I personally would love to see a live action Batman trilogy that has Batman’s more fantastical villains. Villains like Man-Bat and Clayface. With todays CGI you can do these characters justice and make them really terrifying.
Seeing how the test screenings for Matt Reeves The Batman called the movie "a psychological horror", I think if in the sequel, a man who has a split personality will bring up the scare factor. Also, maybe throw in Professor Pyg and Hugo Strange for good measure. Also, since they're redoing Riddler, we need a Poison Ivy redo too, right? Make her plants through practical effects that when Batman is investigating them, they trap him in a jump-scare moment.
A nice Detail that I noticed with the Justice League show was in an alternate dimension where the Justice League where dictators known as the Justice Lords in Arkham asylum super man used his heat vision to perform lobotomies on the inmates to make them docile, with the Ventriloquist super man did not lobotomise the Ventriloquist himself but the Puppet Scarface, you can tell because only the puppet has Lobotomy scars.
The ventriloquist honestly used to be one of my favorites because he was so different from all of batman's other villains and the dynamic between the two characters were interesting and make you think "does the puppet have a life of his own"
In my opinion the puppet Scarface is supernatural. The world of Batman has many examples of people with anomalous gifts or powers. Salomon Grundy, Killer Croc, and Poison Ivy are examples of what I see in the Batman universe that allow me to believe Scarface is an anomalous being.
Well it's half and half it's was more so of the mental problems they had and two face was a man of justice then he was scared physically so bad that his mind made him think he was 2 people the ventriloquist was just some guy who always been push around so he made up a puppet to pet his anger into and what he wish he could be even posion ivy wasn't all magical she used the plants chemicals to her advantage she treated plants like crazy cats people she disconnected her self from humanity batman was best when he was just being a detective and instead of killing crazy people who needs help he sent them to the asylum he was grounded to the earth and reality-based problems
they used to always kinda imply that on the old animated series ..theyd make it out like hes just a crazy guy with a puppet then at the end of the episode something strange would happen after capturing him like the puppet would disappear or someone would get shot by the puppet even tho albert was already in custody ...always some weird happening that could only be explained by the puppet being alive somehow.
It would have been a great Easter egg to see the ventriloquist guy being led down the hallway by two ordelies using a white sock using his scarface voice at Arkham in the last scene of jaqiens Phoenix joker.
Yeah I was really disappointed that there wasn't a proper fight with him in the Arkham games. Well I mean more like a proper side-mission or story mission.
Scar face is easily one of the best villains from the Batman animated series. He's hilarious when constantly undermining his ventriloquist for not being good enough.
There was always a creepy almost unnatural undertone to scarface, for one the other inmate was weirdly protective and possessive of the doll while nothing supernatural offhand the guy seemed almost betrayed possibly why he attacked the puppet in the struggle as well as Wesker. To top off the weirdness scale the fact that the doll does eventually change hands to a new ventriloquist a couple of times after poor Wesker bites it, the doll seems to know things that the new "dummies" shouldn't know about like it has its own memories. Not sure if the comics covered it, but the cartoon pointed out that the voices coming out of wesker were as if they are two different people with no similarities, which was bizarre, and why batman thought wesker had some secret boss only to find a puppet. While wesker most definitely had his own issues that sadly never got addressed (mostly due to status quo writing sadly) scarface ended up being an enigma in of himself.

My personal headcanon is that the puppet was not originally supernatural. It was all a form of alternate personality disorder. However after a prolonged time of Wesker using Scarface the puppet took on a life of its own. His alternate personality in some anomalous way infected the puppet and was able to live on after Arther
Theory: Arnold's multiple personality disorder may have an undertone of supernaturalism. Example: If the puppet was carved from the very same wood as when Calpone was hung from, his spirit could have been attached to the device/scaffolding. Then when a piece was used for the puppet, it coalesced into that one piece and emitted an aura that made his "creator/caretaker" want to protect him in every way and when he (spirit of Capone) found a weak willed but someone filled with hidden rage, he jumped to a new host. Used his new host to continue his criminal campaign.
Basically you say that both Arnold and Reiner (Rhino?) are mediums of considerable power who were influenced by some ghost inside of the wood that Scarface was carved out of? yeah, seems reasonable.

