I haven't tried it myself but a friend used plastic protectors that you can buy to put on top of entryway mats. She put the bumpy side up. It didn't hurt her cats. They just didn't like the texture. She used them on her countertops and her furniture, using double-sided tape, draping them or tying them to keep them in place. She just moved them when she wanted to use the space and put them back after. Once her cats had developed the habit of using the cat scratchers, she removed the mats for longer and longer periods of time. If the cats showed any signs of interest, she covered the spot again and when she got new pieces of furniture, she'd drape them right away. Eventually, she was able to remove them completely. She said that it also worked with dogs.

I have a boy and a girl both 2 years old. My girl is a scratcher, my boy only scratches their cardboard scratcher. Last week I started teaching my girl No scratch whenever she scratches the kitchen cabinets next to their food bowl letting me know she wants food. She’s making a lot of progress and every time she does good I praise her and give them treats. Today she sat next to the food bowl and meowed at me! 😃
I’m also teaching her not to scratch my bedroom door when I’m sleeping. Now when she does scratch my door my boy cat will jump on her to make her stop! 😅

You can take the motion sensor off he ssscat can and use a small can of compressed air that you see at office supply stores to clean keyboards. You just have to turn the can w/the motion sensor upside down.
Also, I've never paid that much for the feliway spray. So it has probably jumped a lot in price recently. It's amazing, I used to pay around $12 for it.
The best thing I've used is the double sided tape, although the brand I used was whisker city I think and it was very cheap and came with a lot of strips.

I recently moved and the couch here happens to be the one where my first cat used to scratch up on. It always makes my heart feel full when I see my two newer kitties, scratching up the exact same spot :) Allowing them to do this is actually feels like a positive but I"d definitely try that KatSupreme tape on any future couches

I actually bought that pheromone spray to try and deter my cat from spraying (yes, he is neutered, no it is not a medical condition), and while I think it works (seems to anyway - he's kinda unpredictable in where he decides to spray since we clean everything up all the time), if you're allergic or perhaps were once allergic to cats (I was and then my body adjusted), I found that this spray actually bothered me respitoraly and made me cough. I'd always kind of noticed it, but once I put together a cat tree and spritzed it all over to make sure he didn't spray on it, I found myself coughing a lot more than normal and had to leave the room to recover. Just a random FYI!

Cats from my past never scratched furniture. These sisters do, with joy and abandon. It's easy to teach a cat where to scratch, but you have to start right away, before the habit takes hold. I'm old now, and lazy, and didn't do it this time. They use their post a lot but also had a blast shredding the couch. Now they have their eyes on the chair that would still pass if I covered it. Your video is the first one to offer a realistic solution, thank you. I didn't know they had such a thing! I've already ordered it. Maybe I'll get a new slipcover for Christmas (hint hint)!

to continue the door jambs or vertical and they're made of pine and had a molded design so now whenever I can find somebody who could send it right to repair it or or if it is not repairable I'll have to find someplace where they sell true Wood pinewood and then match the pattern to the rest of the doors and room.. so yes it is upsetting and I do need a big deterrent for this.. I have to put something on some of the other door jambs too should I use tape that's what I was already thinking about before I saw this video. I am going through so much right now I don't need any more problems and even though I love my cats Dearly, I'm upset with them doing this. I do care more about them than I do with the wall though door jambs. it's just that it's such a big job to repair.. So can that tape that you suggested in the beginning help this do you think?? Mallory, thanks for your help and your videos and I hope you'll be able to reply to this thank you

I am getting desperate, my cat scratches all the fabric furniture. I have scratchy poles which she doesn't use and I have tried the sticky mat with the pins attaching them. She is so intelligent she took the pins out with her teeth, thankfully I caught her doing it. She likes the cardboard scratchers but not the jute scratchy poles. I don't want to use sprays with her because she has an asthma problem. Do you have any other suggestions please. I know she is probably bored but has loads of toys which i rotate. I want to get another scratchy pole but only have a small space. What do you think?

