This very set was my inspiration to expand my layout from a small loop to a larger properly detailed one. The smooth livery especially gave me nostalgia as a child that I just don't feel with the new Avanti livery we have now.
Omg I remember watching this when I was younger about 6-7 years old and has always gotten to my imagination with having one of these expensive trains back 12 years ago, and I stg I want to go back to these times :(
greetings from Aussieland .I have watched just about all your reviews and loved them all i have actually taken your advice and bought some. Thanks for doing these it is a great help for those like me who are getting back into railroading cheers cobber
when i was little the very first real vehicle other than i car was an american BNSF freight train parked right outside my house. since then i have been in love with any sort of vehicle that runs on rails. i have some model trains but not the best type of track. when i saw the night mail review i started watching more and more of your videos. keep on going Intercity82
@Thegiaxio - glad you liked the video! Actually, the Eurostar is not as high quality as the Pendolino and the cab doesn't even have a floor in it. Plus it runs exclusively between London and the continent - no where near where I plan to base my layout on.
@HevyTH1 - my Pendolino was DCC fitted so I never had to install the chip. All I can tell you is that a chip is needed in both ends, and it has to be an 8 PIN chip like the R8249 from Hornby.
@2009Buzza - I have to mention running in so that people who might not have seen any of my previous videos know about it. But yes, this model has been ran in.
I am so going to get my dad to buy me this! I already have a Trans pennine Express and a cross country and a virgin Voyager and I need a virgin for my set! Thank you for posting this!! 😁
Yes I agree, but I think you have to give credit where credit's due. Hornby chase after a slightly broader range of customer than Bachmann. 99% of everyone I know into trains, got into trains via a Hornby train set - not a Bachmann one. Without getting into the hobby in the first place, there would be very few customers for Bachmann, or any of the other makes too. I started with Hornby, as did countless millions of others, and added Bachmann to the collection when I was old enough.
@Virgintrainsuk - the normal lenght of a railway is hundreds of miles long too! I'm fed up of people that are obsessed with having the scale equivalent of the right number of cars. If I had all 9, the nose would be chasing the tail. Even on a big layout, it would look kinda silly to see something soooooo big going round. And the station would have to be sooooo long that it would take up tons of space, so all you'd have is one giant station and a bit of grass. I'm perfectly happy with 6 units.
@pyronathanpyro - haha yes! true! Maybe they will do something like that in time? I am going to host a live session soon, however. So maybe that can be when people ask me questions live. :)
@bluerapier1 - to go digital you need DCC equipped trains and a DCC controller. The BEST way to start is to buy a Hornby DIGITAL set - that will give you everything you need to get going.
If you get a second hand dummy unit and fit a coupler to the front you can do the pendolino being dragged by the thunderbird like you see on the north wales coast to holyhead.
@2009Buzza - I think the APT in the 80s used a system like that but this model uses a much simpler method, where the bogie, as it turns, basically forces the body of the coach to roll to one side slightly.
@capmodesty - that video is still coming - indeed there are two now, one more complicated than the other. They are in a queue (which is about 40 videos big) but I've stopped making new ones until this queue is down to nothing. So won't be long.
@Mrlego2011 - I'm sorry but right now my railway is in bits (re-decorating) and so I couldn't review it even if I wanted to or had to. The video on the Voyager won't be up for some weeks yet due to how many other videos I've got to get done first. But someone else may have done one?
@InterCity82 , If you look up "Railworks Pendolino", you'll see Railworks train simulator videos, many videos of Pendolinos aren't in the Virgin livery. The Pendolinos wear fictional liveries suchs as GNER, InterCity Swallow, and the original 1997 Virgin livery. This is where I got the inspiration for an 00 Scale InterCity Pendolinos.
@gtacrusher123 - to put it another way, it's possible to get a huge articulated lorry down a country lane, but it's not recommended. The Pendolino will go round 2nd radius curves but only just and it will not like them. It will let you know this by squeaking, by almost de-railing and by looking very unrealistic.
@legoboy70 - I do have one DCC sound fitted loco and will be doing a video on her soon but she has been customed chipped. The best way when it comes to realistic sound :)
@TheIntercityhst - if the train is DCC ready then removing the chip will be easy, and then it'll be DC again. But if the train wasn't DCC ready then the person will have soldered wires to wires, making it much more difficult to 'un-DCC'. It's best to leave DCC trains as DCC and just run them on a DCC layout. If you see a train you want that's DCC only and you don't have DCC, then you could always buy it and wait until you have a DCC controller.
@TZProdutionz - I assume by 'thing' you mean the layout and by 'up' you mean have it at waist height on basebaords? Well, this layout is only a temporary one. The proper layout will be on baseboards at waist height.
@FatalMistake465 - I'm not sure to be honest, and can't check at the moment as they've been put away for re-decorating. But I'm sure if you do a google image search and zoom in on a photo of one you may be able to see if they do or not.
@Whizzer1 - possibly not. That would require a HUGE station and I don't really want a station that long. But who knows :) For now I'm very happy with it being a 6 car set.
@leeham991 - possibly - but I don't recommend it. If you MUST run a DCC loco on a DC layout, remove the chip first, making the loco DC for the time being and re-fit the chip after.
i've noticed that Hornby haven't got the pendolino accurate enough with the first class cuz it says first class above the window but doesn't have a number one in between the windows that are towards the ends on each first class coaches in which the real pendolino does
@InterCity82 find the CG of the un powered driving car, then pick up the powered car in the same place, it will then lean one way or the other depending on where the heavy bogie is
@Hornby09c - mine hasn't derailed once. Check what's going on when she actually derails - so get in close, really close and watch what happens as it derails and where it derails.
@Hartsock91 - the two kinda are interchangeable - but i DO NOT recommend it. They are much happier sticking to their own controller. and most people have at least one DC controller anyway, so if you have a DCC one too, it's just a case of unplugging one and plugging in the other - simple. Done. :)
@sammyjammywammy - The DCC-ready version of this train needs a chip in each end. Both chips would need to be 8-pin chips. You can get basic ones that only control lights and not a motor, but in my experience I have found such chips to be more expensive than a fully functioning one. So you might as well just buy 2 basic Hornby ones for about £10 each and the job is done.
@sammo2826 - I'm sure they will. Re-tooling is an expensive process, and results in expenesive models. If Hornby alienated its younger buyers it would suffer considerably. The overall market would then shrink, fewer people would enter the hobby and there'd be less money available for Heljan and Bachmann to make special locomotives like the HS 4000 and Blue Pullman. Right now, all 4 big companies compliment each other quite well and the market is booming.
if you look on his channel he does have a video i think im not 100% sure but im almost sure as i have been with his channel for a while now so look and i think he does :) infact im sure will has done a bit of information about this with the i think '' mixed good set '' of something that is a digital one its one of his latest reviews
There are two Pendolino sets available. One is DC and one is DCC. If you get the DC one, you can buy two DCC chips to make it DCC when you want to. If you buy the DCC one then it means they have already put the DCC chips in at the factory and you don't have to do a thing.
I really want to get into DCC, but Only one of my locos is DCC-ready and the other two are A1x terriers, which are tiny locos, the chip is nearly the diameter of the boiler!
@Thegiaxio - I wanted a set to introduce me to the world of digital control, I also wanted a Virgin Pendolino, plus I saw this on sale for £120 - the rest is history. ;)
@gtacrusher123 - she'll go round 2nd radius but won't like it. Really she needs 3rd radius or even 4th or even just gentle flexi-track curves. Basically the softer - the better.
@Xantec - it's been a long time since I've had to open this train up actually - but the motor is definitely in one of the ends, either above the lead or trailing bogie.
This dude is the reason i fell in love with model trains and this is the first video i watched
Memories, oh memories. This was one of the first YT videos that I ever watched, way back in 2011-13-ish
LMFAO same i was like 5
Same
Same this was actually the first vid I watched
Yeah same

