Jose Javier Flores Yeah, well, fuel in Europe is MUCH more expensive than in the US (or pretty much anywhere else). Currently it's around 1.30€ per liter in most countries. Regarding last slow charging, it's nothing to do with power you supply, it's physics. At 90%, if maximum battery voltage is 4.3v, at this percentage, you are already reached 4.3V and you can't push more current, while when you have 3.5V, charger can push as much current as it can. I always charge on a normal 5w charger where charge time doesnt matter. IE overnight etc. But fast charging is great for when you forget to charge overnight or only got an hour between flights etc.
the 5v 4amp example was a bit of a poor choice, amp draw isn't dictated by the charger (other then perhaps a safety limit) it's dictated by the load, in this case the phone. If you hooked your phone to a 5v 100amp charger, it'd still only pull the current it's designed for (probably less then 2 amps) Typically when people are talking about fast charging, they are talking about higher voltage charging (yea i know, the phone steps it back down to a lower voltage to charge the single cell lithium battery, but that's not the point) The fast charger's are usually able to supply voltage higher then 5v, but won't do it unless the phone tells the charger it's ok to do so. The main benefit of using a higher charging voltage is that you don't need to use really thick cable's to charge your phone (wire size needed is dictated by amp draw, not voltage) Once your fast charging phone recieve's this higher voltage it step's it back down to around 5ish volts to charge the battery, but if it steps down from 10, or 20volts to 5, it can change the excess voltage into amps. That's what the watt's are all about, watts are used to describe how much total power a device uses. 20volts at 1 amp is 20 watts, so is 1volt at 20 amps. All sorts of electronics use this same technique to reduce wire size. Your CPU for instance probably runs on around 1.2 volts, but your power supply doesn't offer it 1.2v, it gives it 12v and there's little converter's directly beside the CPU that change the 12v supply into what your CPU needs (which is very high amperage, a 80wTDP chip is going to use around 60-70 amps) Because the high current only has to go from the converters to the CPU (which is right beside it) you don't need to use huge wires or giant pcb traces. Not only is this nice for packaging and looks reasons, it saves them a lot of money in reduced copper usage.
This would have been useful to know a week ago. I bought cheap wires for my quick charge LG G4, and the phone wouldn't even fully charge overnight. Had to buy cables that specifically say they do quick charging
i know tunnelbear, i only kept watching because i installed it a while ago - and i'd never think about a team feature. maybe you should hint at the USP at the start of the commercial part? And definitely keep up with the impro/silly endings ;-)
Me: What's fast charging? Apple user: It's this really cool, new and innovative technology that Apple invented that allows phones to charge at super fast speeds. Since it's so awesome, it costs $80 to be able to use. Android user: It's a way of charging your phone quickly that's been around for years.
@Techquickie can you explain the science/tech behind fast charging? It's well studied academically that most batteries, including the well-adapted Li-ion ones, fail a lot faster during faster charge-discharge cycles, or deeper cycles (e.g. from 100% to 0%) cycling it too fast also reduces capacity, and reduce energy conversion efficiency. So those fast charging we see on the market, do they use something like a supercap as a buffer? Charge supercap up quickly, then slowly charging up Li-ion from the supercap? Thanks.
If you have to ask, I dont have to tell you. But by any hoot, giving up the longevity of your battery for a faster charge. Its like peeing in your pants isnt it? Have you ever touched your phone after these high amps recharges, it feels hot dosent it? But not as my pants bro! Because its full of pee! Woof!
Olebull93 I don't remember which standard does it, VOOC or Dash or one of those besides Quick Charge, but they put most of the charging circuitry inside the wall wart instead of the phone for exactly that reason, to keep it from getting hot and increase longevity.
I was looking for some more in depth information on the charger and the phone. What does the phone communicate to the charger and visa versa. How does it decide when to charge with 9 volts and when to go back to 5 volt.
