I think the third film is a strong entry, but definitely should’ve saved the mad max theme for a later entry, i agree with that. i also hate how they forgot all about the ending of Apocalypse and don’t explain what happened to Angela or Jill, or how they all got separated. Ali Larter was cast largely on the strength of her performance in the first two Final Destination movies. Milla Jovovich wasn't interested in doing a third Resident Evil film due to her disappointment with Resident Evil: Apocalypse. However she changed her mind after reading the script. There is no dialogue at all for the first 5 minutes of the film. Ashanti's first horror film. The crows sitting on power lines and attacking in large numbers pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock's movie The Birds (1963). The only Resident Evil film in which the character of Albert Wesker is played by Jason O'Mara. All films after this one Wesker was played by Sean Roberts For the crow attack scene, only two crows were used for the entire sequence. The rest of the crows were entered with special effects. The name of the terrifying mutation that Dr Isaacs morphs into during the final sequence is never mentioned in the film. The creature however is lifted directly from the video games and is called Tyrant. The complete name of the deadly virus is Tyrant virus. T-virus is just an abbreviation. The White Queen is never called specifically by name in the entire film. During the release of the movie was around the time that Milla Jovovich has just given birth to her and Anderson's first child
I actually like Wesker's portrayal in Afterlife/Retribution. I thought it was kind of cool how in Retribution they were making him to be like an anti-hero. As Wesker is my favorite RE character so i thought that was interesting/cool to see.
This movie has a special place in my hart it was the first resident evil movie I say and it's always been a guilty pleasure of mine I definitely think it's the 2 best movie after apocalypse

The original plan for the third movie involved Alice killing the Ashford girl while under Umbrella's control, but Milla Jovovich flat out refused to do that story. So she apparently has standards? IDK.
One of my faves of the franchise, because of the cool post apocalyptic Las Vegas setting. As far as I remember this introduced the copying Alice motive way more strongly and it´s a little throughline for the later sequels. And nothing´s wrong with just a surviving story. Let´s face it, in the end, they did nothing else in DOTD. Plus the falldown didn´t even took five years back then. And finally, the R-rating was (for the first time) earned.

I remember seeing it in theaters and thinking that it bore so little resemblance to anything that could be considered Resident Evil that it wasn't worthy of the title. I also hated the introduction of Alice's superpowers. In any good zombie movie, the horror comes from the protagonist(s) being vulnerable and trying to survive from the ever growing masses of the undead. Here, we are told right from the beginning that the number of undead far outnumbers the living across the globe, but there is never the slightest bit of terror or vulnerability because the protagonist is a full blown action superhero...and she's hot. I really just wish that they had gone in a direction with a little bit more substance instead of pandering to pre-teen boys, but it is what it is. I was a tad disappointed with the second movie, but I nearly wrote off ever seeing any more movies in this series after seeing this one.
This is the one film that I enjoy the most of the franchise. This is the one I watched the most too. Love the vegas setting. The action is good too. Great review Cody.👍
I think 3-5 are my favorites. I will say afterlife had some amazing 3D. In theaters it felt like you had an umbrella over your head. It was really cool. ALSO TOMANDANDY (Tom and Andy) music is pretty awesome.

I liked the deaf girl as a kinda daughter. And having Jill back was very cool. These are poor adaptations but fun stories. Alice is the only Mary Sue that gets a pass from me for how much she suffered and went through. Maybe it’s just a guilty pleasure but I legit get sad when Luther gets his heart stopped. And I guessed that Alice was always a clone and was maybe the final big bad (I was close but just a bit off apparently! Although why they never had an Alice v Alice is beyond me. Biggest miss for the series despite them ignoring the game characters. They introduced a gun that they never ended up shooting off in 4 films 🤦🏾♂️😂🤷🏾♂️👍🏾
Wow after watching this I was curious about the ashford girl so googled it and it’s messed up, apparently in the novel after 2 they’re on the run from umbrella who eventually manage to control Alice and orders her to kill the girl so Alice shoots her in the head with a shotgun 😱 now I understand why her fate wasn’t shown that’s grim 😂
I’m looking forward to the upcoming RE movie. Hopes aren’t high but I’m gonna give it a change. Like you I’m a huge fan of the games so the lore means a bit more.

