Absolutely nothing beat the feeling of skimming through your recommended and discovering a TH-camr you've never heard about that's funny, has a nice voice, good editing, and nice loooooooong videos about a subject matter near and dear to your heart. Amazing video, consider me a fan!
Something that really bugs me about the Legacy Collection is that they went and changed the Maverick names in X5 back to their Japanese names (or at least localized versions of them), and replaced the intro and ending songs in this game to original compositions, yet they refused to update this game's script. Or any of the games' scripts for that matter, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Oh another random thing X5 removed the demo mode which was used for speed runs to manipulate the RNG for the cannon and shuttle. apparently for it to work it’s decided every frame of active gameplay in a stage but since the demo was removed it’s pretty much just trying to leave the stage at the right moment
Which is dumb because both X6 and X7 arguably needed those script updates, especially X6. Heck, I'm amazed they didn't go and correct any flaws, such as simplifying the Heart Tank and injured Reploids systems where each weapon energy tank and Heart Tank is universal. I get wanting people to experience the game on more modern hardware, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't fix any issues the original had, especially since you should still have the original code.
Yeah, the developers of this game just said "fuck it" to playtesting. Seriously. This game could have been so freaking perfect. Filled with cool concepts, but with poor execution.
That's pretty much the only reason X6 is only my second favorite X game. If it had been playtested more and had a better translation it probably would have been one of the best games of all time. Yes I like X6, it's a lot like X3 where it's hard at the start, but by the end you're on a power trip and it's really satisfying
58:27 I don’t remember if there were mistranslations in the rest of the cutscene dialogue, but robot is not a mistranslation. X and Zero are robots. The last robots or first reploids is debatable, but if that’s Wily, then robot seems accurate.
with how the maverik virus contagion works, I'd believe that zero was supposed to be the last RobotMaster, especially how it has litteraly been punched out of him by sigma, like physically breaking a hard drive after you copied the data
X and Zero aren't even arguably reploids, the only reason they refer to themselves as such is that they either don't know better (pre-X4 Zero) or it's simpler to explain/nobody knows their origins barring a half dozen exceptions
Somebody else went into this already, but I'm reasonably certain I've pinned down the Nightmare effect's behavior. When a stage is highlighted in red, that means it was affected specifically by the stage you were just in. The same effect will then stay there, regardless of whether it's red or not, until you play another stage that changes it. For example if you play Shield Sheldon's level, Blizzard Wolfang will have the X and Zero clones in it until you go to Blaze Heatnix, at which point it changes to the fire rain.
Yep, I've seen other reviewers complain about how confusing and random the effects are, but this is all it is. Nightmare effects are "sticky" and red highlighting is just what was most recently changed/activated.
I could have forgiven most of the technical issues if the writing team had seized the incredible opportunities they had with this story as long as they were undoing the whole X5 finale thing. They could have created an even more satisfying finale by tying up the biggest loose end of X5... Dr. Wily/Isoc. He should have been the final boss and the mastermind of the Nightmare Phenomena, using Gate for his own purposes. If they still decided to bring back Zero, have him actually explain that Wily brought him back in a desperate attempt to continue his X5 plan, but Zero broke free before he could control him. Use this blatant undoing of a previous plot point to add more story. This way, no matter who you choose, the final battle would be the most anticipated of the series. Either Zero faces off with his creator and fights against the destiny that was planned for him... or X swears to finally put an end to the century long struggle between Dr. Light and Dr. Wily, and to finally bring down the man who can ultimately be blamed for literally everything in the series. Maybe even an awesome cutscene shot from Wily's point of view of X standing up to him with a shadow of Mega Man behind him or something like that. But no... just Sigma. Again.
Heck it even could've worked as a tie to the Original Plotline of the Zero Series, Willy comes back and once again threatens peace in the world, already devasted by the Eurasia and Nightmare incidents, X rises as a Protector and Leader of Neo Arcadia, the last Stronghold of Humans and Reploids alike, But Willy has always been tricky, with the Sigma virus taking over the minds of Reploids ,the Nightmares mutating over their bodies and both being able to manifest phisically in bizarre shapes and distortions in reality (insert lore of cyber elves as a counter measure here, elf/nightmare wars may or not apply), it also gives Wily terrifying infiltration capabities, nobody can tell for sure who may be infected untill whole cities turn into more Dopplertowns devastaded by the awakening of sleeper agents, this paranoia gets even to X, who gradually loses hope and empathy and instils scorched earth tactics and a tyranicall goverment in fear of Willy's shadow, 100 years later, Zero awakens and the events of the original plot of Z1 happen, however, the death of X and a good chunk of Neo Arcadia's upper ecchelons open the gates for Willy, Z2 may or not happen with Elpizo as a Sleeper agent, Z3 happens but with willy undercovered again, Z4 may happen or maybe in Z3 we get straight to the Final battle of Creation vs Creator
Okay, this abandoned plot point is so good, it makes me think the Sigma reveal in X7 was tame in comparison to Gate copping out in X6, even though Sigma as the final boss for literally seven main games in a row meant it was obviously getting old.
