I’m 52 and have hunted all my life, and never hunted with a shorthair until yesterday! My friend from Florida came up here to Central New York to do some pheasant hunting with me. He brought his shorthair. I never had so much fun hunting pheasants!! That dog was absolutely amazing! An absolute JOY to hunt with!!
I honestly can't imagine how my 20's would have looked like without my GSP. I got Maggie at age 22 (now 29) and she got me through college, breakups, depression and getting fit again. The smartest, funniest, most loving and loyal dog I ever met, and I had dogs all my life.
Mine climbed a sloping tree at Spy Bond, Arlington, Mass, and used to escape our balcony by stepping down and walking the 2 x 4 on the top of the fence, like a cat.
I love our GSP. She is the best dog. She needed 3 hours of running a day to remain balanced when she was young but now that she's 10, an hour a day is good, with a day or two off a week.
Ive had a mix and pure now, real GSPs are so high energy she is considered our "second" family toddler you have to almost have people babysit to have one or just be hiking gods
There was already a GSP in my family when I was born 65 years ago. This dog helped raise me. I have had this breed in my family ever since. I've always believed that the German Shorthair is not for everyone. If you cannot spend a certain amount of time with, are short of patience, live in an apartment, or are just not an outdoors person, get something else. That said, breeders need to interview prospective owners to make sure the puppy is going into a proper home.
Yes, they are not for everyone because many times they outshine their owners. A GSP owner MUST understand the value and demands and the honor of owning a GSP. No other breed in my mind can measure up with this one.
One of the best dogs I ever had! My male was 120lbs on the scale. One of the largest GSP’s I ever encountered. Lived 12+ years. Loyal and, faithful to his last moments.
Awsome dogs! i grew up with pitbulls, but reccentley got a gsp and i have to say this little guy stole my heart! he is so loyal,to the point where he wont leave my side! as far as im concerned ill have a gsp around until the day i die!
Great video. I rescued one three years ago. I didn't now anything about the breed at the time, but I felt in love in a matter of seconds. He is my best companion and for me is the best dog and breed ever. I love him.
GSPs are easily the most popular hunting dogs in Australia for waterfowl and upland game. They are beautiful dogs that love to hunt and are great with families! Thank you for an awesome video :)
This is such a good video on describing GSP. I adopted my GSP when he was year old because his previous owners couldn't handle his hyperactivity. He has always been such a wonderful dog, and at 13, he still runs around like a puppy!
Weimeraners are THE BEST (I've been privileged to have had 4); however, I am enamored with the German Shorthaired Pointer & the Viszla!! 3 absolutely Beautiful Beings!!!
Having bird dogs you distill your life to a succession of short lives, each of them a dogs...from each you learn a little of the joy of living, observing his inexcusable enthusiasm (between naps), his eagerness that makes each day the more significant for being a day in a life so short. You watch the pup grow out of him as he becomes more serious, but there is always a good-natured disposition and his faith in you... There are people who have children in Hope of providing themselves with someone to be there in the end, for your dog, it is only you who are there When that time comes. A right thing, for it puts you in a position of doing something for him after he has done so much for you. ---George "bird" Evans
Greetings from Germany! Sometimes i have my doubts if anyone who is not german could really handle a german hunting dog. But it is so good to see that you really have the right heart and understanding for the gshp!
Yes, non-germans may be able to do the proper handling but compliments to you ; I do not believe any other nation could have produce this perfect, gorgeous, outstandlingly inteligent and yet so easy-to-work-with unique breed.
I grew up with these wonderful dogs. My last GSP was a male and he looked like a Pinto horse...What a wonderful hunter he was...Good boy Pete...We miss you buddy...
I have a 7 year old one she is fat and loves to be outside she loves to cuddle and play fetch she is very smart but she doesn't like to give the ball back love you piper
Best dog breed by far. Fastest dog I've ever seen. Very family friendly dog, very playful, great watch dog, they never bark unless something is really wrong. GSP's can be ferocious when on guard-duty, yet they are very playful with all family members.
Living in the Great Southwest Desert and 38 years of dogs these GSP are by far the greatest dogs of all time when trained properly my 15 year old female died two days ago what a lady she was.
I'm so glad I found this channel and this mini-series filmed at California City. Weims, Vislas, and GSH's are three of my favorite breeds, and it's a rare treat to see them put through their paces in the same setting.
