Before we can dive into the Disney+ series, Micah & I must first endure the original movies based on the Percy Jackson book series. Join us on this young adult adventure as we encounter Greek gods such as Zeus, Poseidon, and David in this vaguely enjoyable attempt to repeat the success of Harry Potter!
Plot (via Wiki):
In The Lightning Thief, Zeus accuses Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), the demigod son of Poseidon, of stealing his master lightning bolt. Percy, initially unaware of his identity, must return the bolt to Mount Olympus within two weeks to avoid war among the gods. Percy, a 16-year-old with dyslexia and ADHD, is attacked by a Fury disguised as his teacher and embarks on a journey to Camp Half-Blood, a hidden camp for demigods. Alongside his protector Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) and fellow demigod Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), Percy discovers his powers, heritage, and embarks on a quest to the Underworld to rescue his abducted mother.
Percy, armed with a magical sword and aided by allies, decapitates Medusa, retrieves pearls from various locations, and races against time to prevent a war among the gods. In the Underworld, Percy confronts Hades, who reveals that Luke, a fellow demigod, was the true thief. A battle ensues, and Percy ultimately defeats Luke, returns the lightning bolt to Zeus, and reconciles with his father Poseidon. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover continue their training at Camp Half-Blood after averting the impending conflict among the gods.
In Sea of Monsters, Percy Jackson, supported by his friends Annabeth and Grover, faces challenges at Camp Half-Blood. Thalia, sacrificed and turned into a protective tree, is poisoned by Luke, threatening the camp's safety. A prophecy suggests Percy may save or destroy Olympus. Annabeth and Grover propose a quest for the Golden Fleece to heal Thalia's tree. Despite Mr. D choosing Clarisse for the quest, Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson embark on their own. They learn of Luke's plan to revive Kronos and destroy Olympus using the Fleece.
After a series of challenges, including facing Charybdis and rescuing Grover from Polyphemus's lair, Percy confronts Luke. In a battle, Tyson saves Percy, revealing his status as Poseidon's son. Kronos is defeated, with Luke consumed, and Annabeth dies but is resurrected by the Fleece. Clarisse places the Fleece on Thalia's tree, reviving Thalia and preserving the camp's safety. Percy realizes Thalia, a child of Zeus, may be the one referred to in the Olympus prophecy.

Fun fact; the author of the books hated the movie so much that he posted the letter that he sent to the studios on his blog. He begged the studio to fix the script, even offering to rewrite the entire thing himself for free. He basically had no involvement with the movies which is why he's on of the main producers on the new show
that is rough
Funny that the show is even worse than the movies lol
@@drstrangelove307Bold, comically wrong take.
@@MolemanSAno, strange is correct. The series is not even funny bad it’s just horrible. That fight against ares lmfao just no.
Awful tv series dude lol@MolemanSA
Imagine if in the Harry Potter movies, they make Hogwarts a college so they could age up the kids. Hermione is described as the smartest girl in the school but she never does anything to show that. They make Ron into some confident ladies man with bad jokes. They don’t have Snape or Draco in the first movie. Quarrell is actually working by himself and Voldemort isn’t even mentioned in the film. They take a small plot point of the first book and decide to revolve the whole movie around it.
In the sequel, they try to shoe horn in Draco and Snape like they have always been here. Same thing with Voldemort. Voldemort comes back during the second movie and instead of the special power Harry has being the love he has for his friends, he instead has a very special wand that can kill Voldemort. Why? No reason. It just can. Harry kills Voldemort, in the second movie, and the movie ends with sequel bait like there are any stakes left. Harry already beat Voldemort. Very easily too.
That’s basically what the Percy Jackson movies are
This is so hilarous. LMFAOOO
Yeah that about sums it up. If you know nothing about the books, the first movie is passable, but the second one really just goes so off the rails it’s not enjoyable for anyone
DUDEE you framed it perfectly
Thank God that didn't happen.
Beautifully accurate comparison 😂😂😂

