A film so great that 90 years later it still pleases thousands of viewers, Hitchcock of course. Superb cast led by Robert Donat, with a natural ease made for the screen, and delightful Madeleine Carroll not only a star in those years but also recognized for her heroic humanitarian efforts during WW2.

This movie is just as wonderful and exciting today as it was in 1935. Yes it departs from the book, but that does not detract from the perfection of this film. I love the colorized version!
I watched it at a theater in Houston that had an art house Cinema upstairs.... It was 1979, I snuck in after the feature Escape from Alcatraz (Eastwood)
What a beautiful old classic gem of a movie with Donat and Madeleine Carroll. A beautiful Hitchcock movie done gracefully that is funny as well as thrilling with decency, dignity and respect in sharp contrast with the movies nowadays that are full of abhorrent violence, abominable sex scenes and with no real values. Both, Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll are very good and charismatic actors.
How wonderful to see The 39 Steps presented in these lovely, almost opalescent, colours. I think Mr Hitchcock would be impressed.
Thank you so much for this colourised version of this Hitchcock classic! The original still delights audiences as it did back in 1935. Love the cameo from Miles Malleson at the end 😂
So many small, humanizing brushstrokes in this terrific film - from the very beginning.
One of my favorites was the camera lingering on Margaret, the grumpy farmer's wife, after she helps Hannay escape.
Rest in paradise ✨️ to Hitch and these stellar players ~ especially Robert Donat.
I know practically every frame of this film, having watched it countless times over the years. I'm a stickler for authenticity but, in this case, the colorization actually enhances the whole experience. It's a masterful film with so many stylish camera angles and inventive editing throughout. I will never tire of it and can now enjoy it in tasteful colour - one of the best conversions from b&w that I've seen.
I love Hitchcock and can't believe I never saw this. What an absorbing movie. Robert Donat never gets the credit he deserves even though he won an Oscar. Madeleine Carroll should have made more films in the U.S.
This is one of my favourite Hitchcock films which I have watched many times over the years. To watch it in colour is wonderful.
The final scene with the death of Mr. Memory and the long line of chorus girls behind him is one of the most beautiful shots in early Hitchcock.
The few minutes from 1:06:29 onward are a masterclass in screenwriting. Talkies back then, and for a long time after, were absolutely stuffed with stilted, proper dialogue that in no way represented how the everyman spoke. But that entire conversation is compelling and free of stilted bullshit. Not only that, but it acts as a natural builder of chemistry between the leads. It's a scene that could've been out of a movie made 40 years later, save for the odd archaic expression or perspective, and it's effortlessly entertaining.
Hitchcock's appreciation for and ability to identify a good screenplay is a massive reason why he soared as highly as he did. Bravo to everyone involved

- A truly unique masterpiece. It shows that Hitchcock had "it" already in the beginning. Great choice of actors, atmospheric 1930's ambience and a successful retroish post-colorizing - deliberately not too well done. Plot was stunning combined with "Hitchcockian" shooting with it's angles and fleeting photographic, intense moments. Outstrips most contemporary spy movies with flying colours, even today. Not only HIGHLY recommended film - it's a MUST to watch.
I just love the script! And the fact that the music is so low-key. It sure is the grand-daddy of all the genre.
And the crews worked on important b/w shadows to reduce it with this acid washed piece of crap.
Among the greats! Since you love this, ensure you see Foreign Correspondent and Saboteur.

We had The 39 Steps and Lord of the Flies in the 10th year at St. Columbas High School in New Delhi in 1973 as part our English Literature studies.
Each pupil would read 5 pages aloud in class and the homework at the end of the week was to summarise the story so far.
The best summary got an award.👏👏
One of Hitchcock's best films, beautifully constructed with excellent acting by everyone, amazing cinematography. It's even better if you're born and raised in the U.K. to get all the references and feel of the culture and the times. Kids, put your little phones away, watch this film and all Hitchcock's others.

Everyone else started a "step" behind, from his silents to Frenzy, you'll run out of fingers and toes.
Still find it amazing that when this was made , WW2 hadn’t happened yet.
Have watched this film many times so very good. The extra bonus for me is that my late husband is the image of Robert Donat. Everlasting memory for me!

