I enjoy both versions of "Gaslight" for different reasons. Altho' this version is perhaps a little more gruesome, but I find Charles Boyer's characterization a bit more sinister, than Anton Walbrook. He has this sneer that gives me shivers. And Angela Lansbury was also wonderful as the maid. In any event both are noteworthy and should be seen. Thanks for posting this wonderful film!
This film portrays the toxic relationship that a woman faces with her husband. In addition to being a classic, it is a way to warn those who live in a toxic relationship and do not get out in time.
@Romans828KJVI met a narcissist who was able to not accept a child he had with a girlfriend; he only considered it a real child if he had gotten married. See how crazy that is?!
Both versions have their pros & cons. Angela Lansbery (19 yo at the time!) stands out over this maid...her cockney accent and acting really transported you to the period. With Charles Boyer I had a difficult time believing Ingrid would fall in love & married him. In Hitchocks version the noisy little old lady and deaf cook added imo, texture and depth to the piece.
Bon visionnage douce nuit
I prefer Actress Angela Lansbury's sly maid to this one. This version excellent in the details of Gaslighting, the lies he weaves, expressions of mental breakdown are remarkable to second version.
(18 . VIII . 2024).
Absolutely true. The costumes are especially superior and much more accurate for the period piece. Beautiful detail. Hollywood used a more generic approach that just doesn't compete with this. I do like Charles Boyer though. And Joseph Cotten who's role was cut out of this rendition.
4:06 If anything, they should have stolen the lace .... a collar can take up to a year to make, therefore it would be an expensive trade at a dressmakers' or pawn shoppe.
This version is really much more satisfying then the more famous one with Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. The script holds together much better. The retired police inspector has a clearer role and I think the story feels more believable. 🥳
Super, thanks!

Thanks, haven't seen this for a long time. Very interesting movie, I remember someone recommended it to me when we were talking about narcissism. Isn't there another one, called Raintree County? Can't remember..
20,000£ in 1940, would inflate to 1,403,105.22£ in late August 2024 Converted to Canadian dalla, (minus the .22) would be 2,503,733.07$ Ya...20,000£. Ya, that's som'n to go insane over in 1940. According to the inflation calculator.
Did they have television in 1940? I wasn't sure when they started to sell them🤔 hopefully not during the great depression 😢 and even color and not black and white movies??

@@janellmunson8084if OP would've read the description they would've seen that this movie is AKA "A Strange Case of Murder". This is an earlier (1940) British adaptation. The more well known/popular version of "Gaslight " was made in 1944 w/Ingrid Bergman n Angela Lansbury, which is what I'm assuming OP is referring to as the "original". However, imo it's kind of like comparing apples n oranges here lol..I don't think the channel was trying to imply that this was the original version, just a different one if that makes sense. Hope that helps 😊
He even looks like my ex husband. And he has the same cold, arrogant, and cruel voice. There are millions of men like him out there.

Thank you for an informative (and even colorful) film about manipulative, narcissistic behavior. Valid and instructive even today.👍🎁
Merci partage ❤❤❤❤❤
I did not know this version existed!
MGM apparently wanted all copies of this film destroyed so that they had the only movie version available.
Typical scummy American company
my fave... thank you so good to watch it again.
To me, the finest and most mesmerizing adaptation.
😮😊😊
On another level - this is what authoritarian dictators often do to the population - gaslight them - stoking fear .
Correct! This is a variation on brainwashing.
Thank you 🥰Good movie 😃Always good to watch the great and talented Robert Newton 👍🥰
Merci pour cet ancien film

Wow, i didn't expect this to be so good. I thought thevterm gaslight was a recent one.
This film (or rather the first version from 1940) is the origin of the term "gaslighting"!
The term comes from the play "Gaslight" by Patrick Hamilton, published in 1935. The movie is based on the play.
Imagine buying toys for stranger children now. What a world we live in.
I'VE dealt with gaslighting having the person move am object and then ask if i did. Lying about what he saw and what or what did not happen.
When I first saw this movie six or seven years ago, I was like, "Ooohh, that's what that is."
We also need a colorized version of Roman holiday 😮
Huhhh!
