- Hi my fellow demigods!! Okay so we’re doing this, it’s time to watch the first Percy Jackson movie after reading the books for the first time earlier this year 🔱 This movie was UHHH something! Thank you to everyone who warned me that it wasn’t going to be entirely book accurate, I’m sorry I didn’t heed your warnings but also not sorry because this was quite the experience. Hopefully the Percy Jackson show will do the books more justice, but for now I’m just going to appreciate Logan Lerman and ignore everything else! Let me know your thoughts on the movie in the comments, I’m curious to hear if people liked it!

(August eighteenth) if you count the timeline from the first book being set in the year it was released, the whole showdown with Luke and annabeth and percy and kronos and the knife and all that happened on the day I was born! It's super wierd to think about but I love it.
The only good thing about the Percy Jackson movies is seeing Rick Riordan roast them.

Watching Uncle Rick hate on the Peter Johnson movies with a burning passion is one of my absolute favourite things.
One thing I don’t hear a lot of people mention is how inaccurate the lighting bolt was. That thing was supposed to have the power equivalent to a nuke but in the movie Luke using it to fight Percy looked like Electro fighting Spider-Man.
Yeah that was kind of pathetic. The lightning bolt itself looked cool though.
Not only equivalent. It was supposed to be powerful enough to make nukes look like fireworks.
Yeah that thing should have leveled half the country.
Imagine having a weapon so powerful that someone who owns nukes looks like a child playing pretend and then you lose, because your OP weapon got wet...

I will forever be greatful to the movie for introducing me to the books. That being said, it astounds me how far off both movies are 😂 And Uncle Rick's lenghthy e-mail is iconic, pure poetry.

Trust me,when I first read the books I was trying to find a new series to read and I got so many suggestions to read Percy Jackson then I saw that the books had movies and I was like people say the books are WAY better then the adaptations of any movie or series so I read all of the books first and then i thought about the movies and I was really really excited so I got my mom and we watched the movie together and the entire time I was complaining and I was angry and annoyed and I couldn’t even stand to watch it but I powered through thinking that it might get better but it got worse man.For unlucky me I watch the entire first movie and I was complaining to my mom about it and then complained to my friends about it and suggested to NEVER watch the movies.I really tried to separate the movies from the books but couldn’t I was really hyped about those movies and got completely disappointed when I watch the first one.Cause I LOVE Percy Jackson and it hurts my heart that the movies take away the meaning of the books.Im not complaining about the actors because they were doing what they were supposed to do I’m complaining about the material that the script writers and the directors decided to do.Sorry that I got on a rant

The difference between the Harry Potter movies and the Percy Jackson movies is with Harry Potter JK Rowling was involved from beginning to end, where they cut out Rick Riordan for Percy Jackson, he even volunteered to help them to make sure it turned out right and they turned him down
I heard this actually happens pretty often when books (or similar stuff) are adapted. The directors and boards already don't value script writers a lot and they tend to look down on authors just the same or sometimes even worse. Which is so stupid, because if the author hadn't written a great book and wasn't a good story teller they wouldn't even have anything to adapt.
I'm so glad the series has the author Rick Riordan completely involved

This is not Percy Jackson. This is Peter Johnson's movie and we deny its existence and there is no real adaptation (unless you count the Lightning Thief Musical, bc that's a GREAT adaptation!)

Several songs manage to be what the kids call ‘bangers’.
One person also asked uncle Rick why there was a scene of the movie missing on Disney+ and his answer was something along the line of "Must be a mistake, the entire movie should be a black screen without dialogue."