I have a confession. This movie came out when I was in middle school and we were learning about Greek Myths at this time. I had ZERO idea about the books (I read them later thus being why I regret my actions) but I thought Logan Lerman was hot so I convinced my teachers to take the whole seventh grade class to see this movie. I apologize to NO ONE I HATE ALL OF YOU!!! Great commentary track!
😭😭😭
Logan ate but I think we can all agree on that. However, Walker kinda cooked him cuz that kid be saying a million words with his eyes alone. It’s insane
I love Logan as Percy!!! He just needed to be like… much younger 😂😅
Any of the kids who actually read the books were probably melting in their seat
So its not touched on in the movie at all but the reason the big 3 "Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades" can't have any more kids is because last time they did WWII happened. Hades' sons were all the Axis powers leaders and Zeus' and Poseidon's were the Allied leaders. This is 100% something that is said in the Books.
Oh… unfortunate choice in partners. O-0
That's fucking wild
@@mechanomics2649 it gets more wild cause it wasn't even Hades that was their father, well it was. But he was in his Pluto the Roman god of death form at the time and Pluto is described as looking a lot like Hitler, by a character.
@@wil2560nah Hades's first description in the LT likened him to Hitler (but also Napoleon so it was a little less specific)
@@ianbrudnakvoss3126 that's Hades though. I'm pretty sure in Son of Neptune in the Heroes of Olympus series when he's Pluto he's likened to Hitler. Just double checked it was on Son of Neptune, and it's Hazel who says Pluto looks similar to Hitler. However it seems Rick Riordan has now said Hitler is in no certain terms a Demigod. So just a coincidence it seems.
why does hollywood keep giving these things to directors that refuse to read the source material? Like what's that about?
Worst part is, Rick (the author) was never included in the entirety of the process of both movies. He hates these movies and doesn’t like to acknowledge them.

"the mist" is a thing in the books but it is NOT a bottle of perfume 😭 if i remember correctly it's just sort of a thing that happens automatically to explain why mortals can't see all the magic shit going on, it's almost exactly the same mechanic as the one in Harry Potter. They also crammed the final 4 books into the second movie, which is partially why it's so much worse than the first but they also just completely phoned it in.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Alexandra Daddario does her best acting while playing completely unhinged and violent women, because her eyes really do sell that.
This role? Not well suited. At all. A very bad casting call tbh.
Its because in the first movie they gave her clarris personality she is Annabeth in name only then they back tracked in the second movie gave her the blonde hair and Annabeths wisdom sort of
I truly think she's too pretty in the role. If Annabeth really looked like that she'd get a different type of attention from people, but in the books she kind of commands a room with her intellect and authoritativeness
but she's pretty!
Not to mention they look like siblings in tlt 💀
@@ot7biasedmashupsYeah this is my biggest problem, it's the way they both have the same shade of hair and the same shade of blue eyes and the same exact heavy eyebrows

The first movie is decent (not if you’re a book fan but if you’re just going in blind). The second one however… was a movie that everyone unfortunately watched 😂😂
The John Mulaney impression took me so off guard holy shit LOL
I was drinking something and so nearly spit it out at that scene 😂
I love when Chiron is explaining the big 3 in the museum and for Zeus and Poseidon the camera pans to sculptures of them but for Hades there's just a small painting on a pot. Poor dolt
That honestly feels so fitting given his character in the books
As a long time book fan, the most frustrating part about the TERRIBLE second movie is that they fucked up and skipped so many scenes, important moments and characters in the FIRST MOVIE and tried to force in the “correct” changes. Spoilers ahead!!
Spoilers coming now:
-Clarisse is a major character that should’ve been in the first movie but they decided to take her character completely out and blend it with Annabeth which is why she was kinda extra bitchy. The second book NEEDS Clarisse and she becomes a main character in it.
-Tyson and Percy are supposed to be half brothers but Tyson is half monster and half god (these types of monsters have their own category). That’s why everyone was treating him weirdly in the beginning and throughout the movie.
-Tyson and Percy’s brotherly bond is explored in the book and actually so IMPORTANT in later books but the movie butchered that.
-Ares the god of War is a main antagonist in the first movie and causes problems for Percy. Which is explored more in the second book because Clarisse is the DAUGHTER of ARES.
-THE MIST ISN’T A DAMN SPRAY BOTTLE AND THE WRITERS FOR THE MOVIE MADE IT STUPID!! The mist is a supernatural force controlled by the goddess Hecate that twists a mortal's sight from seeing monsters, gods, Titans, and other supernatural occurrences by replacing them with things the mortal mind knows about and can comprehend. (Riordan Wiki)
Those are the main issues that come to mind for the second movie. That makes it so unbearable to watch. I could forgive the first movie as a mistake but for them to make the second movie with the intention to continue the series had me seeing red as a teenager. The tv series is already a bajillion times better and I haven’t finished it yet.
You're gonna have to remind me what Tyson did after the 2nd book, cause I swear he was useless
@@Fluffy6555 I wouldn’t say he’s useless but his role is minor in the third and fourth book. I know in the third book there’s drama with him being at camp because he’s half monster and that causes tension within the camp. That is the easiest way I can explain that without ruining it for new people lol.
In the fourth book I believe he still has a smaller role but he does help with the quest in a big way. And then it’s all hands on deck for the fifth book lol. Everybody and they mama’s were being brought out for that wonderful book. (If you get what I mean with the special mom appearance then you’re a real one 🥹🫶🏽)