THANK YOU!!!! GSPs are great dogs and it was wonderful to see an interview that concentrated more on the working ability and health of the dogs, than getting overly involved in conformation specifications and show life. I get tired of hearing about "The standard" because in the end, it's all theory until you see dogs in action. There are working dogs with physical details that show folks will say are not correct, yet they go go go, have endurance and brains and prove their use for many years, which you cannot do in a ring. Terry spoke about life with the dogs and what makes them wonderful, and emphasized how they were meant for outdoor activities. Good to know about the eye issues and the low incidence of HD. Hope to see more like these. German WIREHAIRED pointers next perhaps? :) P.S. I hope to donate to your channel soon. My job situation is iffy right now or I'd have sent you a few bucks already!
I've been trying to make this point for a long long time, as long as the dog resembles the breed it's supposed to be, not too extreme either way but not pretentiously measured this nose, or that leg shape, then as far as looks go i couldn't care less. I have a female pointer, chica, sharp as a razor blade. She's not as tall as a 'show' female, and a slight bit stockier, but has drive to work for days. She's a full pointer, but from a working line who seem to be bred for hard field use. I also have a mongrel pit/lab, i use him for rabbiting and hare chasing as his body is shaped just right for speed/agility and he has a real taste for bunnies. My 3rd dog is a cane corso, he's the one i've had the most trouble with trying to explain to people what he is. He's a traditionally bred farmers dog, not a prancy show dog, and i've had so-called 'breeders' tell me he's this, he's that, he's not a corso. He's from the southern italy region i live in, and he's more corso than the VAST majority of corso today, from an old farming line, bred for purpose not for looks, but because his face isn't this, or he's taller than 'standard, they won't accept he is a true corso, but his attitude is absolutely spot on for what the breed was meant for. We bred dogs for jobs, not for looks, they just came with the package.
It was the first and so far only dog I owned. He was a large male, originated from a good line here in Germany and was just a joy to be around. Unfortunately he suffered from arthrosis at the later stages of his life and cancer ended it at just 10 1/2 years. I would not recommend it as a beginner breed. These dogs are very intelligent and come up with solutions on their own. A lack of training and obedience will make for results different from your wishes. They are very very gentle, but also not to be underestimated. Mine was perfectly calm, so long as he was not in a fenced garden, then he would pretty much turn into a Hovaward. It didn't matter whose garden it was, he could be there for the first time and would immediately establish a parameter defense. Oh and you need to be active. Even in the later stages we would walk just shy off 10km a day.
Paisley Vom Cheshams is my first GSP she is 4 1/2 months old can’t believe I’m 51 yrs old now an never had one of these amazing pointers, my Millie who just passed away recently was a top notch pointer miss her dearly ❤️😊
I just lost my Paisley in May, 2024- gorgeous, sweet, intelligent, well trained support dog-perfect! She was 12 years old and very healthy until about age 10 when we started with knee surgeries. She was the runt of the litter but grew to be a statuesque 75 lb beauty. I’m still in mourning. Would love to get another, if I could get a smaller one, but at age 69, a little nervous about it. Rest in peace my sweet Paisley girl🐶❤️🙏…
Your commentary at 5:45 reminded me of an incident in 1975 with our GSP, Latka. I was out of town on business and called my wife. Very early that morning (3 AM) there had been some commotion on the front porch and the dog reacted with a lot of barking and growling. I asked my wife whether she had called the Hollywood (California) police and she said, "No. I didn't want to lose an hour of sleep, and I figured nobody is going to get past Latka." Essentially, she decided to go back to sleep and let the dog handle it.
Great vid! I just happened to stumble across it, as gsp owner or maybe the other way around, it was very informative, by the way, my gsp is 14 yrs old and still hunts like he is a pup!! That’s his pic as my profile pic. Reuger.
this video is super informative! I have a 1yrld Pointador besides having the lab head, and stomach.. he is pure gsp, his temperament, his body and his attitude. And I love him so much. So happy to have him in our family.
Hey buddy in the video..i just want to say i agree with you 110% I had a female for 16 years and was surely the smartest doug and dedicated to do her best for me.and she never left my side. She had a litter of 11 pups. 4 of them pure chocolate like their father and seven white and brown like her. Awesome video and you tell it how it is..i agree..cheers my friend
Really enjoyed this. We have a slovakian rough haired pointer and she is a fantastastic dog. Loves to work but also loves being part of the family unit.
