    My biggest concerns are:
    1) this type of video brings 99% of toxic discussions: people will either judge Hema/kenjutsu according to their fanboyism or even worse, will judge your styles because it wasn't good enough or silly stuff like that.
    2) eye protection; it doesn't matter if you are using nerf sword, a hit on the eye would be a very bad situation. Be careful next time!! Always use some type of protection, we don't want a blind Metatron

    • @RockerMarcee96
      @RockerMarcee96 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well yes it is my problem as well. It would be nicer if two high level practicioners had at each other. But then again it is very hard to find kenjutsuka who train in gear, and even harder who train in adequete gear. It's pretty gosh damn hard to find someone who doesn't use a kendo mask for example.

    • @MrBottlecapBill
      @MrBottlecapBill 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      One of the things I liked about this was the fact they didn't use protection. Which means, even though they were not going full force, a hit will sting. That changes the game and skews it more towards an actual combat situation, because the price of failure is larger. Obviously the lack of eye and head protection takes head attacks out of the equation but it was still interesting.

    • @bg8224
      @bg8224 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Your first concern is pretty weak. If people decide to get immature and toxic over it than it is only a sign of their own weakness of character. Plus you throw this 99% figure out there with no basis on observed reality. I took a few scrolls down and saw mostly positive comments and light-hearted memeing.
      Second concern is fairly solid, but at the same time, neither fencer was really going for any deliberate head or face strikes, and they are clearly both fairly accomplished at what they do.

    • @-smp-scientificmethodpersp838
      @-smp-scientificmethodpersp838 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Anyone who is concerned with or can't handle "toxic" comments shouldn't be concerned with any type of martial art/combat or self defence. It's like avoiding using a knife, because you might cut yourself in the kitchen. It's the same as avoiding outside criticism, because your afraid of critical thinking, challenging, and debating questions. The word "toxic" to me implies weakened minds that fear exploration and deciphering outside their own perspective for fear of difference, being wrong, or not wanting things to be any other way than what you want them to be. It's like a xenophobia between different types of styles and schools. You're right. Allot of people don't like to improve their skill or knowledge; they just want to prove what they *WANT* to be true to be true, not what actually is. Good to see this video bring cross-fighting unity into greater understanding. This is the way.

    • @MunyuShizumi
      @MunyuShizumi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      "Exactly the same" is exaggerating it quite a bit, though the basic principles can be considered very similar. HEMA motions end up being rather linear and straightforward and emphasize stabbing quite a bit, kenjutsu focuses more on transferring momentum while slashing. Mostly because of the weapon geometry, the katana's curvature makes this somewhat mandatory (especially with the thicker blade), whereas European swords are predominantly straight and noticeably thinner (but usually somewhat longer).
      Also take into account that the katana changed very little over time due to cultural reasons (hence the swordsmanship remaining very similar), while European swords evolved in various directions in a more utilitarian fashion over a very long time, and various new techniques had to be developed for new types of swords. As a result, HEMA has so many different styles for different sword types that you can't even call it similar to itself a lot of the time (ex. longsword vs. rapier).

    • @thunderx7826

    • @mattmanbrownbro
      @mattmanbrownbro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      Archontasius it does several things. It shifts the stored energy to your other leg and it opens up the other side of your body so you can drive in attacks from the other side. It also allows you to shift your defensive frame toward the other direction when THEY move their sword to the other side, or when you want to defend a certain direction.
      But most importantly, it just let's you move in or out of fighting distance.

