      I did love that line, but I didn’t like that it was paired with him basically being willing to let the world be destroyed just to spite Poseidon. That’s nowhere NEAR Percy’s character. I would’ve liked to see it implemented in a different way.

      @@ryern6350 respectfully disagree. I get that Percy is very critical of Poseidon (rightfully so) but his strong moral compass has always been a major part of his character, to the point that Athena calls it his fatal flaw. When he’s given the quest in the first book he doesn’t feel up to it. He’s scared and nervous because he’s had little formal training, but he accepts it anyway because it’s the right thing to do. He has the added personal motive of rescuing his mom, but she wasn’t the sole reason he went on the quest (which is why he left her behind in the book).

    So far, as a long-time book fan, I am very happy with the adaptation so far.
    My dislikes were:
    1) The insane info/lore dump from Sally in episode 1. Could have been done better.
    2) MINOR SPOILER FOR NON-READERS = I didn't personally enjoy the sarcastic, confrontational side of Sally towards Gabe. I had so much respect for Sally in the books because she swallowed her emotions and pride in a toxic relationship for the sake of her son. She needed Gabe's stench to hide Percy's godly scent from monsters. By being the way she is in episode 1 towards Gabe, it felt like she was risking the "stability" of that relationship and, by proxy, the safety of Percy. If Gabe left her due to her strong personality, she would lose the mask for Percy's half-blood scent. If Gabe hurt her in retaliation, Percy would inadvertently use his powers in defense of his mother, attracting monsters to him. I wish she was more reserved. It made the end of book 1 and the Medusa head moment so much more impactful and satisfying. Sometimes the hardest battles are fought in silence

    • @Craftidore
      @Craftidore 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +68

      My interpretation of that scene where Sally stands up to Gabe was that it was an exception; a change of pace. She knows Percy is going to summer camp, so it no longer matters if their relationship is stable.

    • @angelinawilson75
      @angelinawilson75 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

      These were my exact feelings! Don't get me wrong, Sally being more confident can be a good thing in these modern times for women, but it also removes the sacrifice of being with Gabe in the first place. I don't think Gabe would leave her because of her strong personality, but it does make the dynamics different from the book, and not necessarily for the better. Regardless, that was my only critique of the first episode, along with the exposition dump, but I blame the show's run time for that. I wonder if they're going to change the ending of Gabe with Medusa for that reason. We'll have to wait and see.

    • @f3lixie
      @f3lixie 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      EXACTLY what I was saying, I don't at all understand the backlash I've seen for this opinion, ppl saying "oh Gabe doesn't have to do this and this to be abusive, Sally doesn't have to act like this and this to be a victim to it" but like- that's what makes you so angry!
      In the books, just the image of Sally's interaction with Gabe, retreating to Percy's room after her long shift at work, giving him blue food and talking about Montauk shows you so much about her character without even Percy himself having to say anything.

    Just finished the 3rd episode and despite the pacing issues (probably my biggest gripe with the show) I really love the character work the series is doing so far, even with the (minor) story changes. I think Rick and the other writers are adding more emotional weight to the fact that the demigods often feel neglected by their parents. That additional weight is going to have massive payoff by the end of the season, particularly for the non-book readers who don't know what's coming. I'm a newer adult fan myself but I am absolutely loving this series even without the nostalgic attachment. I also recently went back to school to study creative writing and I think this show is a great example to work off of when it comes to learning how to make a good adaptation. I've done a tiny bit of book to screen stuff and one of the things you learn almost immediately after trying it out yourself is that you have to consider what should stay the same and what _needs_ to be changed to make the jump to the new medium work effectively. The show is doing a great job of balancing out both sides of the adaptation equation imo

      Totally! 👏🏼 I saw someone describe it as representing the mask that abusers can put on and representing more of the emotional/economic abuse which I definitely agree with and think they did a good job of that! I think my concern is mostly that the tone almost feels comedic in his scenes, like that they chose stylistically to make him seem more silly so it might come off to audiences who don’t know the story that he’s supposed to be just funny and harmless, but I think the emotional weight that the situation needs to be treated with will come at the end of the season! omg sorry that was long haha I just love discussing this show 😂 so happy to hear there’s other fans who read it for the first time this year!!