My GSP is the best dog I have ever had. Lived with weimaraners, dalmatians and bouvier. My GSP is so loving never barks at others, sleeps with my cats. Awesome family dogs.
i have a GSP and we don’t take her hunting but we have a decently large backyard and she’ll just run around out there for about 30 minutes. sometimes we take her to this huge field and she just runs around and we’ll play fetch and she’ll chase birds, but she never runs away. she’s a good dog.
Have a 7 month old GSP. Super easy to train! I knew this breed was brilliant before we got it, but I had no idea just how smart they are. It's very easy to set bad precedent with them. Ours is more run 2-3 times a day and she loves it. The natural instinct to find, stalk and point and get is amazing. I've spent very little time working with her on it, she just gets it. "Arabelle, bird" point in the direction, she'll start scanning...find them, stalk to within 10-15', look at me for the go (didn't train it, she just did it), she'll go and keep going. The only tough part was getting her to return, which she does now, but if there is a distraction, she'll tend to want to check it out. Need to work on the distraction thing.
Lovely...we have two ourselves here in Ireland. They need their runs up the highland bogs here locally but it's a joy so we're very grateful to have them...
Never have had a GSP but had decided to go that way. Any lingering doubts I had about the breed were absolutely put to rest thanks to this excellent video.
In the process of adopting a German short hair, catahoula mix. I usually own all terrier breed. (Wire fox terrier, pitbull XL, and dogo argentino). This will make a great addition to the team.
I ended up with one of these by accident from puppy picked from a shelter. Never been a “hunter” and didn’t do any training. I am very active and enjoy the outdoors. “MELVIN” is the most fun dog I’ve ever had for outdoor activities. He takes me hunting and as even brought out the hunting instincts in my corgi mix, and Australian shepherd. They are sooo comical on our long walks. Melvin is a bit crazy in the house but it’s never a dull moment and he is my best cuddler of any dogs I’ve ever owned( all large working dogs). He is the dog I trust the most at the dog park. He is the one who is my best guard dog while we are sleeping. He is the most people friendly and trustworthy. He is everything you could ask of a dog. This dog could definitely stalk and get something if I let him loose in a field. He is a true athlete! Outdoors and in!😂
I've been hunting, training and breeding Shorthairs for over 20 years and that was one of the best most accurate portrayals of a GSP I've ever seen, don't think I could have done better. Had to laugh when he talked about some of the breed traits. Accurate description, key words were "some", "most" and "usually". If you've trained enough shorties you know what I'm talking about.
Excellent video , I have had two males one medium sized the other large 75+ lbs. both all around dogs companion dogs / hunting dogs / water dogs and guard dogs especially the larger male.
It's late at night, all my lights are off, and the volume is low as I watch with my sleeping golden next to me. I just got the golden and she is my first. Really good dog, and although she needs a lot of total overall exercise, her breed variation is built more for power. I had GSP's growing up. If you have the time and energy and hunt get one. Naturally pointers, no upland training need if you train overall impulse control well. Watching these dogs in the field is like watching a living artform.
This is a great video with awesome people who are involved in the scene! Really glad the way this is done, compared to the other TH-cam pointing dog examples.
Wow you’ve made me excited. I’m a software engineer who works remotely and just bought a champion line GSP can’t wait to take him out on his 1st real hunt in due time
Ha there are still dozens of amazing rather local German breeds that haven't made their way to the US yet. For a hunting dog, look up Muensterlaender (Münsterländer as in Münster, Westfalia) for example. They are just as good as GSP but less crazy and softer. They even come in two sizes. Or if you're looking for a protection dog that doesn't shed and won't trigger your allergy, look up Giant Schnauzer.
Terrific video and you have some beautiful dogs. I'm in the UK and currently working with my ex wife's short haired pointer. She's a gorgeous dog and is getting used to flushing birds on a rough shoot. She is absolutely useless at retrieving compared to spaniels and Goldies that I've had before.
Great interview I'm glad you have started to show more of the sporting breeds. I would like to know if this beauty of a breed can get along with other house pets and would love to hear more about English pointers and waimareners . Thank you for the good work....keep it up.
