I'm thinking the best way to train the cat to avoid the area is to place a coffee can (or other object) over the electronic box/warning beeper. Only turn on the mat when the coffee can is in place and that cat will associate the coffee can with the shock not the mat itself. That way you can eventually stop leaving the mat out. It will take many, many months of training but the cat will eventually not even think about going in that direction when it sees the coffee can or other object.

People don't take the time and invest in their cats like people do with their dogs. My cat is so well-trained she's allowed in federal buildings.