      @krankarvolund7771 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

      I get what you're saying, but I feel like that should be explored in a different show, where you're centered on the abuser and his victime.
      Here, we get one scene of Gabe in the first episode, and maybe a flashback in the last one, and the punishment of Gabe will be death by Medusa's glare. You NEED a frontal and hard scene to justify that kind of fate, otherwise, it's Sally that will pass for the bad guy ˆˆ'

      @@krankarvolund7771 Yeah I was wondering if they'll even have Gabe be petrified at the end, cus if this guy was killed as he's characterized now it would feel pretty extreme. He's definitely an asshole but doesn't seem outwardly abusive from what we've seen. Maybe they'll just have Sally break up with him at the end, or maybe they'll be a bit more overt with his characterization as a villain by the end. I trust they'll do it right tho and not let Sally be perceived as the bad guy.

Like even out of character, the actors are so good and I’m soaking up every cast interview because they fit so well. I’m excited to see the kids continue to grow as actors on the show where they can make more creative and executive decisions once they are truly comfortable in their roles because they have it! And I think it shows with the adults because the acting choices they are making are soooo perfect like Sally Jackson standing ten toes down for Percy at all times even against Percy himself is just amazing understanding of who Sally is. Honestly this show could be put together with the budget of a 5th grade play for the background and CGI I would still love it because of the actors, so really as long as that continues, I’m all in!

    As someone who read Percy Jackson already at the age of 9 (and later also read all the other series that Rick wrote), first of all I want to say that he is without a doubt my favorite author, and I could really talk about the books for hours but I'll get to the point. I have to admit that at first I didn't connect with the series, and I had a lot of criticism about the casting of the actors, or parts of the plot that appeared in the book but not in the series, but then as the episodes progressed and even when I compared it to the movies, I really fell in love with the series itself, and Walker Scovel is the perfect Percy Jackson ! I will always prefer the books over everything else because I really grew up on them, but I am relatively very happy with the series and Rick really listened to the fans of the books. I personally would really love five seasons...

I like a lot of what we’ve seen so far and think it certainly captures that spirit of the books the “movies” never did, but I’m having a hard time with the pacing. In response to what you have to say about luke (6:20) coming from someone who read the books in high school (about 4 years ago): Luke's was the one casting that I was unhappy with because SPOILER ALERT he is supposed to come off as this fun, sweet, polite, all-around great guy, because that makes the betrayal at the end hurt that much more. But with actor that they chose, you just don't get that feeling. When I was watching this episode with my younger brother and Luke came on screen, he immediately asked me if he was a bully. That is not the vibe we're supposed to get from Luke.
    That's just my opinion.

    • @athena8335
      @athena8335 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Look at first I was also unsure about the casting but after a few scenes with him, I got that charming "I can make everyone blush if I want to" vibe that Luke from the first book has. And well, your little brother was supposed to firstly think, that Luke is a bully, bc Percy thinks so too. And a scarred face isn't particularly often seen on a good guy, which you know, holds true to Luke for quite some time. As soon as he turned the charme on, book Luke is notorious for, I was happy. And I grew up with those books and reread them every year at least ones, for the past six years, so my opinions on Percy Jackson are damn strong and based in a long journey with the books (unfortunately also with the movies, if you can call them that).
      But as you said: Just my opinion.

    I haven't watched this yet and I was waiting for a sneak peek from you before I did. I was in my 20's working with school age kids when I read it and dang, we all read it aloud and had the best time laughing and experiencing it together. Just from this clip, when Sally is telling Percy he isn't broken, as a mom now, I cried. This series is going to be good, especially if that really was Pimento as Dionysus.

