Well what I learned from a quite a few years of studying Aikido and after many many years of kick boxing before that is that Aikido is a great martial for people who already know how to fight. The thing is that Aikido such an advanced martial art that at the lower levels its practical applications are not obvious. But if you want to see some aikido in more of a combat situation watch any of the Keanu Reeves John Wick moves. The fight choreography in those movies very effectively mixes combat Aikido with jujitsu. Well that's my take on it anyway.
@@ErikCalderon i did not know that. But I do know that every Aikido sensei I studied under was at least a Nidon in some other Japanese martial art. Back in the early 80's when I studied Aiki in Orlando my sensei was a guy named Ken Clark I believe he was originally a Goju guy and the other Sensei's that I studied with were both Judo guys. Oh and you are totally correct about learning to fall. I think Aikido is the only art that teaches falling and rolling and how to break your fall and really drills that skill in. Even now almost 40 years later that falling and breaking the fall saved my life a couple years ago when I slipped on some grease in the kitchen, if not for Aiki that would have been damaged vertebrae for sure. I went back to kickboxing in the 90's, but all in all I would say the the years I studied Aiki were very beneficial. The concept of the dynamic sphere, the knowledge of momentum, and inertia, the physics of combat, especially dynamic combat, not so much static combat, but dynamic combat, that knowledge is priceless. When I think about Aiki now I think of it as an integration into other skills. Like Bruce Lee said "take what works and throw away the rest"
In summary: If you signed up for a traditional martial art under the pretext of learning to "defend yourself and others" you may have been lied to. Learn martial arts to become a better person. If you want to become a fighter, find a way to practice fighting. Bullet points 1. Don't learn Aikido for self defense 1:59 2. you can "protect yourself" by learning to fall properly 2:18 3. exercise is a way to protect yourself 3:07 (also, please eat healthy) 4. Wear a helmet (ft PewDiePie ?) 3:46 5. "Aikido is not a fighting art". 3:49 6. Don't learn a martial art to become a fighter, learn it to become a better person...3:54 7. if you want to learn to fight...you will have to learn to fight 4:06
Great video. I totally agree with your concept of self defense. We all assume it involves another person or multi-person fights-that’s not often the case. The biggest culprits are the things you mentioned. It’s your diet, your lifestyle, and potential injuries that stem from bad diets or unhealthy lifestyles. Incorporating this philosophy is important for a healthy lifestyle.
I enjoyed your stance on what 'Self-Defense' means. We definitely focus too much on the violence and not on the ways we can stay safe in everyday situations
I am an old Aikidoka. I have been practicing for 56 years. Nowadays, there's too much bashing Aikido and way too much on comparing any art to MMA. This is ridiculous. If those guys looking for the most lethal art would spend a month in jail, or bedridden in a hospital, or in a wheel chair, they would stop looking for ways to hurt or getting hurt. Self-defense is not only surviving physical confrontation. It's more about protecting yourself in advance. Invest in your health, longevity and peace of mind. Never run into a fist fight. If you have to face a physical attack, use any art in moderation. If they have machine guns, and you are empty handed, escape. Life is precious.
So there's a reality TV thing on TH-cam called ultimate self-defense championship which involves lots of black belts and MMA title holders in this self-defense championship guys who win titles still get stabbed to death when confronting a singular opponent with a knife the same guys also take a lot of beating with training...
this is a good way to look at it. I no longer practice judo and taekwondo, but I remember so much of what I learned.
It's like riding a bike. You never really forget....
Great information and learning to fall is a great takeaway!
Thank you! Yea, falling is something we do.....

I heard that O’Sensei would only accept students that were already a black belt in another art….just a rumor I heard.

Sick video
