imagine a dog so devoted not being able to hunt and find game.
One of the saddest days of my life. I miss the energy and boundless enthusiasm. Great dogs, They deserve a great handler.

Even though Kalsey Salena Barnhill is a first time dog owner she manages to take some on her breaks for her English pointer Duchess Lizette . By doing endless training sessions, like the treat on 👃, jumping through fake firey hoops in her tiger custom. She most had cats through her lifetime. As child had pigs, 7 donkeys, and 🐍 s . They would have lots of fun together. Her former college roommate had 5 german pinschers and 4 English pointers. ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊

I adopted a 2yr old show English Pointer that was no longer wanted. I don't hunt, however I do like hiking, the outdoors and spending time at the beach. This is the best dog I have ever had. She is sensitive, intelligent, gentle, loyal and an all around great pet. She was also very healthy all her life. She is nearing the end of her life now, aged 15, and I am deeply saddened to part with what I know will be the best dog I have ever owned. And I've had some great ones, incl .my super sweet, super smart standard poodle. But this pointer lady is simply the best.

English Pointers are one of our favorite breeds. We also have Vizslas, and two 1/2 and 1/2 from an accidental litter. We kept one of the puppies, but had to take the other one back due to issues with the home he went to. Pointers are big love bugs, and it makes me sad to see them kept in kennels, as many hunters do. As for grooming, the Pointer hair is notorious for weaving into any thing they touch. Two of my pointers like to go behind the front seat of the car and I finally put a towel up, when the back of the seat looked white, not black 🙂. Vizsla hair is not bad compared, but I would never pick one over the other, love them both.....

My English Pointer, “Ranger,” lived 14 years. He had Addison’s disease, so apparently it’s a blessing he lived so long. He was the sweetest dog ever, always a big baby at heart. He was also simply beautiful; classic, natural stance (had curved tail) with any bird of interest. (Picture him at the vets where there was a big parrot cage) I live in Florida. Once an outdoor bird flew in my open front door. Ranger did not go on point, he gently plucked that bird from the air. Talk about old school! The only problem that dog had was me. I was outclassed.

My son has a purebred English Pointer, his first dog (we had cats when he was growing up). He did not train him, assuming the boy would be naturally well-behaved. We couldn't ask for a sweeter, gentler, more beautiful and adorable dog but the lack of training is a big no-no with this high energy breed! They're a large breed, all muscle and bone. Make sure you train them so their naturally occurring sense of order and self-control is maximized.

Here in Norway at least any respectable breeder will tick both boxes, to maintain the integrity of the breed. It's frowned upon selling a Pointer to someone who doesn't hunt, by the same people who take them to shows.

I thought that it was the accepted origin that the English pointer was a descendent of the português pointer as they are the only two pointing breeds that’s share the iconic square head and body shape. I read that português pointers were imported into England and crossed with the fox hound to make a wider running and overall larger hunting dog.
