    If your riding lawn mower is smoking it can only be one thing. Gas is getting into somewhere it shouldn't be. With a car, it can be coolant and leaking gaskets. But with a riding mower there isn't any coolant, it's an air cooled engine. So the smoke is from gasoline. The problem is typically from the carburetor getting stuck and the float staying open. I had this problem, had to drain the oil (it had gas in it), disassemble the carburetor, clean it, add a filter and gas shut off valve. The mower has worked great ever since. So if you are getting white smoke coming out of your engine, look at the carburetor and try to see / fix the problem.

    YOU saved my mower & ME🤗....THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I am very thankful for you posting this video. I'm a recently a single mother and needed to cut my grass but, it was my first time, & don't know jack about mowers lol. It was doing a really job for about an hour but then I noticed the white smoke. Freaking out, I shut it off but had no idea what to look for. I searched Google and came across your video, it was the first one & followed your instructions......WALLAH IT WORKS GREAT!! Had a neighbor look at it and he told me it was done & needed a new one. He was probably giggling away watching me repairing it in my garage but, I had the BIGGEST SMILE riding it the next day lol. So, thank you so much & I will definitely share this video with everyone I know❤🤗😘

    Thanks for the info. And old timer at a lawn mower repair shop once told me "There's only two things that can go wrong with a lawn mower engine - gas or spark ... and it's rarely ever the spark".

    Your diagnosis help me fix my riding mower. I was terrified that I was going to need to buy a new one. All I had to do is drain some oil and drain the fuel. Runs like a champ. I'm glad I did a little research and came across your video. Thanks again 🙂

    OMG....the beginning of your vid is totally my story, except my mower was free. Thanx so much for your easy to understand information. I've never done any work on a mower of any type in my life and had no idea where to even start. I took the carburetor off and basically just cleaned it, as the float needle was still in good shape and ddnt need replacing. Drained and replaced oil and gas as well. I didn't add the little filter thingy though. That's only because I'm just too lazy. At any rate, she runs like a charm and now I can happily mow my little 2acres on my free riding mower instead of using my push mower. Thanx again!

    You definitely helped us save some $$$. We had someone look after our riding lawn mower and was told we need to replace the engine which would cost us about $800+😢. I decided to do some research and saw this video so i thot why not give it a try. We cleaned the carburator and changed the oil and oil filter and its no longer smoking 🎉. Thank you so much for helping us do this little tingkering. Im no expert in doing mechanical stuff but suprisingly this video inspired me.

    Thank you, I took your advice to set the throttle in low speed when I shut off the riding mower. It worked, I was about to return it after having it three days, I just bought it. When the mover was delivered the guy start it up, white smoke shot out from the exhaust. I was thinking because it was new it was ok, but the next day I started it up more smoke came out, It would only happen with the first start up. I came to TH-cam for some suggestions, once again thank you for your advice.

    Great video! Been helping my neighbor with their lawn mower as I use it to mow their lawn. I've recently done an oil change, and it seemed as if it smoked a little. I didn't over-fill it. Level was right on. I've noticed it's using oil, but I think that's because the mower is doing exactly what you showed under the air filter, and blowing gas out. The new oil is now runny and has a gassy smell to it. I'll drain the oil, and have a look at all you mentioned. Should fix me up pretty well. Again, great video, simple, easy to understand and very descriptive. Take care!

    Thanks man! After several issues, one after another (battery then solenoid), my Ariens riding mower started spewing a MASSIVE amount white smoke, sputtering and dying after only a little bit. Just knew that it was a cracked head gasket, or something equally bad. Your video pointed me in the right direction. Drained the oil, which was 1/2 gas, and changed it out. Then I drained the carb, by just taking off the backfire preventer, and sprayed carb cleaner on the plug, and up into the carb, without even pulling the bowl off. I put it back together, and it started up. Had a little bit white bit of white smoke, some sputtering, but then it stopped and leveled off. Managed to get about half of the yard cut, but then it started up again. Did the same carb routine as before, and got it going again, and managed to finish the yard. Had to make that the priority, as the grass / weeds gotten out of hand since it had been a week between the initial problems. :-) Guess I'm going to have to devote some more time to pulling the whole thing apart, and seeing how it looks, but I just wanted to let you know that you were a huge help to this IT. guy with few mechanical skills. Oh, and I'm going to follow your lead, and add the shut-off valve as well. Right now, I've just pulled and plugged the fuel line.

      Last year mine blew a head gasket. That'll throw white smoke. If it didn't split, you may can retorque the head down. Be sure to run some ethanol treatment through there. That'll help too.

    the needle you showed is to stop gas from seeping into the crankcase when it is not running and ruining the oil. It sometimes doesn't hold back the gas is why you needed a shutoff valve. It does not control how much gas gets in . That float controls how much gas is in the carb and an adjusting screw controls how much gas gets in the engine. When the switch is turned on it sends electricity to that solenoid below the carb and it contracts and allows gas to get to the bowl of the carb. Ask a dealer. Thanks Stan P

    a lot of these riding mowers use a vacuum powered fuel pump and when they get old they can get a pin hole leak in the diaphragm and the vacuum will cuck gas into the crank case until the crank case gets so full it starts pushing the oil and gas mixture out the crankcase breather into the air cleaner and into the carb intake causing the same engine symptom.

