Interesting the amount of flashing on the head casting when you were showing the push rods.
Another great information on the how to,my tractor smokes a little bit of blue smoke but too bad, and is there little to do to it for the time being until whenever,I'll catch ya on the next one.
My LA-115 19.5 BS was smoking more blueish than white & backfiring once shut off. I love my tractor cheap and easy to repair compared to the higher-end models. $14.00 head gasket did the trick! I like that tip find TDC first before removing the head.

Someone must have taken my Briggs Vanguard 16 HP Twin apart.before.
It came on a piece of equipment that I bought used. I had a blown head gasket
that blew-out on the intake side of head. When disassembling I was careful to
separate all parts so it went back together exactly as it was. My aluminum push
rod was on the exhaust side! And that's the way I put it back. Strange thing was
I was expecting to see a hairline crack in the head gasket, instead i saw a large
chunk of it missing. Have you ever seen something like this before?
Good info. I would have never thought white smoke would be oil. I have a E100 that has white smoke on startup. Probably will take off head at some point this summer and just try gasket first.

While I don't have a zero turn John Deer I do have a D130 lawn tractor. Occasionally when it starts a good puff of smoke comes from the muffler and takes 30 seconds or so to clear up. I'm "assuming" it's oil somehow finding it's way into one of the cylinder but perhaps it's not. In the spring I'll plan on adjusting the valves and doing a compression test on both cylinders to see if one's showing signs of a problem.

It’s not the machine that has the issue, it is the single cylinder Briggs and Stratton overhead valve engines that have the head gasket issue. I think your John Deere has a twin cylinder engine and If that is the case? You may have a valve seal possibly leaking. The twin Briggs and Stratton engines are good but yes you can have that slight smoke in the beginning on start up. As long as you are not adding a lot of oil every time out then your most likely ok. Check your spark plugs as they will tell you the story as I showed in the beginning of this video. Thank you for watching, supporting my channel and commenting!

Can’t beat OEM gaskets and parts
Really not that expensive but China stuff will make trouble later
Hi -- just in process of doing mine as I had a broken pushrod. Have put in new pushrod and replaced gaskets, put head back on and I did a big no-no -- I didn't realize there was a proper torque sequence out there and I'd just kind of done my own sequence starting at top middle, then bottom, opposing corners, etc. Did them all in a few steps before finishing at 220 inch lbs. I haven't done anything further yet as I need to buy a feeler gauge to properly adjust valve clearances, but what would you do in my situation? Just risk leaving the bolts as they are... or crack loose and re-torque with correct sequence & steps? Also I've seen diagrams from older manuals with slightly different sequence and only up to 220 inch lbs -- whereas on yours it says 250 inch lbs and slightly altered sequence. Is yours the newly revised one that I should be using? If so -- having only torqued to 220 inch lbs... should I just torque them as they are using the correct sequence up from 220 to 250?

I have a single deck MTD that won’t disengage, have you produced any single deck videos that show how to fix this problem. I watched your twin deck fix but I am not sure that there is a disengagement plate on my MTD.

Yes, yes you can take a chance that your head is not warped and put a gasket on and go and I have depending on what the customer wants but when I do a job, it’s my name on it going out the door and I much rather do the job that I know will not come back. New head, valves, valves seats, head assembly and all gaskets needed is the correct way to do the job that is going out of my shop. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Can the head be machined?
@@randyritzheimer4765 I’m sure it can but the question is how much will it cost verses buying the new head assemble. If you send it out to get machined, you will need to remove the valves and at least lap the valves back in and replace the intake oil seal. I have had some luck with just replacing the head gasket and it’s a 50/50 chance your ok. If I didn’t run a business, I most likely would perform more just replacing the head gasket but it’s my name on the machine going out the door and I want it correct. My Briggs was 25 years old and the head gasket blew up so I got a a Kawasaki they’re way better

Great video. When using your 1/4 inch ratchet, do you have to use impact sockets with that or are regular sockets ok?
You can use both. I use non impact and have had no issues.

I use all snapon sockets crome and all my 57 years I’ve used air impacts on them, no big deal with replacement by dealer
That’s not a impack racket, there’s a big difference between them but it doesn’t matter to the sockets
I have a 20hp B & S that smokes blue while running, could that be a blown head too? Great video.
Normally blueish black is fuel. If the engine sounds like it is choking while the bluish smoke is coming out, it may be that your choke is stuck in the on position. You can tell that your head gasket is blown when your adding oil constantly and the oil is very black.

I have no oil filter on that engine, just like mined210 is that normal?
Some engine models had oil filters and some did not.
I just replaced my head gasket on a Craftsman with B&S Intek Gold 20 HP. I did not however replace the head itself. So far so good, but I hope mine does not have any warping that you stated his one has. Is that typical for all B&S motor, or just that particular engine model?
The single cylinder overhead valve engines were and still are the ones that have the blown head gasket issue. Technically the head gasket should not blow and there are different thoughts on why it happens. Normally it is the engine overheats at some point and that’s what causes it but I believe it is a poor design. You most likely will be ok but when I’m doing a job for a paying customer, I do not want to do the job twice and get a bad reputation in the process. Glad to hear you tackled the job yourself!!

Much cheaper to have head resurfaced than a new head. Just about any machine shop can do that for you.
Having a head resurfaced is much cheaper than a new head. I had a machine shop do a valve job, and resurface.. about half the cost of a new head. The engine ran better than ever
One thing I do is clean the head, then use 150 grit sandpaper on a flat surface and the mounting side against the sandpaper . Move in a figure 8. Until the original machine marks are gone. With the block I use a long flat file with 150 grit sandpaper and do the same with the block. Be sure to stuff the cylinder and push rod with paper towels to keep grit out. Works for me, plus I wipe down with carburetor cleaner before assembly.
If your oil is black or even dark brown, shouldn't you change the oil? I mean I would. P.S. you and your camera guy do a great job. LOL I got to the end of you video. So I guess that answers my question.
Hi Steven, because the customer has received yearly service the oil should not have been so black which was very concerning. Hence the blown head gasket. I was just pointing out that very dark oil even when you’re servicing your machine regularly may be another problem. And Yep at the end of the video we did change the oil and filter.