My phone uses bursts to quick charge. The phone will monitor temperature, the power delivery, communicate with the charger and for ten minutes crank up to 30W charge mode. Once the phone gets too warm or the power being pulled from was wall stutters, my phone tells the charger to hold back. I can go from 5% to 32% in 20 minutes. If My phone stays at a constant safe temperature, burst charge stays on for 15 minutes making the 5% to 32% charge take 14 minutes. In some situations where the temperature in the room is cooler, my phone burst charges to 60% in 25 minutes. Only downfall is that I need an expensive type c cable and 30w charger for my phone to quick charge. The plug alone is £36.99. The cable is £18.99.
I went from an iphone 5 to a lenovo P2 and the quickcharge is so freaking amazing, the phone charges fully in about 30 minutes, alas that being the same time it takes for my iphone 5 (roughly) but seeing as the battery is 3.15 times bigger in my lenovo p2 that's a huge improvement
My Dash charger says 4A but only delivers 3.5. Or I can use a dual 2.1A power suply socket to covert 4.2 int 3.5A so I agree with this statement, Despite all the haters saying otherwise, Likely they haven't actually tested and proven their power supplies like I have...
vinno97 It doesn't matter because the public transportation is good and reaches basically everywhere. There's also not nearly as much space for having a car, the roads are smaller, population is denser (making smog have a worse effect). You could live in a lot more places in Europe and never need to own a car than you could in the U.S. My other point was, Americans almost certainly buy gas more often than Europeans. So overall there's not much benefit for us. Many people would be happier taking a bus or subway or bike everywhere if possible, for FAR less money per month.
Marcus Coster - You assume everyone lives in a built up area with great public transport which simply isn't the case. It is more densely populated but this just creates more traffic congestion as public transport isn't that great and costs a lot. Most people still need/want a car. The only time public transport works really well is in city centers which is probably the same in america but it's still expensive. If you complain about fuel prices in america why do so many of you drive v8's and v6's. There are smaller cars available but you don't buy them so to complain about fuel prices while driving inefficient cars is pretty stupid. In Europe most own 1l to 2l 4 cylinder cars, even the larger 4x4's tend to have a 4 cylinder larger capacity engine. They're not slow either yet much more economical and can be just as large to transport things.
@Marcus Coster They were added to the dictionary due to years of missuge But things like meterage and kiloage aren't accepted terms when discribing length and weight. So why should the terms be accepted when it comes to electronics.
Vinxian1 Things are added to a dictionary when they are recognized as words. I'd say over a century of use is long enough to become a word. I don't live in a metric country but mileage is a word used often here, and poundage is also a word.

I love my dash charging. My batter will normally last 15-18 hours and so It's not always smart to charge before bed. I just plug it in before I get ready for the day and its good to go.
iFixit should have sponsored this video: "Quick charging is terrible for your battery, so get an iFixit kit to replace your battery after you have killed it."
My suggestion to everyone looking to keep their phone's battery healthy is to use quickcharge only when you absolutely need it. If you are charging over night just use an old charger (like a 500mA one) to charge your phone. The battery will stay cool and won't degrade over time, and by morning you will have a fully charged phone. Ideally you need to keep your battery between 20%-80%, but most important is to never let your battery empty completely
Batteries are designed to be charged to 100% each time I fully charge my Smartphone each night and it automatically cuts the current once charging is complete thus protecting the battery and I will unplug it the following morning when I get up and each morning my Smartphone and its battery is always nice and cool.
How come that while my OnePLus 3 dash charges, the battery temperature doesn't usually exceed 30C, although it's being hit with 3.4A (data according to "Ampere" app)?
Vinxian1 sure, but according to the video, the battery itself produces the heat (being a chemist, I can say this makes sense) and not the circuitry around it...