This was one of the first TH-cam videos I ever saw and you should be proud it was one of yours.

Love it..."this is the main driving unit as you can tell by the weight" 🤣 had me in stitches 👍 looks like a stunning set though!
I'v got this train set for my 18th birthday last year. what a train set it was and still is my favorite one too.
@Thegiaxio - glad you liked the video! Actually, the Eurostar is not as high quality as the Pendolino and the cab doesn't even have a floor in it. Plus it runs exclusively between London and the continent - no where near where I plan to base my layout on.

You were the first channel I stuck to. That alone and the quality has me subbed

Man, this gives so much memories.
@Trainmaster111 - it has a connection for the track, a connection for accessories and a socket for the power cable.
@RCProductionable - just pop the casing off. It won't snap so long as you're careful.
God this brings nostalgia from when i used to watch you many years ago
I Like this train, I see them all the time going from Stoke station to Crewe these and DMUs.
@fulf1 - this particular set cost anywhere from £120 to £220 depending on where you buy it.
@Virgintrainsuk - the normal lenght of a railway is hundreds of miles long too! I'm fed up of people that are obsessed with having the scale equivalent of the right number of cars. No one else on youtube could do such a high quality vid other than you, Will. 11/10!
@pyronathanpyro - haha yes! true! Maybe they will do something like that in time? I am going to host a live session soon, however. So maybe that can be when people ask me questions live. :)
I have the Alstom set, I've been watching for the last 3 years

@roden81 - a 9 car set would require a very long station on my proper layout, and I don't want a station that long. So it'll probably stay as 6.
Make sure its wheels and the track are spotless!
Love the videos, you got me buying the Virgin Pendolino and going DCC. I am very New to all this again.
@capmodesty - that video is still coming - indeed there are two now, one more complicated than the other. They are in a queue (which is about 40 videos big) but I've stopped making new ones until this queue is down to nothing. So won't be long.