However, I am writing a screenplay for a possible new movie, taking the best from the movies, books, and series, and asking friends and ChatGPT for advice. Don’t put yourself through the pain of the second movie, I thought it was getting better at first but then they basically added some of the 5th book into it, it was just… wow 😳
I never actually watched any of the movies (I've only read the books) but I've seen a bunch of clips so when I saw the scene where Kronos supposedly comes back I was so confused because I didn't remember when Percy fought a weird lava giant in the second book.
Yeah they briefly jump to the end of the fifth book then hop back in time to get the ending of the second book and for the love of god where was blackjack!!
The only good thing about the 2nd movie is Luke's what are you doing on my roof? line
I watched the movies before I read the books ( my dad made me ) and I thought they were fine even after reading the book bc I forgot most of it then watched it with my friend and OH MY GODS what the hades was that absolute piece of Octavian ( shit )
Luke scared me because before I considered reading the books, my friend told me that Luke was a jerk, and then I read the book and Luke was charming and nice and gave Percy the older brother that he needed. So I was scared at the end because the entire book, I was waiting for the other flying shoe to drop. Also the movie made me want to yank out all my hair in just the first 10 minutes!
That’s one of the reasons I really like Luke, cause it is incredibly true to real life. Plenty of terrible people are charming and nice at first, but then they have hidden motives or a nasty side to their personality they don’t show you till way later.
Him being so nice, and then betraying Percy, felt so real.

@@isaacbrown7936 I agree. Luke really feels like a big brother kind of guy, helping Percy find his footing. It’s great. I also personally really like Clarrise, her actress does a great job. And as a hole, I have minor nit picks, but this show does things right, way more then wrong, especially if you also compare it to the movies. It even has changes I really like, like Eddie not being friends with Gabe in this version. But that might just be because I like the line: “I’m the one going out, you’re going in. I should apologize to you.”
I’m optimistic about this, and looking forward to the next episode.
If you think this is bad, wait till you see the Sea of Monsters movie. That movie caused me and my sister physical pain beyond what even this movie could do.
God(s), the fact that they brought Kronos back to life at the end for a “cool” climax, WHEN THE BOOK ALREADY HAD A EXCELLENT CLIMAX, pisses me off non-stop.

The one thing that I hated the most about the movie was how they showed Luke. The betrayal of Luke at the end of the first book is supposed to be a surprise and heart-wrenching, but in the movie you can see it coming a mile away.

This is gonna be a weird Origin story. But I watched the movie before I read the books. I thought it seemed really cool because I loved greek mythology and I liked the action. But when I found out it was based on a book series I was elated and rushed to read them. I was absolutely FLOORED. I loved them so much that I completely forgot about the movie until my friend brought it up how much the fandom hated it
This was me too. I watched the first movie first and years later found out it was a book. I then read the books and heard of the second movie and watched it (I didn't remember much of the first one) and well... I was at home yelling at the phone "THAT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENS ON THE SECOND BOOK!!"
absolute same. I was only 4 when the book came out so obviously I wasn’t reading it, but I was 9 when they made the first movie and it was my introduction to the world. I didn’t get around to reading the books till I was 12 (I could barely read until I was 9/10 due to disabilities so my ability to read the books until I was a stronger reader was very hindered) and I was flabbergasted. I remember ranting so hard and long to my friends and family (the autism kicked in hard over the differences between the two) and I’ve never been able to enjoy the movies since.

This was the exact way that I discovered Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series. I watched the movie and loved the concept, found out that my brother had the first three books, devoured them and then everything else she's written, and then my best friend randomly watched the movie last year and I was reeling because I forgot it existed.
Uncle Rick had me, I didn't know he would go off like that, I really felt he was this wholesome Dad who just wrote this for his son, but jeez when someone goes over his project like that I guess he's gonna roast the shit outta that stuff
as a prospective author trying to write a fantasy series, if some movie studio butchered my project as much as they butchered percy jackson in these movies, i’d be just as furious lmao

For the longest time, I’ve always been recommended Percy Jackson videos on youtube. I don’t know why but I never cared for it much even though I love Greek mythology. Logan Lerman is a gem. I wish he could play Poseidon for the new adaptation... It would be so coool. I watched the movie first, then dive into the books. And i was like ?????? it's completely different! How did they even green lighted that in the first place is beyond me.
The 2nd movie is kinda amazing with how bad it is. They tried to fix some of the mistakes the 1st one made (albeit in really questionable ways), but somehow made it even more off the rails.
JUST FINISHED THE TWO EPISODES THAT ARE OUT AND OH MY GODS EVERYONE WHO HASNT WATCHED THEM GO WATCH THEM RIGHT NOW. THEYRE ALMOST NOT REAL ITS SO GOOD.
Imagine watching this premiere in a room full of the most avid fans of the book back in the day. I lived that. I cannot describe to this day how I felt watching it.