This is seriously one of the best video game reviews I've seen on TH-cam ever. You talked about pretty much everything I could think of to talk about without wasting any time, gave some seriously good and necessary commentary on everything you brought up, and did so with some of the best sense of comedy and comedic timing I've had the pleasure to laugh at. I think it even beats out both J's Reviews' and Retropolis Zone's reviews. Such a great video my guy. I want to bring up a few points I noted throughout the review, starting with a little quip you made about no-armor X at 22:26, and I can confirm after beating the game just today playing through the game to 100% completion as no-armor X on extreme difficulty, NEVER try to play this game as no-armor X unless you are going so mad that it's liberating. Some of the most inconsequential bits of gameplay normally just became an absolute trial to play through and, in a weird twist of fate, a couple of the more annoying bits during normal gameplay feel like a complete joke by comparison to all the other trite you now have to deal with. And because you're now probably thinking, "What about the impossible jump?" I can now absolutely confirm that it is actually totally possible to make that jump with no exploits or extra tricks of any kind as no-armor X. IT'S JUST NEAR IMPOSSIBLE. You NEED to have Hyper Dash equipped and make sure not to have Jumper equipped, then make a near PIXEL-PERFECT jump off of the VERY bottom of the ledge you have to jump from. You have to slide down to the absolute lowest possible height without falling off that you can get away with, then start mashing the jump button in preparation for landing on the other side (so that you don't slip off and fall the moment you connect because, assuming you do connect, you'll be near the lowest possible height on the other wall as well). I also wanted to bring up an interesting observation I've made about the nightmare system over the years, because I think I've actually managed to come to some sort of proper understanding on how it works. Basically, you can separate the different Nightmare Phenomena into two different categories that I like to call "Permanent" and "Temporary." Permanent nightmare phenomena mean exactly what you think; The moment they are activated, they stay as part of their affected stage forever. Examples include the Nightmare Bugs in the Laser Institute and Magma Area, and the Nightmare Rain in the Amazon Area and Central Museum. Temporary nightmare phenomena mean what the game states and shows the phenomena to mean, activating based on the last stage visited. Examples include the Nightmare Fire in the North Pole Area and the Nightmare Iron in the Magma Area. I haven't had a chance to thoroughly test all of this, this is just how it seems to roughly function based on my many playthroughs of X6 up to this point, and I'd love it if someone with more in-depth knowledge of the game could go in and try to officially record how it all exactly works on a programming level. And by the way, this form of Sigma does have an official name as demonstrated in XLC's Hunter Medals menu. It's "Hell Sigma." Finally, I wanted to say that, for a time, Mega Man X6 was my definitive least favorite/most hated video game I had ever played in my life. I played it for my first time during the summer of 2016 on the PS2 X Collection and hated it to absolutely no end. If there exists an objective way to judge a video game's quality, I would elect Mega Man X6 for the title of "Objective Worst Video Game Ever Made." But honestly, after some 10 odd playthroughs, I actually kind of enjoy Mega Man X6. Don't have me mistaken here, I'm not saying that it's good, quite the opposite, but I am saying that it is my greatest guilty pleasure video game, as I recognize that it's a complete piece of garbage that I have a good time playing. I think I like it as "the hard one," so to speak. This game has no good reason to exist, and I have no good reason to know it as well as I do.
@@thunderknight4149 It did take me a while, probably 40 odd minutes, but I don't see why I shouldn't put the time in to write a miniature essay on a video like this, especially if I'm having fun writing it. I realize it's absolutely ridiculous to waste time writing a comment this long on a highly viewed video by a much more subscribed to TH-camr (that's something I learned by doing), but when you have a much smaller (comparatively) channel with a far higher likelihood of the creator and any other viewers actually seeing the comment, I might as well. Besides, I just have a whole lot to say about Mega Man X6. This game is one of the ones I think I have the absolute most that I could say about it of any game I've played, as reflected by my original comment.
The mysterious voice calling zero the strongest robot is actually correct. He is not a reploid. Unless you meant some other bad translation. Can't comment to that.
Honestly, this makes sense. I don’t know if it’s quite true, but since Reploids weren’t invented until X, who was a secret project by Dr. Light, it’s plausible and even likely. Still, it’s probably just a translation error, but food for thought.
@order-sol's last brain cell X is reploid to have self thinking ,Zero is a advanced robot like og megaman, bass and protoman but he have a special chip that make him stronger than anyone else until Sigma broke it and while he's weaker,he still stronger than X without using power of the other maverick he killed which is why he was leader of Maverick hunter before self dustructed himself against Vale and got replacement being elite MH
@order-sol's last brain cell X can GROW stronger, Zero was supposed to BE stronger, and the fact he gets special ability from bosses, instead of weapons, makes me thing that his setup is to have adaptative abilities against whatever is being thrown at him as part of the programming the thing with how he basically got the part of programming that causes the maverik virus to be punched out of him makes me believe that it was contained in the component that would have made him a RobotMaster (as the virus would have somewhat caused other robots to malfunction in manner advantageous for him), with the latter classic game pointing thoward a combined use of EvilEnergy data, Roboenza and the GearSystem to breack the limits that RobotMasters had
X6 is one of my fave games in the series, but mostly for its unforgivable broken difficulty. It is a deeply flawed game, but I find myself coming back to it the most. Trying to find new ways to increase the difficulty. My last playthrough, I beat the game with no armor X. It was deeply frustrating, but gave me a truly fulfilling sense of achievement, which I don't get from 100% completing my real favorite Mega Man games, (3, X1, X4 and Zero 2) good review though ^^ keep up the good work.
To be fair, unarmoured X has easily the best charged shot out of all of his versions, barring the Ultimate armour, so if you want to do a buster only run, it's by far your best bet.
@@Skallva Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I was also playing it without grabbing any heart containers or abilities from saving reploids. You really appreciate Commander Yammark's weapon, when you're not using any armor.
"Alright, this won't be as linear as I planned. I already f***ed off to a different stage and ended up killing Mijinion last, so I'll be coming back to you, Plankton!" *"WHAAAAT!?!?!"*
55:00 which is true, as the translation for X6 when Zero was like "I hid myself while I repaired myself" actually said that Zero doesnt know what had happened to him but when he awoke someone appeared to repaired him, implying to be Isoc.
Lovely stuff! Great editing in this my friend! Big fan of Mega Man here, and while there are _lots_ of Mega Man reviews, it's rare to come across ones like these which _aren't_ an obnoxious regurgitation of other reviews.
@@stevenfan8704 I was already at my limit after King Tank and that god AWFUL music from that boss. King 2 as Megaman? FORGET ABOUT THAT SHIT!!! THAT FUCKING FIST ATTACK!!!
I always felt that giving you the Fourth Armor and Falcon Armor at the beginning of X5 and X6 really undermined all the 8 boss master weapon power ups. I never even used the boss power-ups, until I started playing the games without equipping any armor, and guess what? I enjoyed the game a bit better.
