We were taught to fire in bursts when on automatic.
Single shot fire in semi automatic was very accurate and the round having more knock down power than the M16.
A major reason the M14 was not continued in use by modifying with composite material for the stock was because the average frame of the soldiers of many of our allies was not robust enough to handle the M14.

They remade the rifle, using polymers where there was wood, and reintroduced it as the issued rifle for whomever has the role of Squad Designated Marksman.

It also holds the title of being the shortest lifespan in service.
    Only the Jarheads were issued.
Unless you are a special type of Grunt. Then you got the,
    M-21, with a M-22 javelin suppressor.
Quite the set-up adjustable trigger pressure, locking breach. Adjustable stock.
With decent optics, was a decent weapon.
Even shot one full-auto. It was uncontrollably. And I was good.
Couldn't top-off the M-1,; only 8 rounds. Also the 'clip' could be heard, signaling empty.
And it was the AR-15 that replaced it.(No forward assist)
Unless you are a special Grunt
Then you got the AR-10 (7.62)
    Just saying.............

      @txgunguy2766 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why?
I would say that the M-16 is a worse weapon. It's pathetically underpowered the first versions were sent into combat in Vietnam without cleaning kits because they were supposed to be so advanced that they didn't need them. That proved to be the extreme opposite of the truth. Even with cleaning kits there was no guarantee that your rifle would work reliably. I know of a paratrooper in 1967 who would clean his rifle 5 times a day whether he fired it or not. It would still reliably jam every 6-10 rounds. He remembered going into areas where another platoon or company had been in a firefight and finding numerous American soldiers dead with a jammed rifle in various stages of disassembly. The issues causing the jamming was FINALLY addressed in the M-16A1. The barrel and chamber were chrome lined, the powder used in the ammo was changed and cleaning kits were issued along with the rifle. The cartridge it fires, however, continues to be pathetically lacking in stopping power.

@@suzuzusu no, deadass. The fact that the army thought this weapon was the end all was idiotic. The bolt carrier cracks, the wood swells, and the full auto isn’t usable in any tactical capacity. Which is why it was so quickly replaced.

No. It had its faults but once adjusted to the individual it was extremely accurate.
But, yes, varying levels of humidity would cause movement of the wood stock and so require adjustment for accurate shooting.