Fun Fact: In one of the Emails to the studios he released, Uncle Rick said he liked the beginning (he is a cinnamon bun and just has to find something positive).
Some other things too (like the placement of the Gate to Hades and Anabeths indtroduction) But then he just rips into the movie.

I think that the beginning up to the point of Percy getting to the camp is sorta alright, if we exclude the gods bit from it (it's a movie, we don't have as much time)
But then it goes off the rails with a speed of light and never comes back

I'm an adult reading the series for the first time and honestly even without the nostalgic attachment these movies broke my brain. I think what broke me the most was the moment in the second film when they enter the Sea of Monsters and Percy's _water_ powers inexplicably stop working because they couldn't come up with any other way to create dramatic tension lmao
Would you mind telling me if it's still enjoyable reading the books? Because I also have never read them, but they sound interesting and fun, but I fear that reading about the adventures of 12y/os as an adult would annoy me

The differences in the adoptions of Lord of the rings and Percy Jackson
Lotr: We got rid of the weird long time skips and some superfluous scenes like meeting God in the woods and him doing nothing to help or really caring and all the loooong description of Trees
PJ: We got rid of most of the plot and basically all of the characters' personalities and character arcs.. Buuuut we also changed the few things we kept to be almost unrecognizable
And the super-powerful elf-warrior who needed to be switched out with a character who is actually important,Glorfindel would raise too many questions"Why isn't he in the Fellowship?"In the books Arwen is an afterthought,ppl who insist she couldn't fight Nazgul,forget she is a child of Elrond,who's arguably greater than Glorfindel in different ways,so she'd carry great blood power. Maybe she shouldn't have carried a sword,she could have been similair to Galadriel's sublte magic.

I wouldn't go so far to day it's sooooo good, but I saw it before I read the books and I can't deny that I liked it enough to see it more than once, buy the books and fall in love with Logan Lerman's Percy Jackson. But also I was a teenager when I saw and not a kid. I can see how the movie audience is completely different from the books'.

When I finally saw the movie, on the other hand, my response was to go back to the book to compare-contrast, leading to me becoming hooked and reborn as a fanboy. On topic of good adaptations and Harry Potter - Rowling's new book series gets probably the best adaptation I've ever seen, but nobody discusses it 😅. They went for mini-series approach, so if the book needs 2 hours it's 2 episodes, if it needs 4 - they go for 4. And 5 seasons already they just make Strike and Robin better and better and better. 💚*why can't they all do that*

I actually agree, and this is coming from someone who’s a huge fan of the books! There’s a decent story, and the cast is really not that bad. It’s just not a Percy Jackson adaptation at all.

I have read the books (loved them) and seen the movies and the movies are for some reason two of my favorite movies ever. I also think that the fact they look older in the movies are super nice. Its the one thing i dont like about the books. Like there's no way a 12yr old did that stuff in the book but in the movies even tho they are supposed to be that age they atleast look 16-17 which fits more.

I just subscribed just so I don’t have to go back to this channel to see if you upload or not. I’m assuming it’s weekly uploads. Anyways, I honestly wouldn’t mind 1-4 hours of just book review. You’re funny to watch! Also, second movie made me angry they even attempted to try connecting to the book. The sea of monsters movie was a monster itself.

I love the Lord of the Rings movies! I do think they are a good adaptation and that it keeps the spirit. But I would’ve love certain scenes in the movies that didn’t get added. Same as the Percy Jackson show there are a few scenes that I was disappointed that wasn’t in them. But that is what comes with adaptations nothing is going to be perfect with them. Plus I always have the books to go back to and I have my ✨ imagination ✨ and fan-art/fan-videos of to see scenes and moments I wanted to see.

I hadn't read the books when I watched the first movie, but I liked it *gasp*, and that prompted me to read the book, I've pretty much read all of Uncle Rick's books since then

Edit: can we bring attention to the fact that even the movie on its own doesn't make sense? Like, if there is rule that the Gods can't interact with their children... why is Luke so angry? It isn't Hermes' fault! He says "oh yeah the gods don't care about us" but when have they ever shown they do not care about their kids? The musical was so much better....
The second movie is even more terrible. It craps on the entire climax of the 5 books instead of just the one it was 'supposedly' adapting. You should watch it 😈 even if only to share the trauma and truly understand why we were so scared for the new adaptation!