A couple notes for X6 for anyone looking to play, or anyone who just doesn't know about these: The Guard Shell glitch works with X! If it overlaps with the Blade armor's charge shot or charge saber, or the Ultimate armor's charge shot, it also causes damage stacking! However, unlike with Zero, it doesn't work on bosses. The parts screen is bugged! If you select and deselect a part on the same frame, you equip that part without taking up a part slot, so as long as you have at least one slot, you can equip all the parts you want. You'll know you've done it correctly if the ding sound is louder than normal and the slot is still green. You can still only equip one limited part, though. If you're having trouble with Mijinion, go in as UNARMORED X with Quick Charge and Buster plus. The fully charged shot will destroy the bubbles in one hit. This combo also one-shots the Nightmare viruses, even on hard mode. X's charged Ray Arrow does charged weakness damage (8 damage) to the main 8 bosses, except Mijinion, since all the bosses are immune to their own weapons. Quick Charge is the strongest part in the game for X and makes the game a ton easier. It's held by the reploid next to the portal to the Dynamo area in Satan's Museum. Using Ground Scaravich's weapon (Sentsuizan) cancels the Ensuizan glitch
@tdawgmaster1729 technically true, albeit the game is much easier with it, the bosses aren't the problems, its the stage design thats so hard. The totem pole segment in gate 2 comes to mind
Oddly enough, I had a surprising amount fun on my recent playthrough of this game. Once you realize you can use yourself to lure most nightmare viruses away from reploids for safe killing by only getting the former on the screen, and use multiple save slots just in case, that part is actually not too bad. Especially considering you can just rescue a few reploids, burn your lives, exit, save in an older slot, check your list, and then go back for more, meaning you don’t have to rescue them all consecutively (granted it takes debatably longer). And after you get certain parts, like the one allowing for all shots to be automatically charged by default, plus Yammar Option, you can just freaking rampage through many areas. I was charging through nightmare viruses recklessly to get the reploids because the things die almost immediately to the overcharged, mystical power of Dragonflies. I haven’t done the Lab Stages yet which may be the killer for me, but the main game only really pissed me off in the Recycle Lab and Turtloid’s bonus areas. (the latter because of the excessive random spikes and cores in the dark, and the former because of the stupid Nightmare Press gimmick and one single, evilly placed Reploid and nightmare viruse at the end of the secret area). If they redid some of the nightmare effects, changed a few areas like the F-You spikes/gap in the lab, fixed a few enemies placements, and dubbed it with a proper translation, It’d be a pretty solid game imo. Also if you use shadow armor and Ultimate Buster you automatically become God because you can tank damage like mad, the giga attack shreds bosses like a laser cheese grater, the automatically charged blade decimates anything without proper invincibility frames, like the Cables in Mijinion’s stage, and you can harvest Dynamo for souls because evidently he has a proclivity to drop them when he gets cut in a certain, specific state. Virtually nothing gives me more of an easy power trip.
X6 is actually my favorite. I love all the extra armor, collecting all the rescues, secret side bosses and the sick customization x7 and 8 changed the formula to much for me
i guess im the only one actively love this game then, the controls are great, we have a stronger motivation to rescue reploids because their lives are at the edge this time (and very rewarding if you rescued them), the level design is pushing it's limits to see how extreme a 2d side scroller action game can be, it's true there are some questionable / cheap design in specific area, but overall it has one of the best x armor in the entire X series, and Zero's saber combat just awesome, with the extreme level design it is a test to the player and it also shows if a boss character wants you die, they will do everything to make you die as hard as possible before face to face. I want to mention this, it seems a lots people doesnt really care about why Sigma is extremely weak in this game? This could be a bug / oversight from the developers ofcourse but does anyone noticed that Sigma isnt fully resurrected.. or more like isnt fully recovered, in a story stand point this is Sigma's weakest point and his consciousness is extremely unstable so this could be a reason why sigma is so easy in x6. Still it's a great review, x6 is the introduction for me to the megaman x series back then, maybe it's just me but, i still think it is one of the best megaman x games to this day.
I agree Man, people may not like this but I enjoy having to retry a fight over and over until im good enough to beat it. Naked X in Xtrme difficulty really made me spend hours trying different strategies until I made it. It was very fun.
48:49 makes me cackle like a madman for some reason "Wakey wakey, it's time for schoo!" Maybe it's the fact that your voice cracks up that cracked me up.
I actually love so much about X6: The story, the backgrounds and art design, the armors and especially the music, but, as you said, the actual game part of the game just drags it down, and it's one of the few pre-GBA era Megaman games I haven't finished, but this video has inspired me to give it another shot sometime soon. Am I going to use ridiculous things you mentioned in this video to break the game? Yes, yes I am.
As broken as this game is i'm glad that it happened. It saved megaman zero plot for me. The original megaman zero plot (x gone insane/zero is the original so no omega) is horrible compare to the one we got imo.
omega is just the original body but with a different reploid inside, if i remember well it was stated that zero got transferred to another body and Dr. Weil just stole the original body because of how powerful it was but i get what you mean
@@justarandomguy9577 yeah that was the plot after x6 happened (the one we got). Post x5 mmz plot was to have ciel find zero broken torso and fix him up to fight against x if i remember correctly. In that case the original plot would have no weil/omega and x being so out of character that it was worse than x7's x.
@@anexistingperson8540 Idk how to feel about that. Making x the bad guy just make the whole x series story have no meaning at all. I'm sure if that zero plot is real me and others x fan would just boycott it since it just make x unnoticeable. Honestly i think that while making the original plot inafune just hate x because capcom don't agree to make zero the protagonist of the snes series so he just want x to be seen as much of a badguy as possible, neglecting his entire personality in the previous games.
just so you know… when high max coming down simply crouch or dash through on the ground then he wont be able to touch you anyways🙈 and this works in both two high max fight
The saddest part for me is that it had the potential to be good yet it isn't. The robot masters have the best designs yet and I really like the story and side character's. I'd say x6 is a bunch of small problems that turned into one big clump of trash.