    First thing, just want to say I honestly prefer that you publish your videos one week after the episodes came out. First, don't overwork yourself of course, and second, it gives me time to watch the episodes on my own without getting spoiled XD
    Personally I would have two complaints, a very minor one on the SFX, I feel like Chiron is slightly off, like his horse body is too big for his human half, so he looks like a weird chimera stitched together, not an actual monster like the Minotaur or Grover.
    But it's very minor, and really in a few scenes where he's shot from far aside, other than that it works fine ˆˆ
    Second, from an adaptation, I don't like the way they go with Gabe, as you said he feel sanitized, and I get that they probably did it to up Sally's character which is a very good thing in my books but I have two problems with it.
    First, if Sally is a strong independant woman who yells on her abusive husband, it gives her strength, but also diminish the sacrifice she made that we learn at the end, staying with an abusive smelly husband to keep Percy hidden from monsters.
    Second, if Gabe is not as abusive as in the book, he doesn't deserve his fate anymore. I've already felt weird in the books that she killed Gabe and all his Poker friends, killing only Gabe is probably one of the rare good choices of the movie.
    But if you change the couple dynamics from "abusive husband and helpless wife" to "dysfunctionnal relationship with litte abuse", well I don't support the end method to be "kill the husband" ˆˆ'
    Wow, I've written a novel about two negative points while I really enjoyed this show XD

    • @breelynn2797
      @breelynn2797 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Hey! I agree with most your points but after rereading the book today I wanted to lyk that Sally only kills Gabe in the book and not his friends. She reports him missing to police and then sells a piece to a soho gallery titled “The Poker Player”. Just the one ugly neorealism sculpture of Gabe, so you dont have to worry about his friends (one of which was relatively nice)!

      I’M SO GLAD SOMEONE POINTED OUT THE CHIRON ISSUE!! LIKE WHY THE FUCK IS HE THAT TALL WHAT THE HELL IT’S NOT LIKE A CENTAUR IS A CREATURE THAT IS RARELY SEEN IN FILM JESUS CHRIST
      Ok screaming over.
      I do really agree with the Gabe point though. In fact, two of the best parts of the movie, in my opinion, were Chiron’s (general, obviously not fantastic but general) accuracy, and how terrifying and rage-inducing Gabe was on sight, and how he was disgusting to both Percy and Sally. It made the reveal of Sally’s reasoning MUCH more impactful, and as a casual fan, I was surprised by how angry I was that that whole section was watered down.

    I prefer the pen 🖊️ design in the movie 🎥 I know that tv show pen is more book accurate. But think about it from a merchandising point of view, people would want to buy tokens and memorabilia to be a part of their favorite fandom. They could have done a cool visual media design pen. Something I would want to buy and put on my shelf. As my Percy Jackson token.
    It’s just a basic pen nothing special about it

    • @krankarvolund7771
      @krankarvolund7771 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      I mean, it's the point of the pen ˆˆ
      Especially in a later scene, he will have to put back the cap on the hilt of the sword to write, a thing he never thought about XD
      I get the merchandising argument, but like... between the Minotaur's horn, the sword itself (Riptide?), and of course the T-shirts and necklaces with beads, I think we've got more than our faire share of merchandising XD

    • @yuukinoyuki9064
      @yuukinoyuki9064 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I always liked that it was just a pen. It fit in with how the mist made everything completely mundane. And, honestly, of all the reasons to make changes to the story - merchandising is not the one I'd support.
      There's already going to be a million options for merchandizing; Riptide can be miniaturized to be sold in sword form, alongside other weapons like backbiter, if need be. The Helm of Darkness, the Master Bolt, the Trident, Camp Halfblood beads and shirts, all the monsters as mythomagic figurines, heck mythomagic cards, drachma, stickers advertising Hermes Delivery Service, etc. And that's just from book 1.

