    I have a 2004 Rav4 FWD and this vehicle surprises me to this day. Bought it at 94k miles and have only done basic car maintenance and it is about to reach 150k miles. I abused this car a lot and I truly mean it. I take this thing mudding, offroading, river crossing, and anything honestly and it is just FWD! Awesome car that has not let me down.

    just bought an 05 rav4 at 190k miles.. Just changed the evap canister because I overfilled the fuel tank. Dealership quoted 800-1200 but I did it myself for about $280. This car is so easy to work on.

    I've just bought a used 2003 RAV4 VX 2.0, manual, 60K miles, in good condition. As it's an older vehicle I was looking for information on typical problems so I know what to look out for. This video goes above and beyond what I was hoping to find, really helpful.

      Keep up with the transmission service it's TOP priority. We have a 2006 Toyota Rav 4 it was making a humming, rattling noise, come to find out the hood some how came loose and keep.a eye on the plastic covers underneath they tend to come loose too.

      Still have the rav4? I’m considering buying an 01 Manual, 2.0. Do you know it that 2.0 engine has a timing belt of timing chain?

    • @Beesa10
      @Beesa10 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HAXUSOfficial I still have the Rav4, 97k miles, it has a timing chain. I've changed oil and filters regularly and still runs very well although the serpentine drive belt broke and I replaced it. Belt had been renewed at 60k, snapped at 96k, thankfully I was close to home. Unfortunately now it has failed MOT (roadworthiness test) due to corroded brake pipes and excessive wear of the prop shaft centre bearing and universal joint so remains to be seen if I will get it repaired and back on the road or put the money towards a different used vehicle in due course. Bit of a bummer tbh, the transmission has worn out before the motor.

Got it at 180.000miles and changed thus far : struts and bushings all around when I got it, battery, bosch spark plugs sterring rack and pinion (the most expensive of all,around$ 800), the ECM had to be reprogrammed ( done that on Ebay with Ecm exchange 150$ or so), original alternator died at 222.000 miles $150 changed myself, leaking valve gasket (15$ and changed myself), 2 brake jobs in 40.000miles but I had it at delivery jobs also.. all in all it still runs awesome, doesn't burn oil or any other kind off leaks.

    in rust-belt areas, this is what I've experienced in order. The #1 rust problem is most of the exhaust joints rot out just like you say, yet the pipe itself will be perfect. Rot is also troublesome on the welded section right behind the 2nd cat. The 2nd most-serious rust issue are the gas tank straps. They are lightweight and rot away not much after 100,000 miles. I replaced mine with construction-grade builders tie-strap. The 3rd most-serious rust problem is rusted-out fuel lines inside the left-rear fender well. No matter how well one flushes the protective cover channel, you will be surprised about the amount of sediment, stones, and other stuff that will stay in there and rot the lines to the gas tank, including the filler neck. I would be tempted to leave the cover off but it's a damage-prone area (stones or other debris flung from the tire). The 4th most-serious problem with rust is the top of the gas tank. Just like the inner-fender fuel lines, no matter how well one washes underneath the car, a huge amount of sediment, stones, and other stuff collects on top of the tank and rots it out. There's almost no clearance up there to spray into. Other than periodic removal of the tank (not a simple job), the next best way is to remove the rear seats and the round access covers in the floor to get at the top of the tank. The cover flanges for the rear brake assemblies like to rot away but that's minor. For the Body, if you keep the car adequately hosed underneath and elsewhere, it will hold up quite well. Ours has 260,000+ and going strong, in the mountains with heavy winter salt and sand

    A few things to add: before the facelift(2000-2002) Rav's ran the standard corolla clutch on the 2.0l models, which proved to be underdimensioned and had problems with them wearing out. My 2000 Rav wore out its clutch in 2016, and you have to drop the engine and gearbox in order to replace it. Which I of course sprang for, I mean these cars refuse to die before

    Hi, I just retired our 2004 RAV4 that had 175K one owner miles. Encountered the catalytic converter issue you mentioned, as well as the evaporative charcoal canister (fixed that one myself, long story). Always used Mobil1 5W-30 oil and kept up with the rest of the fluids routinely. One common problem from high miles is the intake manifold will warp around 120K miles, particularly when it’s been driven in a warm climate (Texas car its entire life). Using OEM parts is always the best way to go but sometimes budget and availability might preclude going that route. Never had a major issue with engine or transmission, had replaced an alternator and idler pulley around 130K but aside from what I already mentioned it’s been just tires, batteries, brakes, etc. It was a great car and a pleasure to drive for all of those miles.

