    I used to practice this with my dog since she was little, i would go out of the house and come back in 4 min acting normal kinda ignoring the dog. I would do this frequently. Eventually she did not even care when i left the house, she was just kinda chilling.

    The explosion of excitement upon walking through the door contributes to separation anxiety. Beautiful dog beautiful home and neighborhood.

    • @robertbroadbent2522
      @robertbroadbent2522 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Also just contributes to her being a GSP. My 7 year old GSP still acts like that when I walk in, and he just sleeps while I’m gone. In fact, the day he doesn’t do that Ill know something is wrong haha.

    • @h2oburke
      @h2oburke ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@robertbroadbent2522 This comment alone is an indicator that you have the propensity to reinforce bad behavior (anxiety) into a blind negative feedback loop.
      On a personal level I’de rather not have my dog sad or worried while I am gone, nor am I selfish enough to feed into this behavior so that “I” am greeted with a dog that’s happy to see me for self satisfaction.

    Tundra did good for being alone. She whined a little but not bad. My female has severe separation anxiety. Even for short durations. She has her brother and sister with her, so she's not by herself. She has gotten a little better now that she's a year old, but still gets anxious. I only work part time, so she isn't alone very long. I wish we had a dog park here. That would be so nice. 💜🐾🐾

    • @tundrathegsp
      @tundrathegsp  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hopefully she will get better as we keep letting her stay home alone more often. That is so nice that your dogs have siblings to be with. They have each other for comfort when you guys aren’t home. Dog parks are cool here but to be honest owners over here aren’t so cool.

    Whenever I'd leave my dog alone at home I'd leave a radio on for her with a radio station that played classical music and it does definitely help to calm her while somewhat keeping her company via calming / relaxing music ! Sure beats hearing nothing but complete silence!

      That's a good idea. Beautiful interactive music vs silence. Even a cat can figure that one out, says a dog.

  • @steinimar75
    @steinimar75 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    She’s a beautiful dog and a brilliant name. She did well for her first home alone session.
    A few tips:
    - Crate train her, such that she associates good things happening in the crate. Like food rewards and knowing she is safe there, will make this easier for her.
    - Go easy on the excitement when you walk in the door. It might lead to more seperation anxiety. It’s better to be calm, ignore (as far as you can) for about 1-2min, then praise and give food rewards in the (open) crate. Will associate good things happening in the crate.
    - Finally if you can hear the toenails on hard surface floors, then they need to be trimmed.
    Good luck and enjoy the awesome dog park

    • @tundrathegsp
      @tundrathegsp  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you for the useful tips. Quick question about the crate…are you saying to put her in there when we leave? Because she is in her crate only for her afternoon naps (1-2 hours). Other than that she is pretty much free in the home.

    • @steinimar75
      @steinimar75 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, I would try to associate the crate to be her favorite safe place to be when resting/taking naps erc…
      Start off easy:
      - She goes in the crate, close the door, count to 10, open the door, praise/reward/whatever she associates as being enjoyable.
      - Same, stand up, wait 30 sec…
      - Same, stand up take a step back, open crate…
      - Leave the room, return after 10 sec…
      - Return after 1min…
      Gradually introduce/associate:
      - She goes into crate
      - You leave
      - You ALWAYS come back
      - Good things happen

    • @steinimar75
      @steinimar75 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also, try to associate the command “Crate” with her going into her crate, laying down and being calm.
      Start with:
      - She goes in, is calm, say “Crate” reward
      - Do that several times
      - Then say “crate” when she is going into it
      - Finally if the word association is successful, you should be able to give her the command “Crate” and she will know exactly what to do

      @@tundrathegsp just as an example of how this can be- we crate-trained my current dog from the time she was a puppy. Her crate was her space to sleep, etc. We would give her a treat and some love in her crate every night and had her sleep in her crate downstairs until she was housetrained. We then moved her bed crate up to our bedroom, but kept her crate in the kitchen for years afterward. Every time we would leave we would give her a treat in the crate, but as she got better in the house we would leave the crate open.
      She's 15 this year, and even though she hasn't had a crate in that kitchen spot forever, she STILL goes to that spot whenever we leave the house. She also goes into her crate any time she is scared, like during storms, etc. It's her space, and she knows it.