Indeed, first of all the soundtrack kicks ass, at least they got that right. The new Zero sprites are also a nice touch, even if the mechanics could use some fine-tuning. The REAL shitshow, to me at least, is at the second Gate Stage, if I recall correctly, the crusher after defeating High-Max. I could put up with the other issues, but this is what made me rage-quit.
X6 had potential of being one of, If not, the best Megaman X game The soundtrack is fire, the stages had more unique ideas/design than X5's stages, X's new armors are fun to use, Zero's new sprites and slashes looks great, bosses designs are fantastic, stages had alternate routes and lots of ways to reach the final stages It's such a shame that had a rushed development, destroying the most important cores to a Megaman X game: Level Design and Balance, both completely broken It's a game I feel bad for being such a mess
@@morrowlterraslove I'd say it does look far better utilized due to bosses being sprites with genuinely good animation, rather than static props that were common in X4-6, in Salamander 2 they used better texturing and lighting prefixes than the overly bright or static lighting seen in X6
It's fun if you play rookie hunter mode on the legacy collection, I think. I never played it on that difficulty and made myself suffer by 100% it on the legacy collection. Trust me, was about as fun as it sounded.
That was more in depth than I ever could have imagined! You nailed this review hands down, Trav! Great coverage and editing. Also those Plankton, Sheldon, and... whoever the "plane-sounding guy" was were all moments of perfection. Keep up the great work man! =)
This is exactly how I felt playing it when I was younger on the original x collection for the ps2. Then I started to see people mentioning how bad it was and went back to play it, life was better when I thought it was just part of the game how unfair it was.
46:13 I used to do that jump with speedster+jumper without using the charge shot/giga attack, but it is a pain of a jump. You need to be in pretty much the last pixel of the starting wall and you barely make it to the end. I always were with the Shadow Armor because it made a lot easier the previous segment
X6 is fascinating to me because it uses the exact same engine and gameplay as X4, one of my favorite games of all time, and yet this is one of the most frustrating bullshit games I have ever played. I feel like it really goes to show the importance of level design in platformers, as that can be what makes or breaks it.
Yes, the game had great ideas and a cool aesthetic, but thanks to the rushed development the most important things to make a Megaman X game work: Level Design and Balance are all over the place Some fans defend X6 saying that some problems comes from using the same engine from X4, but the thing is X4 and even X5, had a good enough Level Design that it didn't showed those problems in the first place
@ayrtonjoga I'm not saying it's better than X6 because of it, in my opinion, they're both equally bad, but the infuriating level design and Nightmare Phenomenon is what really makes me hate X6. While I can see why people would rather have a frustrating bad game, I'd rather have a slow bad game over a frustrating one, so yes, I'd rather play X7.
Entertaining, well-edited, and very informative watch! Thanks for taking the time to put this together, gladly subscribed and will be looking forward to more content in the future.
Something that's very noticeable about X6 is that it's irritating by design. It's really hard to not take damage because the game straight up VOMITS enemies and projectiles at you in every level. I think they knew this during development because even though there's a lot of shit on the screen all the time, they don't do much damage. So the result of this is that most enemies aren't very threatening, they're just annoying, like a mosquito or a buzzing fly.
I hold X6 in my heart, despite all of its blemishes, due to being my first ever Mega Man X game. But that being said, I pretty much agree with everything you said. Those Nightmare Effects were utter garbage, that almost impossible Shadow Armor jump, so many things that really drove me to near madness, but I still like parts of the game that really stuck with me. Seeing all of the different designs for the Rescuable Reploids was nice, seeing a new face from stage to stage (Even if one is just a recolored enemy, lol), the amazing music, spritework and the Shadow Armor remains one of my favorite armor designs. Here's hoping that the MMX6 Tweaks Project makes it a great game that it felt like it should've been. Anywho, great review, Trav! ^_^
It was my 2nd one and its fun. Commander Yanmark, Shield Sheldon, and Central Museum wasn't too bad Gates lab annoyed me to know end. Rainy Turtloid isn't bad unless the nightmare effect are going on. Screw Infinity Mijinion (Water Flea), Blaze Heatnix (stage specifically), and Metal Shark Player (Stage cus stupid Shadow armour). Blizzard Wolfang isn't too bad however
I've grinded this game a lot over the years and I don't think I've ever seen a game utterly fail at comprehensive level design. Everything I know about this game is from multiple playthroughs. I still play because the PS1 X Engine is so sickeningly fun to play and control. The Nightmare system activates whenever you kill a Maverick, not based on whatever the red highlights are
nightmare effect also kick in if you retreat from unfinished stage. Even though it's supposed to be based on the red highlight, any stage can get nightmare effect. yeah, as good as X1, am I right?
@@Skallva at least in X1, they make it a lot more convenient to play the later stage, unlike X6 where the nightmare effect make backtracking so frustrating, which is the complete opposite of what backtracking supposed to be. Heck, X5 is so bad when it comes to backtracking (duff mcwhalen stage, anyone?) but at least it doesn't piss me off to no end.
Your love for the x series shows in your videos, and I truly appreciate the effort you've put into making them. These x videos have been helping keep me excited to play the legacy collection after work every night.
The presentation in this video is unseen. I really liked the rewind scene when Zero shows up in the end, and the whole video just goes backwards super fast. That was amazing! xD
A big problem with the Falcon Armor in this game is how it was balanced. In X5, the narrow range of the charge shot was almost never a problem because most of the enemies had huge hurtboxes. In X6, many if not most of the enemies, namely the DNA viruses, have tiny hurtboxes, so the Falcon Armor’s piercing charge shot misses far more often than it should. Next, removing flight may have made sense, but that air dash is ridiculously slow and is completely overshadowed by the Blade Armor’s Mach Dash. If I were to rebalance/redesign the game, I’d actually do the following: 1. Make the Falcon Armor charge shot three arrows in a spread pattern. Alia said she had enabled the armor to charge special weapons so why not upgrade the buster too? 2. Increase the speed of the air dash and let X dash in any of the 8 directions or even hover for half a second after a dash jump to cancel momentum. This additional mobility option would give the Falcon Armor some much needed pros over the Blade Armor’s Mach Dash. 3. For lore reasons, I’d remove Zero altogether, and instead make X’s Blade Armor play more like Zero, complete with the unique special moves. The Mach Dash can stay as is. There is no charging anything with this armor, just good old fashioned saber swinging plus maybe the uncharged X Buster. The Blade Armor would actually be more true to its name this way. 4. Shadow Armor can remain as is.
