I can almost see the writers sitting down and be like "Okay, we have [this villain] who's main quirk is [whatever the main quirk is]. How do we give him a proper motivation to move the plot and what can we do to make it hard for Batman to beat him? Suggestions, please!"

I just recently rewatched the entire BTAS on my DVD collection two weeks ago My BTAS DVD's are old but still in really good condition. Anyway I've been thinking ever since I rewatched The Clock King's follow up appearance in Time Out of Joint where he comes back to torment Mayor Hill and defeat Batman with time warping technology. That there's no possible way he could've done everything he did like fall off a building twenty stories high and land safely onto a passing train, abduct The Mayor in front of hundreds of witnesses and a full police squad while The Mayor's dedicating a new subway line and survive the collapse of the clocktower without having the same time warping technology that he had in Time Out of Joint which btw is one of my all time favorite episodes I think Time Out of Joint is CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED

I always liked this version of the Clock King the most; it feels like the interpretation in which the core concept and gimmick is the most utilized and polished. The way the character is reinvented, from probably one of Batman's most ridiculous foes in the comics, to this really intimidating and intelligent character, kind reminds me of how Christopher Nolan reinterpretated The Joker and Bane. In fact, the Clock King here feels like a Christopher Nolan character, years ahead of the Christopher Nolan-trilogy.

What is it with Supervillains and having talking names?
How is it that people that are named Villian McBadguy, or Ato Micdisaster always happen to be involved in a lab accident or come to hate a certain hero very much? The universe in Marvel and DC must be a huge dick on people who happen to have bad names.

That is showing problem solving that we, as the viewer can see and understand, and shows Batman's intelligence in a way other than "I make gadgets and stuff" Actually it's one of my favorite scenes in the whole show. Combine that with the fact that mechanical clocks were still a thing when I was younger, and I have autistic super hearing, and I could actually learn the sound of a clock reaching a certain time.
It made of an interesting childhood. I'm better now thankfully, and while I would say Clock King serves as a "dark mirror" I will say I understand his pain, at least a little.

I actually went back to rewatch this episode, and a really cool feature is with the playtime, if you take into concideration that the intro takes a full minute, the moment that the judge makes his verdict happens at 4:15 on the timer, but without the intro it would have been at 3:15 really awesome if I do say so myself.

One of my favourite Batman: The Animated Series episodes and villains. This guy singlehandedly outsmarted Batman arguably better than most other villains, it was so awesome to see. Truly jealous of those clock glasses and clock hand walking stick.

I don’t know if it was intentional or an edit made to remove blood, but I always like at 3:17 having a rare moment showing that the bright yellow bat signal in the chest isn’t just a hubris design flaw to the shadow e,bracing dark blue/gray costume. They made that rip appear like there is extra padding underneath. It is to make villains AIM for a protective spot instead of targeting areas that affect mobility such as knees or wrists.

LOL!!! There's just something so damn amusing about Bruce sitting in the back seat of a regular car as Batman!
With that said, this was a fun outing and showed that even villains outside of the Dark Knight's traditional rouge's gallery can offer something new.
Liked Bruce and Alfred's dynamic when trying to solve the case and the finally at the clock tower was a nice touch.

Despite Fugate being known for his precision, he actually gets the math wrong during the climax when he explains to Hill that the latter will be crushed by the clock's hands at 3:15. Between every two sequential numbers on a clock of the type on a tower, there are 4 tick marks, and since a clock takes 60 minutes to go from one number to the next, that means every 12 minutes, the hour hand moves to the next tick mark. So at 3:12, the clock's hour hand would have moved to the next tick mark, and thus the hands wouldn't have fully closed together until 3:16. The man obsessed with precise timin2 was off by a single minute.

Between Clock King and Baby Doll, I'm not sure which villain was more menacing in an unexpected way. You've got a time-obssessed white collar civilian who could easily have his ass handed to him by Batman. Yet because of one bad day, along with his knowledge of time, he proved to be one of The Dark Knight's most underrated foes. Then there's Baby Doll. A former child star with a genetic disorder that prevented her from fully growing as the star of a TV series. Her series gets cancelled due to her own ego, and she finds herself on the outs. Yet in desperation, she's able to hire able bodied muscle to kidnap her castmates and nearly kill them all. Even in failing to exact revenge, Baby Doll puts up a surprisingly good fight with Batman that leads to one of the saddest endings in animated history! Shame both characters couldn't be worked into the GOTHAM series. Hell, even a brief storyline for Nolan's Batman trilogy. I mean, he worked in a snooty version of Roland Daggett. You'd think Fuget and Dahl would have fit in his universe somehow...🤔🇵🇷🇺🇸📽🤔🦂😎

I always loved this exchange between Batman and the Clock King:
Batman: Give it up, Fugate. Hill committed no crime against you.
CK: He did worse! HE MADE ME LATE!
It's both a perfect justification for Fugate's turn to crime and, at the same time, absolutely pathetic.

I love the whole prologue of this episode the way it depicts the chaotic mania of how one bad day can wreck a man's life to the point of no return because of an unfortunate mishap with a serio-comic edge that Kafka or Dostoevsky would have touched on. It's those kind of mishaps that people either recover from to start again or get consumed by and Clock King shows an outrageously absurd and creepy portrait of how far someone can sink when they lose control from a single day of errors and have only vengeful power left in their clutches.

Like most of the villains in this show the Clock King has a very sympathetic origin story. I felt truly sad for him that everything spiraled out of control because he decided to try to go outside his schedule for once. The worst luck at the worst time and he reacts in the worst way.

The clock tower fight between BatMan and Temple Fugate was lifted directly from Disney's The Great Mouse Detective and Hayao Miyazaki's Lupin The III film The Castle of Cagliostro I would say The Clock Tower fight between BatMan and Temple Fugate was lifted more from The Castle of Cagliostro than The Great Mouse Detective but both had significant influences on the script as The Ending to Back To The Future Part I where Doc Brown is hanging from The Clock Tower. _This_ one stuck out for me. I often watched BTAS after school and I wasn't that into it but the realistic legal portrayals in this one (for a cartoon I mean), the lack of exaggerated near-impossible events and the scenery of subways, offices and a park being frequented by this weird yet oddly sympathetic man was compelling in a way most episodes weren't.
What SUCKED was I remember getting to the "Then perhaps this will teach you to be on time for a change!" part and I had to leave for art class. Found myself thinking of it the whole evening and what happened to the guy... No net in 1993!
I also thought Scarecrow was an actual scarecrow in those days...