    The moral to the story with these big OHV and flat-head throwaway tractors is fuel flow. These things will run forever if you don't overstress them...keep the fan and cooling fins clean....change the oil and filter...and install a fuel shut-off valve in the line as in this vid. Use real clamps and not twist wire for same. And if you ever notice that the oil level is RISING, appears very thin and is starting to smoke, rebuild or replace the carb.

    1/2 the people fixing these motors are from the South and I can barely understand what they're saying. One guy says "easy solution" then 10 minutes into the video, his engine is totally tore down.
    Since my mower runs, it moves perfectly well, I can't imagine the problem is a bad piston or ring or whatever. So I hope the carb is the problem.

    The needle and float fills a bowl that the carb draws from when it needs gas. That is a seperate needle. I would also suggest putting the shut off valve closer to the carb that way you can shut it off and run the carb out of fuel if you are not going to run it for a long time. Easier to fill back up when you start it.

  • @brucer1220
    @brucer1220 ปีที่แล้ว

    A gravity fed tank when fuel flows through the carb into engine while off is key ..... also, Nikki Carbs tend to leak gas into the engine because of tiny o-ring type seal that allows the float to leak gas into the carb intake via gravity. It's kind of like siphon action.

    Oh geez, I pulled the riding mower out today, last time I used it was probably in November. There was about a quarter tank and I filled it up. It had ran beautifully last season. I had to jump start the battery but once it got running an obscene amount of white smoke was pouring out. It would rev up a bit and then slow and cycled like that-maybe 10 seconds of revving and then 3 or 4 seconds slowing down. I couldn't see from all the smoke but when I backed it up some, it had been spraying black oil out the front and had it dripping from the front. Anybody with any ideas as to the diagnosis?

    I had white smoke come out of mine this morning. It got down to freezing last night. Yesterday it rained all day. It wouldn't idle at first, now it's okay. Oil is good and clean. Here's my question, is it bad to start a riding mower below a certain temperature? Say 40⁰F? I ran it today to grind up leaves under an old maple tree before they blew away. With the ground wet, they mulch up better and don't just fly out the chute.

    Quick question?...
    I got a similar mower about a year ago and cleaned it up and changed the oil and battery. It has been running good, but when I leave it in neutral idling and get off it for more than a minute or two it starts to do a similar thing, little bits of smoke start to come out exhaust and then some backfiring. Any idea why it only does this when in neutral and no one is sitting on it? Of course the blades are off then as well.

    Hey thanks for the video and I hope that's my only problem. Just purchased a lawnmower and he threw in another one for about 100 bucks. He said the motor is going bad and actually had a box of parts, There's a drip of oil coming off the bottom of the engine and it actually drove fine up in to my trailer and when I got at home I drove around a few times as well. Then suddenly a great plume of smoke filled the backyard. Coming from the muffler. I shut it off and let it cool. And it did start again. Do you think it's just gas in the oil or is it something more serious like seals or rings or something.
    Thx

      If u haven’t fixed it yet it’s just oil getting into the carb from the engine so just drain your oil back down to the dipstick level and fire it up try clean your filter if it’s covered but should work from just draining

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes i turn off the valve when i'm not using it, just in case so gas doesn't leak in and flood it.
      And yes it could be the stuck float. That might have actually been my problem. When i engaged the mower blades it put a strain on the motor and was trying to suck in more fuel, which caused the float to get stuck down.
      Either way it's something wrong with the carburetor. But a pain if it happens a lot and you have to drain and refill the oil every time.

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure, but i would guess it's a carburetor issue?? Letting too much gas pour into the engine on the hill, or not providing enough gas. But not really sure.

    • @GkFn

      Water in the gas tank. Water is heavier than gasoline and is at the bottom of the tank. When you tilt the tractor, it flows and falls less into the hose to the carburetor.

  • @brian8095
    @brian8095 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm having the same issue with the same exact riding mower! My question is, did the problem ever return or is it still running well? Its odd to me that this only happens 10 seconds after the blades are engaged. What does activating the blades have to do with the gas and oil? Why is the oil and the gas mixing together? Thats what I'm curious about. The float cuts off the fuel supply when the little cup is full, so you're saying that more fuel pours in when I engage the blades? How? Why? I drove it for 10 minutes without the blades, and it was 100% fine. No smoke. But the second I engaged the blades the white smoke fogs up my whole block! How is it even related? I'm gonna try the remedy in the video and also change all the filters. Maybe a new spark plug as well.
    I mean... oil was literally spraying out from the muffler. How did they blades cause that??

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No the problem didn't return, it just happened once, and stopped once the carburetor was cleaned.

      Maybe try cleaning the carburetor first. It's cheaper and easier. Could be the float is sticking, feeding the engine too much gas ??????

    Hello! I have a grasshopper zero turn mower and after 5 minutos of running time when I'm mowing my lawn white smoke comes out of the muffler when I pull forward. It does this every ones in a while. Any idea what it might be?? Thanks in advance

      well, if it's an air-cooled engine - the only thing that could cause the smoke is gas or oil.
      So somehow gas or oil is getting somewhere it shouldn't.
      i would clean the carburetor - maybe spray cleaner in it

    It wont matter one bit where the throttle is while the engine is not running.

    Dont use 5w30....use straight 30 weight oil for small engine 4 strokes

    That’s part on the carburetor does not do what you said that it regulates the fuel go into the carburetor . That is not truth. The only thing that does is when you turn the key On . Let’s fuel going in the carburetor when you turn it off it turns off the fuel go into the carburetor yes . When that stops working. Gas go into your engine block.Yes it is a great idea to put it on and off valve in your fuel line thank you