I like the idea that Wesker's personality disorder and his desire to avoid accountability for his own evil thoughts and actions made him extra susceptible to subtle supernatural influences of the cursed doll, and that over the years of being a focus for his dark subconscious, it has grown strong and independent enough to take control of other weak-willed people and perhaps even manipulate fate in order to get into their hands.
After YEARS of seeing villains like the Joker, I loved the years of Don Newton & Norm Breyfogle. They introduced weird fresh villains like Killer Croc and the Ventriloquist.
Batman lost most of his charm when he joined the other superpowered beings in the justice league. To make him a viable mainstay member of JLA they had to make him have some sort of superpower so now he was this super genius martial artist with answers to every question in existence. He could just look at a problem and come up with a solution. This took a lot out of the whole "great detective" part. And it also meant that Batman had power scaled way beyond most of his rogues gallery (who were normal humans or as close as they could be). Batman fought alongside superman punching aliens on the face now what is riddler compared to that. So he becomes a joke character rather than the dangerous trickster he was before. Penguin is no longer a kingpin of crime but a plot device. And it goes on and on...
I would love to see him, manbat and clayface make their way into a live action big budget movie/movies. It’s amazing that they haven’t been used at all yet!
He was always one of my favorites. While I didn't care for his aesthetic in The Batman, I did like that Wesker was formerly a skilled professional Ventriloquist before he snapped, casually drinking a glass of water while Scarface talked about his plans.
Funny detail about the Ventriloquist In the Justice League arc featuring the Justice Lords, our heroes visit an Arkham Asylum where all of the Rogue's gallery have had lobotomies on their brains to make them tame, indicated by dots on their forehead. But when you see The Ventriloquist, it's Scarface that has the telltale signs of a lobotomy.
Gotham City is known for having the type of criminals that would often make you loose hope in Humanity, or make you question if they’re even Human at all.
We dont call it multiple personality disorder anymore, we use dissociative identity disorder. He doesnt have mutiple personalities, his trauma forces his subconscious to dissociate his identity as a result of this particular conversion disorder.
He’s definitely one of my favorite minor Batman villains and I wish he showed up more often in things. I remember feeling bad for him in both of the different animated adaptations I saw as a kid.
I think it was a slight mixture of both. I think that Capone's soul wasn't in the doll. But since it was from the gallow that killed him (and likely many others) it had the ability to absorb souls. And since Albert poured so much of himself into it as Scarface, that's what it absorbed. Becoming it's own entity, albeit one that needs a host/puppet.
Batman has the greatest comic book villains, yet there's still some the go completely underutilized. The Ventriloquist is a pretty tragic character with SO MUCH potential, imagine a solo film about him like Joker (2019).
He's super interesting, but I don't think he would fit well as the main antagonist, having to carry the majority of a blockbuster... I see him as a very effective 2nd villain, like Harvey Dent in the Dark Knight.

I always thought that Wesker might've been a little Scizophrenic, as well potentially having the dummy be a sort of personality that manifested from some deep reaches of his mind. Especially when in a lot of iterations, he seems to genuinely believe that Scarface is a sentient being of sorts.
You forgot to mention that, in the continuation of BTAS it was proved that Scarface was just a puppet and wasn't supernatural, + the ventriloquist was redeemed in the end when Batman caught the guy who was messing with the puppet.
For the longest time i am convinced that the Ventriloquist and dummy are completely separate individuals. Whenever they run, shoot, or do any outrageous stunts; Scarface would not even flinch, and the Ventriloquist would often brace, or tremble in fear, even though he is supposedly doing them on his own.

It was pretty funny in the original animated series when Batman threw his voice to sound like Wesker insulting Scarface, and Scarface asked Wesker what did he say? Wesker said he didn't say anything because his lips didn't move. Scarface said "so what? You're a ventriloquist!" That's why Batman has the best villains.
I think my favorite scene with him is in Justice League during Justice Lords ark. We see all Batman's enemies have been rounded up to Arkham, and have all been lobotomized by Superman. Scarface has the markings while the Ventriloquist doesn't. Both are sitting as well behaved as other inmates.
What if he started as a non-Supernatural, but through time developed into a Tsukumogami (Object based Yokai)? With a long enough infusion of Arthur's bad Psyche, he became a creature all his own.
Growing up I thought the dummy was controlling him which I thought was cool but as I grew up I understood that Batman villains are basically demented people which made it super interesting and got into learning phycology
This was so well done on the Gotham Series. So many of these origin stories finally had the time to breathe. You got to know the characters before they became big-time villains and in some cases before they became villains at all.
Can’t help but note that if the Ventriloquist, with just a dual personality gives Batman trouble, imagine how he’ll feel if he ever crosses paths with Marvel’s Moon Knight, who has 3! (5 if we account for Moon Knight as another persona, and when Khonshu opts to Personally control MK to take matters in his hands.)