I have to say that I'm suprised it only reaches 30C, even without the the power circuitry. But the circuitry is responsible for a lot of the heat, the circuitry is not 100% efficient. Therefore it dissipates power. And that in turn generates heat. especially since the circuitry is in a closed environment
Vinxian1 that's true, but really, I thought the battery alone was responsible for the majority of the heat output. 30C is when it's not used while charging though. It's a little hotter when being used at the same time, but still miles aways from an iPhone or whatever
Hence why I love my OP3T, all round brilliant phone except the camera for a good price and it beasts every other phone charging wise. Also, you can get an "VOOC" charger block which can usually be found for cheaper and is the same technology in Dash Charge (VOOC is created by OPPO who also own 1+)
because the heat production follows P=I^2*R (power= current squared times resistance). If the internal resistance of the battery is lower, it will output less heat at the same current.
First time I've experienced fast charging was when I recently got myself an S6 (since they're cheap now). And holy fuck I love it. I can plug it in at 25%, and after half an hour it's around 80. Can't imagine living without it anymore .-. I use my wireless charging when I don't need my phone for a couple hours, but plug it in if I'm in a rush.
everything we learned in the old days of taking care of batteries is obsolete now.. its actually better for modern batteries to have many small charges instead of completely draining and charging them
I charge my Smartphone Battery to 100% every night as I am a heavy TH-cam user Even with doing that I still get up to 6 years usage from the phone and battery and I ONLY replace my Smartphone with a new one once every 6 years
hey jo(h)n, perhaps a techquickie video about gamma and/or brightness? both hardware (so on your monitor and tv settings) and software (like in games and/or image/video editing software). thanks
The "charger" is in fact not even a charger per say, it is simply a USB power supply, the actual real battery charger is on the PCB inside the phone, ipad or laptop etc, However there are handshakes between the device and power supply in newer USB specifications that goes along the lines of "hey phone, USB power supply here - I'm only capable of delivering 1Amps @ 5 volts, so please don't go over over this as I might have to shutdown or I will become unstable and hot - the charger said" - so the phone listens to this basic coms designed into the USB power supply and limits its charge rate (current) into the Li-Ion / LiPo cell so as to not draw too much from the external supply. Have a read of this that lays out how the specification evolved from the first USB ports: www.maximintegrated.com/en/app-notes/index.mvp/id/4803
Li-Ion and Li-Po expand over there life from over temperature extremes as well as being held at fully charged or too low for too long, this is why on a design point of view, you should NEVER use a phone case that has the battery backup built in as this applies permanent power to the charger input of the device, if there is always 5 volts present the battery is never allowed to discharge (some moden battery management can allow charging to completely halt). Something to keep in mind is when a traditional charger for Li-Ion or LiPo gets the battery to 100% (4.20volts) basic physics steps in, the battery doesn't need the current, but the charger keeps going it pretty much just burns up that current as heat in the battery instead - further damaging it.
Actually modern Smartphone chargers cut the current entirely once the charging is done and won't allow anymore current to come through thus the Battery will be entirely protected

The fast charger's are usually able to supply voltage higher then 5v, but won't do it unless the phone tells the charger it's ok to do so.
One time I just fell asleep while watching TH-cam and found my phone just dead on the floor
This would have been useful to know a week ago. I bought cheap wires for my quick charge LG G4, and the phone wouldn't even fully charge overnight. Had to buy cables that specifically say they do quick charging
Just before clicking the video, I had low battery warning
PypeR well isn't that a coincidence
Before the video, I got an ad about Oppo's fast charging.
That Nexus 6P repair guide hit me right where it hurts. The damn thing shuts off between 20% and 40% battery unless I baby it.
That occuring at 20 to 40% means when it happens it will often indicate that the battery is bad or faulty
lets face it: your videos are just absolutely enjoyable. No doubt about it!
i know tunnelbear, i only kept watching because i installed it a while ago - and i'd never think about a team feature.
maybe you should hint at the USP at the start of the commercial part?
And definitely keep up with the impro/silly endings ;-)
Samsung: Mate we can handle fast charging, how about 100w?
Galaxy Note 7: f.
Good presentation
Tunnel bear is so popular that it's even used in westeros 3:42 😂😂.....screw them damn ravens!!
