  • Last time, we showed you how to diagnose a smoking lawn mower, remove and clean carburetor and change the oil. This is all fairly easy to do and is great DIY project to save some money on repairs. Learning how to repair your own equipment can also be very rewarding. Try it before you take it to a shop!
    But this time, we are fixing this problem for good! If your riding mower is putting of white smoke, you have to watch this video!

    I installed one of those stoppers a few years ago. After I am done cutting. I turn the valve off and let the mower “burn” all the gas in the line. It will just die. Doing this protects your carb and stop gas from going everywhere. But I love it.

    I've learned that " always " install the " stopper " after the Filter. This will prevent big chucks or small chunks from building up through time and clogging up your stopper. I know, some People would say that what happen when I needed to change the Filter? Well, anytime you change the Filter, you should always clean your Gas Tank just in case anything big stuck in the Tank.

    I know the valve is much cheaper than the filter, but I have a mower with the valve on it and I can't count how many times that I forgot to close it after mower leading to all the oil needing to be drained. Great option if you have a good memory, bad if you forget because you have other things to do and closing the valve doesn't enter your mind until it's too late.

    Another thing you can do to fix and improve your engines flooding problems and performance is to refit a old style carb with the brass float and adjustable main jet setup.
    I've done several and being able to change the overly lean emission compliant factory setting (choke half on to make it run right) we are forced to live with due to fixed jet junk carbs, makes a big difference in how the engine runs and how much fuel it uses.
    Plus for you guys who, like me are cheap, the adjustable jet carbs can be set to run E30 and higher blended fuels too.

      what is the name of these old style carburetors and where can i get a few of them?

    • @tcmtech7515
      @tcmtech7515 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rlt1287 Just research the carbs used on any of the old Briggs and Stratton, Tecumseh, Wisconsin, Kohler, Onan, and most any other engine manufacturer that was around pre-late 1990's.
      After that its just a matter of looking for a particular model that has a fairly close match in engine HP and cosmetic fit to your present one. Many of the newer engines are still based on the old engine designs with minor changes making a refit of old to new not that hard if your old style carb is even close in design to the new one.

    Have the same mower....but different problem. I have the problem of starting up and running for about 30 minutes, then "sputter, sputter, cough, cough" ( like fuel starved).....1/2 tank of fuel left in it.....dies.....starts right back up for about 3 minutes.....then does it again.......I have the shut-off.....replaced the fuel cap.....fuel filter( 3rd one this year)....oil is fine....new gas...new fuel line.... COULD THIS BE A SOLENOID PROBLEM?.....Sounds like it clicks when I turn the key....I am just about ready to give up on it....costs are adding up...with no apparent results......even the carb clean didn't seem to help....18 year old push mower works perfectly....but I have 3 acres of pasture land for a yard.....and I'm not getting any younger

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Joe Terry
      - Sounds like the " Fuel Solenoid " is getting weak or needs cleaning. When you turn on your mower, it uses the Energy from the Mower / Battery to stay open. Either Battery, Stator or Solenoid is weak. If I were you, I would " disable / cut " the Fuel Solenoid and go back to the " old " method and put on a " Shut Off Valve " like in the Video. This will prevent a lot of problems later and easier to make your diagnostic in case of other problems.

    • @joevogelberger9922
      @joevogelberger9922 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Joe Terry- you might have a bad fuel pump, or collapsed fuel line. Sometimes the hose instead of hardening when it gets old becomes mushy. Sometimes only on the inside.
      If it's collapsed down to a sliver (which even the minimal fuel pump suction will make worse), fuel flow to the carb will be inadequate and cause fuel starvation symptoms like you describe.

    • @joevignolor4u949
      @joevignolor4u949 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My mower was doing the exact same thing. I replaced the solenoid and the problem went away immediately and never came back. Apparently these solenoids can fail in such a way that causes them to shut off the fuel intermittently when the engine is warmed up even though they still have power being applied to them from the battery.

    • @jamess6734
      @jamess6734 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Says the guy who has no idea what he is talking about. The fuel shut off solenoid has nothing to do with your needle and seat. The fuel shut off solenoid strictly prevents back fire on shut down. Simple test is rotate ignition key to "on" and hear a click. Now if the tractor turned over but didn't start, yes I would inspect the fuel shut off solenoid to make sure it is not gummed up or disconnected(poor connection). Replace the needle and seat when your carb floods your sump. Briggs sells a needle and seat kit. Use compressed air to blow the old seat out. Simple cheap fix and no need for a added fuel valve. Local shops around here have been installing shut off valves and telling customers because they don't trust the solenoid. I question their managers who hired them as mechanics.

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamess6734 - Sorry James... But between a " Fuel Solenoid and Shut Off Valve ", I take the " Shut Off Valve " any day. As for " Fuel Solenoid ", they are " Selling " you the " Back Fire " lies or you misunderstood of how it was actually designed for. It's mainly designed to prevent Gas from enter / filling your Carburetor during long term storage in-case of " Float or O'Ring or Needle " failures. Most People would be too lazy or forget to " Shut Off Fuel Valve " during long-term / winter storage.

    • @jamess6734
      @jamess6734 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JodBronson it's not a lie. That's what it is designed to do. Prevent back fire when you turn the key off. It blocks the flow of fuel to the emulsion tube. It doesnt prevent leaking of anything. I have changed many carbs that have flooded the sumps with properly working solenoids. Needle and seat failures cause leaks and flooding. The vast majority of customers just shut their tractors down at full throttle which you shouldn't do but people will be people.
