Can a Real Suit of Armor Stop a Bullet?!?!Debunking Video

  • Here we are looking at the latest video from the DemolitionRanch channel. No disrespect to them but this video has some problems.
An armour (spelled armor in the US) is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action.
The word "armour" began to appear in the Middle Ages as a derivative of Old French. It is dated from 1297 as a "mail, defensive covering worn in combat". The word originates from the Old French armure, itself derived from the Latin armatura meaning "arms and/or equipment", with the root armare meaning "arms or gear".
Armour has been used throughout recorded history. It has been made from a variety of materials, beginning with rudimentary leather protection and evolving through mail and metal plate into today's modern composites.
Significant factors in the development of armour include the economic and technological necessities of its production. For instance, plate armour first appeared in Medieval Europe when water-powered trip hammers made the formation of plates faster and cheaper.
Well-known armour types in European history include the lorica hamata, lorica squamata, and the lorica segmentata of the Roman legions, the mail hauberk of the early medieval age, and the full steel plate harness worn by later medieval and renaissance knights, and breast and back plates worn by heavy cavalry in several European countries until the first year of World War I (1914-15). The samurai warriors of feudal Japan utilised many types of armour for hundreds of years up to the 19th century.

@@waynepurcell6058 Based on available sources, late-16th-century matchlocks were in fact quite powerful. Sir Roger Williams, Humphrey Barwick, Sir John Smythe, & other period military writers indicated the heavy musket could pierce armor at absurd ranges. This matchlock firearm was so long & heavy it required a rest to shoot. Barwick, for example, wrote that the musket would kill through armor of proof at 200 yards, common armor at 400 yards, and no armor at 600 yards. Given how quickly spherical shot loses velocity as it moves through the air, this suggests an initial kinetic energy for the heavy musket of at least 8,000 J (5,900 foot-lbs). It'd probably take even more than that to kill through mere pistol-proof armor (approximately 3mm of hardened steel) at 200 yards. So we're talking around same kinetic energy as an elephant gun. It was far less efficient than modern firearms at using this energy to penetration or move through the air, but the heavy musket had raw power in spades. Steel armor in late-16th-century Europe was so protective that the heavy musket saw widespread use. & apparently something similar happed in China a little later.

The biggest problem with testing historically accurate armor is the cost. Few people want to spend that much on something that they're probably going to destroy in a single afternoon.
PS) In addition to using modern smokeless powder (more velocity) modern firearms use different bullets. Modern bullets are generally bullet shaped, which gives them greater weight and sectional density compared to a round ball of the same diameter and material. This is especially true for rifle bullets, which are generally longer than handgun bullets. Also, modern bullets are usually jacketed, which makes them more durable.

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The problem is that unfortunately that horrible excuse of an armour set him back surely of about 1K. With 1200 you can get your hands on some properlymade and very good looking breastplate backplate and fauld, which would be heat treated and actually real.

Y'know? Matt's video is oddly still appropriate. That 'not-armor' is the stuff that most people would be able to buy and pick up in a pinch, not knowing any better.
So, sure, it's not proper armor. But, under the conditions of his opening statement, he is testing whether that crap would work today.

  • @Nerobyrne

AFAIK, the last time humans built metal armor to defend against gunfire was in WW1.
It ended up being too bulky, even though it was effective at stopping/deflecting bullets.
Even today we still use armor to defeat gunfire, but it's made of kevlar because nobody can wear that much metal and function as a proper soldier.

This video made me so happy. I love Matt’s content, he is a genuinely nice guy (as evidenced in his multiple TH-cam channels) but that video of his ‘real’ armour made me cringe a little. I’m very far from being an expert on any armour systems or medieval weapons but I do know a little about them and I also know just enough about metallurgy to immediately see through the Indian-made Spartan Nordic Medieval Samauri ‘real armour’.
Your video is so kind, respectful and informative that it absolutely bumped you up several rings on my ladder of most respectable youtubers. Thanks heaps mate! Well done!

I mean lot of factors at play with stuff like this. Range, caliber of the bullet, angle of attack, quality of the armor (cheap knock off display for say a hotel lobby or hollywood vs the real deal etc). Kind of reminds me of those bow channels and their "Does armor/chain/shields" stop an arrow. And then they proceed to use a modern compound bow from like 5 feet away.

Ned Kelly is a legend in Australia, though I doubt he's much known elsewhere. He died in 1880. He was hanged. The reason he was hanged instead of being shot to death in the massive gunfight he instigated, is because his armour protected him. Allow me to unpack that a little:
Ned Kelly was an outlaw who refused to allow himself or his family to be bullied by crooked cops. He ended up killing a number of police officers and knew that the police would eventually come for him in force. By the time they did, Ned Kelly had made a suit of armour for himself, which proved to be entirely 100% bulletproof. Unfortunately for Mr. Kelly, his legs were not armoured. While the armour he made protected him completely from every single bullet that his armour, he was still captured. One of the police who were shooting at him (possibly more than one) noticed at some point- more than ten minutes- into the gunfight, that his legs were unarmoured and so he, or possibly 'they' started shooting at Mr. Kelly's legs. The story continues, but the point is:
Ned Kelly wasn't a time traveller. He wasn't a blacksmith or an armourer. He used whatever crappy metal was available to him at the time, to make some crude armour. If he- an outlaw- were able to do this and to find that his armour was 100% bulletproof, then I don't think that the blacksmiths and armourers of the day would have had much difficulty in replicating this feat.