    It's more stressful for us, I think! I started leaving my lab home alone in a crate when she was about 3 months for 15 minutes and gradually increased the time. After she got to about 6 months, I was able to leave her at home out of the crate for small increments and gradually increased to about 4-6 hours. Something that I think helps now is giving her a stuffed kong when I leave, so now she doesn't mind at all!

I leave the tv on to a station that won’t shut off when done and when I get back, I don’t scream hello and get her all excited…I act normal and wait a few minutes, then praise her, pet her, and tell her what a good girl she is, AND give her a treat! They are velcro dogs. My 12 year old has separation anxiety from me. If I leave a room for a minute, he cries if he can't follow me. He is very vocal. After his 1st chemo treatment, his oncologist gave me Trazadone to give him 2 hours before I drop him off so he doesn't wail before and after when I have to leave him. This is something to want to try to prevent, obviously. It's not fun for them. He's always worked with me, so we aren't apart much, and now he's very old to try to correct it.

    We are a multi dog family, we hate leaving our dogs home alone but sometimes it is necessary. We make sure that when we leave there is a lot of fun filled fanfare for our dogs, extra hugs, kisses and treats when we leave. That makes leaving a positive experience for them. When we come home, we are more subdued but of course we miss them horribly. We do not want our dogs waiting at the door for us knowing all the fanfare would come later, we make sure we have all the fun and all the fanfare before we leave so they can just relax and take a nap until we get home. I can tell you really love Tundra. ❤

    Can you pay a dog walker or even a dog sitter to see her for half hour/ an hour halfway thru the day just to break it up for her?
    If it’s a full day on her own but only ever once in a blue moon then that’s just one of those things in life, however if she has to contend with this regularly, if she needs to start expecting this now as part of her routine then that’s something you need to take care of now you know her feelings on being left alone. She experiences stress straight away and I’m just hoping for her sake that your scheduled return is never delayed so that she can rely on you guys to show up and build confidence that this WILL happen and any loneliness or anxiety is only ever temporary.
    Routine and boundaries mean safety and security to dogs too and if you could try to plan your return to be at a set hour of the day each time then she’ll get used to knowing when to expect you. Having said that, having some form of music (or TV or radio or news-station) to provide aural stimulation can help some dogs.
    But even better is a dog walking service or even a dog sitter who will just spend time with your pet for a small fee - and preferably someone she already knows.
    It breaks up the day and provides human contact although don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can achieve a similar result by phoning and then enabling/ allowing her to hear your voice thru loudspeaker.
    It’ll only confuse and frustrate because she’ll be able to hear you but not see you and then cannot find you. It will not calm her and likely will have the opposite effect.
    But by far the best option is to limit any long periods on her own to as few as possible.
    I appreciate I’m commenting on your personal circumstances without taking the time to find out all the facts. I’m assuming things based on one video.
    I accept all that and apologies if I’ve misunderstood but as pets are at their owners’ mercy and often have stressful situations presented where only their trust in their owner and the confidence they’ve built up with their owner can support them.
    CLEARLY you adore your little girl amd she’s also still very young and that much more resilient, but as I said pets are almost always completely at their owners mercy.
    She has no siblings to keep her company - that’s down to you (as in that’s a choice you made when you got just her as your dog); when she’s subjected to being by herself for long periods of time and being split from the rest of her “pack” - that’s down to you; the conditions she must endure - that’s down to you….
    It’s true that I have such strong feelings on the matter but dogs can’t speak up for themselves and I hope I’ve been constructive rather than just sounding like I’m nagging.
    She’s adorable and I wish you the best of luck

      When your ready, just look around and a dog that you need will come into your view. Bring it home, into your life and heart. Until then, grieve all you need to. Don't listen to anyone who has the nerve to say "It (hate that first off!) Was Just a Dog". Arg! Might as well say, "it's just air you breath, it's just food people eat!" No, s/he was your Dog. 💔

    Great family dog only if you are committed to exercising them off leash for an hour a day. I've had multiple German Pointers, some with incapacitating separation anxiety. Starting with short times apart, bones and toys, and a quiet, calm return by you. It's a difficult problem but I love the breeds. Prozac didn't help. Playing with other dogs at the dog park helps. They look forward to dog/dog relationships. Start slow and they will become less dependent on you. It's only natural.