“It’s the final countdown!!” Damn I thought I was the only one who noticed that 😂. Love your point of view for this. I loved this more than X4 for some nostalgic stupid reason but yeah it’s broken and half-baked. An f*** Blaze Heatnix as per usual!
A very good review. I myself just recently FINALLY finished X6 for the first time on the MMX Legacy Collection 2 after putting off Gate's Laboratory 2 for almost a YEAR (believe it or not, it wasn't the bullshit jump that did it, as I got the Hyperdash and Jumper parts combination to pull the Shadow Armor jump off surprisingly without the Giga Attack exploit, it was because Gate kicked my ass so hard when I got past it that it killed my motivation to try it again). Funnily, I did it yesterday, and I didn't find your review until shortly afterwards. I can still remember why I wanted to play X6 in the first place. After I completed X4, I was turned off of playing X5 because the RNG elements really didn't click with what I liked from the Mega Man series, and I was intrigued enough after seeing reviews of X6 to see if the difficulty (both fake and legitimate) was really all that. I even went so far as to look up guides to get an idea of what I would need to do (mostly figuring out where the Reploids with the most valuable parts were), and then I jumped in. I admit, I loved the game first starting out. I liked the presentation, didn't really mind the Japanese voice acting, and the intro stage was pretty cool. The translation was definitely a sticking point, because I understand both "proper English" and "broken English" enough to get what they were saying and I could see a decent, even great story underneath it. I liked Gate as a villain, and the Investigators had surprisingly intriguing backstories, and I loved how Alia was actually given some development and backstory alongside implications of being a fighter herself since she admits she was behind destroying at least two of them (guess they were foreshadowing her playability as a bonus character in X8). I accepted and even relished the difficulty, seeing it as something I could push past, and running through the stages for the first time gave me a hell of a rush as I tried to find and save every Reploid I could. I even unlocked Zero as soon as possible so I could get the full experience, and my fun only increased from there as I kicked High Max's ass and started farming Dynamo for more souls to upgrade both of them. I think it was only around reaching Gate's Laboratory that I started to really reach burnout with the game's difficulty and its flaws. Replaying levels searching for Reploids and collectibles alongside frantically trying to save them from Nightmare Viruses were a big contributing factor as the novelty of the stages wore off and I started growing annoyed with the gimmicks, the areas and enemies that were total bullshit, and the Nightmare Phenomenon. It was Gate Stage 2 that it hit its peak and I was more concerned with just pushing through it so I wouldn't have to do it again than relishing a challenge. And yet, despite it all, I admit I still like the game on some level, though perhaps that's more because I see what it could be than what it is. I would never recommend it to anyone save those who want to have a challenging/frustrating experience or intended to play every X game anyways. It makes me feel only disappointment rather than hatred. And perhaps this is controversial, while I'm not happy with how the game turned out, I am happy it exists at all, if only for the fact that the Zero and ZX series, my two favorites Mega Man sub-series, wouldn't exist as they do without X6. Considering I wasn't a fan of X5's endings and what their implications would have been for the Zero series (particularly X going full-on dictator Zero would have to kill in the original plans), I don't really have personal vitriol for what it did to the chronology of the series, only that it was a rushed mess that should have had more time given to it so the blow would have hurt less.
I still prefer X6 over X7. At least with X6 I feel like I am playing the Beta build of the game. With X7, it feels like an Alpha not even fit for demo purposes within the company itself.
I recently just stopped playing this mess after the awful fire wall rising under the broken bridge at gate 1. At times you have to ask yourself "are you having fun? If not, will you have fun afterwards? If not then just turn the damn machine off and do something else." Don't ever marathon the X series like I just tried to. There's only pain and frustration. X3 has that awful vertical obstacle course after you beat sigma 2, X5's random outcomes based on luck, and X6 is nothing but misery. We don't talk about X7 but X8, whoo boy...wait till you get to the final area in the game before the final bosses.
@@lemone630 yeah I used to get through it quite well many years back but having only a few lives and no partner for that segment (even on easy my patience can only go so far), one little poke and boom back to the beginning you go. its truly worthy of the last level in the X series and imo, IS spike walled man canonized.
I always viewed X6 as the epilogue to the X series; it’s a broken game that had great ideas that were executed poorly, but it still fits within canon if you ignore some things here n there, whereas X7, X8 & Command Mission seem to go off into a separate timeline
ironicly MMX8 has a theme in it close to the end of it that appeard to be existing in MMZ1 and does trying to fix some narrative driftoffs, so its somewhat natural to see it as a prequel to Zero 1.
And I've come full circle now. This was the first video I saw of yours and I loved it so much, I had to support you on Patreon then go back into your archives and see everything else. Now I've seen it again and just find myself amazed you don't have more subs. If I could transfer mine to you, I would. I just shitpost and my schedule is quite irregular. I don't deserve the fans, you do.
To explain the confusing nightmare effects: You head to a level and after leaving a stage a certain amount (1,2, or 3) of levels will be affected. The only way to change the effect is to visit a different stage which changes the effect for that level and leaving that one. Example: if you go to ground scaravich and leave, blocks or whatever appears in shield Sheldon's level. If you head to commander yanmark stage and leave, it would change to those pointless flies for laser institute. (And obviously some of the others)
That doesn't always work though. Sometimes I go to either yanmark or metal shark, get a game over or just leave, go back to the previous stage. Even after 5 or even 6 times, the nightmare refuses to move locations and sticks entirely to the incompleted stage
The times where it plays have both X and Zero on the scene, correct? The fact that you would likely answer "yes" indicates that it's supposed to be a theme for both, not one or the other.
