Today I will answer these questions in my new step by step jewelry making tutorial! I will discuss what I use for pickling and cleaning silver while soldering, what I use to prevent fire scale and special butter I use for sawing and drilling. In other words, today I will be testing Bench Basics from Pepetools!

My gallery wire melted 😢 what did I do wrong?
@@chloewillis7353 I'm so sorry this has happened, Chloe, I feel your pain 😢❤️ It was most likely too much heat. You have to be extra careful with gallery wire, just like with fine silver, it melts very fast, because there's not much metal when there are a lot of cutouts. So it heats up really fast and can melt. I hope next attempt will be much better! Good luck ❤️

I ALSO JUST GOT THE BENCH BASICS SET! I did not get thr pickle just because I don't need any yet. But I'm excited to try it!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Smart Flux and I also got the ErgoLast Pick! The blade butter.... I love the way it works... I don't like how I have to use my finger to apply it.... maybe that's just me... But it is GREAT! Your work is BEAUTIFUL as usual!! As for the blade butter, I can relate. I'm quite particular about textures and tpuch, so I was worried I might have some problems with it, but fortunately in my case it's bearable 😂😁 Maybe try applying with a wet cosmetic tip? Or something similar.

Rather than your finger to apply the blade butter, I use a broken saw blade, or you could use a cocktail stick. I use it for applying paste solder too. Steve...
Thanks for the tip about checking the fit of the stone by dropping it from the top. I just made a bezel which I thought fitted, but of course when I soldered on the back plate it didn't fit anymore 😆

Hello I hope you’re doing well. Love the tips. My current pickle is citric acid that’s pretty inexpensive from Amazon. The citric acid doubles as a cleaning agent for greasy pans ☺️ I may have to try that pickle from Pepe when I graduate from a coffee cup to an actual pickle pot 🤣 Beautiful work as usual

I did that with two of my Sterling silvers, I'm just learning and I guess I don't know maybe I had the heat on it for too long and the rings started melting! LMAO 🤣 I put it in my little junk sterling silver pile

Question.... Regarding the ring with the two different gallery wires… does the solder placed on the inside of the bezel flow out to both that bezel as well as the beaded wire bezel? Or do you place bits of solder under the beaded wire as well and heat them all up at the same time? Thanks!
Hi, I just saw that you were drilling on the top of that wood (don't know it's name but you know what i mean). You can buy/get some wooden block and drill on the top of it :) It might be easier to replace :) at least we used those at school :D Anyway, great video (as always). I didn't know that bead wire exists. I thought you need to attach it one by one :D (At least in my school we would need to do it. We even had to make wires XD It was time consuming T_T )

Hiya ADHD,
Love the name. The paste is a flux used to keep the silver from oxidising under heat and allow the solder to flow. Basia also used the Bench basics flux. You put it on the metal where you are going to solder.
May I recommend getting any and all books on jewellery making you can find, from beginners to advanced? The jewellery suppliers sell them, but you can also find them on Amazon. This will help you learn now rather than wait till someone sees your question and answers them. Your local library may have some too.

Whoa! What is that technique you’ve got going with the black (charcoal?) soldering block and the wire?!?! Maybe that’s what I need to try!

It's iron-binding wire. You tightly wrap the charcoal block to stop it from splitting. You can get it from jewellery supply companies.

1)how do you determine ring size when it’s not completely closed (like using the Pi formula)? Someone once mentioned Rosie recover mandrel. Is that how?

3)have you ever soldered silver bezel wire onto copper backplate? i did it once but very carefully from below because the copper needed so much heat. Any advice?
4) (sorry so many …) when using a binding wire nest you aim the flame to the charcoal and let it bounce back? I tried to get the flame underneath using my nest and my nest wasn’t high enough!
I'm glad you enjoyed it Susan! Thank you for watching :) I haven't worked with copper, just one attempt long time ago. I use regular calculations or the calculator on Rio Grande's website. And then I account for a little chunk of silver I cut off to make an open ring. I also use Rosy Revolver mandrel, whcih helps with that. I like both open and closed back of the bezel and it usually depends on the stone I;m using or the size of the gem. I heat up around the metal on the charcoal block and I use the nest to heat up from below. I reshape the nest whenever I need to make it taller :)

I use all of them, especially if there are multiple joints. You don't want to melt your piece while soldering more, so it's usually best to start with hard solder, then medium and easy the last. To solder ring bands and ear posts, I recommend hard solder!

Awesome! Thank you! I’ve been trying to make some rings and often, when soldering my bezel to the base plate, the bezel will melt at the point where it was previously soldered together. Not just the solder melting, but a bit of the surrounding silver too. Why does this keep happening? I understand the need to use easy solder, medium solder, etc. So I try to use a harder solder first because I’m going to be soldering about 3 times total on the piece. But often, by the time I’m on my 2nd step, my bezel melts through. I keep ruining my pieces! Is the bezel wire too thin?
Not too thin as very thin, and has a lower melting point. Try using med solder first, then just easy solder. Once the solder has been melted in use, its melting point goes up. It will not melt as quickly as it did. Fine silver is a pain; Basia is very experienced; I melted some the other day. It is very easy to say to yourself, "One second more, then... then it melts..." Practice is the only way out of it. Best of luck, to you, oh and me I guess too...