@IgotPMT - lol, thanks - glad you like it. I'll make sure the vids stay good and keep coming!
@InterCity82 , If you look up "Railworks Pendolino", you'll see Railworks train simulator videos, many videos of Pendolinos aren't in the Virgin livery. you make by far the best video's on you tube! love the 82 animation!
You can buy the DC one for about £100 if you look around. Well worth it!
I do need to do that again - yes!
I had this then sold it for the Alstom pendolino train set. I love the Alstom branding.
It's up to you. I run mine on the floor, as I am too tall to stand in my attic!
@TheStuntManAlf - there is no title for it yet, not until it is uploaded but it'll obviously have 'layout' in the title
@TZProdutionz - I assume by 'thing' you mean the layout and by 'up' you mean have it at waist height on basebaords? Well, this layout is only a temporary one. The proper layout will be on baseboards at waist height.
@TheStuntManAlf - videos on the proper layout are, like many of my videos, already made and in a queue. They should be live before Christmas
so smooth!! and the tilt is amazing
I will check out your channel tomorrow over breakfast!
@TheMoonWentBoom - this is only a temp layout - a proper one is on its way
@leeham991 - possibly - but I don't recommend it. If you MUST run a DCC loco on a DC layout, remove the chip first, making the loco DC for the time being and re-fit the chip after.
@leftmid18 - I'm not sure Check Trident Trains. He has a good range of N-gauge models.
i've noticed that Hornby haven't got the pendolino accurate enough with the first class cuz it says first class above the window but doesn't have a number one in between the windows that are towards the ends on each first class coaches in which the real pendolino does
This is so good well done man
@MegaTrainlover - because I have both this set and the Mixed Goods set which are both digital sets.
@itgamer100 - I think I have about 270 items of rolling stock now - must get that database finished
@Tirionblade - the Pendolino is much better, purely because it is newer. The Eurostar is quite old now and showing signs of age.
@suncoolclose - I'll be sticking to 6 units thank you :)
I have yes but am in no rush to get it.
@InterCity82
find the CG of the un powered driving car, then pick up the powered car in the same place, it will then lean one way or the other depending on where the heavy bogie is
@Whizzer1 - yeah, demand was high for me to review it - so I did
Now watching this when the Avanti pendolinos are out and are more expensive just for the train pack then this as the whole set.
@HSTdesire it was ordered from Amazon I think
I am getting this train for my birthday!
@tpe18509 - she will run on 2nd radius and above :)
wot you said about the coupling will... its the same as the javelin so u could always create a javelino! lol. gr8 vid m8!
I am fine with just my one Pendolino for now.
I love your work
thanks for the comment!
@Hornby09c - mine hasn't derailed once. Check what's going on when she actually derails - so get in close, really close and watch what happens as it derails and where it derails.

@SmashBangCrash - this set comes in 2 'flavours'. DC and DCC. Run the DC one on DC track and the DCC one on DCC track. Simple.
@Class66Rocks - I have but I'll be in no rush to get it :)
@InterCity82 if you put it into reverse on bends i find the wheels tend to spin helplessly
If only the motor was underneath the pantograph it would be great
Nice, I was only wondering because I'm starting my model layout again!! ;) basically using your track layout as one line DC and the other DCC
verry nice layout there !
@sammo2826 - I'm sure they will. Re-tooling is an expensive process, and results in expenesive models. If Hornby alienated its younger buyers it would suffer considerably. You can connet the high speed southeastern 395 with those couplings
it is amazing detail for a hornby set.
its pretty easy to get on the tracks near my house, there's an un-barriered level crossing!
Great Video, I am doing a large rebuild of my main Depot on my layout
Make sure the bends are not too tight. And make sure the bogies are not too tight or too lose.
Most impressive. Next on my list once I get space to start building an actual layout :P
@CONCORDE444 - contact Hornby. They have a repair and replace service.
haha thanks for the feedback!
@GreatRailwayJourneys - I'm happy with the ones I have for now lol - I can only just park them! :)
I really want to get into DCC, but Only one of my locos is DCC-ready and the other two are A1x terriers, which are tiny locos, the chip is nearly the diameter of the boiler!
@Thegiaxio - I wanted a set to introduce me to the world of digital control, I also wanted a Virgin Pendolino, plus I saw this on sale for £120 - the rest is history. ;)
Definitely!
Great review
Great video
@gtacrusher123 - she'll go round 2nd radius but won't like it. Really she needs 3rd radius or even 4th or even just gentle flexi-track curves. Basically the softer - the better.
Such a beautiful train I use to own one which I sadly miss
@Mamodman - there are no plans to get the Eurostar - but a user called Streamlinedtrains has reviewed it
@Xantec - it's been a long time since I've had to open this train up actually - but the motor is definitely in one of the ends, either above the lead or trailing bogie.