    • @melchaios
      @melchaios 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      edge alignment and power for the most part, twisting your whole body in the same direction the blade goes gives you more control, better edge alignment and more power.
      You can test by yourself with a broomstick: Put yourself in a ready position with your left foot as lead and the right as rear, grab the stick two handed and rest it on your right shoulder, do a diagonal downward cut while advancing with the right rear foot at the same time, end the cut with your right foot as lead and your hands at waist level. After that try doing it without passing the right foot forward, you'll notice that while it can be done it doesn't feel "right" , it feels more sloppy, uncontrolled, with lower reach and less powerful. That's the effect of your upper body twisting to the other side your hips and lower body are facing, while the first method feels better because your upper and lower body are going in the same direction and facing the same side all the time.
      This is orthodox and proper cutting technique, which is not set in stone specially when sparring. In a real fight you have to react fast and oftentimes you'll have to launch cuts and parries from awkward or less than ideal positions.

      They basically covered it but side note is that not all armed martial arts do this. One example being rapier, you almost always lead with your dominant side and you're footwork resembles that of a southpaw in boxing if you're right handed

    • @kidthorazine
      @kidthorazine 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mostly to allow you to attack in the other direction (for reasons stated above) since you can't really attack over your lead leg effectively you need to switch positions to cut in that direction (lead with your left to cut to the right lead with your right to cut to the left) and yeah you don't really do that in rapier or smallsword fencing since it's super thrust centric for the most part and always keeping your blade in front of you and being able to lunge is more important.

    Despite the differences in how they fight, there are key similarities to these two styles and they make up the foundational bases for both sword fighting techniques.
    1) Never use more than the amount of energy necessary to make an effective strike.
    2) Stay in contact so that you may influence your foe and react accordingly.
    3) Pick your ideal range and play off that advantage.

      Linda Liljecrona well to be fair there are longswords with blades as short as 80 cm but they are way rarer than the ones with 110 (being the other extreme)

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In principe, there are even longer blades, but I wouldn't classify them as longswords, as you can't draw them from your hip any longer. Depending on your size it ends with 100-120cm.
      Katana could have any length from 50cm to 120cm and be all worn the same (though, we apply different names to them today). I guess that explains the wait with drawing the blade until you can hit, or the one stance where you can't see how long the blade actually is...

    This was a great video, Metatron! I've waited a long time to see something like this in a high quality video. As a practitioner of Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū and the swordsmanship of Fiore dei Liberi, it was very interesting to see what you guys experimented with.
    When you practice outside without having to worry about camera angles, I'd recommend trying to use the environment to your advantage. I know you have read The Book of Five Rings, so I'm sure you remember what Miyamoto Musashi wrote about keeping the sun facing your opponent and keeping him on edge so he can't pay attention to what is around him. It is important to learn how to fight when you can't do much with your environment, but you may be put at a disadvantage if you're against someone who uses it more than you.

    Hello Meta! A few things I've noticed for you. When you cut from jodan you aren't stepping with your leading foot. This negates the range advantage. You are stepping with your shinto men strike so think of jodan as that. I think your shinto men strike might be going too low. Maybe stop about knee height and switch to gedan? You have great reflexes, so you should be able to do it. You should look more into gedan stance (total opposite of jodan).
    Now about your defensive. You have long arms, but you get really close. Think back to kendo and the monouchi. When you retreat, you have a habit of crossing your legs past each other. This compromises your stance. There's a stance you do where the hilt is in front of your face and the blade pointed down. You charged into Martin with that and that's a HEMA disarm technique (German?).
    I'd like to see these kinds of videos more often (maybe once every 2-4 months?) and see how you change. Thanks for reading my essay.

    I'm afraid those safe swords are not a good representation of actual weapons. They seem to be to soft and some blocks and parries that would've worked with steel or even wood just failed due to their bendable nature. For a better presentation you could try that again but with a waster vs a bokken.

    • @RockerMarcee96
      @RockerMarcee96 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Przemysław Zbigniewsson I wouldn't use a boken in this situation. They are very rigid and it kind of hurts when a piece of wood is stuck in your brain along with your shattered cranium.

    • @harnischfechter
      @harnischfechter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcellus you can use padded protection and fencing masks. However, in traditional kenjutsu you don't use any protection and you train with bokken instead of shinai. I had had a number of sparrings with bokkens before I moved from kenjutsu to HEMA.

