Checking In A Firearm Through Delta Airlines

  • I just went up and declared I had a firearm when checking-in and the process was very pleasant in California. The gun must be UNLOADED!!!
    You can have the ammo in the same container. When picking it up they actually brought it to me. But I think I was supposed to go to TSA Security to get it.

    Since this video title specifically mentions Delta, viewers should be aware that at least at some airports Delta is enforcing a policy different from that listed on their website. Previously it has always been acceptable (and apparently still is with all other airlines) to use a large hard sided container, such as a Pelican case, for your luggage and simply place the gun in this along with other items (clothes, camera equipment, etc.) and lock the whole case. On Delta’s website this option is explicitly listed as allowed: “Firearms must be packed in a locked manufacturer's hard-sided container specifically designed for the firearm, a locked hard-sided gun case or a locked hard-sided piece of luggage.”
    However, I have seen reports from others, and also experienced myself, that for the last several months Delta has not been allowing this option. Instead, they are requiring that you use a small locked case that then is placed inside your unlocked luggage, even though their site goes on to say this: “Handguns may be packed in a locked hard-sided gun case, and then packed inside an unlocked soft-sided piece of luggage. However, a Conditional Acceptance Tag must be used in this case.”
    If you don’t know this before you get to the airport and try to check your locked hard sided luggage with a gun inside, but not also inside a smaller locked gun case, you will be turned away. If you can’t return to your car and leave your gun behind, and get back in time, you will miss your flight and not be eligible for any refund of your fare.
    While using this method to fly with firearms is legal and has been very popular with people who either transport multiple firearms, or other valuable equipment along with their firearm, for decades, and even though their own written policy still posted on their website explicitly allows it, Delta is barring this method of transport at least at several, if not all, airports.

    Several notes. The magazines should be unloaded and the ammo should be in the original box from the factory. Also, the locks on the gun case don't have to be tsa-approved because once you show your weapon is unloaded and inspected you then lock it up and keep the key. If you want to put the TSA lock on the larger suitcase, that's fine. One more thing, in the army we got nailed every time we called a magazine a clip.

    Extra ammo is to be placed in original style packaging so the rounds are separated, not in a plastic bag. Also the case should not be locked with TSA locks.

      @@petevatistas8361 so you’re right certain airlines have different rules. I just flew delta today I had to have ammo in original box which I did but they asked. However with delta you’re not allowed to fly with TSA locks. You have to have your own lock. They didn’t even have me open my case. They made me wait to make sure it cleared with TSA before I went to the TSA check to get to gates. When I got to destination there were no zip ties but I have to pick up bag from baggage claim office. Showed ID got bag and was on my way. After getting to hotel opening my bag didn’t appear that they even moved anything in my bag. But different airport TSA officers may be different

    I'm seeing videos and documents saying opposite things about using and not using TSA approved locks.
    TSA has a master key to open up any TSA approved locks. That means you're not required to be present when they inspect it, thus risk your items going missing.
    Using non-TSA locks means you are required to be present to release the lock(s) and thus prevent possible sticky fingers.

    • @HowYouCanDoItToo
      @HowYouCanDoItToo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I called TSA about what to do and that was what they told me to get. It was real quick but Delta had me go with a TSA person to have it scanned and swiped. They never opened the case at all. Just the suitcase.

      Yes, I think Delta is the only one that does this. They had some guy retrieve his and went in a bathroom came out shooting people. I think what it boils down to is what airline you use and where you are boarding at. No matter what it was smooth as can be for me. I even got my suitcase before everyone else. LOL Hand delivered.

      That is strange. That in it self shows inconsistency within the same airline. That is almost saying you didn't have to the first time you checked your baggage. You leave the airport from first trip and on your return flight they don't when basically it's a new flight back. It makes me second guess myself. Between just you and me we experienced three different check-ins. By the way I enjoyed our conversation. We both utilize our 2nd amendment rights and want to do things right.

    • @HowYouCanDoItToo

      You need to go to deltas page not the first page on google. Here is straight from Delta.com
      Pistols and accessories must be included in one case and contain:
      Pistol telescopes
      Noise suppressors
      A small pistol tool case
      No more than 11 lbs. (5 kg) of ammunition, including case

  • @clamum
    @clamum 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You did it a bit different than Delta guidelines denote (look it up). You're supposed to use NON TSA locks on your hard case, so they can't get in it (and if you want, TSA Approved locks on your outer soft case).
    Ammo is supposed to be in manufacturer's boxes. I've read some don't care if your magazines (NOT clips, for Christ's sake) are loaded, and sometimes they want them unloaded, which I'd just do out of caution anyway.
    Not sure if I wanna deal with flying with my pistol this Christmas, on Delta, but I'm thinking about it.
