FYI on lax sticks. That's the shutter. Lax sticks don't ever flex like that on a shot. I still use mechanical shutter on my R6 when shooting lax for that reason. The biggest challenge I've had with the eye AF autofocus has been it's ability to discern which player I want when taking high traffic shots. I've stayed using the traditional spot focus so I can be specific in telling the camera which person to start with. I look forward to trying the improved capabilities this spring season
I have my R6 set-up to start eye AF at the location the spot/central point AF is set to, and I have a 2nd back focus button for eye AF with servo AF, so then I just point my camera to the person I want to focus on, and start continuous eye AF. It's mostly focus and recomposing, I'm using the central AF point to tell the camera who I want to focus on. Jared did that on this video as well. While this is not perfect, it does help, most of the time, when there are multiple subjects in the frame.
Thank you very much for this video. I watched it several times in the past few weeks, and this was what led me to my decision to buy this camera. And (ta-daa): Tomorrow, I can pick it up at my preferred shop. Greez from Switzerland
Great review for how you were using the R8, but please also review the camera shooting birds in flight and other wildlife. You've made it clear that's not what you enjoy shooting, but a number of your viewers do, and your type of unbiased viewpoint is why they subscribe. Showing how the camera performs using the RF 600-800, a more common kit addition to a $1500. body, would also be appreciated. The majority won't have our RF L's probably ever.
A perfect companion to this camera would be a 50mm F/1.4 IS lens. Costing 1099 USD and weighing around 900g (2 lbs). I would pair it with a 24-105mm f/4 and travel with only these lenses.
I'm just an amateur photographer with the knowledge to get some decent shots with the equipment I currently have (a crop sensor Canon DSLR). Being as I don't want to use my hobby as any kind of a business, I've been waiting for a reasonable Canon camera to come into my life, and I think this is it. I'd rather get the R8 and invest in some slightly better glass then to get the R6 MkII and suffer with some middling lenses. I dabble in all sorts of photography; a student of many, master of none. But the all around capability of this camera, whether it be landscapes, portraits, air shows, sports, astrophotography... I think this body will be able to handle them all. I'm truly excited. Now to drum up the $1500. :) Thanks for the info, 'Fro.
U should do the best camera for like low light photography like for dark setting venues for concerts, clubs, raves would be cool to see which camera handles the quick changes of colors as well as how much grain each camera make produces like the RP, R3, R6 mk2
Would love to see a review on this camera's video capabilities, which I'm sure you will do (even if it's just small part of the overall review for the camera) this is more or less just me being impatient to see it lol
I have a 10 year old Canon T5i Rebel in excellent condition that still serves me well. However it's definitely lagging behind in the video department (1080p 30 h.264) and the AF and low light performance is mediocre by today's standards. I guess it's finally time to upgrade, the R8 looks like a worthy upgrade for the price. I guess I'll keep and demote my T5i to B-cam status, its still in excellent condition and works perfectly so might as well keep it.
Hey Jared, nice video! i do a lot of cycling photography and im turning into a profesional, do you recommend this camera as a second body? row now i have the R6 and work perfect for me but i need a backup body.
Great video and awesome action shots I’m thinking about getting a canon camera for wildlife, sunset, sporting events and landscape if money not a problem what do you think is a better all around camera the new R8 or the R6 Mark ll
Unrelated to the camera review, but I went to see the Globetrotters a couple weeks ago and I enjoyed the show. The "Dazzle" guy is basically doing like a circus-level juggling performance, and they had a good mixture of their classic old jokes and some new gags too.
Jared great video, I noticed you're switching between an expanded mode and Face / Eye + tracking, why do you do that, why not single spot etc? I am still learning the r5 and the focus modes, taking it out to shoots every day. I used to shoot with canon with a 5Dmk2, mk3 and then I switched to a D850. I mostly do product shoots.
I'm waiting for Canon to figure out where they want the rear dial and power button to be. Not to mention some mid-range RF zoom lenses. Especially after they increased the price of the 70-400F4 by $500 since I tried one with the Canon R several years ago.
Great video as usual. I have the Canon R6 Mark II and Canon 90D. I'm looking to replace the 90D and get a 2nd Mirrorless Camera, but I don't want to spend a ton of money. I was thinking about the R, R7, or maybe this R8. Push come to shove. Maybe I can grab a pre-owned R6. Any thoughts?
I compared the R6 (not II) to the R8 I own in the store and the R6 just focuses faster, and more definitively. There is no guessing in the R6. I've played around with all sorts of settings and cannot get it to match. Also, there are more useful controls in the R6 menu than the R8. And the viewfinder is better. The R6 is a nice step up from the R8... I read a lot of your reviews (and others) and it makes it seem like the R8 is just as good as higher end models when you compare them. In the real world, using the latest copies on the market, there is a noticeable difference to me. I just got an RF100 2.8L and it's ok, but it misses focus a lot. I'll keep messing with settings (I've watched yours and others' videos on all the settings.)
