everyone knows that katana techniques are just for looking cool and don't have to be effective since katanas can cut through the very fabric of space and time anyway. The samurai win any fight by simply having the katana on their person. They don't even need to touch it and everything just drops dead on the spot. Come on people, this is common knowledge.
And to fully utilise their strengh you need to dual wield katanas in reverse grip.
Hristo Kuymdjiev 3 is a minimum with one held in the mouth.
That used to be the case, but then the Europeans showed up and started throwing pommels, and that was the end of the samurai. It's well-documented history.
Reverse grip gives you +10 to reflect bullets and laser beams. After all, everyone knows that ;).

Lego is made out of ABS, which is in fact a quite tough material. One piece of Lego may be. But a building made out of many interlocking pieces, really not sure. The blade might shatter building into parts but not cut through pieces.

@@darthplagueis13 No, but that's a common misconception. Drunken Fist actually requires complete sobriety. You act drunk to throw off opponents, true. However, if you were actually drunk, you'd probably just fall flat on your face.

A drunk was considered to be a difficult opponent. Posing a threat is an important part of fencing, but since it may be hard to scare a drunk, it all may not work.
Plus, a drunk isn't as predictible and readible as a sober opponent.

Redman A incorrect, a longsword of equal length and similar width to a katana would be quite a lot lighter due to the more defined and deeper fullers than a katana, also longswords usually have better pommels which would give it more rear-ward balance giving it more point control. If you would look at historical examples of katana and longsword, the longsword would be usually thinner. A usual katana around 35 inches would be about 430 g, while a longsword around 35 inches would whey around 380 g. I would recommend Shadiversity’s video on katana misconceptions.

What I have noticed in the course of my HEMA training in Spanish Rapier and in Arnis / Escrima is that even when you regularly spar in actual combat with protective gear, it is very challenging for practiced techniques to actually work as intended. There is simply too much resistance from the opponent and things move way too fast, usually at least 75% of the time, you have to use simplified versions of techniques and you have to train yourself to expect that your techniques will likely not work as planned ahead of time, thus you can adapt without any pause or surprise in the midst of a fight. Techniques actually working as intended are the very rare exception. This is the reality of actual combat. Without actual sparring, there is no way to develop preparedness for actual combat situations which are always chaotic and unpredictable aside from theory and a bit of muscle memory.
Skoth Kovok mind you, you aren't training 2 hours every day as the Bolognese militia did in the 15-16th centuries or like the Germans in the same time period. Or like a knight who does 2×2 every day.
True, however the nature of combat is that it is so chaotic that even though the ratio of their techniques working will surely increase, still the techniques working fully as intended would still be rare, for the simple fact that in real combat opponents are just moving around so much and very fast at that. Against a completely untrained opponent the techniques may work close to 100% yes, but they will most of the time work only part way as intended against another trained and disciplined opponent (which yes, may still be enough to kill him). Thus the need for being able to adapt real-time as part of the training itself when individual techniques don't fully work as drilled, this is part of the psychology of combat training, not expecting your techniques to work fully so you can adapt instantly and use the next one in the repertoire. If the wrong psychology is developed that a technique will likely work as intended as long as it is drilled enough, the trainee will be sorely disappointed when actual combat arrives. The ancients knew this well.
@@scottarnold5737 Absolutely. Much of combat is a parry-response affair, and no plan survives contact with the enemy. After significant training, it can be done, but even still the windows of opportunity are more oft than not too quickly closed to execute a technique.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out. Techniques only work when you master them. That means practicing for like 20 years to use it. In that time though you can train to be generic and adaptive to opponents as well.

