My philosophy has always been to build the most cage you can afford..you may be running elevens in the car today, but down the road you might want to raise your aspirations and lower your bank balance...er, lower your ET. It's a lot easier to build "too much" cage while the car is a blank slate than it is to add "just enough" after it's been completed..besides, a full cage adds substantial stiffness to the chassis...and is there really such a thing as "too much" cage when the unthinkable happens and you find yourself barrel rolling down a retaining wall? 😯
Great video! I'm sure somebody will ask about bolt-in vs weld-in. I've seen bolt-in units that were NHRA legal for 10.0, but not for 8.5 or faster. Not that you would want a bolt-in 8.5 cage...
I have a convertible not able to do under 14s yet but plan on eventually. I know 13.49 is where you have to start using a roll cage but which type do you need ? I see 4 point 6 8 10 but I can't find which you need.
I currently run 8.0 index...in the 8th lol. I put in a cage (jegster 8) because my girlfriend swears were doing 190 leaving the grocery store and I paid 260 for the cage, SHE then bought me 1200$ belts because I "needed" them. She feels safe, and ill be set in the future if my s10 ever gets the 6.2 in my shed (currently still inside my totalled vette). But ONE DAY..and in the meantime, everyone leaves my little stroker alone and I look ridiculous..I'm OK with it
I just race for fun on open track days/test days. The 11.5 et is coming up and I’m considering getting the truck cert for 10.0. Now I looked through the rule book and it seems there’s quite a bit I need to do. if I’m just “practicing” at the track do I really need all the safety stuff or would just a cage be enough?
I’m wondering why NHRA hasn’t allowed a containment seat to be used in place of a funny car cage. I feel that the containment seat will probably the same safety as a funny car cage when going down the track but also be safer for the driver and passenger when driving the car on a public road
just a reminder 2014 and newer are allowed to run up to 9.00 or 150mph with out a roll cage , and the 2008-2013 can run up to 10.00 or 135mph with out one
@@Calvin-Nelson I suppose so, but like, an FIA spec rally cage is way more intensive than an NHRA 8.50 cage... Just kinda seems negligent or something IDK, especially with how much more involved even the 7.50 cage gets. But hell, what do I know, really.
new generation of motortrend and hotrod here, all killer no filler
Very informative indeed.
I am very glad you weighed everything that is great information I've never seen before
Every time I watch you guys I get a little smarter! Thanks!
The NHRA should pay you guys for this video and include it somewhere. Best I've seen so far.
Yeah. You have to pay them for a lot of the information, so they aren't really in the position to be paying out I would guess.
that cage saved your dads life!!!!!!
Love the attention to detail you put into everything. Baffles me how you guys complete these projects so quickly
Thanks. It takes a lot of time. It's a grind!
Excellent video as always! Thanks for sharing the weight difference between the various certs 👍
No problem!
I love this channel! Thank you for coming this!!!
Covering!!!
I really want to see more of that Volvo. As I mentioned when you found it to give it a new purpose. Yes, this is exactly what I meant!
Great video as usual. Chock full of useful information! That Volvo is going to be one hell of a cool car!
Great information as always
Good information, thanks
Great video as always
Damn. This is some great information.
Thanks!
@@Calvin-Nelson Here I am watching it again bud. Anytime I need roll cage info, I come here. Great stuff.

Yeah. Bolt in is usually a no go.
good Information, thank you!
Nice job, this video may save a life.

Yeah. We did a whole build series on it. It was a nightmare. Lol

Yes. Forgot about that
Is that only nhra sanctioned tracks or everywhere?
@@austinsarver2413 I believe it's only NHRA, but IHRA might have it too.

Interesting how seemingly little in comparison they require for a car going just a second slower.
It's a quadratic scale. 1/2mv^2

It's LS and vortech swap just throw a turbo at it central in this guy's garage.
Short answer is... go where there's some semblance of liberty, and no, you don't need anything you don't want!!

Race on the street. Discussion over. I frickin HATE door bars.

I hope you never wreck whatever car you’re racing. Would hate to lose a member of the racing community
I daily my 10 second car and don't want to danger of a cage.
