Productivity with the rest of the eco system, but I'd rather wait for a Vision Air/SE with a much lower price tag.

Not at all. I hate the idea of wearing something like this which would feel claustrophobic and probably also make me feel dizzy. Not just Vision Pro, but any type of AR/VR headset is a turn-off for me.

No, because I know I can't afford it right now. And I've lived through enough Apple product launches to know not to buy the 1st generation as a better, cheaper one is usually not far behind.

No, never ever. Of course it has these small „wow“ moments, like these gimmicks with walking dinosaurs or a virtual F1 car. But after the wow?
If you are not working in the CAD business or other work where it is important to create a virtual world (or you like computer games) this device makes no sense. I would buy a new MacBook and a new iPad and I am more able to do my daily work. And I don't have to take my glasses off.

A load of people are returning because they can’t afford it, and others just had it to make a video. They never intended to own it. They wanted to be part of the hype within the 14 days return window.

I think weight and price are the primary items to address. Since we have to walk around with a battery pack, why not put all of the electronics and everything you can with the battery pack, then make the headset out of Carbon Fiber or something super light or dare I say plastic. Make it as thin and light as possible. Also better integration with Macs so you can break out windows into their own individual windows and not jailed into a Mac screen. Great article Mark!!

It’s interesting tech but despite all the good stuff it still seems more gimmicky than every day functional at the moment. You’ve made excellent points that hopefully Apple will address eventually in about 3 or 4 years if you go by the iPhone etc

    • @JonasViatte
      @JonasViatte 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Honestly they need to fix that "iPhone incompatibility" thing in the next 3 or 4 weeks, not years! People are all talking about how this is a gen 1 product and how the next will be better, but forget that Apple can make over the air updates, and definitely need to do so, before launching in Europe and the rest of the world, else the product's reputation will drop quickly as people stop using it. I'm pretty sure they're smart enough to fix everything they can through software quickly.
As for the weight, I think it'll be ok because third party manufacturers will quickly create accessories that will make it more comfortable.

Another very entertaining video. Personally, I’m really looking forward to the UK launch. I’ve had various VR headsets since 2016 (Rift, Vive and then Quest 2 and 3). I think the Quest 3 is a great device, especially for games but I’m not greatly into games. I will admit I’m a bit of an Apple fan and I’m sure this Gen 1 AVP will develop quickly with OS upgrades and more content. The Watch and the iPad were not wonderfully received at first but both are now great products. For me, I’ll be extremely happy with film and movie content but especially 3D. That will satisfy me until more content comes along.

ive had my vision since day one... my thoughts are: as far as comfort, the light seal is to ridged and moves your face to far from the device, creating the discomfort. it needs to be re engineered to something softer less ridged, second, yes some sort of iPhone support would be nice. I find myself having to take it off read my screen...lastly envronments, we still have 2 that have not been unlocked. as of typing we are on beta 1.1 v3,,, there needs to be faster push out of updates, its still and unfinished product. the magical thing about the vision,,, the Mac connectivity so far anyway, ive steamlined my desk way down,,

And scary, because a lot of Apples well-experienced engineers are involved to create such a thing.

FWIW, if you have an Apple Watch (which it looks like you do) you can allow it to unlock your iPhone when FaceID fails (i.e., when you've got the Vision Pro on).

@@MarkEllisReviews No, but it does help to have the iPhone positioned towards the center of your field of view, either by raising the phone or tilting your head down. When it's near the edges of your field of view, it turns to jelly. 😆

That's what Apple wants you to do and I do own Apple products. You must buy Mac to use it with AVP instead of VisionOS being based on macOS so you don't have to spend your money on Mac. List goes on and on.

In my opinion, lack of use cases, size and weight plus the price is why so many are bing returned. A few years from now, sure. But it’s too new and too limited I believe.

  • @JonasViatte
    @JonasViatte 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Lots of ideas (give us a functional USB port, allow us to pin apps to the view...), but the main one, I would say, is MAKE IT LESS ISOLATING.
2 people in the same room both wearing their expensive headsets should definitely be able to share the view of any app, or all the apps if they wish. In 2 clicks they should be able to watch a movie together etc. Just in the same way as if you were both watching a screen together. Same for sharing the view with anyone on another Apple device, and it should be almost as easy if the person happens to not be in the same space.
Together experiences would go a long way to convincing people who are reluctant to this kind of tech.