    I already had to pause it when the opening started verbatim like the book. I just knew it was going to be great! 😍 It was indeed very nostalgic, since I read the books in middle school (later series in high school) and I’m 26 now. Though I agree that Gabe was more a pathetic Gabe than a menacing, clearly abusive Gabe, all the rest is exactly how I imagined them. I can really see why Annabeth calls Percy Seaweed brain this time. All I can say is, thank you uncle Rick!!

    I read the lightning thief for the first time when I was twelve (I am 23 now) and I think the show is a perfect adaptation so far. Exhibit A f this being that they revealed hi parentage so well in the show that I totally forgot that that's not how it happened in the book (honestly, I like how the show did it better). Ithink you're right in saying that they are taking care to make the show accessible to people who aren't familiar with the source material, but still pleasing to the people who do. I love it so much already! ALSO I TOTALLY MISSED UNCLE RICK IN THE BACKGROUND! THAT'S SO COOL!!!!

    Sally’s line before she disappears where she tells Percy “you are singular” is what broke me, cuz as an adhd adult who got diagnosed as a kid but didn’t fully understand adhd until I was an adult, I feel like my identity got splintered into the various things I saw in myself. I was a shy bookworm, now I’m not. I’m an artist and a writer but I can’t seem to finish anything I start. My adhd influences everything I do, everything I think and feel, every choice I make, so what if I’m nothing more than my disorder? Then Sally said “You are singular” and it clicked with something in my mind. I am not a byproduct of mental illness, I am not just what I manage to create, I am a person with worth, and I may be made up of a bunch of different interests and experiences but there’s no need to have one of those define me. I can pull all those influences together in the shape of a human being who has intrinsic value in her existence.

    I binge read all 5 pjo books in the last week and the show thus far is near IMMACULATE
    A faithful adaptation that is artistically unique. My only gripe is a minor one- that being Medusa being a prettyfied white woman with a hat instead of the more logical old crone in a burka from the book, and the general de-aging of the so far 3 old lady characters that have appeared. Otherwise just about everything is gorgeous and sincerely crafted.
    Interestingly, all the scenes featuring heavy uses of cgi (the furies, the minotaur, the dryad) have been incredibly slow and still in terms of movement of any kind- even though three of these such scenes have been action scenes. It makes me wonder what materials they were working with for the cgi and the constraints

    I picked up the first two Percy Jackson books at a huge book fair we have in my city. They were unknown back then, so me and my sister, who always loved mythology and saw a sweet promotion, got both. It was... very life changing? In every opportunity after that we took turns asking the new releases on special occasions as gifts (bdays, christmas etc). It was around the same era when whatsapp and tumblr were starting, and in both platforms I came in contact with the fandom. My best friends online for what, 10 years now? Almost 11? Are all from the PJO fandom.
    So it's an understatement to say that it's been magical for us to go back to this universe together, discuss the episodes when they come out, and relive those sweet moments we've had as kids. The PJ fandom has always been loyal, vocal and percystent (that's how we call ourselves in my country 😅), because multiple times every year people made campaigns to try and make a reboot happen somehow, by a company that cared. No one ever gave up on it. So it's amazing to have this now, a show made with so much thought, care and love by everyone involved. I feel happy as a fan and happy for the fandom bc everyone deserves it so much, and I also feel happy for those who are not familiar with it at all that are getting to know the magical world that changed my life and helped build my character.
    I probably took too long with this comment, but it was all to say that I'm having a super fun time watching with my sister as well as watching other ppl watching it 😂 it's been great ❤❤