I've got one of those SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Posts and 99.9% my cats won't scratch anything but the post, as I praise them EVERY time they use it. I can be in the kitchen and one will run into the middle room and can hear them scratching the post... and I'll loudly holler "SCRATCHY POST! SCRATCHY POST! Good Girl!".
They love the post so much that I even took one that was pretty used up over a couple of years and instead of tossing it in the trash, I took the bottom base off and laid it on it's side in my living room and they love to stand on it and scratch as well. Now one of my cats has this fascination with my laundry room in my apartment and I keep the door closed and she scratches at the corner of the carpet at the door. Thinking I might try the double sided tape recommended here to see if that helps any.

I saw a mat on Amazon once that had two options. One was the electric shock, which I didn't like the idea of, but the other was a loud sound. I thought that was better, sort of like the hiss of air, but I didn't buy it because I figured it would startle me more than the cats, especially when they set it off in the middle of the night.

Ssscat device and 1 can is 50 bucks. The canned air refill is $15. However, it can be refilled with a tire valve($3) and bike pump infinitely though. There's a tutorial on here. Well, making your own cat food is an option(at least supplement with it) if you eat meat and fish yourself cleaning animals yourself is much cheaper for you anyway and you can use fish carcasses, scraps from larger animals, lean organ meat like heart etc. And just make your own cat food with that, in case of carcasses boil it with some water till the bones get soft, then put it in jars and put them in hot water to pasteurize them, in case of scraps, or anything without bones just cut it up, put it in jars, fill up with some water or broth, maybe add a lil fish oil, close the glasses and put them in a hot water bath to get cooked directly in the glass, that way they don't go bad as fast. Alternatively just cook everything in a pot, package however you like and freze it. If you want to sustain your cat on this and not just supplement the regular cat food a quality vitamin and mineral mix would be crucial, ideally put the vitamins in before serving cause heat stability and shelf life are limited, while with minerals that's really a non issue

So disappointed that the ssscat spray is so expensive and there aren’t really many similar reliable alternatives, not to mention all the reviews I read on it are terrible, saying it broke immediately after purchase or ran out way too quickly. I looked into it a while ago to try to keep our cat away from the front door while we are not at home, as when he gets bored he goes up to the door and tries to jiggle the handle and open it. Our front door only has a handle lock (no deadbolt) and by doing this he could easily open it and let himself or the dog out. I’d love a video for products or ways to keep cats away from off-limits areas such as this or off counter tops.

Thats like a no sound for them, coming from a asian background we mainly use noises and clicks (like the language the african bushmans speak) click click clak clak oop broop.. jk half jking haha. When I was a child, my dad had an accident with his power saw. The accident cost him three of his fingers. When he returned home from the hospital, the first words out of his mouth were these: "There is no use in crying over spilled milk". Even my cat can understand the meaning of these words. You people act like I have purposely damaged my cat. You would think that I had requested the vet to remove her front legs. Do what my dad did... Grow up, get a life and get over it. Mine is the happiest cat in the world. My leather couch is happy too.

One trip to the vet and voila! Problem solved. (I know I am going to get hammered for this comment)

Then why say it and look like an animal abuser?

I hope that you meant that you asked your vet to find a new home for your poor cat!

@@doggolovescheese1310 Actually, the veterinarian who preformed the surgery is the abuser. I am just the owner who no longer has to put up with the feline version of assault with bodily injury or willful destruction of private property.

@@doggolovescheese1310 And look like an animal abuser to who? Apparently you have mistaken me for someone who cares about what some left wing, snowflake has to say.
I "rescued" this cat, from the pound, over eleven years ago. She is an indoor only cat and we love each other very much.

@@ethicscannie5716 Nope. I "rescued" this cat, from the pound, over eleven years ago. She is an indoor only cat and we love each other very much. Her toes are a bit shorter but she gets around at lightning speed. No harm done except in YOUR mind.