    • @harnischfechter
      @harnischfechter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bokudensuduharagmail sure you can. I did and I assure you I'm quite alive. Prospect of possible pain and bruises is IMO the only thing that will make you cautious and focused enough for this kind of sparring to make sense. It is sufficient not to commit fully to the blows and keep the bokken/waster under control. Sparring is more about technique and honing reflexes rather than trying to hurt the opponent. Now whenever I'm sparring we use helmets, gauntlets and gambesons for blunt steel swords. Hits hurt but no one got seriously injured... and that's over a span of 11 years of practising historic fencing.

    • @harnischfechter
      @harnischfechter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      bokudensuduharagmail as always the conclusion is "you do you". For me and my sparring with bokkens/wasters worked. Those soft LARP swords don't handle right and are to bendable for some techniques to work properly. I'm pretty sure that historically sparring with wooden training weapons was also the preferred safety measure and people weren't dying left and right during practice. If you think it's too high risk and elect to use different tools then I'm sure you know what's best for you.

    • @RockerMarcee96
      @RockerMarcee96 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Przemysław Zbigniewsson mind you pulling your strikes is not a good practice and it leads to a bunch of artifacts in your fencing. As well as developing arthritis.

    I starting watching this wondering why Metatron was fighting an elf. I guess maybe the depictions of Santa's elves are with clothing from that time period or something. But it's kind of funny. I also have to think that real combat was a lot more aggressive than this. Maybe people got cut up a heck of lot too. But that's kind of what I would expect in an actual battle situation. There would be a lot of adrenaline and a lot of carnage.

    • @TheBeevinator
      @TheBeevinator 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The clothing is in a Landsknecht style, flamboyant colours and such typical of certain Germanic mercenary groups.

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      The Medieval clothing Martin is wearing is spon on historically accurate. As I said in the section about the fight intensity it's just a Hollywood/Videogame thing you expect to see in real duels. When you are risking your life you consider every step, every movement because against a fully trained duelist or samurai or knight if you just run towards him and commit full force without caring you will die. Evey move is a calculated risk. I've seen HEMA masters probe for over 5 minutes before trying an actual attack. In real life you don't have a continue button. Also this is not battle, it's an unarmoured duel.

    • @SuperGman117

    • @Lobosatirico
      @Lobosatirico 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, they are not floppy, they are flexible. With one of those swords, for example, you can´t parry properly as they would just give way. I have a pair of very similar latex swords and funny as it is doing some swordplay with them, it is completely different to using a steel one. Also, latex swords are real swords, just as a wooden one would be a real sword as well.

    Good concept for a video. Though I do feel this was pointed more akin to LARP scoring then HEMA scoring. A lot of the contact being made in these exchanges are not meeting with what would be good edge alignment , so many of these hits would have been called off. Regardless this was entertaining. Good job Metatron :)

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually this is neither HEMA scoring nor LARP, personally I am not a big fan of Kendo scoring or any scoring that calls off a hit because it's not executed perfectly. A sharp blade to the face is still gonna cut and deal damage even if my body is not in the perect position, or my grip isn't perfect and even if edge alignment is not correct the blade will still cut, not as well but it will, I can assure you of that because I have opened a cut on my friend's hand once during a super slow reharsal using a blunt sword. So if I could cut with a blunt moved slowly I will cut with a sharp sword.
      With this I don't mean to say I don't value proper form, but I give priority to hitting first because a sharp sword is a very dangerous weapon regardless of how you use it. I prefer a swordsman who hits and covers himself even if not in the perfect way than a swordsman who is perfect to look at but fails to cover himself for instance.

