hi just to come back at this to say that i will be fitting roof lights(led strip lights) in all of mine soon but wire "plug in connections" (a bit like the wire connections in the end units) at each end of the coaches so power will be picked up at the end and motor coaches whilst the wires branching of in every coach for the lighting and power to any other stuff
The reason it’s called Dr Who stems to the unit’s name- Voyagers. You can tell where it goes from there, considering some of the other units have names like Louis Bleriot and Marco Polo.
Your right, when Arriva CrossCountry took over the original virgin cross-country route they also took over all of the 4-car voyagers and a select few of the super voyager 5-car units. 'Dr Who' was one of the chosen sets - it could still have existed with its name as Virgin do keep some for their west coast services, but it wasn't to be. When sold at auction one of the nameplates went for £5000.
I bought this off ebay. It said brand new unopened undamaged on box or train. So I buy it for the £144 it gets here the box is torn the shreads and opened. I go comment on it and then bitch at the guy for 5 minutes straight xD
@InterCity82 well it will be my voyager then all of them after a while and i might make a tutorial but only troubble dont know what connecters to use or what ones they are (i want some like the ones in the end carridges that connect to the end units)
@rondahl18 - I'm not sure what the difference is. But I think you're about 8 or 9 hours ahead of the UK, so therefore, you would need to wait 8 to 9 hours AFTER you're 6:00pm.
@MrPeople1098 - it seems to be hit and miss. The first model we got had a beautifully smooth motor but broken flywheel! Then the replacement has a noisy motor and flawed tilting mechanism. My experience with the Class 221 Voyager from Bachmann is not a good one.

Shame really, because "Doctor Who" is a brilliant name for a train. They should have re-named it or kept its name, I would love to see a train called "David Tennant" :P - Will :)
if you got a little eletromagnec on the coupler and wired it up on a dcc decoder(it might work just some thing i was thinking about) you would be able to couple up to each other.

i still think Hornby or Bachmann should do a model of Jeremy Clarkson's sports train or James and Richards train from Top Gear. i would HAVE to buy that.
does the voyager tilt like the Pendolino does can you when you have made your board or your temporary layout can you do the Pendolino and Voyager running round the layout if you can.
I bought a voyager and had the following problems with it: It was incredibly hard to fit DCC. It didn't do well on curves and often derailed and that had to be regularly sorted The lights flicker even though it's DCC, It's a shame because it's such a lovely model
I go Toymaster becuase thats my nearest train shop, but sadly only do Hornby I want this train but not its sold out in ehattons lets hope it comes back in stock fingers cross

Indeed, numbers only started being used when we had too many to easily name. So maybe it's because of that - heritage and history in other words?
I absolutely love this train ive always wanted to ride one but i cant but i hope i get on one soon they are brilliant and to have one on your layout with the pendolino is stunning cant wait for part 2 and 3 ps try being the clever person and try and couple 2 units up :)

This is so nostalgic.. I remember going up to Preston years and years ago, hoping to see ‘Dr Who’ pull into the platforms after watching this video.

@rugeley123 they use a small plastic rod that slots into little sockets at the end of each unit.
@HobbyFiend - the Voyager is a DMU and the Pendolino is an EMU.

221122 is on the Aberdeen to Penzance Line, which us on Cross Country. It is not called Doctor Who anymore.

@Grimlock257 a DMU is a diesel multiple unit. a EMU is a electric multiple unit
@bowringADB - I doubt it. I'm basing my new layout on a North West region. The 395 Javelin runs in the complete opposite corner of the country.
i might consider buying a voyager after seeing this they are just smart models
@vickraj14 yes the class 221 can be coupled to another class 221 they did this recently at leeds station to alow for a easier service

I have memory's of being cramped From Wolverhampton to Birmingham NEC on Cross Country's Voyager.

You're right! When Arriva took over the CrossCountry franchise, they ripped off the nameplates on all teh Voyagers.
@ipodwindow, I got mine second hand from a model shop in Cheltenham. They sold me it for like £55. But for my small layout it is more than big enough.
Ive got the conventional class 220 voyager from bachmann and thats a really good runner
@1978tricia you need 3x 8pin decoders, one for the motor and one in each end.
I've noticed the cab unit doesnt have the destination display that they're meant to have

yeah i see these trains everyday and i go on the virgin pendolino loads of times. Its not called dr who anymore and they do work with cross country

Im pretty sure only two carriges of docter who remain and it waits on one of the southbound bay platforms (i think) at crewe station
@Whizzer1 - the Voyager is at it's maximum length. In real life they either come in blocks of 4 or blocks of 5 and this is a 5 car one :)

thats the weird thing about the bachmann voyagers they have the motors in one of the carridges not at the front but in the middle

a really nice looking train is the southern class 171, you can actually buy them from bachmann, it is very similar to the class 170
the didgital display is in the wrong colour! its usually orange!

Hi Will did this come DCC ready as Hattons list it as no DCC plugs fitted.

I would recommend it to someone that is happy to only ever run it in DC or someone that is willing to DCC her, which isn't easy.
I have got one but when i got it the motor would not pull all 5 cars.I oilled the motor and gears and ran her in again & she pulled them
i can only take cross country trains where i live and i have been on a docter who train but it was a class 220

She is still running but her nuber is 221 136 and the number you said is the x country one