How to defeat someone who is duel wielding... Stand back and watch them hurt themself, because they're probably a 12 year old that's watched too much Naruto and has never actually fought anyone.
Additionally, parrying daggers combined with another weapon are typically better at deflecting thrusts than a buckler. As well as the fact that a few hundred years ago, it was normal for almost everyone to be carrying around a dagger of some sort for everyday life while conversely a buckler was seen as weapon of war and typically people would see someone walking around town with a buckler as someone looking to start trouble because a buckler is only used in fighting.
As someone who just got his first taste of multiple opponent sparring at my HEMA club a month ago, i can say that sparring even two people is a PAIN IN THE ASS and I can attest to some of what Musashi wrote. I had to constantly keep on my feet, moving and moving, running in and out of range trying to make sure they couldn't get a beat on me. You have to be as efficient as possible as try to disable one person as quick as possible and move immediately to the next. That video is utter nonsense that would only work if someone could stop time because the instance you move to attack one person, the next person is going to go after you. You need to be quick and not get surrounded, if you get surrounded it's game over.
Definitely, unless they learned duel wielding forms and techniques from martial arts classes.
Redman A. I can see where you are coming from but a buckler was allso an every day carry. Your not going to carry a full sheald such as a kite sheald around all day for protection because it would be to unwealdy and impracticle for everyday life. However a buckler is easy to carry all day (ive done it) and in midevil times people carried swords for self defense(with the exception of a few citys in Europe where the laws where strickter but most if the time people where encoraged or required by law to own and be able to use a sword.) So carrying a buckler is not that far fetched. While bucklers where still used on the battlefield they where allso used allot by civilians to so they could protect themselves in day to day life. It is the equivalent of someone carrying a tazer, pepper spray and or a knife for self defence now adays. Anyways have a good mourning, afternoon or evening my friend witchever it may be!

And a few other swordsmanship classes, of sorts, maybe clocking some twenty hours total of training with instruction, tops.
From the guy's movements, such as how quickly he begins his sidestep from that overhead chop to demonstrate unarmed disarming, I'd say I could probably take him two times out of three.
And I KNOW I'm a scarcely-capable amateur. :P

Noah Weisbrod i don't know how did that myth get started, but i've seen it repeated many times. i suppose people who never held a sword (or even a proper sword simulator) in their hands immediately conclude that curved swords (eg: katanas, sabers, etc) can't thrust. the reverse myth that "rapiers can't cut" also exists. though in this case it's probably because people hear "rapier" and think of an olympic fencing foil. ironically, some older adventure films from the 50s and 60s do show rapiers delivering cuts as well as thrusts.

Reminds me of those ninjutsu books from the 80s that taught you important fighting skills like balance beam and how to hold your breath for as long as you already could.
I'm guessing they didn't teach any actually useful ninja skills like how to sneak poison into someone's food, how to find the easiest spots to climb on a brick wall, and optimal distance for eavesdropping on a conversation.

1. While they are not looking, or from the assassin's tea pot(double chambered Teapot)
2. The slightly more protruding bricks or where the mortar isn't filling space as good as it should.

I do not take any demonstrations seriously that use metal blades, because you can't aim to hit with these - which is essential to execute techniques that are supposed to work against attacks that are meant to hit.
There is a very good reason why they invented wooden training swords...

I've used metal katanas in training. While it's true that you can't go full speed, you can do in fact act fast while controled. Also, the problem with the guy is not that he was doing the techniques slowly. Is that he was doing techniques that CANNOT WORK when doing in a proper fight.
For example, if instead of "parry and catching with the tsuba", he shows a real, effective deflection parry (which is the ones real masters teach, because they are the ones shown in the real school scrolls), then nobody would complain if he does it in slow motion to show off the technique better. But he did not deflect-parry. He said, with confident voice, that his technique of choice would be to stop a full speed slashing weapon with a miniature guard like a tsuba. That's stupid. Then he continues this "technique", after catching with the tsuba, by doing a awful lot of horrible footwork, passing to the left side of the attacker, then to the right side of the attacker doing a ton of small, non fluid steps, while the attacker is somewhat frozen in fear because he still does not understand why the guy went to a straight parry and catch with the tsuba. Fortunately for the "master", because he moves his katana around the other guy blade, losing control of it, so if the attacker were not frozen , he'll be able to raise his sword and kill him while he moves around like an idiot.
This 'expert' has been educated by finest Anime.

I just wanted to say that you are by far the best youtuber on the net at the time. I saw many channals and many videos and the way you explain and go into (necessary) details is simply perfect. You are informing, enterntaining and above all I respect you for your logic and ability to openly admit when you don't know or aren't sure of something- and the way you resolve that problem (always giving credit where credit is due)...

Metatron, I truly enjoyed this rant. I am not an expert either, but I too have been involved in Karate as a boy, HEMA as an adult, and this guys ideas of martial arts are just a joke. My favorite part of this video is when you stated, "If it doesn't work in practice, it will not work on the battlefield." No truer words could ever been spoken about any martial art.

