- On the occassion of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee's birthday, Ustad Zakir Hussain was invited to perform a tabla solo at the Ramakrishna Mission in Kolkota. In this solo, Zakir-ji plays many traditional compositions. Ramesh Mishra does a superb job accompanying on sarangi.

i heard so many top tabla players like ustad shaukat,, ustad tari, ustad tafu, anindo chatter ji, kumar, yagosh, so many countless ustad tabla players all are great in their work,,,,,, but there is a great difference between ustad zakir hussain and others but the priciosity ,, accuracy. and divinity all is in only ustad zakir .... great great tabla player of the world .... practically and theoretically .........wao amazing tabla

29 to 33 min is just inexplicable.
I have heard cassettes of Ustad Habubuddin Khan and Great Thirkwa Khan Saheb. Keeping all of them ahead in the history of Tabla, I think this is most high class and classical Tabla Solo played. Uploaded in U-tube History . I have once heard Zakirs solo Ahmedabad Jan 97. He is just flawless. Clarty, Quality, Speed, Improvisation and Variation, Direct Disciple of Goddess Swaraswati
At 27:30 minutes Usted Zakir Hussain begins to tune his daya tabla (right hand tabla) with a small hammer. His tuning is part of the performance and is in anticipation of the next three minutes of tabla mayhem. Imagine western musicians tuning their instruments in the middle of a solo performance and making it a part of the composition.
Its very rare to see "Dha" played at 22:28 on such an exact point on lehra it gives me goosebumps.

It's amazing, no comparison with anyone. I have been listening this video since 2012. Clear padant nd so clearly playing tabla. मुझे नहीं लगता कि इनके जैसा कोई और जाकिर भविष्य में आयेंगे । मै अपने आपको धन्य मानता हूं कि मैंने आपके युग में जनम लिया और पहली बार कोटा राजस्थान भारत में 1985 में आप का चमत्कारिक तबला वादन आप से मात्र 5 फीट की दूरी से सुनने का अवसर मिला वो भी पूरे एक घंटे सात मिनट तक । मेरे पास आज भी आप का ऑटोग्राफ सुरक्षित रखा है ।

this is my 30th comment may be. Alla Rakha used to chant Tabla boles taking little Zakir in his arms, now those are coming out in golden words or sound. Having played Tabla for 22 years I would say this is The Best demonstration from Zakir and Must be in University Archival for next generations. I would suggest all of you must see the Speaking Hand documentary on Zakir. If I have been inspired on tabla , personal and professional life on commitment, passion , learning and stay humble, he is perfect example. Ma Saraasari has descented in this formation. i have seen him flawless. He has played this for Ustads not for common people. All rella kaida very well articulated with sound quality tonal variation improvisation. I am.lucky he is in our time though two decades senior.

No. Sometimes people are NOT idiots and have manners. They show these manners by NOT INTERRUPTING a maestro's performance by putting out random noise like clapping in the middle of the show.
They show their appreciation in the end by giving the performance a standing ovation.
That's called manners. That's called Tameez.
If you need further proof...there were other maestro's in the audience as well. In the front row if you noticed the beginning of the video. They showed the same manners.

Trust me Guys, entire next generations will learn Zakir Hussain's Tabla and will try to decode . This must be kept in golden archive in Universities. I am writing it with authenticity and responsibility that Ma Saraswati of Tabla. Once Zakir said in a function with Sultan Khan with a Sanskrit sloka of Ma Saraswati that we play and worship Ma and make flower bouquet . 👍👍
Absolutely...Even now at the age 69 he continues to surprise audiences with high IQ upaj, breathtaking sounds and amazing layakari. However, not a lot of people process that stuff with right attitude and honesty and end up criticizing Ustadji for not being traditional.

I came here by chance! And I would like to say that apart from his beautiful performance, I just loved when he came down the stage to acknowledge elder people (probably his instructors and/or some veteran maestros). It was like getting permission for the performance from those who were his inspiration in this way ... Good for him!

what a performance. Great combination of tabla & sarangi with true legends of music... echoes in mind for hours & hours wow...this is my fourth year of listening this...same like this music, i have no words to say for these legends.

It is so clear that Zakir bhai plays more with his head and his hands merely translate the beautiful patterns that are flowing through his brain. Nobody else makes those complex patterns which is what makes him the greatest.

Ustad is the personification of perfection and humility. Phenomenally talented, he is God's gift to our land. I'm glad that I have had the privilege of listening to his live performance several times. He is as they say in Sanskrit: "Na bhootho, na bhavishyathi".

Lucky Vyas, tabla is not just another percussion instrument. It’s not easily learned from TH-cam lesions. It’s very sensitive instrument. You definitely need a “guru” to learn to play tabla.
It is considered one of the most difficult instruments to learn. Need a lot of practice and devotion.

All of Indian Classical music is based on a steady pulse. It is like the canvas on which they improvise and tell a story. Try to listen to the accompanying instrument, in this case the sarangi, and keep the beat on that cycle. Then keeping this beat, listen to what the tabla playing is doing. Will be a little difficult at first but it will open you up to higher levels of appreciation for this art form because you will start to see some of what is happening.

Saw the guy, with some friends, perform in Stockholm two days ago. Magic! They had pure fun, it seemed, and the guy Hussain himself seemed to be a very gentle and fine person. There were lots of Indians in the audience. And at some few pieces we all clapped to the drumming.

Great son of a great Tabla Nawaz. Knew Ustad Allarakhha since 1982 and met Zakir in 1962 at Mahim Dargah, Mumbai,and played lahra with him . He was brilliant and full of talent and that continues. God bless him.

It may be my 15th comment Not Only he is the best Tabla player who has elevated it from an accompanist instrument to a complete stand alone art form. Tabla has also accepted and taken him as KING. Both the Zakir and Tabla divine spirits are in hand in glove