Me: What's fast charging?
Apple user: It's this really cool, new and innovative technology that Apple invented that allows phones to charge at super fast speeds. Since it's so awesome, it costs $80 to be able to use.
Android user: It's a way of charging your phone quickly that's been around for years.
I just buy a new phone when the battery dies
Buying a replacement battery would be A LOT cheaper
Simon Tay you don't say
You, my friend, are irony challenged :D
GottemLeaning gift me one
Funny because phone don't come pre-charged
@Techquickie can you explain the science/tech behind fast charging? It's well studied academically that most batteries, including the well-adapted Li-ion ones, fail a lot faster during faster charge-discharge cycles, or deeper cycles (e.g. from 100% to 0%) cycling it too fast also reduces capacity, and reduce energy conversion efficiency. So those fast charging we see on the market, do they use something like a supercap as a buffer? Charge supercap up quickly, then slowly charging up Li-ion from the supercap? Thanks.
Burn the candle in both ends. Its the only way to fly man.
In what way was this relevant?
If you have to ask, I dont have to tell you.
But by any hoot, giving up the longevity of your battery for a faster charge. Its like peeing in your pants isnt it? Have you ever touched your phone after these high amps recharges, it feels hot dosent it? But not as my pants bro! Because its full of pee! Woof!
Olebull93 I don't remember which standard does it, VOOC or Dash or one of those besides Quick Charge, but they put most of the charging circuitry inside the wall wart instead of the phone for exactly that reason, to keep it from getting hot and increase longevity.
We are throwing this one back in the bin.
Peace!
A year later and I still have no idea what is wrong with you
Now there's a face I haven't seen behind a video in a while, welcome back!
With more power, comes more heat -Techquickie 2k17
I was looking for some more in depth information on the charger and the phone. What does the phone communicate to the charger and visa versa. How does it decide when to charge with 9 volts and when to go back to 5 volt.
Could you do what if Luke Skywalker felled to the Darkside?
Who's watching this while charging their phone with a fast charger?
Finally! Luke! First time in the last month....
Luke videos are the best videos.
JT&T he is usually a clickbait shit
Forgot to charge your phone and have to leave in 30 minutes? Plug it in and leave. Problem solved.
Plug it in, leave it till you come back and take something else for entertainment reasons
+Regenbogenkotze
Thats what i do and just communicate with smoke signals when im out in the city without my phone.
Dash charge actually use about 3.5A, not 4A
Arek R. My dash charger says 4A.
4A
So 87.5% of the power of what he said. Thanks for that, lonelyboy...
Also noticed no extra heat with dash charge compared to fast charge
My Dash charger says 4A but only delivers 3.5. Or I can use a dual 2.1A power suply socket to covert 4.2 int 3.5A so I agree with this statement, Despite all the haters saying otherwise, Likely they haven't actually tested and proven their power supplies like I have...
Luke is awesome! Love this guy!
I love how americans complain about paying 50 dollars to gas
Kirina Yuuki Cars are necessary in most of the country so yeah, we are allowed to be upset when prices get high.
Marcus Coster he means that it is very cheap when compared to, for example, most of Europe
vinno97 It doesn't matter because the public transportation is good and reaches basically everywhere.
Every country should take notes from finnish public transportation
Ok ok its just the card you use to travel
When he said "with higher power, comes higher heat" I would loved if the editor used uncle Ben talking to Peter.
No: Voltage, Amperage, Wattage
Yes: Electrical tension (silly English speaking people), Current, Power
Bjorn Roesbeke Current and amperage are the same thing, wattage is voltage*amperage, and power is not a unit of measurement.
Sure, i know what people meant to say but there are no such terms as something-age.
You're mixing up things. (NL: grootheden en eenheden)
Bjorn Roesbeke Voltage, amperage, and wattage are all in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
@Marcus Coster
They were added to the dictionary due to years of missuge
But things like meterage and kiloage aren't accepted terms when discribing length and weight.
