Better Davis gave some truly magnificent performances at her best but she also gave a good number of awful performances. You were always aware of her exaggerated mannerisms. Wow. Remember when actors in films actually ACTED with one another and were not just participating in random shots that are later edited together, as if they are actually acting with each other? I miss good cinema. Those days will probably never be again.
It's just throwaway, comic-book, CGI-stuff today: there are no actors or directors or producers of talent as there used to be: there's no need for them.
I remember several years ago when I first saw this film and thought it was one of the best films about Elizabeth Tudor, how Bette Davis acts is a one off! Truly exceptional.
Excellent costume drama, which I've never seen before. A nice mix of flamboyant traditional swashbuckling, but with some intelligent courtly plotting and one of the best scripts I've heard in a goodly while. Bette Davis made a very convincing Elizabeth, definitely a contender for Thora Robson's crown. Many thanks for sharing.
Can't take my eyes off of the sublime Davis. This was her second time playing Queen Elizabeth I. The first was in 1939 with Errol Flynn and then there's this one from 1955 with Richard Todd and Joan Collins. Davis is Davis and she remains the greatest actress of her time. By the time she made this film, she had already won her two Oscars and still had some wonderful work ahead of her. How great she was!
Can I ask you, are talking about the sea hawks 1939 Starring Errol Flynn. Because if so, Betti Davis did not star as Elizabeth 1, but another woman but cannot think of her name. If not can you tell me the name of the 1939 film starring Betti Davis, as I have not seen it.
Bette Davis played Liz # 1 in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex with Errol Flynn. Flora Robson played Liz # 1 in Fire Over England and The Sea Hawks.
It was wonderful to see Bette Davis and Jay Robinson in the same movie! He was quite a character actor. He was best known for playing the mad emperor Caligula in The Robe.

I know that you all thought Richard Todd was very good in this role, but perhaps you should also be aware he is a Sandhurst graduate, officer and war hero. He was the first out of the plane on D-Day as he was in the 6th Airborne Division parachuting into France. His mission was to take the Pegasus Bridge near Caen. The taking of this bridge was crucial for armor to cross in order to attack Caen and was prominently featured in the movie "The Longest Day". The lines were "Hold the bridge until relieved" in which Todd played Major Howard, his commander, but another actor played his part in that engagement. Todd also fought in the Battle of the Bulge as well as counter-insurgency operations in Palestine where he was seriously injured in a jeep accident breaking both shoulders and getting a concussion.
So pleasant to listen to this beautiful dialogue beautifully performed by all the cast without All the swearing and vulgarity of today's movies Bette was superb in her role as queen Elizabeth Mistress throtmortons. Character delightfully performed by Joan Collins
This film is an art form with a number of very fine actors, especially Richard Todd, Dan O'Herlihy and Herbert Marshall. Bette Davis goes without saying naturally. Hollywood takes great liberty with dates and historical facts so such a film cannot be taken seriously as far as history is concerned. They attempt to show the architecture, furniture and clothing of the time which gives the impression. Thank you for sharing this film. For those who don't know Herbert Marshall (Earl of Leicester) had only one leg. The other was artificial. He lost his leg in the 1914-18 war known as the Great War, The war to end all wars and the first World War. He had a long and illustrious career and the Hollywood of that time accepted his limitations and always made an effort to compensate.
Thanks for sharing the info about Herbert Marshall and recommendation for tempering entertainment value with relativity inaccurate historical information. I wonder how this movie was received by British, with an American, Bette Davis, playing the Queen Elizabeth. I know Renee Zellweger playing Bridget Jones was bothersome to the English, so I can only imagine how Bette Davis playing this role felt (smile).
Eileen D Interesting thought. I don't know how Bette was received. I certainly understand about Zellweger. I mean there are scores of UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand actors who play American roles but they do it with a brilliance that is without compare. American actors on the other hand have not the competence. Mostly their attempts to play any British roles are lamentable in my experience. Naturally there are no comparable personalities to Elizabeth I in American History.
Being British, it never bothered me that Miss Davis was an American playing the greatest Monarch in British History. Also, all my friends who love Miss Davis, have never found fault with her portrayal. She is more English than the English. 'Having been an actor, in my time, her performance is stupendous.
Now Bette Davis also played Queen Elizabeth I in the 1939 film The Private Life of Elizabeth and Wessex with Erroll Flynn. Since this one is in 1955 it must be the sequel.