As a Nikon dslr shooter, when I decide to switch to mirrorless it will likely be Canon. Too many ‘meh’ reviews of the Nikon Z cameras regarding auto focus. Imho Nikon needs to get on their horse and either fix the AF issues with the current crop of Z cameras or introduce new ones that match the competition.
Nikon has embarrassingly bad af. They should be ashamed of themselves. I wish I never bought a z7ii, thought they would improve the af but they have done bugger all !
They should be able to, the z9 has solid af and all around better than dslr. However, canon and Sony are still ahead. Nikon is however continuing to update and improve their autofocus on the z9 expend 7 chip which when it is put in other bodies should be pretty much perfected with all the random glitches gone.
Jared, help me out! I’m looking to get a nicer camera and get more into photography. I’m looking at the Canon R8 or Sony a6700. I’ve had a Canon DSLR and the a6000 in the past and liked them both. I currently use a Canon SX40hs to shoot my daughter’s dance team at sporting events. I like it because of the nice zoom from the bleachers. The pictures aren’t always the greatest, especially in low light. Besides the dance team, I plan to shoot some nature photos. What would you recommend? Thanks!!
Great review and great shots! Have you got any plans to shoot any 'faster action' with the R8? I am specifically talking about Motorsports or Aviation as I am very interested to see what the limits are for the rolling shutter given the lack of mechanical shutter. Love the channel and the podcast.
Impressive. Looks better at tracking than my R5 and Z9 (they both still get the shots). Good price too, but too bad it’s half RP. Makes it a no go for me.
Thanks Jared, really helpful. That auto focus tracking is amazing! Super fast and accurate. Apologies if I missed it but did you use the new ‘false shutter sound on the electronic shutter mode?’ And if so, is it any good? Hopefully, not too loud?
@@fromquake Yes I love it, you set the volume as you need, you are able to tell when shoot. But the shutter is so fast even on the slowest setting, its hard to take just one shot.
alright, looks like the money i spent on the nikon z9 wasn't worth it comparing to this $1500 camera only in terms of tracking... the tracking in this video for the canon r8 is absolutely incredible!!!
I sold my Z7II at a big loss after I tried the R7 and A74. I'm holding out for a 30mp stacked sensor though. Canon's RF lenses are quite expensive, and I'm done adapting. Tamron offers Sony users some decent f2.8 glass which is a great value, light, and compact.
@@skyrunr You gotta sell a kidney or two, to be able to afford RF lenses unfortunately. Switched to Sony and never looked back. First lens I owned was the tamron 28-75 2.8 and I took that thing everywhere. Recently got the 70-180 and been shooting weddings with just these two lenses. Probably going to invest in some primes next. Cant beat Sony when it comes to great lenses at affordable prices.
@@b47d16 I paired the 70-180 with the 20-40f2.8, a Samyang 45f1.8, and the kit lens (used.) For now I'm using an A7C, a bit less dynamic range than the Z's, but I'm making it work. Not to mention how good the battery life is! Hoping the A7CII has a joystick and 30mp. If Sony would just work on making them more comfortable in hand!
I have the canon 5d mark iv and am considering selling my camera and L lens to purchase the r8 and some glass. Think that’s a good switch? I want to go mirrorless AND I also want something that I can travel with and shoot content. I primarily use my camera for video.
I photograph events such as weddings. I bought a new R6II. Should I buy a new R8 for a backup camera or keep my old R6I...? {If I sell the R6I, I can buy a new R8 with this money} Thank you very much for all the reviews you do!
I would like to know how it goes with the video side! I was about to by a R7, but... I'd like to know how the R8 does with videos! Thanks! Great tuto dude! 😊
Jared could you recommend me a camera for pet (cats) mostly indoor still and in action photography for beginner? I am thinking either r7 or r 8 which one will be better for such purposes? 😊
Canon always make great cameras… great colours, god speed AF, fast readout e shutter damnnnn… thank God unlike youtubers taking about video capabilities of a camera, so boring.. camera is to take pic, cinema line to shoot video professionally
Great video as always...!! Jaret, you said that the R8 have almost the same capability as the R6mII and my question is now that is better the R8 or a R7??
from the capability standpoint R6 mark ii is the best in R lineup currently, it even surpasses the R3 in autofocus capabilities. Since R8 has the same capabilities (mostly) to R6 mkii, its easy to assume that R8 is better than the R7
The main difference between them is that the R8 is a full frame camera and the R7 is a crop sensor... It just depends on what you shoot which is going to be better for you.
Thanks Jared! Sorry, but did I miss the part on which lens you used? Did you use the lens that comes with the EOS R8 camera kit? The RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens? Does anyone know which lens he used?