Goes back? I think you mean is the only game to do that. X1-X3 had no warning screen when a boss appears, and X4 and X5 had the klaxon blaring five times. X7 and X8 had an alarm, yes, but with a narrator saying *"WARNING"* twice. The Zero had a normal alarm with that blared three times, and the ZX series had two separate alarms that blared only twice.
One of the reasons MegaMan X is so amazing is that even a casual like myself can beat the game with zero capsule upgrades. Yes, that includes not having the dash either. My next challenge is not only no capsules but not heart tanks. Maybe after that I will try no collectables at all. As you said in the video, the upgrades in that game enhance things rather than gate them.
X6 clearly had a great blueprint to build from X5, my personal favorite of the whole MM franchise despite the amount of flaws it has. X6 has a great plot, great gameplay, amazing musics, makes Alia more than just Navi Bot and make all 8 "Investigators" have a history with her,... if it was in the oven for around 4 months or more, this game could have been a masterpiece, but history isn't like that. I hate this game with a passion because it could have been great, some hate X7 more I get it but the 1st impression of X7 is just dogsht, X6 has an outstanding impression but nothing lives up to that 1st 5 minutes again. Despite that, I still respect X6, it caused the Zero Story to be rewritten which was even more powerful than the original script.
oh wow the time jump from the x5 video to this one. you really did take your time on this. and i can tell from the length, this is quite the dive. I went in, marathoning this whole playlist today, Oct 12th 2021 thinking I'd see reviews of 7 and 8 by the end but hot damn these are all great. I'm hoping I don't have to wait years more for the X7 and X8 ones tho :P
I can admit that objectively X6 is a worse game than X7, but i still enjoy it more than X7 which is just a slog the whole way thru for me, I will take the broken mess over the technically more sound game any day, tho if I'm wanting to have fun I usually hit X2 or 3 honesty
Same here. X6 is a hot mess but I can actually enjoy the game with some of the good things it introduced. X7 is just sooooooooooo boring to me. Slow and while it has "some" better level design for the most part. Its just not as fun compared to X6 for me.
X7 is just boring. The worst games ever made are the ones that get no emotional reaction out of the player; essentially failing to achieve even the bare minimum standard of entertainment.
You’re wrong on a little detail about running through Gate’s Fortress with the Shadow Armour. Provided you’re high enough on the platform you jump off of, it’s possible to make it with the speedster and hyper dash parts, but without the giga attack. Though I agree it’s still unreasonably difficult.
I just realized that X6 could've been the perfect opportunity to introduce Axl as this "Mysterious Hunter". Just have Gate be the "Professor" Red and his force are always talking about and it would fit. 😎
I see where your coming at, I use to love this game growing but even back then for me it was rough around the edges, now 8 years later I can safely say that this game is…pretty bad, it’s amazing in some parts like I still love nightmare mother, it’s nostalgic for me so it’s kinda hard to hate the nightmare mother boss fight, but the game as a whole is kinda garbage
First: awesome work mate. Your video looks amazing! so much love for this game! Second: I agree with the fact that it is hard and broken. But no, it isn't a bad game. Too hard, very hard but I enjoyed it so much! Btw I don't think this is canon. Keiji Inafune doesn't wanted to work on this (He just made characters). He was working on MMZero after X5 with "that" ending. I appreciate your works so much!!!
I really do hope to see you do X6 tweaks, I like your reviews a lot better than J's or retropolis Zone, and I absolutely adore their stuff. I hope you enjoy it because I found x 6 weeks to fix most but sadly not all of the issues in the game. I do seriously believe it brings the game up to a standard of Excellence, but not the standard of Excellence to be clear. There were just some things tweaking wouldn't fix
I forgot no note, more specifically the fact that the whole thing can be turned on off and adjusted you don't just have to go with the specific sleep you can take the tweaks you need and leave the ones you don't. For example making parts available earlier on and removing the useless reploids and stuff like that.
the opening level of this game track music, made me fall in love with the game very very quickly plus zeros new moves and X with zero's old saber sword in his hand made me love the game even more
I’m not sure what’s worse, passing a kidney stone or trying beat Mega Man X6 as X, & I know this from experience They both cause the same level of mental anguish, one causes physical pain & the other one lasts 2 to 3 times longer than the other
Thank you. I never, EVER, understood how people could say that X7 is worse than X6. X7 might be boring, might even be bad... but at least it doesn't have downright broken level design
@setsers1 Fair criticisms, but I don't believe the 3D parts are what ruined the game. For me, it would be the story, the slow pacing, X's character assassination, and the enemy placement. The rescuable Reploids and bullet sponge enemies are criticisms I have, but the rest of the game for me is tame in comparison to X6. Another reason I prefer X7 is because they removed the abysmal Nightmare Phenomenon.
Good video! I was excited to see it posted. As someone who's never played the game, I was a little confused once you transitioned to Zero as I didn't understand how you got him. But, that's just some feedback. Looking forward to 7!
Great review, but 2 things 1. In heatnix's stage used the falcon armors giga attack it destroys the the nightmare snake very easily and 2. The nightmare only cares about stages you've played so if you want to get the spotlight effect gone for turtle's just go to Sheldon's stage first. thanks and enjoy your day
I'm only halfway, so idk if Trav covers it, however, if you want to experience X6, as a curiosity, but don't want pain too much, there is a mod that makes it much more bearable, it's easy to find and patch, popup on Duckstation (Or you're PSone if you're a dork like me), it's, it's still not good, but you won't suffer too much for the curiosity. Doesn't really excuse the game but yeah. Also this is bad, but I would play vanilla X6 over X7, I just can't stand the feel of that game, I think they're equally bad, but X6 still does have the good physics (its weird to say physics in a game without physics, it's just, the way it feels)
I know this is a few months out from the review, but I should point the nightmare effects *do not* dissapear from one level, just because you triggered nightmare effects for different levels. The red on each stage? It's just for the stages that will get affected by the level you were just in, it doesn't mean that they are the only stages with a nightmare effect in them. To use Rainy Turtloid as an example, you might've had a few stages in between Mijinion and Turtloid, but the darkness effect still remained because you went into Mijinion at some point in your playthrough. The only way to cancel that out? Go to a stage that gives a different nightmare effect to the one you want to go into (in this case, Shield Sheldon) and *then* the darkness will be replaced. That's what the game means when it says "red = *changes*," because it means what levels have changed since you were last on the choose level screen, not what stages are currently are under the nightmare effect. It's just that "changes" is a very vague way of wording it and makes X6 more frustrating and confusing than it really should be.