Or the eraser, a guy who dresses in a pencil colored striped suit, wears pointy graphite shoes, and an eraser helmet that removes all forensic evidence of crime. Not gonna lie I kinda love his gimmick and want him to make a comeback. Make him the next kite man.
In the Telltale Batman Series there was an interesting take on The Ventriloquist where Scarface was a sock Puppet and was hinted at as the Ventriloquist's reaction to bullying and abuse at a young age, where Scarface would be a sort of bodyguard to scare off people who would want to hurt him. It would be interesting to have a Scarface that genuinely cares about The Ventriloquist, too bad they only got a small amount of screentime
I would LOVE to see a live-action adaptation of Scarface. The mystery of not knowing whether the ventriloquist was actually controlling Scarface or if Scarface was supernatural made the whole character creepy and unnerving. I don't think I'd want a definitive answer if the character was brought to the screen.
9:40 "He was sent back to Arkham Asylum. And that is the last we heard of him in this series." NO! No no no! I'm sorry but that is wrong. You cannot throw away possibly my favorite episode involving this character. In the sixth episode of 'The New Batman Adventures' which followed immediately on from Batman TAS (with the Superman TAS art style) we get some actual freaking closure for this character. In the episode "Double Talk", Arnold Wesker has dreams about living a happy life free of crime, but his dreams keep being interrupted by Scarface reappearing and dragging him back into it. Despite being released from Arkham with a clean bill of health and a new chance at a happy life, even being given a job as a mail clerk for Wayne Enterprises, his past catches up when the former gang members confront him and ask when the boss will becoming back. Despite Arnolds insistence Scarface is gone and Batman stepping in to save him, he's haunted by the voice of Scarface and even thinks he sees him calling from a phone booth. As Batman investigates he discovers a diminutive small time crook named Hips McManus was hired by the gang members to dress up as Scarface and force Arnold to bring him out. Which works. Scarface returns and recruits the gang members again to rob Wayne Enterprises, but in the process he double-crosses them, saying "When the muscle starts thinking it's the brains, then it's time to amputate." He tries to kill his gang members but when Scarface is knocked away and Arnold grabs the gun, at Batman and Batgirls urging and Scarface's berating to "do something right for once" Arnold finally builds up the courage and turns the gun on Scarface, blasting the dummy off the rooftop and into a large roof fan which shreds him to nothing. Despite all he's done Arnold recounts to his landlady later how Mr. Wayne gave him another chance. She tells him that it's wonderful and he should open up more to others. Arnold closes the episode saying he will in time, but for the moment he's happy just being by himself. A rare happy ending to one of Batman's foes. I take this as a canonical ending for this character over any other. He deserved a happy life.
Kind of looks like the ambiguity of supernatural or just a delusion is a cool part of the character. Maybe best kept as an unopened Schroeder's Cat, where it is both simultaneously.
Same thing with calendar man, he actually goes through a death and rebirth process depending on the seasons of the year effectively making him immortal. He also exhibits a number skills that make him dangerous like a high level, near genius intellect, and has exceptional hand to hand combat skills.
I like this villain simply because I enjoy the psychological stuff way, way more than the paranormal. Plus puppets. I love puppets. So the combination of the two (with mild theoretical supernatural elements) is just such a perfect combination for me.
I always felt this guy was such an amazing idea. I was disappointed when they replaced him with a hot woman. The “meek and pathetic” look of Arnold Wessker was a huge part of the brilliance.
Imo it would make sense if Wesker's backstory was one were he was the heir of a mob family, not only for the theme of Scarface but to explain how he has the know-how to conduct a life of crime, I prefer to rely on a psychological explanation who is more in line with the Batman's rogue gallery than a supernatural one.
I think the point is we don't know whats going on. Honestly it would make for a sad character for this weak guy to be forced into crime by a magic puppet and everyone thinks he is lying even he isn't sure.