The R3 and gripped R6/R5 both have portrait grips to make shooting in portrait orientation easier and more comfortable...how was it for you shooting the R8 with those adapted tele lenses with your hand turned? Couldn't be comfortable I imagine...
So i got a question for you.. with being close to the same price as the canon 1dx mk ii.. would you still pick the r8? I have been trying to figure out what to buy. I the canon sl2 (200d)
Jared have you tried to photograph birds in flight , that's a lot faster than basketball or any other sport , try putting that camera to that test , and does this camera have an optional vertical grip .
I'm still waiting for the review of the R6 Mark II (not just pReviews). It's easily the best camera in its class (followed by the A7IV and then the S5 II) but almost nobody covers this outside of its initial release (even Pete Mckinnon only did a preview and nothing else and Irene Rudnyk, the second biggest Canon ambassador, hasn't done any review).
Jared, you were shooting at 1/2500sec on some shots. Why wouldn't a mechanical shutter give you a "rolling shutter" effect? Remember that at high speeds you are shooting through a moving slit. Logically the moving subject is in a different place as that slit moves across the sensor. Somebody explain to me why a mechanical shutter doesn't give rolling shutter effect, on moving subjects, at high shutter speeds.
All looks great, but can you reduce the electronic fps down from 40fps to say 15fps and also get a longer burst time. I shoot surfing and don’t want 40fps or 6fps mechanical which is a bit slow. Thanks, Paul, UK.
This is my first full frame camera and comes with standard lens 24-50mm. Can you recommend me one or two lenses at the most regardless of the price that you say cover most of general photography. I’m not a professional photographer. Thanks

What type of person should get this camera and who should get an R7 instead? I know they are very similarly priced (or at least, in the market where I am)
Thanks for the cool video. I am doubting enormously. I started as a photographer two years ago. I now have my own photo studio. I mostly shoot portraits and fine art. I also occasionally shoot videos for companies. I have been using an a7ii on loan for the past few years. Now I want to buy my camera myself. I have a huge doubt between the R8 or R6 (not the markii) and can't make a choice after all those videos on TH-cam. I watched your comparison but still in doubt.
I’m considering snagging this camera. I’ve boxing and recently pro wrestling with an M50. The price helps me but is it 6fps or 40fps and no in between. I mean to not get any warp with the electronic shutter can I lower it manually to like 30? Does it have that option?
I’m so happy for everyone that will get this camera. The more and more innovation and competition that occurs between companies hopefully more and more people will continue photography and professional cameras.

I am in to the 2:46 mark this is un believable WOW going back in
Thank Jared! I appreciate all that you do!
AF is lookin solid!
I don’t think my Sony A1 would track this well. It’s impressive.
A perfect companion to this camera would be a 50mm F/1.4 IS lens. Costing 1099 USD and weighing around 900g (2 lbs). I would pair it with a 24-105mm f/4 and travel with only these lenses.
Oh yeah. Canon, when will we get IS nifty fifty, damn it? Even if f/1.8 mark 2 for 400-500!
I agree!
Cemented my choice for R8. And thanks Jared for introducing lacrosse!
This is EXACTLY my case. I feel like I wrote this comment 😂. Love to see it.
I'm almost sold on the R8 as a compliment to my R7. I just wish it had a bigger body to accommodate the same LP-E6NH rather than the E17.
I'm waiting for Canon to figure out where they want the rear dial and power button to be. Not to mention some mid-range RF zoom lenses. Especially after they increased the price of the 70-400F4 by $500 since I tried one with the Canon R several years ago.
Love the FroPacks! Is there any Plans for a FroPack 4?
Yup! Currently about halfway done, will be released this year
I love SKITTLES too have them all but it is the best - wow the R8 have I wasted money on my R3 and R6 MKII ?
No you haven’t.
R6, R3 and R6mii and R5 can always have firmware update,.
@@froknowsphoto Thanks :)
Have you done a R7 vs R8 which is better? Both have some amazing pros and cons and prices the same just about
Great review and even better photos cheers
Love it Jared, looking forward to picking up my R8!
Happy to hear that same fro knows photo after all these years
I compared the R6 (not II) to the R8 I own in the store and the R6 just focuses faster, and more definitively.
The current crop of cameras is going on 3 years old. There’s no magic fix.
Convinced me to purchase this camera. Do a full review Jared thanks!
Thanks!!
I figured I would post this here in case others can show interest too.. Can you do an R7 vs R8 review? I'm really torn between these 2 right now.
It’s going to take a min but we’re going to film a comparison.
Great review and great shots! Have you got any plans to shoot any 'faster action' with the R8? I am specifically talking about Motorsports or Aviation as I am very interested to see what the limits are for the rolling shutter given the lack of mechanical shutter. Love the channel and the podcast.
Thanks 👍 looking forward to see you review of it's video features too
Been watching you a while. These photos came out awesome.