If the cat is bad it’s not too big a deal in a place with no emissions testing. I replaced the top o2 sensor before getting the 420/430 errors so I was hoping it was a cheaper part than the cat. My front suspension was clunking and it turned out to be stabilizer ball joints. Cheap and easy fix. These things are great vehicles even with higher miles on them. People look at mine and think it’s newer than it is. They hold up very well.

    Good info Doc. If you are considering one of these, get it checked out. Toyota factory repair parts such as cat converters, evap canisters, gas filler tubes, etc. are very expensive. If it does have a head gasket issue, which seems to occur at some point in the life of these, walk away. Don't waste your time/money trying to repair it.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good info. Repairs can certainly get expensive on these rigs. I bet our local dealership sees a ton of head gasket/bolts failures on these. Lucky for me I haven’t seen many of them at my shop.

    • @toyotaron7830
      @toyotaron7830 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do work at a dealership, and we get several head gasket/motor issues a week, not necessarily this model. Its interesting, certain Rav4 and Camry's have a SSC were we essentially re-ring the motor to help with the oil burning, and as long as the motor has never been overheated the head bolts come out ok. It sounds like the block is going to explode, but they come out. Its once they overheat and you get the different expansion rate between the Alum and steel head bolts is when the threads pull out. I know you want to do right by your customers, but the best solution per Toyota is a short block or low mileage replacement.

      Toyota Ron. I just bought a 1 owner 03 Rav4 manual transmission with 150k miles. The previous owner took it to dealerships the entire time they owned it, so the Carfax was a great reference for maintenance records. They dealership had it for over 3 months, probably because it's a stick and few people want or know how to drive one lol. Anyways, they did replace they head gasket right before I bought it. I'm pretty sure the ECM is only an issue for automatics? Anything else I should expect to go on this year and model? Please and thanks.

      Engine oil I believe plays a huge role in that, I used Mobil1 the entire life of my ‘04 RAV4 and never had an issue. Sure the valve cover gasket had to be replaced but no biggie, did it myself. The VVTi engines were still relatively new technology when they were introduced and Toyota should have required full synthetic oil in them, but for whatever reason they hadn’t would have made a big difference.

    Have you ever run into the problem of the roof rack leaking on the passenger side floorboards? As my Jeep had this problem and it was the sunroof/roof rack drain tube had broken as the drain hose on a 2001 jeep grand Cherokee limited ran down through the window pillar behind the kick panel and then a drain hole in the floor/ My neighbor has a Rave 4 2015, with water on the floorboard passenger side, and I am thinking it is the A/C drain tube plugged. By the way, Very Good Job on the Video.

It is not supposed to be dangerous. Some have said you need to replace the shaft to fix the problem long-term. Others recommend just inserting lubrication at the joint where it meets the other shaft. My questions is....Having you tried the simple lubrication method for a successful quick fix? Thanks sop much!

Started it one day and got misfires and engine light blinking (all cylinders misfired) took it back home around the corner. I bought new spark plugs and coils replaced all four. Drove it around town no issue, next day same issue again now the car barely starts and wants to bog out. I'm stuck, not sure if I need to replace the fuel pump or whats going on now.

    • @choppedchamp8757
      @choppedchamp8757 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crackajackjack336 Did you pull any codes from the ECM? Go to Autozone or Advance and they will pull them for you or you can purchase a basic scan tool and DIY. Offhand it doesn't sound like a fuel pump issue. KOEO (key on, engine off) will send power to the fuel pump and you should be able to hear the pump come on. Flashing CEL usually indicates unburned fuel going into the exhaust which will damage the catalytic converters in the long run, but not always. Check the O2 & MAF sensors to make sure they are working properly and the computer is sending the correct amount of fuel into the system and look for any vacuum leaks while your at it. Also check your PCV valve and replace if needed. Good luck!!

    I recently had a problem with the driver’s side door lock, where the actuator has to be replaced and a new lock cylinder had to be put in. All went well except now the window and lock control panel in the driver’s side door keeps popping out every time I close the door. I took it back to the mechanics and they have no idea why it won’t stay put now. It’s very annoying to have to continually push it back in place. There’s a part that engages at the top of the panel with the rest of the door main panel, but it keeps popping out from the bottom where there doesn’t seem to be anything there to hold it in place. I suspect there may have been something there that held it in, but it may have come off and got lost or was not even seen by the guys who did the repairs. I don’t know who to ask about it locally and the Toyota dealers is an hour drive away. Any help you can offer? Seems like it should be an easy fix for someone who knows what they’re doing. And usually my local mechanics do a great job. Thanks if you can help. My car is a 2003 Toyota RAV4.