    • @JonasViatte
      @JonasViatte 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Also Apple could make a few changes that would make all VisionOS reviews look much better:
      1. Screen recording stabilization
      2. Get rid of that stupid flashing white screen when someone is making a screen recording
      3. This might be a bit more challenging but would make for the most beautiful-looking reviews: If videos of someone wearing a VP, filmed using an iPhone, would show the person AND the screens around them. Then people could make videos similar to what Apple presented in their keynote. Would be the best marketing move they could make.
2nd best marketing move they could make is give us a functional (for data/accessories) USB port. That way
      1. You'd have professionals starting to use it, for photography, cinematography etc. And making reviews about this.
      2. You'd have DJs starting to use it in their setup, with thousands of eyeballs on them. I remember seeing DJs with a Mac on their desk and thinking "ah ok so this tech is reliable enough to have a whole show depend on it". They need to create this same feeling in people with the Vision Pro
Edit: Currently it's useless for music creation because you can't plug in a simple audio interface or latency-free microphone because it has NO USB

While appreciate the humor of this video, not sure I agree with a number of your complaints
    1. Get a deeper coffee cup with a smaller diameter. Yes as the cup empties, it does take tilting your head (instead of the cup) to drain the cup...not an issue
    2. The cord. Put the battery in your pocket first and then put the headset on. Not a big issue.
    3. I'm bald and use the dual loop band. I've adjusted the band once and that's it. You can slip the unit on and off your head without needing to re-adjust.
    3. Agreed that it is heavy. I've had it on for 4-5 hours with not much of an issue. YMMV.
    4. iPhone integration. Agreed current work arounds suck..
    5. Picking it up.. Another non-issue. Pick it up by the loop band and any other portion of the device.
    Keep up the good work.

I did a demo this week and the weight resting on my nose was killer in just 15 minutes. My Quest 3 is just much more comfortable and for PC productivity the only way to go. Maybe around gen 2 or 3 I’ll jump in. Besides, it’s just too expensive right now for what is essentially an iPad strapped to your face.

More than one virtual Mac display. Having 3 virtual displays for a macbook would be great for productivity. Right now it's limited to a single (albeit massive) display. Or I'd settle for an ultrawide curved virtual display, like my real world desk monitor.

There is far too much friction with other Apple devices. We should be able to unlock our iPhone using Optic ID in the Vision Pro. Then you should be able to mirror the screen as you suggested, but this should apply to iPhone and iPad.
Pass through in general needs massive improvements. Being better than the Quest 3 doesn’t cut it, everything is still very pixelated and text is blurry.
There also has to be compelling reasons to use the Vision Pro over our other devices and I’m not seeing them yet. Immersive videos are cool for a demo, but that doesn’t make this worth keeping for me.

I suppose the main question is will Vision Pro be the start of Apple taking computing in a new direction? Will Macs or iPhones be updated to work with Vision Pro or vice versa? This is the beginning. Maybe when we get the Vision Pro that we can all use and in the same way we just use our Macs and iPhones the video will be presented by both yourself and your son, Mark?! I hope Apple persist with it.

It’s really amazing for watching movies especially if you use the cinema mode in Apple +, but a bit lack luster for working with a Mac. I still prefer my physical 42” display to the Vision Pro virtual display. If they allowed multiple virtual Mac monitors that would be a game changer. As it is I’m on the fence about returning it because $4000 is a lot just to watch movies.

I would not care if people think it is weird. I grew a thick skin in the pandemic, as I still wore a mask when basically nobody else wore one any more. Some people even got angry at me. My though is that I am not weird, but the only normal person left.
The only thing that would bother me is that is an Apple product. I would not want to be seen with an Apple product.