      I finally got a reply! I'm fanboying now. Sorry. Anyway, I totally understand where you're coming from and I can respect that. I started the video trying to score the exchanges and then after a couple of minutes I decided to just forget about it and enjoy the video. :)

    • @chaoticlighttv6207
      @chaoticlighttv6207 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, in retrospect, your decision in scoring actually makes more sense because neither of you were wearing armor of any kind. So now I seem like an even bigger idiot. Sorry if I offended.

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No offense was taken. Also we used red for good hits and yellow for hits which weren't as good because you didn't cover and you got hit afterwards. ;) Thank you for watching.

    It was really fun to watch. There is not too many videos of historical Kenjutsu out there. Let alone seeing them pit against HEMA. It was fun and interesting to watch. Seeing this actually makes me want to see 2 masters of both practices go at it.

    Hey Metatron! Big fan of your Zombie videos, have made Urban survival kit video myself and wanted to know your opinions about the weaponry for the scenario!
    my choices are:
    IMO, for urban survival, good melee weapons are: Shield, one handed mace, machete (as a tool as well), crowbar (as a tool as well) and knife (well, of course fix-bladed)
    ranged weapons: Bow (silent, reusable (arrows)), SCAR,pistol (any, but I choose P30L) and DP12 (for close environments)!

      Spare time G Why bow when u have assault rifle? :D silenced .22 is far better than any bow....

    • @Spare_Time_G
      @Spare_Time_G 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      well:
      1. silenced gun is never actually silenced, it is still pretty loud.
      2. arrows can be re-used, bullets, cant. BTH if you are good enough, it is pretty easy to make DIY arrows and use them, if the main ones get damaged or lost.

    • @somerando1073
      @somerando1073 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Too much stuff to carry around in my opinion, unless you're keeping it in a "base" of some sort. 1 short range melee weapon (I'd go with a hatchet or cut down ax, that replaces both mace and machete), no shield (better a lightweight armor, even cut up milk jug or 2 liter bottle armor would protect from teeth), 1 mid range melee which you have none of (I'd go Chinese style glaive, but lots of pole weapon types would work), and 1 long range. Even just that much would be awkward to carry, though better.

    • @Tkoutlosh
      @Tkoutlosh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spare time G 1) silenced .22 is silent enough, you can hear it, but it is very difficult to localize source
      2) arrows could be easily lost or broken, restoring it from dead rotting and infected body, clean it and than carry it with you again... enjoyable and risky experience. Also... you can go to pick it up only if area is safe, so you have to kill all zombies and no retreat or defensive use. Majority of accesible bows are too weak and arrows too light to do serious damage to head even from quite short distance. Even if you have powerful hunting bow you cannot use any arrow you find and you definitely cannot use selfmade arrows in any modern bow. There are lack of properly strong historical bows and if you can find one, it is quite difficult to use it and hit accurately. It is not easy to made historical longbow, it requires some space and tools, lot of experience and properly prepared wood which is essencial. Making an arrow is absolutely not "pretty easy" even for people who doing this for years, it takes time and requires specific equipment and parts or it will has really poor accuracy.... bow is slightly better than nothing, only if you have proper bow and arrows, it is pretty big thing to carry and really usable only in some very specific situations.... predominantly pretty useless in "zombie apocslypse scenario" ... and if you have a gun... pfff. You will drop bow and arrows away pretty soon...

      @karlmarx7333 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should have a lightweight armor and longsword as it will do well to cut limbs and heads off and is double bladed so it can be slashed with using Borge sides. Large Shield is almost pointless as there probably won’t be a another bow user and it takes up space that can be used for another weapon or a larger weapon. Bow would most likely be used for hunting as a piercing weapon won’t do much to stop a zombie. This seems more like a we’ve had a nuclear war fallout type kit

    I'm a Fiore di Battaglia student so I'm not familiar with German treatises was that all Talhoffer or did you add Lichtenauer as well, or am I completely wrong all the way around? Also from what I understand (which is very little) is that lichtenauer wasn't meant to be a standalone system but rather a system for defeating the common system, is that an accurate understanding?