I feel like that's a reasonable crotic though, either update everything or update nothing
May Duff Mcwhalen rest in peace
Along with the bangers such as i.d.e.a, moonlight and the answer
(Admittedly the American x5 intro is better)
Exactly, it's a mess
That's pretty much the only reason X6 is only my second favorite X game. If it had been playtested more and had a better translation it probably would have been one of the best games of all time. Yes I like X6, it's a lot like X3 where it's hard at the start, but by the end you're on a power trip and it's really satisfying

I don’t remember if there were mistranslations in the rest of the cutscene dialogue, but robot is not a mistranslation.

As someone who is starting to learn to use game engines, the misaligned background is a mood.
Basicly, there's a limit of one Nightmare Effect per stage.
@@robertlupa8273 Yes. Once a stage is hit with the Nightmare, it will never not be infected. All a matter of what the active effect is.
Yep, I've seen other reviewers complain about how confusing and random the effects are, but this is all it is. Nightmare effects are "sticky" and red highlighting is just what was most recently changed/activated.
@@0Impeesa the main issue is that the game itself doesn't explain it well cause it's basically told "red is nightmare"
@@0Impeesa Just because it's been figured out and explained doesn't make it not confusing
It's "Hell Sigma."
Finally, I wanted to say that, for a time, Mega Man X6 was my definitive least favorite/most hated video game I had ever played in my life. This game has no good reason to exist, and I have no good reason to know it as well as I do.
how long did it take for you to type this?
Might wanna space out the text, as it can be hard to read.
Even J said that this is "The Definitive X6 Review" and he is godamn right
The mysterious voice calling zero the strongest robot is actually correct.
@2d fighter fan X is the first Reploid, while Zero is a traditional robot.
X and Zero are both robots.
@order-sol's last brain cell X can GROW stronger, Zero was supposed to BE stronger, and the fact he gets special ability from bosses, instead of weapons, makes me thing that his setup is to have adaptative abilities against whatever is being thrown at him as part of the programming
the thing with how he basically got the part of programming that causes the maverik virus to be punched out of him makes me believe that it was contained in the component that would have made him a RobotMaster (as the virus would have somewhat caused other robots to malfunction in manner advantageous for him), with the latter classic game pointing thoward a combined use of EvilEnergy data, Roboenza and the GearSystem to breack the limits that RobotMasters had

A couple notes for X6 for anyone looking to play, or anyone who just doesn't know about these:
The Guard Shell glitch works with X!
Quick charge is good, but jumper is downright required to beat this game through the final stages
@@The_Natalist Only as X is it required, and he can bypass that requirement with the Blade and Shadow armors anyway
I love all the extra armor, collecting all the rescues, secret side bosses and the sick customization x7 and 8 changed the formula to much for me
x1 wants to speak to you
X1 and MHX isn't really the best but it's great
This game came out when I was 11. I LOVED that awesome intro. I was kinda sad when the original opening was removed in future MMX collections.
i guess im the only one actively love this game then, the controls are great, we have a stronger motivation to rescue reploids because their lives are at the edge this time (and very rewarding if you rescued them), the level design is pushing it's limits to see how extreme a 2d side scroller action game can be, it's true there are some questionable / cheap design in specific area, but overall it has one of the best x armor in the entire X series, and Zero's saber combat just awesome, with the extreme level design it is a test to the player and it also shows if a boss character wants you die, they will do everything to make you die as hard as possible before face to face.
Thank you so much for making this, it is incredibly appreciated and we can't wait to see more~

"Wakey wakey, it's time for schoo!"
Maybe it's the fact that your voice cracks up that cracked me up.
I’ve never seen your channel before but I clicked to see X6 bashing
Weil just stole the original body because of how powerful it was
but i get what you mean
@@justarandomguy9577 yeah that was the plot after x6 happened (the one we got). Post x5 mmz plot was to have ciel find zero broken torso and fix him up to fight against x if i remember correctly. In that case the original plot would have no weil/omega and x being so out of character that it was worse than x7's x.
@@lequanghuy5126 honestly, same boat
Besides the battling yourself trope was a dope part of the story and of course the heroic moment in zero4
Imo, Copy X replacing X makes Zero 1 hit a lot less hard imo.

Is actually a pretty sick name for Player.
Exactly. That's why I like the tweaks version. It makes x6 a really good experience imo
X6 had potential of being one of, If not, the best Megaman X game
The soundtrack is fire, the stages had more unique ideas/design than X5's stages, X's new armors are fun to use, Zero's new sprites and slashes looks great, bosses designs are fantastic, stages had alternate routes and lots of ways to reach the final stages
It's such a shame that had a rushed development, destroying the most important cores to a Megaman X game: Level Design and Balance, both completely broken
It's a game I feel bad for being such a mess
I actually disagree with X6 being complete trash or even a bad game. I find it to be the only good game in a series of fantastic games.
Prophiens. Disagreed with you there. It's far from good nor fantastic. It could've been if it put more potential into it. But they didn't.

