I can say this without reservation: Eternal is a fantastic game. Every single problem with 2016 has been fixed: every weapon has its own niche and is relevant for the entirety of the game (even the Shotgun is still decent), the story is not obtrusive to the gameplay and is even climactic sometimes. The new additions to the gameplay are all great and help differentiate the game from its predecessor. Even the environments are more varied while still retaining the great level design! It's nice to be satisfied and even surprised by a sequel again.
The shotgun is a must use, if you only use the rifle to kill weak points, you cant kill, like, 3 cacodemons. You must use the shotgun, you can destroy weak points AND kill cacodemons. And it is 1 of 2 weapons that gets weak demons into stagger state without exploding them imediately (aka ssg blast)

@@royalfilmakingdynasty1910 | You could call it a soft reboot, akin to how "Splinter Cell: Conviction" was technically a sequel but it overhauled the franchise's gameplay. The new "Doom" games are technically sequels to "Doom 64", but the gameplay has been drastically overhauled and modernised (for the better, thankfully).
I love the foreshadowing of the icon of sin right from the first time you boot up the game, with the main menu theme being an updated icon of sin theme even with the whistling
Doom Eternal really did feel different from Doom 2016. Especially after playing them back-to-back. I like many others, had to adjust to ammo limitations, armor management, and more frantic movement. Didn’t help that my first playthrough was on Nightmare. But when you finally understand how this game works, I think Eternal easily trumps 2016 in terms of gameplay. Then again, the fact that the super shotgun has a grappling hook would have made me bump this game above 2016 for that reason alone.
I agree overall. Eternal feels absolutely soul crushing until you learn the new Doom Dance but once it clicks Eternal might be the most intelligent shooter I've ever seen. Or rather it demands intelligence from the player in a way that I've rarely seen while still giving you the insane power fantasty if you can earn it. Eternal is imo the far superior game in terms of quality however the lack of Snapmap leave Eternal ironically limited compared to the endless content 2016 offered. The rare case where I think quantity might just beat out quality as a lot of Eternal's new features can be replicated in Snapmap, turning 2016 into a slightly janky hybrid. Look up Arch Revival to see Eternal maps and features remade in 2016. End of the day though both games are 10/10 in their own regard.
When the Slayer takes the Plasma Rifle from the soldier, what he did is take its ammo. That’s why whatever skin you’re using (assuming you’re using a different one from the default) stays but the one he takes from the soldier is the default. He took the gun to take its ammo not the use the gun itself. He probably dropped the gun during the cutscene right before the elevator.
Kind of a late fun fact, but he actually keeps the gun if you somehow didn't bother to take it back in Exultia, so it's kinda like the dev's way of making sure you have it.
@@norrecvizharan1177 It makes sense, they let you get both mods for the Combat Shotgun before they introduce the Arachnatron so they make sure you have the sticky bomb. The devs at Id Software are all around awesome.
@@poopybuttguy5523 I'd totally recommend using the gun more though, honestly, because it's a really effective fodder killer, and the microwave beam is very good at pinning larger demons down, but that's just my thoughts. Hope you're having plenty of fun with the game though.
I think the rip and tear line makes sense because that was the sentinels' chant "kar en tuk" in the arena and over time the slayer learns their language which is why we can understand them in english.
I think you're one of the best to review these games. You not only legitimately understand why things were done in the game, but you also understand the story! That's almost rare for reviewers
I love this game. DOOM 2016 was already my favorite game of all time, and Eternal replaced it. It's a huge upgrade in nearly every single way and 20x more fun and rewarding because of the added depth in it's gameplay.
Glad someone finally understands the lore that was given through the base campaign. Literally no one cared to think about/understood the story at first, even though it was quiet easy to figure out.
Finally! Someone who knows first person platforming is a good thing. Though Eternal’s is more like Sonic P-06 (specifically that version as it’s gameplay is fixed) in first person instead of Mario. The only Mario thing are the spinning fire bars so saying it’s like Mario is like comparing the exploration in Classic Doom to Mazewar, or the realistic level design in Duke Nukem 3D to Tekwar.
I watched this video and then looked at your subscriber count. I did not expect that. You seriously deserve at least a million, honestly. Your content seriously made me think you had that much. Hope you eventually reach that goal someday :D
I LOVE the Marauder, the reason I see him as hard is that the game is like music, it has a tempo. The Marauder has a tempo too but it has its own tempo. So its like the game is a band and the Marauder is like the drummer just decided he wants to play jazz every now and then
Exactly this. The Marauder doesn't fit the rest of the game. He just throws off the rhythm of the combat by making you play wonky marauder combat puzzles instead of high-flying pewpewpew. Boring and wonky. Then they made Satan a Mega Mecha Marauder with Extra Dullness Sauce and I just quit the Satan fight out of disgust.
@@Quztuk wonky combat puzzles? Literally all you have to do is stay moderately close to him and shoot when his eyes glow green. Super easy, but adds challenge because he has a different tempo to the enemies around him
@@JasperBun Yeah, he's easy, but he's annoying and he doesn't fit. Which makes him wonky. The Marauder isn't a threat, barring shenanigans, but he is unfun. Which is much worse.
13:02 The intrinsic value you speculating may be right. I feel it's symbolic for Valen succeeding in resurrecting his kid, at the cost of the kid being trapped in the icon of sin. Literally saying "You won, but at what cost"
I personally love the new art style change. 2016 looked more like doom 3, pain killer and killing floor than classic doom. I liked it but it didnt reallly "look" like doom to me. Eternal however looks like a modern day interpretation of doom 2. Somthing ive wanted to see since i was a kid. I love how the modeled everything after the original sprites. This is how a modern interpretation of doom should look. Embracing the classics with some modernization. This game might be up there with doom 2 as my favorite doom game!
I didn't exactly convey it well 'cause I thought of the Name for the video well after the review was finished. I tried to imply that the divisiveness was the Troublesome part - Denuvo (at the time) being a problem, folks complaining that it was too much of a departure from the classic formula, etc etc.
@@ThatTravGuy Oh yeah, Denuvo. I had this game pre-ordered in part because they were advertising it as not having Denuvo. Then it came out and people realized Bethesda were lying and it did have Denuvo (Anti-Tamper/DRM, that is). I refunded my purchase instead of playing the game. Then things got even worse when they forced in Denuvo Anti-Cheat. They eventually removed Anti-Cheat, stopped lying about Anti-Tamper, and I finally picked the game (and the season pass or whatever) on sale late in 2020. And even then, the game is full of bugs, so troubled still applies. Hell, still troubled now, with everyone upset about TAG1 nerfs, and TAG2 also having more bugs and a weak as hell final boss.