Giving the benefit of the doubt to the video being reviewed, the "expert" does hold his hands and move his upper body like someone who knows their way around a martial art to some degree (in the bits where he engages hand to hand). But for swordism (that's the technical term), his footwork is simply all over the place! He's basically just walking around. Those are not the steps of a swordsman, in my amateur opinion. So it ends up looks like the kind of video that I would make if I tried - because... I'm no swordsman either.

As someone who has a year of Sport Fencing, 3 years of Kendo, almost a year of HEMA now and have had many great conversations with Richard Marsden, Martin Fabian and the head of the Hokushin Ito Ryu over Facebook, along with meeting many amazing fencers from KDF and sparring with them in person ...I can tell you that your assumptions are correct. His footwork, stance, practically every aside from his grip, kinda, is wrong and this is a clear case of "Let the teacher perform a bunch of complicated techniques on non-resistive students standing still". It's sad, pathetic and there's literally a 100 other people who would be more qualified to teach swordsmanship on Howcast than this con artist.

This is my third or fourth vid of yours with the first being top 10 most effective Japanes weapons and the second being top 10 most effective Okinawan weapons. This one and the third one top ninja weapons you dont want to cross had me laughing and saying that makes a lot of sense why that is wrong. i agree wholeheartedly with you Metatron and for a few different reason, firstly if someone claims to be a expert they should be held to the highest standards - period. secondly bullshit should be called out at every point as not doing so is dangerous, imagine people standing in harms way against a sword wielding nut job because they feel they have the correct skill set to defeat said nut job from watching videos like this? you might say ' if they are that stupid then they deserve it' but how many times have you taken other peoples advice that you regard as a expert - like a doctor for example, the point is the term 'expert' is thrown about too freely and carries huge responsibilities that people don't fully appreciate and people will take your words and videos as the final say on such matters ,they will take them as 100% correct, 100% effective and will very likely feel emboldened by the knowledge they perceive they have learned from you and should they find themselves in a life or death situation where their first action should be to get as far from the situation as possible they instead could choose to stand and fight in the false beliefe that 'expertly taught' knowledge they have learned will allow them to defeat the attacker. just my thoughts

also parry a downward strike whith the tsuba? are you fucking serious? you always parry with the blade. the tsuba /crossguard and alike is mainly to protect your fingers from a sliding blade when you CORRECTLY parried a strike.

I watched those how cast videos last year before discovering your channel and even I had a feeling in my stomach that what he was doing didn't look right. Also, his improper teachings could make practice dangerous for those who attempt to learn from his videos!

I have been complimented many times on my reflexes, yet I still find it challenging to defend against both my five year old and three year old simultaneously in a duel. They are relentless little buggers and it takes a lot of effort to keep their swords at bay. If you take this effort and apply it to two trained adults, the odds stack heavily against you.

Ok I got sold with this video, ahaha, you made me laught, good reasoning, and as a praticioner of iaido I really dislike people like the guy you are debunking, they give such a bad image to people who practice japanese martial arts. I don't even know what people like this have in their heads. You have no idea how thankful I am for having the Sensei I have, the man is truly someone who knows what he is doing, what he is teaching, open-minded about criticism (he is quite auto-critic) and learning new things, new kata, new schools, etc. Without bullshit like the guy on that video and similar people. well we all know of the famed battle where Musashi discovered dual wielding, batteling many more combatants down a mountain, but he was using a Kata na and a short sword(can't recall the name but it was the shorter sword in the set) but he did not use his blades as shields, it is obvious he would have parried attacks with one while reposting with the other +the mountain road(or pass can't recall the exact location) was thin and no more then one samurai could come forth. What I wanted to say is : parrying a few blows with your sword is not using it as a shield, had the guy seen a kendo fight he would have realized his moves would not stick even against the newbie who just started.
The shorter sword is the wakizashi, the pair together is called the daisho. Nice historical anecdote about Master Musashi!

Destroyer Inazuma ty for the tips :) Also the reason I know of this is because I looked up Miyamoto Musashi is because I read the two volume novel Musashi which apparently contains a lot of things that actually happened to him. and that novel got me interested and I started reading :) Now(after 10 years) I'm reading when ever I can/feel like it The book of the five Rings! I read before it The art of War, short but direct :)