i will say i really like x6's artstyle looks really pleasing to me
Really? Because to me it looks like dog shit compared to X4
I don't think X6 has a bad artstyle. UNLIKE THE NEXT GAME

@@turrican3839Salamander 2 is right up there as a game that looks rough using that style and this is someone who likes pre render graphics

As much of a pain as this hame could be I've been itching to replay this again and this review may push it over the edge. Thanks brah
This game has my favorite soundtrack, favorite armors, cool villains and favorite playable zero, yet it’s one of the worst X games I’ve played
Yes, the game had great ideas and a cool aesthetic, but thanks to the rushed development the most important things to make a Megaman X game work: Level Design and Balance are all over the place
Some fans defend X6 saying that some problems comes from using the same engine from X4, but the thing is X4 and even X5, had a good enough Level Design that it didn't showed those problems in the first place
Volt Kraken (Squid Adler) had BS lvl design at the start but outside of that... its good
@ayrtonjoga I'm not saying it's better than X6 because of it, in my opinion, they're both equally bad, but the infuriating level design and Nightmare Phenomenon is what really makes me hate X6.

I've grinded this game a lot over the years and I don't think I've ever seen a game utterly fail at comprehensive level design. Everything I know about this game is from multiple playthroughs. I still play because the PS1 X Engine is so sickeningly fun to play and control. The Nightmare system activates whenever you kill a Maverick, not based on whatever the red highlights are
You just need to finish the stage to activate the effect its not like X1 and X3 where is activated by defeating a boss
nightmare effect also kick in if you retreat from unfinished stage. Even though it's supposed to be based on the red highlight, any stage can get nightmare effect.
yeah, as good as X1, am I right?
@@Takato2527
To be fair, that gimmick also sucked in X1, albeit for the opposite reasons.
It'd be incredible if they made X9 in the style of PS1 games. I'd kill for another game like X4.

If I were to rebalance/redesign the game, I’d actually do the following:
Just a few days ago i watched your amazing X5 review. KEEP GOING MAN this channel deserves more subs
even though this game is bad it has a special place in my heart since it was the first PS1 game i ever played.
Exactly the same here bro
Yeah, love this game. It's definitely harder than the others. Which is generally what I look for in Megaman X games.
I'm gonna say what I said on J's Reviews on this game a couple years ago. This game should have hid itself while it repairs itself.
It would have been sweet to see a wrecked Guts Tank as the 1st boss
I still prefer X6 over X7. At least with X6 I feel like I am playing the Beta build of the game. With X7, it feels like an Alpha not even fit for demo purposes within the company itself.
34:26 Hi to you too. I got you bro.

The shadow armor is literally shadow man from mega man 3.
So when X equips it he becomes:

I recently just stopped playing this mess after the awful fire wall rising under the broken bridge at gate 1. At times you have to ask yourself "are you having fun? If not, will you have fun afterwards? If not then just turn the damn machine off and do something else." Don't ever marathon the X series like I just tried to. There's only pain and frustration. X3 has that awful vertical obstacle course after you beat sigma 2, X5's random outcomes based on luck, and X6 is nothing but misery. We don't talk about X7 but X8, whoo boy...wait till you get to the final area in the game before the final bosses.
Honestly, X8's last stage ain't that bad
@@lemone630 yeah I used to get through it quite well many years back but having only a few lives and no partner for that segment (even on easy my patience can only go so far), one little poke and boom back to the beginning you go. its truly worthy of the last level in the X series and imo, IS spike walled man canonized.
49:36 I like that the music is a remix of X1 and X2 first form sigma
I remember buying this game from GameStop and returning it the next day.
To explain the confusing nightmare effects:
You head to a level and after leaving a stage a certain amount (1,2, or 3) of levels will be affected.
51:37
ACKSHUALLY that would be X's theme, also known as Variable X.
The times where it plays have both X and Zero on the scene, correct? The fact that you would likely answer "yes" indicates that it's supposed to be a theme for both, not one or the other.
X6 also goes back to making the WARNING klaxon blare eight times where previous games had fewer. This just makes you wait longer. I hate it.
Huh
@@ThatTravGuyHuh
I am sorry, HE HID HIMSELF WHILE HE TRYED TO REPAIR HIMSELF?!?!?!?!?
Mistranslation. It was meant to say he found a dr light capsule
@Narnia Games Well it's their opinion.
Got to rewatch this video for the 50th time before the X7 video comes out today
You’re wrong on a little detail about running through Gate’s Fortress with the Shadow Armour. Provided you’re high enough on the platform you jump off of, it’s possible to make it with the speedster and hyper dash parts, but without the giga attack. Though I agree it’s still unreasonably difficult.
The opening stage theme is gorgeous.
1, 4, and 8 are really the best of the series. Yes, I like 8.
I like 8 too, for making Axl feel somewhat up to par with X and Zero
1 and 4 are so bland, 8 is the goat
@@amso7169 X1 is bland? What in the unholy fuck
I personally thought 8 was ok, but I can see why you’d consider it one of the best!
I LOVE X8!!! Super underrated, I just love the voice acting and story. X1 is my favorite, X8 being a close second.
Hey you're that guy from the race! I've been watching your reviews since august and I've been omega hyped for this review.
the opening level of this game track music, made me fall in love with the game very very quickly plus zeros new moves and X with zero's old saber sword in his hand made me love the game even more
I’m not sure what’s worse, passing a kidney stone or trying beat Mega Man X6 as X, & I know this from experience
They both cause the same level of mental anguish, one causes physical pain & the other one lasts 2 to 3 times longer than the other
I remember playing this game and not being able to beat any of the levels
Takes some practice
You trash!
Playing throught the game...i realized that playing the levels is like putting a nail below your nail of your feet, and kicking a wall with full force.
Thank you. I never, EVER, understood how people could say that X7 is worse than X6. X7 might be boring, might even be bad... but at least it doesn't have downright broken level design
Because it's a *_3D_* game. We hold a very high standard for those.
And they kept the reploid mechanic, which _derails_ the flow and gameplay.
I’m not looking forward to replaying X6. I take it you’ll be doing X7 and X8 next. And silly, it’s not Nightmare Snake, it’s called “Donut!”

Trav: "The abundance of pre-Columbian meso-American architecture..."
Game: Literal machinery in the walls
Tsoukalos: "Aliens."
I talk about the Tweaks project near the end