    I first read Percy Jackson books when I was around 15, now I’m in my early 20s, so I’m a really bitter person (plus a perfectionist)😂 Reading these books was an awesome experience and I genuinely LOVE these books and its characters, Percy being my favourite of all. So of course I am biased towards the series because of that! I would say, that I personally didn’t really like the first episode of the Disney series - for me the tone jumped all over the place and Percy wasn’t as sassy as he should have been. I felt like script-writers changed roles: they gave Percy’s sassy character to Sally, Sally’s cautious and silent behaviour to Percy and Gabe is just… not really that disgusting and awful. Also I personally would say that they made the goodbyes and Minotaur fighting scenes way too long where they should have been much more fast, because the heroes are being chased. I didn’t feel it. BUT! I understand that adapting such a book as Percy’s is REALLY hard, because in the book a lot of Percy’s sassiness we see out of the actual scenes (like in his head, otherwise he’d be dead) and all the actors were really great considering even their age, I just think script could’ve been better. But I enjoyed for the most part the second episode (though some jokes were more out of place for me than funny), the tone there tried more to be like Percy’s and not overly dramatic like it was in the first episode, and something tells me that series will become better in the next episodes, when the awkward beginning is over with and forgotten (beginnings are always awkward). Otherwise the casting is great for almost everybody, and the camp is close to what I’ve imagined. Oh, and I really liked Percy at the end of the second episode when he talked to Chiron and Mr.D - that was Percy I know from the books.
    Thanks Mikaila for the review! All have great holidays! :)

    Having not read the books or seen the films, I decided to watch the show as an experiment (and not at all because I'm too lazy to read the books, nope...shut up). I have really enjoyed the first couple of episodes. More than anything else, there's a certain charm to it all, plus I really enjoyed the maturity of the storytelling. Annabeth's "I don't give a monkey's left nut what anyone thinks" attitude is hilarious.
    I was a bit bemused by Percy's parentage. It makes me wonder whether his mother thought that she boinked Zeus (hey, the odds are good) and named her son Perseus accordingly. It's a nice red herring by the author.

    I think every episode so far has been better than the last and I just hope it continues. Episode 7 is the one I think will be the best. Most of that episode will probably be the underworld and then maybe even Ares at the very end. That will be such an epic episode.

    I decided to read the book before seeing the episodes that were like the chapter, for example i read until Percy meeting Hades for guarantee Medusa plot. And is wild! I wanted to end because the feeling or rush is so good.
    I have been a "yeah i know some parts of Percy Jackson" thing, but actually stopping and appreciate is some different of a feeling.
    This is why this show is already better than the film, it made me curious to know better.

    I grew up with the books - didn't realize Chalice of the Gods came out sometime within the last couple of years but I absolutely love the show. Some minor things I had an issue with like not enough Annabeth involvement in the second ep but I think I know what they're going for. For me, Percy and Annabeth's relationship is like one of my absolute favorite things about the book so I just wanted to see more. I haven't seen ep 3 yet but excited to watch it! I think they did a great job with everything and camp half blood is exactly as I imagined it to be. Some things felt a little rushed but I think that's about normal given we only have 8 eps for this.

    Tbh I was so disappointed by the first two episodes. Mostly because of the editing and pacing. And the directing. The director should have given more directions to Scobell to emote more, in the scenes where dangerous things were happening no one hardly made a noise and it needed more music to build up the suspense. But I really liked Leah Jeffries as Annabeth and Charles Bushnell as Luke. What I disliked was how they rushed things, the change in Gabe, 100% the movie did him better, and I didn't like that Percy didn't need to touch the water to beat Clarisse because now he's just magically good at fighting "just because". But my main gripe was with the bad pacing, editing and some of the adult actors bad acting. I don't want to be too harsh on the child actors because I mostly think it is the director's fault for not getting Scobell to show more emotion, and also they're children and will develope in their acting skills. That being said, I gave the third episode a chance and it was in my opinion much better than the first two, and I liked the dynamic between the three leads, so I'm gonna continue to watch it.

      I understand this so much! It's like you just gave an explanation to my thoughts of "something is off, but I can't really say what". 😢

    I read the books when i was 13, eight years ago, and i've read the Lightning Thief about 6 times, i think. This series is. Everything. I am so so so emotional. I've already watched the episodes three times and i'm planning to rewatch them with my brothers in two days so. It's just gorgeous. And funny. I am so happy this is happening.