Watching this at the beginning of June and all information on Vision Pro seems to have dried up after the initial flurry of videos from everyone.. What are your thoughts three months on? Did it wow you for a week and then it was too much hassle?
    Some thoughts:
    • You mentioned about the weight and let's not forget that there is the inconvenience of an external battery pack. The thing that struck me when this came out was 'this is likely the back end of 10+ years of research and this is the best they could do', That would suggest that a move to reduce weight and improve the experience may take far longer than a couple of revisions
    • It looks like a horrible isolated experience. I hate that many people are buried in their phones. Anything more isolating really makes me uncomfortable
    • With the exception of the immersive video it looks like everything is easier to do on any other device
    • Immersive video isn't enough of a killer app. I don't know what is and VR has been around for decades in many forms and we're still searching for one
    • I fear that as good and clever as the technology is that like a lot of VR headsets, it'll be a wow moment for a few days than it'll gather dust on a shelf
I guess we'll see what they say about any updates at WWDC but my money's going nowhere near it.
Look forward to a follow up video

Vision Pro is a good value for its money depending on how you look at it. It provides me a much better viewing experience than my $3000 85 in tv. It provides a screen size that I would never be able to afford. It provides a large portable monitor for me to use with my macbook anywhere, and it’s a computer on its own if needed. I recently had a family member in the hospital, and I was there every day with them for around 3 days. While they were sleeping, I was able to watch movies on a giant screen, and the audio was great for me but not enough to disturb them. I also have a quest 3, and a pair of Viture glasses. While both of those work too, they do not provide the same media experience that the Vision Pro does, though they do provide an experience that is around 40% as good for 14% of the cost. I think they are certainly worth their cost though.

The only thing I would like to have as of now a VR for is watching movies probably 3D movies. BTW the competition is there soon so eventually probably sooner than we think they have to lower the price. Imagine some similar quality display with probably a little bit less fancy less bling bling outside with an open source OS compatible with everything. And it probably could even cooperate with the iPhone as well :D

Thanks Mark, another informative video, entertaining too, had a laugh when you rushed back inside less someone saw you with the headset on, but to be serious for a moment, I watched other videos where TH-camrs were wearing them in New York of all places on the streets, talk about taking your own life in your hands, me thinks Apple should have a disclaimer out about this,
that while the Vision Pro is a device for the future, that for the user's own safety and the safety of others, That the headset should only be used when it is safe to do so (in the home - office - safe surrounds) it's only going to take one mishap then well you know what I mean, and look I don't want to sound like a wet blanket and be all negative, but safety should be first priority then enjoyment
Anyway great video as always Mark, and as I have said always what I write is only my opinion.

This product is the equivalent of car companies making their concept cars!... This is what we can make, but we're not going to sell it! Apple has let itself down by making and selling this headset. They should have made it to showcase what they can do, and that's it. If companies think that products like these have a use for outdoor activities, then they're absolutely nuts. Americans will use them outdoors because they are all nuts. 😂😂

The cost is definitely a factor for me. The tech may be "worth it," but with $3,499 to spend, I'd rather get a powerful MacBook Pro and accessories. That would seem so much more useful for my use case - at least right now. Maybe one day soon spatial computing will become so much more attractive that it would be inefficient to NOT use it, but right now, it just seems like a neat gimmick. It's cool, of course. Don't get me wrong. But I just don't think it offers enough to truly be worth it for most people right now. At least not for me.

Keep in mind that the product's name ends with "PRO". At this time, Apple needs reviewers, and even more so developpers, to get access to the full feature set in order to start the ball rolling for the category by generating interest (buzz) and getting apps done asap. If you compare the price ratio of other Apple products between the "mini/air" versions and the "pro" versions, the price of a more basic model would likely be somewhere between 50% and 75% of the price of the vision PRO. It would also be reasonable to expect the basic version to have fewer (weighty) features and thus be lighter. Everything that can evolve by software update (i.e. iPhone integration) will happen given enough time. Apple vision for the rest of us will eventually come and should address most if not all of the initial gripes. That being said, Apple will remain true to its objective with this product, which is not strictly AR nor VR. Those, as well as games, are but a subset of features that will yield to other (dare I say more serious) priorities.

If you want to have fun testing out playing with AR/VR then get a Quest 3. It does everything the AVP does and more, all for around 3500 less... Sure the screens on the Quest 3 aren't as sharp (though you get a bigger FOV) but for $499 the Quest 3 is fantastic...

