    I was a little intimidated by this fly, but you demystified. I'll start maybe with a size 16 and move my way down to a 22. Thanks for this!

    Nice tie, I am sure that bandaid didn't do you any favors when trying to get those hackle fibers away from the eye. You managed to get a great looking fly out of it anyway. True professional. All the best, Sean

    What other materials could you substitute for the hen hackle for the wings?

      You could substitute another feather, such as CDC feathers in natural or blue dun. With CDC, you can split the feathers or tie them in as a single clump. You could replace the feathers with a yarn like the EP Trigger point fibers.

      Depends on the hatch. For example, where I'm at this fly is usually tied with hooks size 14-20. I'd start with a 14, which is fairly standard, and tie a few in each smaller size so you have options. Then, observe your area's etymology or try using each to see what matches/works best.