So why should the terms be accepted when it comes to electronics.
Vinxian1 Things are added to a dictionary when they are recognized as words. I'd say over a century of use is long enough to become a word. I don't live in a metric country but mileage is a word used often here, and poundage is also a word.
In addition to fast charging in the smartphone, Snowwolf not only applies fast charging technology to the E-cigarette field but also launched the world's first supercharged E-cigarette device. The 5000mAh built-in battery can be fully charged in 35 minutes.
3X FASTER THAN NORMAL CHARGE⠀
MAX: 10V, 4.5A, 45W
Amperage? Does he not mean current?
This is the only person i saw in the entire youtube till now who said'if you like it then like it and if you DISLIKE IT THEN DISLIKE IT'. Your gettin a like from me
#OnePlusMasterRace
It would be cool If you guys did a video about technology and logistics, like package delivery.
current. the word is current. not amperage. current.
i'll allow voltage (emf would be better), but amperage just sounds stupid.
"with higher power comes higher responsibility" - 1:30
iOS peasants still don't have fast charging lmfao while android have it for like a decade.
Waleed EL Mhamal Android hasn't even been around that long m8
Adel Alqadi That means it's impressive
Clark Narvas I agree, but that's not my point lol
We do have FastCharging.
How would you know? Have you seen the source code and/or the schematic for the circuit board that shows how the charging system works.
1:33 that battery looks edible
Riddle me this batman.. explain why my Samsung wireless fast charger doesn't fast charge as fast as the cord.
asap bruhhh Wireless is way less efficient than wired. It's not supposed to be as fast as the cord, just fast compared to other wireless chargers.
I love my dash charging. My batter will normally last 15-18 hours and so It's not always smart to charge before bed. I just plug it in before I get ready for the day and its good to go.
RIP | Apple |
iFixit should have sponsored this video: "Quick charging is terrible for your battery, so get an iFixit kit to replace your battery after you have killed it."
Ideally you need to keep your battery between 20%-80%, but most important is to never let your battery empty completely
good spot, thank you! corrected it
Batteries are designed to be charged to 100% each time
I fully charge my Smartphone each night and it automatically cuts the current once charging is complete thus protecting the battery and I will unplug it the following morning when I get up and each morning my Smartphone and its battery is always nice and cool.
1:30 with higher power comes higher responsibility
Haha fast charging... Did someone say Apple?
No. No one did. Someone said Samsung tho
Vodeine my samsung A5 '16 has fast charging and I love it ^^
Apple has fast charging. But the cost for the shit is like $99999
PissedOffHoneyBadger one day
My laptop has a fast charge USB slot and it works on my iPhone
I could listen to Luke talk about anything all day, what a beautiful chocolate man.
Wait what's that?...
My samsung only came wiht fast charge, what do i do?
Dex Wusky throw it out get a new one
Rhiannon thanks
Modern day tips
Serious answer:
You can disable fast charge in settings, although I'd never do that.
GoldenSun3DS why is that?
Did you just forget to mention that FastCharge etc can change the voltage up to 12V* so that the cable sees less current?
Who plays cs go in a quad screen setup?
Dafuq
everything we learned in the old days of taking care of batteries is obsolete now.. its actually better for modern batteries to have many small charges instead of completely draining and charging them
I charge my Smartphone Battery to 100% every night as I am a heavy TH-cam user
Even with doing that I still get up to 6 years usage from the phone and battery and I ONLY replace my Smartphone with a new one once every 6 years
Boonk gang whole lotta gang shi na'm sayin
hey jo(h)n, perhaps a techquickie video about gamma and/or brightness? both hardware (so on your monitor and tv settings) and software (like in games and/or image/video editing software). thanks
Charge iPhone with iPad charger. Done.
I thought this was going to be about electric cars... you should do a video about electric cars... or a series about them!
Thnx to qualcomm not 🍏💩
Aks Karim no one is thanking Apple
Ask karim