Example: I put on my vision pro after work I see a friend is logged on watching an NBA game ping him,he invites me in and I suddenly appear in his space and we are watching the game together interacting like we would if we were in the same space physically.

Is it fair to say this device could really help productivity for people doing corporate jobs who benefit from multiple high res monitors e.g Excel on a screen, emails, word, teams meeting for great multi-tasking. £3.5K surely isnt a bad price for a M2 plus unlimited monitors. I don’t really believe this is supposed to replace phones as some have said, i think its an alternative to the Mac like the Ipad Pro is. If you go around the city, everyone whos moved a few places up the ladder has an Ipad Pro and I think they will buy this too for corporate work at home.

You don't see Brits wearing the Apple Vision Pro out in the wild because it's not available there yet. Between the AVP and Meta Quest, the Vision Pro resembles more of ski goggles than a three-slit, alien-looking eyepiece, so I don't think the AVP looks weird at all. While the VP is heavy, the front glass is quite durable in a durability drop test. Yes, hot drinks are terrible with any HMD, but that should be solved in about the next two generations. The biggest drawback is the price, but as a reminder, Apple never intended this for the average consumer. To invigorate a stagnant new category, Apple presented the best technology they can muster at the moment rather than a mediocre device to keep the flame burning. Finally, most AVP purchasers are not AR/VR-experienced users, and that's why most of them are returning after they make their trending video before the 14-day return limitation. This is just my observation.

Apple now produces excellent MacBook Airs but the first one was really not good value for money or a good experience. AVP may make it or not. I agree that at £3,5K will never become a mass product the way the iPhone or iPad is. The moment a competitor’s product comes along with a vastly better experience, comfort and price, that’s it for AVP.

i think the story is simple and very iPhone-like. Back then Apple took mobile phone, a communication device that with today's tech could be done under $100, run for weeks on one charge with eInk display etc. They changed the _meaning_ of the word. A phone today is an entertainment / multimedia device, nobody is laughing anymore about the price because you get cameras, 3D games, movies, etc - and you see marks on the pavement begging you to look up before stepping on the road.
_AVP moves the AR/VR thing to an arena where Apple is sure it will win in the long run,_ they have the tech, they have the dev capacity, ecosystem and loyal customers. _All the issues are caused by this conscious decision:_ not allowing you to see through the device in front of your eyes. I pray for the impossible: to see them stepping back to an open battlefield, of the see-through glasses. It's OK if they go on with AVP for those who really want to isolate themselves behind, but please, _create an Apple glass._ That could be much less weird, lighter, easy to pick up (and even sturdy), no issue with the battery, camera-display path and even the coffee mug. That is something I have been waiting for decades and know what I want to do with it...

3500 is because all tech in headset. If you want make it cheaper, then it will miss some tech. Less sensors. Lower resolution.

@@MarkEllisReviews No, I haven’t used the AVP yet. I live in Canada, but hope to at least try it out (maybe a trip to the States-side soon). My worry is that if I try it on, I’ll walk out of the store with it, and my wife will *kill me*…
My issue is that the argument that you propose (drinking a great cup of cafe - I too, love a good cafe and am a bit of an aficionado when it comes to coffee), is a weak one. The rest of your points, I’d tend to see the merit, and probably lean to agreeing. The thing I feel is that, this is a new device - a new paradigm, if you will. That comes with certain challenges and new ways of doing things. Of course, coffee might not be an important issue to most people, but it is to you (and I - as I’ve mentioned). With that, if you want to enjoy a cafe, then that might mean removing the device, taking a breather, letting your eye rest, drinking your cafe, and then getting back to work with the goggles on.
I get that TechTubers are supposed to push the boundaries and test the tech that they review (and I appreciate it! It makes for great content). But wearing the AVP for 24h, or walking the streets (to your point), or not taking it off to put on a shirt is *not* what this is supposed to be for. In the manual booklet,  clearly states to take frequent breaks. If they’ve worked on this for years and years, and (I am sure) their legal team stated that putting that disclaimer is a must, then there must be something to it.
I’m not here to argue with you, someone I truly admire for what you do (as I’ve said, I appreciate what you do for my enjoyment), but all I’m saying is, take a break, and take the head set off, and enjoy your cafe. Or use a straw. But I agree with you. I would not use a straw either.