We just got one she is 9 months now I tried to tell my wife she wasn't ready for a hunting dog I am now so glad i didnt talk her out of it. i love her so much. She is a great family dog and so ready to hunt i am going to take her out in the next few weeks we named her Browny instead of Browning since she is girl. its quail, dove and duck season in southern Az so I cant wait to hit the field with her and my son.
I'm agree totally! I have a GSP and she's my partner in crime :) I don't hunting, hiking, mountain biking, snowshoing with her and she's very pleased and she enjoy all the time our time together. I love their intelligence, their energy and their unique sense to enjoy their live!
My family and our dog zoey (she’s a gsp) and we take her out every morning for a walk around a park and we let her free in the woods and near the river. We walk about five miles everyday and she never gets tired. She is also 12 almost 13 and very healthy and ready to live her whole life
Somebody forgot to tell Sage he’s not a lap doggo. Hehe .. I love him so much! After everyone beat me to the new house, the first thing I did after I parked the U-haul was ran to the back yard to see how Sage was enjoying the new huge yard! I found him and we ran full speed and I mean FULL speed around the yard! His expression was priceless! Big baby doggo boy!
Best dog I ever owned. Hands down. Very emotional intelligent, too. Amazing dog. I won't get another dog unless it's a GSP. Gorgeous and in tune with emotions of humans. More than your average dog
GSPs are awesome dogs. I only hunt because spending time in the countryside with these unimaginably gifted, sweet and caring friends makes life complete.
I’m 52 and have hunted all my life, and never hunted with a shorthair until yesterday! My friend from Florida came up here to Central New York to do some pheasant hunting with me. They know when their human is hurting. They understand human emotion very well. I can say the same thing about mine that you have.

Dog moms are gross. Have kids before your ovaries dry up.
Willy Peter wow it must really suck being a virgin. Have fun staying that way bud
5:04"at least 3 times a week for exercise" more like 3 times an hour am i right!!
You are correct lol
Correct haha
😂
I am blessed to have 2.5 acres for Corky to run. He's 95 pounds & will be 15 soon. Such a happy dog. Extremely smart too.
In my experience to have a well-behaved GSP you just need to give it about 35-45 minutes of vigorous exercise - every hour.
These beautiful dogs are extremely agile. We once caught our female, bella, climbing the tree in our backyard
Mine climbed a sloping tree at Spy Bond, Arlington, Mass, and used to escape our balcony by stepping down and walking the 2 x 4 on the top of the fence, like a cat.
i've seen my dog scooter try and get birds from one of our trees a few times. He never actually gets them, but he tries
We have to keep our trees trimmed because our female English-German short hair Pointer
The first couple of times when no one was home our ones jumped the fence (6ft fence) and we found them at a vet 10 miles away
Mine would climb the ladder when i was up on tree
I love our GSP. She is the best dog. She needed 3 hours of running a day to remain balanced when she was young but now that she's 10, an hour a day is good, with a day or two off a week.
Ive had a mix and pure now, real GSPs are so high energy she is considered our "second" family toddler you have to almost have people babysit to have one or just be hiking gods
These dogs have such a "country" look to em. I dig it.
They look like they're manufactured by Barbour!
@Der Alte Fritz I Always thought the same!
They’re the best!

Out of 21 GSPs, half came from people who couldn’t handle them.
thats, how my mum adopted ours. he was supposed to be a truffle dog, but was not concetrated enough, so he was locked for several years
One of the best interviews i've seen so far.

Finally some healthy, athletic looking, working dogs!
Great interview!
Samy Ismael lol my German short haired pointer is the laziest thing in the world
Sean McDermott Yes correct, but I meant a dog that is worked. Not necessarily the working class of dogs.
Gavin Lowery How did that happen? Mine didn't even start to settle down until he was about 8 haha best damn hunting dog i'v ever had though.
Wow! thats strange my little guy doesn't stop lol.

Great video. I rescued one three years ago. I didn't now anything about the breed at the time, but I felt in love in a matter of seconds. He is my best companion and for me is the best dog and breed ever. I love him.

i have a GSP and we don’t take her hunting but we have a decently large backyard and she’ll just run around out there for about 30 minutes. sometimes we take her to this huge field and she just runs around and we’ll play fetch and she’ll chase birds, but she never runs away. she’s a good dog.
I have had 3 GSP. Best dogs I have ever had. They keep me active for sure :)
I don’t know what I’d do without my GSP! She’s a true friend.