You mentioned him not having powers and honestly I really like that. I hate how much superheroes nowadays are compared to god's. I'm much more like the down to earth pulp type of characters where they have a gimmick, and they're definitely fantastical, but they're not necessarily superhuman.
All the villains in this series are so much better than any movie can portray them. They all have an epic soundtrack played by a full orchestra. I think the penguin has maybe the best soundtrack of all in this series.
I kept waiting for him to show up in Nolan's Batman Trilogy. The character was practically built for his style and take on characterization. He's a walking psychological thriller.
Every time I hear “Arnold Wesker” all I can think of is “Albert Wesker” from Resident Evil. The idea of Albert having a puppet of himself is extremely hilarious considering how serious he is despite talking exactly like a comic book villain
In some of the comics they hint at Scarface being a haunted puppet but they leave it really vague, and i think that the the possibility of either it's the most unsettling part
Batman separated a recording of their voices and he couldn't match them. The Ventriloquist is so supernaturally far off himself when being Scarface that even his voice masking basically is just a different voice that he can somehow reproduce throught the puppet.
I'd love to see Jeff dunham cast as wesker the ventriloquist, he does a skit with his dummies where one dummy has a dummy then he drinks a liquid while dummy talks. Very funny routine would make a great scene in a live action batman where Mr Scarface would discuss plans while wesker takes a drink

So my opinion is that Scarface is supernatural. Being carved from gallow's wood and retaining the spirit of a once powerful gangster makes sense in storytelling and makes for a more compelling plot device. Scarface primarily operates with people who are mentally unstable because they are probably easier for him to control/manipulate or are somehow more prone to witnessing/encountering/interacting with the supernatural.

Dunno but I think he is supernatural/possessed because in the Animated Series: when Scarface returns and stalks Arnold - doesn't he call Arnold from a phone booth? He talks to Arnold and you can clearly hear the typical phone-static noise and Batman listens to this conversation (hearing this as well). Is Arnold THAT good with the voice that he imitates the phone static noise?
Imagine a cyberpunk or more supernatural version of him where he either like has creepy cybernetic scarface like puppet he uses via cybernetics that are like intrusive and stuff or him being like a creepy entertainer/carnival worler like dude who would just uses his physic or supernatural powers to animate the scarface puppet and like while he does he just kinda floats and twitches

I think they shouldn't make all the villains "gangsters" or too publicly violent.....the ventriloquist would be more memorable if he himself would be stiff and shy, like totally dead on the inside (like he himself is a cursed puppet) and he would operate scarface like he was his own delusional psych who wants people to hate and suffer or transform them into a collection.....the ventriloquist still has too much emotions and that pimp/gangster doll is ridiculous....and he shouldn't be a "mob boss" and have idiots (goons as some would call it) but rather live out his delusions in secret, one victim after another, so that even batman doesn't know what's going on.....batman would find corpses who look like the joker could have done it but joker himself doesn't know and later, the joker finds out before batman and tries to intimidate the ventriloquist or kill him but then the joker too would be like "wtf is wrong with this guy" [maybe even have a lil' moment where even he is "creeped" out (for jokers standards)] and he would erase the trace towards the ventriloquist and discretely cover up his crimes (or lead towards some but never revealing who does them) just to fool batman and spread more hate and violence in the world......i just think horror suits him more than gangster
hey just to shout out that ventriloquist is featured in a brazilian batman fan movie called in the pshychosis of the ventriloquist, u can find it with english subtitltes online and is a really phylosopy driven history with pretty good tone, something that we dont see that much specially in fan things, this movie has a full short movie lenght also
As much as I like the Joker; other villians need to appear in a Batman live action movie. Even Poison Ivy and Catwoman have been done to death and brought back in the Lazarus pit. In the next Batman sequel Scarface would be perfect in th Pattinson version. Keep with the detective style and mix it up with Batman going against the mafia crimelords and use a redhood story that leads to a young Joker taking the hood. Jump a few years in a third film and we now see Jason Todd wearing it taking on the Black Mask.

The puppet also kills some people at one point without being attached, so it's implied to actually be possessed or something.

I like the idea that Wesker's personality disorder and his desire to avoid accountability for his own evil thoughts and actions made him extra susceptible to subtle supernatural influences of the cursed doll, and that over the years of being a focus for his dark subconscious, it has grown strong and independent enough to take control of other weak-willed people and perhaps even manipulate fate in order to get into their hands.
After YEARS of seeing villains like the Joker, I loved the years of Don Newton & Norm Breyfogle. They introduced weird fresh villains like Killer Croc and the Ventriloquist.
Batman lost most of his charm when he joined the other superpowered beings in the justice league. To make him a viable mainstay member of JLA they had to make him have some sort of superpower so now he was this super genius martial artist with answers to every question in existence. He could just look at a problem and come up with a solution. This took a lot out of the whole "great detective" part. And it also meant that Batman had power scaled way beyond most of his rogues gallery (who were normal humans or as close as they could be). Batman fought alongside superman punching aliens on the face now what is riddler compared to that. So he becomes a joke character rather than the dangerous trickster he was before. Penguin is no longer a kingpin of crime but a plot device. And it goes on and on...
I would love to see him, manbat and clayface make their way into a live action big budget movie/movies. It’s amazing that they haven’t been used at all yet!
Clayface was scary in the animated series
He was always one of my favorites. While I didn't care for his aesthetic in The Batman, I did like that Wesker was formerly a skilled professional Ventriloquist before he snapped, casually drinking a glass of water while Scarface talked about his plans.
Neither did I, but if it helps, I think he's supposed to be based on the Al Pacino version of Scarface.
Funny detail about the Ventriloquist
In the Justice League arc featuring the Justice Lords, our heroes visit an Arkham Asylum where all of the Rogue's gallery have had lobotomies on their brains to make them tame, indicated by dots on their forehead.
But when you see The Ventriloquist, it's Scarface that has the telltale signs of a lobotomy.
Gotham City is known for having the type of criminals that would often make you loose hope in Humanity, or make you question if they’re even Human at all.
Or: They show the ugly the bad side of Humanity.