My biggest problems with this one: where the hell are Jill and Angie? Literally nothing is said about them, like 'I couldn't stay after Jill and Angie died." They are just forgotten about. Alice has the cool powers and really does nothing with them. She saves Carlos and then she fights the monster and that's about it. At least do something...let us see her using them and then realizing she's being tracked, maybe she blames herself for Jill and Angie's death or whatever they are claiming happened. And that's why she's out in the desert, hiding. We don't need K-mart. She adds nothing and could have easily been Angie, especially given how little the character had to do. LJ was wasted. Carlos was close to wasted. I'm OK with the desert because it's a survival situation: you can easily see if any undead are coming vs. the camouflage of trees and rocks. But I don't get why Las Vegas is buried under sand. I know it's the desert and the wild would have grown in, but the several feet of sand built up seems a bit much.

I think retribution is my favorite. It knows what is it and has a ton of fun. If they ended the series better people would like 5 more. It gets a lot of hate for building up to a fight we will never get to see with characters we wanted. But that’s the final chapters problem IMO 🤷🏾♂️👍🏾😂
I never played the games. So went in blind. I used to work in a cinema so saw the first movie and found it to be a guilty pleasure as I was a fan of Romero's zombie movies. I heard originally Romero was hired to direct but was eventually fired. It does follow a lot of tropes he has in his movies. This, Extinction was my personal favourite of the first 3 as just a standalone zombie movie (at the time) A good mix of Mad Max and Day of the dead was an appealing set up and felt different and lead to a fun Zombie movie with some fun action. I Never watched any after this but, went back and watched 1 and 2 again... 1 is still guilty pleasure at best and very of it's time...schlocky but fun. 2 I just thought was a bit more B movie. Felt like a step down from one...and there was not far to step down 3 surprised me as it was a fun movie and had an assured hand directing it in Russell (Highlander) Mulcahy. Again not a fan of the games so just judging the movies... At the time there were not many zombie movies around or that got theatrical releases so this movie (at the time) pleased zombie fans if not fans of the games
It's not that I don't like the third movie, but I feel like... they could have put at least two more movies between the ending of the second movie and the beginning of the third. I actually feel like Jill Valentine is the only video game character that isn't a huge disappointment. The version of Carlos that we get in these films is a great character, but they could have easily named him anything else, and he'd get the same reaction. Much like Claire Redfield.
This was official the last Resident Evil movie that was decent and that's because it had ok original material. But this is also the one Paul WS Anderson ran out of ideas and started blantantly coping the games.
The last of the genuinely great zombie movies in this franchise. Four is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I hate five. Six is fine except the dumbass ending. Still 2nd bottom I think having Alice die over and over again and be clones slowly removes stakes among other problems.
This one was directed by Russell Mulcahy same guy who did highlander so I think this is probably the best looking one to me but God I really don't Iike Mila so it's still hard to get through.
This is the movie that I didn't see in theaters back in 2007 as I fell asleep and my mom just left without me that is until 2008 that I finally saw it on DVD I rented it at Hastings (Now Defunt as it is now a Harbor Freight ocupying the former Hastings store at the Northgate Shopping Center in Carlsbad, NM). I like how they made it all Mad Max style but I felt they should've save it for the 4th film with I agree you with that. Resident Evil: Extinction is where the Resident Evil films have peaked after this it just went downhill.

T virus wipes out all life on earth. Next movie there's plants, trees and grass. Gains loads of clones of herself at the end. Next movie there all killed in the opening 10 minutes.
Yea goes way downhill after this one. 1st 3 are all extremely flawed but fun. 3rd one had the best effects and action sequences. 2nd one closest to games but still long shot and a bit campy. 1st one has some decent fun moments and best from a narrative perspective. 6 would have been OK if it wasn't for all terrible action sequence editing and borderline nonsense story. 4 and 5 are just awful cartoon cgi messes.