Yes great interview. Terry is a beast
I didn't want that to end
Got me one of those. She's fine years old and is one of the best dogs I've ever had in the family
I once saw a German Short haired pointer sneak up on a squirrel. These dogs are amazing.
This will make a great addition to the team.
wonderful description of the kurzhaar♡
Would love to see one on the Airedale Terrier.
What a wonderful film! Thank you very much!
Outdoors and in!😂
The greatest and most majestic dog I've ever seen was my family's first GSP
Damn good looking dogs.
Great looking physiques.
Beautiful disposition.
My GSP puppy is coming home in a week!
Loved our GSP. Wishing for another big female, like her. Fantastic with our kids and truly loving. Miss her deeply.
Fell in love with gsp back when I was 10, now I’m about to turn 21 and I still love them and can’t wait to own one maybe 2
This was the best video Ive seen. Excellent footage and information
Excellent video , I have had two males one medium sized the other large 75+ lbs. both all around dogs companion dogs / hunting dogs / water dogs and guard dogs especially the larger male.
Just lost our GSP. Roxy will be missed. Best breed I have ever had.
Real Working Dog. Thanks.
My GSP was one of the best dogs I have ever had. Miss him greatly, he was house broken in about a week. He also would eat small pine cones.
This is a great video with awesome people who are involved in the scene!
Really glad the way this is done, compared to the other TH-cam pointing dog examples.
Best doc about GSP's out there! 100% (In love with my GSP too!)
Amazing dogs! They do everything at 100%
Wow you’ve made me excited. I’m a software engineer who works remotely and just bought a champion line GSP can’t wait to take him out on his 1st real hunt in due time
Best dogs around in my opinion, I’ve had 3. I wish they didn’t all suffer from hip displasia around the end. Troopers even in the worst of times.
Thank You, Beautiful intelligent dogs. Nice video.
There are so many excellent breeds coming from Germany it's amazing.
She is absolutely useless at retrieving compared to spaniels and Goldies that I've had before.
super dogz..!!.. I had 2 of these breed..👑Lady and Leyla👑(r.i.p)..✌..
BEST breed ever I love them to pieces!
Great interview I'm glad you have started to show more of the sporting breeds. I would like to know if this beauty of a breed can get along with other house pets and would love to hear more about English pointers and waimareners .
Thank you for the good work....keep it up.
מידגה לוחמי הגטאות Yes. They get along great with other house dogs and dogs in jeneral. I actually have 3 female gsps that sleep in bed with me.
I love these videos, please do one on Weimaraners!
Radioamfm I have two Weimaraners hopefully having puppies this heat cycle. Wish me luck!
i have been wanting a Weimaraner one for a while now
I have a 9 year old Weimaraner and a 9 month old GSP, they are both great dogs that I wouldn't trade for the world.
A Wiemeraner video would be awesome.
Thank you for this helpful and enjoyable video about the GSP.
Sounds like the guy I’d want to buy a dog from great introduction. I just never understand why people put thumbs down.
GSPs are beasts! Great video, extremely well done! You should do one on working standard Poodles - lots of hunters run them!
Great informative vid! I'd love to see an Irish Setter vid.
FIELD TRAINING: GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER AND IRISH SETTERth-cam.com/video/BbuxnEYMTmM/w-d-xo.html
Awesome dog. I trained one cold. Meaning I had no experience. Firm hand, run!
PunyBerry if you live alone and work 8 hours, how will they do?
Brilliant breed! Love this video!
You guys legit have the best dog videos. Thanks. Also getting one of the above dogs
I'm agree totally! I have a GSP and she's my partner in crime :) I don't hunting, hiking, mountain biking, snowshoing with her and she's very pleased and she enjoy all the time our time together. I love their intelligence, their energy and their unique sense to enjoy their live!
I grew up with these dog , an they luv to be put to work .🐕
My family and our dog zoey (she’s a gsp) and we take her out every morning for a walk around a park and we let her free in the woods and near the river. We walk about five miles everyday and she never gets tired. She is also 12 almost 13 and very healthy and ready to live her whole life
As a GSP owner, by far the best hunters for game birds and upland game. I own a navhda Pudel Pointer. GSP hands down the best hunting dog.
great breed..... had em for almost 40 years
Somebody forgot to tell Sage he’s not a lap doggo.