I shoot in silent.
@@froknowsphoto …..and in RAW
If the menu works like the R6 MKII, there is an adjustment for the “false” shutter sound volume.
@@fromquake Yes I love it, you set the volume as you need, you are able to tell when shoot. But the shutter is so fast even on the slowest setting, its hard to take just one shot.
@@robertschwarz8702 great thanks Robert. That’s good to know. At least with some sound you have an idea of how many images you are taking.
alright, looks like the money i spent on the nikon z9 wasn't worth it comparing to this $1500 camera only in terms of tracking... the tracking in this video for the canon r8 is absolutely incredible!!!
That is a correct statement right there.
I photograph events such as weddings. I bought a new R6II. Should I buy a new R8 for a backup camera or keep my old R6I...? {If I sell the R6I, I can buy a new R8 with this money}
Thank you very much for all the reviews you do!
Looks super nice. No IBIS is a bit of a downside for me, but overall it seems like a great camera.
RF lenses have IS anyways
@@zegzbrutal True but IBIS can work in conjuction with lens IS to improve performance.
RF lens IS alone is stronger than Sony IBIS. So I wouldn't worry too much
IBIS is not that great because it wobble.
I prefer the movie digital stabilization even though there's a cropping vs IBIS.
I'm sold. I could only imagine how stills shots would come out.
It just depends on what you shoot which is going to be better for you.
r8 makes r7 useless. unless you do wildlife photography
9:53 the bleachers look like they have warping in the background, not just the stick. Did I see banding also in lax pix?
Please make a sports photography video for the R6 Mark ii as well 🙏
Thanks Jared! Sorry, but did I miss the part on which lens you used? Did you use the lens that comes with the EOS R8 camera kit? The RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens? Does anyone know which lens he used?
EF 600mm
The R3 and gripped R6/R5 both have portrait grips to make shooting in portrait orientation easier and more comfortable...how was it for you shooting the R8 with those adapted tele lenses with your hand turned? Couldn't be comfortable I imagine...
How do you compare it to the R7?
So i got a question for you.. with being close to the same price as the canon 1dx mk ii.. would you still pick the r8? I have been trying to figure out what to buy. I the canon sl2 (200d)
Jared have you tried to photograph birds in flight , that's a lot faster than basketball or any other sport , try putting that camera to that test , and does this camera have an optional vertical grip .
For a min I forgot this video was about auto focus lmao those globetrotters are damn good man😂😂
I just purchased the canon r8, im waiting to try it out
Fro knows fro-toe!! Whens the R5 mk2 coming out? I'm waiting to buy it!
Cracking shots Jared
First?
how was the experience not having an autofocus joystick to switch between lockons and targets?
Totally fine. I set the d pad to move points if needed. But it’s basically not needed because of how fast the af is.
@@froknowsphoto okay that's amazing to hear
I'm still waiting for the review of the R6 Mark II (not just pReviews). It's easily the best camera in its class (followed by the A7IV and then the S5 II) but almost nobody covers this outside of its initial release (even Pete Mckinnon only did a preview and nothing else and Irene Rudnyk, the second biggest Canon ambassador, hasn't done any review).
Dude chill out. You got your moneys worth. The R8 has the same sensor as the R6 ii. The only difference is IBIS.
Hi, any info on the possibility of using a lower frames per second with mechanical shutter, say 15 fps?
Jared would you say that R8 has same AF tracking capability as R50 ? Or is one better than the other?
This is my first full frame camera and comes with standard lens 24-50mm.
Can you recommend me one or two lenses at the most regardless of the price that you say cover most of general photography. I’m not a professional photographer. Thanks
Thanks, Jared!!
i really need more Harlem Globetrotters in my life, they are freaking amazing, they have always been freaking amazing
glad you did a review! I really think this ones for me :)
Do you have any RAW files available from the R8? Specificially I'd like to see the indoor sports.
The basketball isn’t warped. It just bounced off the ground and is moving with force. No camera flaws!
Jared, perhaps the ball was actually that shape as it bounced off the floor.
I can't wait to get my R8 in the mail. I preordered one when it came out but I'm still waiting for it to arrive. All I'm concerned about is the battery life
How does the AF work when you're shooting basketball and you've got multiple players in the shot?
Im waiting for the LUMIX s5ii realworld 😅
I dont thing he will review that camera
I don't think Jared is on the Panasonic "share with" list.
I watched your comparison but still in doubt.
cannot deny this deal from Canon
Will going to lower burst rate (20fps) show warping? and is a V60 instead of V90 will have effect on the warping?
I’m considering snagging this camera. I’ve boxing and recently pro wrestling with an M50. The price helps me but is it 6fps or 40fps and no in between. I mean to not get any warp with the electronic shutter can I lower it manually to like 30? Does it have that option?