I don’t hate this movie, but I don’t really like it either. The mad max sort of vibe always felt a bit cheap to me. Everything becoming desert was kind of a stupid touch in my opinion. A virus outbreak happened and it somehow terraformed the world I guess.
They gave no fucks about its own story. Fine don't follow the games story but atleast follow your own story. These movies didn't deserve to make enough money to continue making them
Being fair, Cody, she would have stood out even more to me if they named her Jennifer than Claire Redfield, only because cool, she has the same name as me. 😉😂🤣 But yeah, really the problem with this series, they pick characters from the games, but they just don't matter in these movies, because Alice being the chosen one so to speak. I think retribution is my favorite. It knows what is it and has a ton of fun. If they ended the series better people would like 5 more. It gets a lot of hate for building up to a fight we will never get to see with characters we wanted. But that’s the final chapters problem IMO 🤷🏾♂️👍🏾😂
I have this movie on DVD and it introduced me to DMC
I never played the games. So went in blind. I used to work in a cinema so saw the first movie and found it to be a guilty pleasure as I was a fan of Romero's zombie movies. I heard originally Romero was hired to direct but was eventually fired. It does follow a lot of tropes he has in his movies.
This, Extinction was my personal favourite of the first 3 as just a standalone zombie movie (at the time)
A good mix of Mad Max and Day of the dead was an appealing set up and felt different and lead to a fun Zombie movie with some fun action.
I Never watched any after this but, went back and watched 1 and 2 again...
1 is still guilty pleasure at best and very of it's time...schlocky but fun.
2 I just thought was a bit more B movie. Felt like a step down from one...and there was not far to step down
3 surprised me as it was a fun movie and had an assured hand directing it in Russell (Highlander) Mulcahy.
Again not a fan of the games so just judging the movies...
At the time there were not many zombie movies around or that got theatrical releases so this movie (at the time) pleased zombie fans if not fans of the games
Kmart was my fav character in 3 rd besides mike epps in other character s.
It's not that I don't like the third movie, but I feel like... they could have put at least two more movies between the ending of the second movie and the beginning of the third. I actually feel like Jill Valentine is the only video game character that isn't a huge disappointment. The version of Carlos that we get in these films is a great character, but they could have easily named him anything else, and he'd get the same reaction. Much like Claire Redfield.

This was official the last Resident Evil movie that was decent and that's because it had ok original material. But this is also the one Paul WS Anderson ran out of ideas and started blantantly coping the games.

The last of the genuinely great zombie movies in this franchise. Four is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I hate five. Six is fine except the dumbass ending. Still 2nd bottom I think having Alice die over and over again and be clones slowly removes stakes among other problems.
This one was directed by Russell Mulcahy same guy who did highlander so I think this is probably the best looking one to me but God I really don't Iike Mila so it's still hard to get through.
This is the movie that I didn't see in theaters back in 2007 as I fell asleep and my mom just left without me that is until 2008 that I finally saw it on DVD I rented it at Hastings (Now Defunt as it is now a Harbor Freight ocupying the former Hastings store at the Northgate Shopping Center in Carlsbad, NM). I like how they made it all Mad Max style but I felt they should've save it for the 4th film with I agree you with that. Resident Evil: Extinction is where the Resident Evil films have peaked after this it just went downhill.

T virus wipes out all life on earth. Next movie there's plants, trees and grass. Gains loads of clones of herself at the end. Next movie there all killed in the opening 10 minutes.

Truly the last "good" resident evil movie. I say good loosely. This and apocalypse are the 2 best. 4 is decent. 5 and 6 I hated.
Yea goes way downhill after this one. 1st 3 are all extremely flawed but fun. 3rd one had the best effects and action sequences. 2nd one closest to games but still long shot and a bit campy. 1st one has some decent fun moments and best from a narrative perspective. 6 would have been OK if it wasn't for all terrible action sequence editing and borderline nonsense story. 4 and 5 are just awful cartoon cgi messes.

I hate that timeskip after the second film so much.
I don’t hate this movie, but I don’t really like it either. The mad max sort of vibe always felt a bit cheap to me. Everything becoming desert was kind of a stupid touch in my opinion. A virus outbreak happened and it somehow terraformed the world I guess.
They gave no fucks about its own story. Fine don't follow the games story but atleast follow your own story. These movies didn't deserve to make enough money to continue making them
Being fair, Cody, she would have stood out even more to me if they named her Jennifer than Claire Redfield, only because cool, she has the same name as me. 😉😂🤣 But yeah, really the problem with this series, they pick characters from the games, but they just don't matter in these movies, because Alice being the chosen one so to speak. Really, they would be better I feel if they were just their own thing, nothing at all to do with a franchise, because pretty good horror action movies, but horrible Resident Evil movies. Hoping the new one is a better Resident Evil movie.

This movie really copied Day Of The Dead I only like the part when Alice had the two machetes and kill the zombies this movie made franchise go in a whole new direction with just the Resident Evil name slap on it.
I really didn't like this one, keep in mind I haven't watched it in a while, so my facts may be a little off! So sick of Alice! Killed off LJ and Carlos! Where was Jill Valentine? Did they even give an explanation of where Jill was? I can't remember. Good point on Claire, as she doesn't seem that important of a character! Although I remember her getting better in Afterlife! Yes K-Mart was TERRIBLE! I'm gonna start re-watching these again tomorrow! Great rundown of this pathetic movie! Sorry I'm a little critical as I hated this when I original saw it!