A bit of a fun fact: Olivia Pierce, the main antagonist from Doom 2016, makes a cameo in Eternal. In Nekravol Part 1, after the final arena fight that ends with two Doom Hunters, you have to knock down a statue and jump through a hole in the ground caused by said statue. That statue is of Olivia Pierce. I would have loved to watch Trav Guy say sth like, "Oh hey, it's Olivia from Doom 2016! Aww poor Olivia... all that hard work and sacrifice and all you get is getting killed by the Doom Slayer and a stupid statue. Serves you right, ya bitch." XD

12:50 if I’m being honest, I always thought it sounded more like the opening guitar riff from “One”. But hearing it more clearly now, I think you’re right.
25:00 The issue with the marauder is not that he's hard, it's that he changes the gameplay style in a way the game doesn't train you for. The game trains you to get close and personal, to be aggressive, keep moving forwards and being aware of your surroundings, quite often just doing what you believe is right rather than think is right (heart over thinking). The marauder is the opposite: While he's active he needs to contain your full attention, he can't be dealt with via pure aggression, he needs to be taken out methodically with you moving BACKWARDS while you aren't aware of your surroundings. A lot of people just don't adapt to that, especially in a situation when you're surrounded by other demons that require attention and aggression.
I've been waiting for this review, and you did not disappoint. Nice job! And yeah, this has effectively replaced Doom 64 as my favorite doom game and is now one of my favorite games of all time. I have no idea how they can top this.

I'm actually really happy I found this video, because I was looking for an explanation on some of the lore (i.e. why do people think Samuel Hayden is some sort of angel, how Doom's 1 thru 64 connect to 2016) for Eternal. And I gotta say, the events of the game make more sense now.
The one thing I choose to let myself be smug over is that in 2016 I actually guessed that Samuel Hayden was the Seraphim for completely the wrong reasons because I had a completely BONKERS theory involving time travel that ended up being wrong in ever single way except for that one part I accidentally got right.
Yes. Good. Honestly I couldn't imagine a better time frame for the game to come out, at the exact moment people suddenly had a shit ton of free time, DOOM Eternal descended.... So did Animal Crossing, then the best crossover to never happened was pushed into pop culture.
Hey trav, Another cool way to kill the marauder, and the fastest way is shooting an ice bomb over him, this will make him pull his shield up and track the bomb, this lets you use lock on rockets, and he dies really quick to lock on rockets

On Doom 64: Lost Levels: This port was made by Nightdive studios, of which Samuel Villarreal, or as he's known in the Doom community "Kaiser," is part of. Kaiser is most well known for making Doom64 EX, so this port is actually extremely similar, to the point where the Doom64 EX level editor is completely compatible with this port. The "Lost Levels" are all new and made by Kaiser himself. Also, the lack of mouselook is to ensure authenticity to the original game, just like how the new Doom ports also lack this "modern" feature.

Fun fact.on the first level i thought that the kahn makyr sounded like assaj ventress from the clone wars, i googled it and she is! Tl;dr: kahn makyr is voiced by ventress
Serious question here: Samuel Hayden specifically said the souls are harvested from the human body and the remaining body becomes the demons the slayer fights. So what humans make the cyberdemon or hell knight? What specific actions need to be taken in the physical world that causes someone to become an archvile? Can someone answer this?
The codexes of the game somewhat contradict what Hayden says. I believe only a select few demons are made from human husks, though which demons those are is hard to say - if I had to guess, Hellknights are at least one of them. But no, I'm fairly certain it's only a small handful of demons that are actually human.

@@ThatTravGuy My guess is that what you did and looked like in life is what determines the demon created from the body. Zombies and Imps may have come from the more average citizens, Hell Knights could be the more rough and tumble type folks, Carcasses are pretty chunky and he does camp quite a lot so maybe he was once your typical overweight beer dad, and Archviles could have been more politically powerful people given how they boss demons around. In terms of massive or misshapen demons like Cyberdemons, Cacos, and Arachnotrons, they may simply be spawns of hell itself. Monsters like the Titans couldn't possibly come from human bodies, and we know Jekkad is it's own world so some of the demons must simply be it's natural inhabitants. They've gotta come from somewhere, and sometimes the wickedness of mankind just isn't enough.

The story and lore pickups also help you get an even better idea of how powerful the doom slayer actually is
It's a solid game but it definitely doesn't fix anything technically.

"And the shotgun has a grappling hook, because this IS a good game, after all" -videogamedunkey, 2020

This glowing review certainly conveys "masterpiece", but where exactly is the "troubled"?

Something tells me Trav will love The Ancient Gods 1
He did.

Spoiler: whiplashes and archvilles are maykrs