O
@kokopium8003 thank you for explaining this!! I didn’t want to talk too much about Tyson because I was worried about spoiling him in the rest of the books. But you explained this perfectly!!
I loved Tyson in the books! And watching him and Percy become good friends and brothers made my heart melt 😭 I think he’s a great supporting character in the rest of the series.
I agree that adding in new characters in each book can be confusing but I also liked it because (from what I can remember at least) none of them were useless and came back into the plot one way or another. It does make it harder if you don’t intend on reading the other books in the spin off series (highly recommend because they’re FUCKING FANTASTIC) then you’ll for sure get that feeling of “okay…. Why were they so important if they’re gone now??”
Tyson was disrespected in the movie and I can’t forgive that. I’m praying that if they stick with Rick’s plan, each season will represent each book in order to let the characters breathe and explore the plots better 🙏🏽

The casino is the most iconic scene. Imagine tripping balls in Vegas with your buds while poker face plays in the background!!!
Percy Jackson was so popular in my middle school that we organized an out of school trip, with most of the kids and one of our teachers who was a big fan of the books. We all made Camp Half-Blood shirts and were super excited about it.
The disappointment across the whole theater was palpable. Like, the amount of stuff they changed, added, or ignored was wild to me, especially since the last book in the series had come out by this point. I'm not gonna bore you with everything they changed just know that Percy Jackson fans tend to hate both of these films
12:18 i preferred the reveal in the book. After the quest is over and the story feesl like its done, luke invites percy out to practice in the camps forest. He and percy have some deep talk, and then he reveals how he is working with the lord of titans, and lets a scorpion attack Percy. It was done so quick and fast it gave ne whiplash as i read it
15:42 the weirdest part about the second book, is that percy isn't even given the quest, he practically highjacks it as the others leave
The amount of whiplash I got upon hearing the words "Cirque Du Freak." I loved the book/manga series so much and the movie....just...it was there. But seeing Josh Hutcherson as Steve was kinda funny.
Wait...theres a Cirque du Freak *MANGA*?
'Frantic keyboard clacking and the sound of a wallet opening'
oh my gosh, I had easier access to the manga than the books that it's all I think about when I think about the Darren Shan saga. I spent a long time wishing Demonata also got a manga because I really wanted to see some horrifying visuals. Alas, it's a blessing to have a manga for Cirque du Freak's at all
The worst part of this is that Pierce Brosnan AND UMA FUCKING THURMAN ARE IN THE FIRST MOVIE
15:17 in the books, “the mist” is the veil existing between the gods and the human world, so regular people aren’t able to see monsters or any kind of magic that the demigods can. idk why they decided the spray bottle was the best way to convey that in the movie lol
I hate how the "Hades = Lucifer" trend started when Disney made Hades the bad guy. Then Hollywood saw that idea and thought "Hades is a bad guy cuz he lives in a world similar to that of hell". YOU IDIOTS!! HADES AND LUCIFER ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ENTITIES THAT LIVE IN COMPLETELY DIFFERENT DOMAINS. Underworld has 3 sections; one of the blessed, one for the in-between and one for the wicked (Tartarus). Hell on the other hand is a place for those that disrespected God's will and it's full of suffering and torment. Plus, Hades is just doing his job, keeping the souls of the Underworld in check as they head for the sections they were signed to go (He's kinda like Death but in a Godly manner) but Lucifer on the other hand, he does not care about the souls they go down there for he enjoys their suffering and torment.
youd be pleased to know that the can of mist isnt in the books, while there is a magical effect called the mist that makes mythical creatures and powers look normal, they actually did give tyson big visor sun glasses
PHEW
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief holds a very special place in my heart. It's the first time I ever walked out of a movie cause it sucked so bad.
One of the biggest issues of the second one (other than the fact that it was an obvious cash grab) was the fact that they took the main villain of a 5 book series (Chronos) and made him the big bad of the second movie, so they literally had no choice but to end it on the second one.
The first one was done with a half-finished script, and considering how different different versions of myths could be, could remotely be a different telling.
Riordan didn't have anything to do with the movies. He's directly involved in the Disney+ series (which some people hate because they change some of the characters' appearances).
“This is a pen!” And the casino scene are the only good things the movie gave us (as a book fan)

That John mulaney impression was spot on
0:36 Honestly most of the greek statues have really little dongs. Probably reflecting the region's average at that time. I suspect the one your are referring to was one of Heracles. Actually, a god known for incredible dongage is Pan, god of the wilds. Lots of his statues and has serious heft in the right places
Actually, big ding dong was a sign of being a brute or a small-minded person will you so that size was actually the peak of mans parts, as strange as that is compared to today's standards, so no that was not the average size back then it was just the size you would want to havw back then 😅

The mist is in the book….but not like that lmao. “The mist” refers to a magical power that shrouds mortals from being able to perceive monsters. It’s not a physical thing. Some Demigods are able to use the mist to warp mortals vision. So it’s not like they need to spray him with “the mist” the mist just kinda does its thing by itself