It's iron wire. Sold at most good jewellery suppliers for binding pieces together to solder. Also called 'binding wire'. Also used to bind up charcoal blocks to stop them from splitting.

Basia, can you share why you use baking soda water for quench? I understand why baking soda is good for post pickle, but before....I don't know why. I understand that baking soda neutralizes pickle, would quenching in baking soda water compromise the pickle and it's job? Quite a quandary....thanks! Oh, and I LOVE how you used a bead as your bail, that looks great!
I too thought that placing your metal in the neutralizer before placing in the pickle would cause problems. Unless you rinse with water after the baking soda solution, then some of the neutralizer will be going into your pickle pot. I would think that this would weaken your pickle over time.

The baking soda is to neutralise any acidic effect from the pickle. Using only one bowl of water is mainly for convenience, although some books do say that flux needs to be naturalised before pickle. All I know is it works. Steve...
@Stephen Coster Hi there, so great to get any response. So, I totally get the neutralizing of the pickle (a POST pickle dip), but I was wondering why she used a baking soda/water quench BEFORE she pickled. In my studies and experience, baking soda neutralizes pickle, so why use it before you pickle? I would think over time, the baking soda in the pre-pickle quench would ultimately reduce the effectiveness of the pickling process (bakig sida would migrate into the pickle from the quench). So, still no answer. But you are spot on about neutralizing pickle with baking soda. I imagine the perfect set-up would be a quench in plain water, pickles, then water/baking soda dip. Thanks again for jumping in to help.
@@flyingcheffsome 'experts' say to neutralise after soldering so the chemicals in the flux don't react with the pickle. I just wish I could remember where I read or heard that. So in an ideal world, you would solder, soda dip, clear water dip, pickle, soda dip, clear water dip, dry and use. If you ever find anyone who does that, I would be surprised. I would imagine the chemists around would tell us to use different solutions for each dip, so a line of bowls.
Oh also, sometimes I get a gap between my base plate and my bezel, because it wasn’t flat enough. Any tips on how to fix that? Just sand it after you solder it closed? Is there any way to fix it once you’ve made that mistake?
Sorry, yes, file/sand it flat. A piece of emery cloth or wet & dry laid flat on the bench, then work the bezel in a figure 8 pattern until there is no gap. If you are using fancy topped wire like Basia was, you can use a pencil eraser held flat on top to hold and move the bezel wire. Make sure the piece you are soldering to is flat. If you go back over Basias' videos, there are many tips & tricks films with hints like the eraser.
Would you be able to fix it after? De-solder, the base, flatten the base, and then re-solder.
Hiya Lady Stardust, you are looking good, as always... Thank you for the video, what great stones, I particularly love the Agat. I think I need those bezels on my bench and those Bench Basics? Yes, please. The lube does look awkward to apply, have you tried a broken saw blade? Even you must have some of them? I use them to apply the solder paste too. When you were cutting the bezel wire with tin snips I knew you'd be reaching for the saw soon, and I was right. Seeing you without a saw in hand doesn't look right somehow. Was the wire fine silver?
You certainly seem to get a lot of firescale prevention, a common moan about 'Fire Scoff' is the size of the bottle and how soon it runs out. Does postage cost a lot from the USA, and did you have to pay customs when you were here?

Haha, true, I feel weird without holding my saw for too long! I'm very excited about upcoming projects, as I will be sawing much more often. I just miss my big bench a lot, because it was more comfortable for sawing. I can't wait to bring it back to the workshop when I can.

Oh dear, you made me realise that I forgot to put one clip in the video! I was talking about the Fire Scoff. I've used it before and it's such a tiny bottle for a lot of money. And the bottle was leaking! So a lot of the product got wasted...
I'm not sure how much is postage from USA. I did pay some customs once, another time I didn't, so it's hard to predict.
Also, not a yoghurt, but a soup container! Hahaha 😂

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingHiya, close though, what was the soup? Something good knowing you. I've heard about leaking bottles too, I think I'll look into Pepes' soon. Typical that it also costs a lot too. Which one works better? From your video, I would guess that one from the coverage on the silver.
Have you used Argentium yet? 500mm of 2mm square wire the sterling was £3 cheaper, so very little difference. You don't get fire-scale due to there being less copper. They use Germanium, and it's 935 rather than 925, so more silver. No copper so it's hypoallergenic, another good sales point, but not re-cycled though. I think Cooksons have all the findings too, plus solder, H, M, E.

Do you use glue to make sure the stones stay in place or trust that the bezels will hold?
Most of the time I work with the bezel, making sure the fit is as good as possible. However, using glue isn't forbidden in jewelry making, I recommend reading about it here: orchid.ganoksin.com/t/to-glue-or-not-to-glue/31280/4
Basia, what is the colored nuts on your Haymaker? You bought them separately? My original ones give me a hard time!