One of my all time favourites, madeline was born in my neck of the woods, West Bromwich, brilliant film watch it twice a week and I never gets bored of it.
Donat is, as usual, excellent. He and Madeleine Carroll are so well matched here. This is a movie I keep coming back to, like the movie version of comfort food. But I never saw it in color. Wow! It's a whole different movie experience in color.

Robert Donat was a wonderful actor. The first film I saw him in was Goodbye Mr. Chips, he did such a fabulous job with the character of Schoolmaster Mr. Chips that I now watch everything that I see with him in it!

It is his grace, which Hitch gives to him, that is his salvation throughout the film. Rare, and nice to see expressively portrayed.
This is a very clever spy movie- leave it to Hitchcock to find a good one, plus Donat and Carroll. Long before the world had spies everywhere during WWII, this one drew on imagination. You'd think the others made about WWII would be as good, especially with tons of true stories, but most were not, IMO. Love these oldies that make you THINK! TY- great post and HD.
A bit at first was confusing but then it all made sense. Hitchcock knocked it out of the park again. Great movie !
One of my favourite films. I love the humour that Hitchcock puts into his films. I recognise the mountains. Much of the timing took place in Glencoe.
A film so great that it still pleases viewers after 90 years. Hitchcock of course, superb writing and casting -- Robert Donat with an ease made for the screen, Madeleine Carroll gorgeous and a genuine humanitarian hero during the war years.
Never tire of watching this film, whether it be this one, the Kenneth More or the Robert Powell ones. Thank you John Buchan for an excellent story.

Wikipedia notes are right: Hitchcock appears at 6:59 walking in front of the bus Hanney and "Ms Smith" catch. From memory, in North by North West he gets baulked in catching a taxi at Fifth in front of the UN offices just after the intro overture credits.

Even Buchan, the author of the original '39 Steps' - quite different from the film version - was impressed with the changes. That's the ultimate compliment.
Fwiw, the original story was a BBC broadcast in 1989. It's on YT and has an excitement all its own.
I prefer black and white. But I enjoyed this film! I can see how influential it was to the spy genre going forward. Some serious "bourne" vibes.

He was also nominated the year before for his portrayal of a poor country doctor who eventually makes good and begins to abandon his moral conscience in “The Citadel”. Another brilliant performance of his, that is a personal favorite of mine, was as a barrister in “The Winslow Boy” (1948 version). He was a wonderful actor who was hampered by ill health and crippling self doubt (I have no idea why).
The actors and acting are timeless!
This is a perfect movie. It all ends in the last scene as it opened w Mr. Memory!! Plus the plot and love story (hands grasping together finally) I cheer everytime like a lil kid Hooray!!!!

Been looking this movie up after reading the thrilling novel last year...still comparing notes...just watched the 1959 one.
Absolutely amazing movie... Proves that from whatever year, Hitchcock is THE MAN.... the ending is sensational, even today!!! Does not resemble ANY other early movie I've ever seen. Focus and color were far better than I expected. And Madeleine Carroll is a stunning beauty - with great legs. WOW. Michigan.
Carroll quit filmdom after her sister was killed in the London blitz and worked as an army nurse tending the wounded. Eisenhower was totally impressed with her.
The first of Hitchcock's blonds and far and away the most adorable (and best actress- especially enjoyed seeing her in another fabulous '30's movie- about an insurance company, yet(!): Lloyd's of London (which also introduced Tyrone Power)

Unfortunately Mr. memory didn't know what causes pip in poultry. Well, Infectious coryza is a fairly common infection of the respiratory tract in chickens. It's sometimes called roup, catarrh, pip, or IC. It is caused by the bacterium avibacterium paragallinarum, once known as haemophilus paragallinarum.
I've watched this film I don't know how many times and I never knew what causes pip in poultry. I do now! Thank you!

Classic Hitchcock film bar none, however I always liked the black and white version.

Mr. Memory was a great dramatic tool to tell the story. For the 21st century viewer the film is a bit dated but Hitch was able to convey a good story with a surprise ending.
