This screenplay is excellent. Anyone who thinks there are silly, non-historical elements just don't get it. I think humans have always been vain and stupid. I think gender relations go back to cave-man days! This movie is brilliantly showing the King as just a human man. And Korda was famous for portraying females as intelligent, perceptive, and independent- despite so-called cultural norms. Great story telling is timeless. We see the truth, even if it is wrapped up in Hollywood splendor.

He was one of the finest actors ever were to grace the silver screen. Acting was his passion, however his endeavors on screen were a blend of his personal artistry welded a science in study molded thru strict discipline.. He carried it off to a tee actually becoming whom he played... bringing history to life for whatever present day granted such a glorious reunion with the past.
I greatly admire his performances, whether the hero or fiend, a rarity for myself who usually does not care to see the switch from dark to Light in a favorite actor.

When work was dried up he would walk the streets of Scarborough, if memory serves, chap on doors and read passages from the bible to residents. To keep him "match fit" so to speak. It can easily be argued that he is the greatest British actor of all time. And his shot at directing is a masterpiece.@@kingdomfreedom8323

@@glorialange6446 I agree Gloria. I've always loved the history of the Tudors. I think it's because so much happened during the reign of Henry VIII, didn't it? And what happened changed England forever. He broke with Rome and founded the Church of England so he could divorce Katherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. He had Sir Thomas Moore executed because Thomas refused to sign the document saying that Henry VIII was the Head of the Church. And then, after only 3 years of marriage to Anne, he had her beheaded because she didn't give him the son he so desperately wanted. It's ironic that Henry VIII was so determined to have a son considering that his daughter Elizabeth I was such a brilliant Queen, ruthless but still brilliant. It was an amazing period in British history.

The real story is fascinating. Laughton is the best to portray the King by far. Imagine having to marry a man with a huge ulcerated sore in his leg (early injury- he fell from a Horse). The sore never healed, and the rotted flesh smelled so bad that the Court had to burn spices and use perfume constantly. The Director Korda's brother Vincent did the sets- great stuff! TY.

Actually I believe this is inaccurate. If it was an open wound it would have contracted an infection. I believe it was a cyst. It could be on the knee, calf, inner groin, tail bone.
It is usually a closed looking boil. It fills with duct fluid, blood, puss, and can get a combination of other bodily fluid like sweat…. It smells worse than a dead body. It can be smelt on a person walking around with it… an off odor. periodically it will burst to drain out. The stench is profound and ungodly. The reason for a knock your sock off smell is because the gland was a swelling packet of rotting puss and blood for days, weeks, months and even years!! It’s a match because it’s a gland and zero chances of this stuff making it to the blood stream. You can lance it as much as you want.

Good movie, but like most historical movies, it is not exactly accurate. Queen Katherine of Aragon was King Henry's wife for about 20 years and was not uninteresting. She basically led the action against an invasion while King Henry was away.
Also, first, Jane Seymour died two weeks after giving birth, so she was still alive when Henry first saw his son. And Katherine Howard was a teenager when Henry married her.
But, then, the TV series, The Tudors messed with history, too, and we should know better these days. Aside from The Tudors combining Henry's two sisters, Margaret and Mary into one and having that one marry a man neither married, at least Charles Laughton bears a resemblance to Henry.

They don't go into it in this film, but Catherine Parr came very close to losing her head also. She got too involved in Henry's affairs when it came to religion, which Henry did not approve. In the end, she had to grovel herself back into Henry's good graces, thus saving her own life. She outlived Henry by a year and eight months.

I was so happy to find this as this was the first time. I saw this movie in color and it makes it feel more alive.
One of the reasons why I love watching this movie is because different characters and different scenes have their own story and it's really funny.
From the copes in the kitchen to the people, getting everything ready for the marriage bed was funny. Then nanny as well, trying to help.
This was honestly a great movie.

Love the interaction between Charles Laughton, and his real wife, Elsa Lanchester. A marriage of more convenience than anything. In later interviews, long after Laughton's death, Lanchester confessed that in all their years of marriage together, it was never consummated. 🤣

Automobiles today are perfect and good. But in the 1930's they were exciting and interesting. Wild designs from Europe and the World. Films are the same. You cannot complain about modern GM or Toyota, but a Bugatti Type 34 or a rightous Duesenberg are works of art and beauty. Same with film. Alex Korda and Charles Laughton are just magnificent. I loved the first 20 minutes of this film. Exposition mixed with comedy and intense drama.

It's awful. I've seen color pictures from the 1930s, and photographs plenty from the 1930s-1920s-1910s-& 1900s. I saw one in Los Angeles in 1931, 2 years bwfore this film, neat variety of automobiles in different colors, beautiful fashion, gorgeous homes, orange-red taxis, and famous showcases.

The only good thing about this film is Charles Laughton as Henry V111. There wasn’t a block at Anne’s execution as she was topped with a sword. She’d have been kneeling upright. And Seymour didn’t marry the king on the same day as Anne’s execution. I could go on. I’ll leave it there.

The thing that puzzled me was that all these inaccuracies and interpretations were greenlit by a British movie board!!! You would have thought they would have been sticklers for accuracy in retelling a period of their own history! Yes, CL was great at this role, but I couldn't stop thinking that I was watching a comedic interpretation of the king's "private life."

She also was innocent of all charges but the film insinuates that she ‘wasn’t respectable’ and potentially guilty. Only Kathryn Howard (who wouldn’t have been at court in 1536) says Anne is innocent.

If it was colourised in the conventional sense of the time then they would have come along and pained each slide of film individually. So I don't think that would come into it, though it is strange. The only logical explanation I can think of is that Dye was expensive at that time in history, so most people wouldn't have colourful cloths. Or a cock up while painting the film 😂