He’s definitely one of my favorite minor Batman villains and I wish he showed up more often in things. I remember feeling bad for him in both of the different animated adaptations I saw as a kid.
I think it was a slight mixture of both.
I think that Capone's soul wasn't in the doll. But since it was from the gallow that killed him (and likely many others) it had the ability to absorb souls.
And since Albert poured so much of himself into it as Scarface, that's what it absorbed. Becoming it's own entity, albeit one that needs a host/puppet.
Batman has the greatest comic book villains, yet there's still some the go completely underutilized. The Ventriloquist is a pretty tragic character with SO MUCH potential, imagine a solo film about him like Joker (2019).

He's super interesting, but I don't think he would fit well as the main antagonist, having to carry the majority of a blockbuster... I see him as a very effective 2nd villain, like Harvey Dent in the Dark Knight.

I like how he was cured in the DCAU. He reappeared as a cameo in the Justice League episode where they're abducted by the Justice Lords.

I always thought that Wesker might've been a little Scizophrenic, as well potentially having the dummy be a sort of personality that manifested from some deep reaches of his mind. Especially when in a lot of iterations, he seems to genuinely believe that Scarface is a sentient being of sorts.
You forgot to mention that, in the continuation of BTAS it was proved that Scarface was just a puppet and wasn't supernatural, + the ventriloquist was redeemed in the end when Batman caught the guy who was messing with the puppet.
For the longest time i am convinced that the Ventriloquist and dummy are completely separate individuals. Whenever they run, shoot, or do any outrageous stunts; Scarface would not even flinch, and the Ventriloquist would often brace, or tremble in fear, even though he is supposedly doing them on his own.
The batman is so underrated it's criminal. It had different designs for it's characters, and the music was on point.
If they are gonna do villain movies like joker then they should definitely do one for this guy

Scarface could be something that started as natural and became supernatural over time.
Wesker imbued the doll with personality to the extent that others viewed it as alive (rhino is a good example) so it could be that it became 'haunted' in a way
It was pretty funny in the original animated series when Batman threw his voice to sound like Wesker insulting Scarface, and Scarface asked Wesker what did he say? Wesker said he didn't say anything because his lips didn't move. Scarface said "so what? You're a ventriloquist!" That's why Batman has the best villains.
I think my favorite scene with him is in Justice League during Justice Lords ark. We see all Batman's enemies have been rounded up to Arkham, and have all been lobotomized by Superman. Scarface has the markings while the Ventriloquist doesn't. Both are sitting as well behaved as other inmates.
What if he started as a non-Supernatural, but through time developed into a Tsukumogami (Object based Yokai)? With a long enough infusion of Arthur's bad Psyche, he became a creature all his own.
Growing up I thought the dummy was controlling him which I thought was cool but as I grew up I understood that Batman villains are basically demented people which made it super interesting and got into learning phycology
I would like to see him used the same way Nolan used Dr. Crane (Scarecrow). A secondary villain in a movie that keeps showing up in subsequent movies.
This was so well done on the Gotham Series. So many of these origin stories finally had the time to breathe. You got to know the characters before they became big-time villains and in some cases before they became villains at all.
The way I see it, Scarface was a persona created by Wesker as well as an only friend.
Seeing how they made a amazing movie out of the Joker and his whole background. What about scarface? Maybe they could do something like that with him.

In the Telltale Batman Series there was an interesting take on The Ventriloquist where Scarface was a sock Puppet and was hinted at as the Ventriloquist's reaction to bullying and abuse at a young age, where Scarface would be a sort of bodyguard to scare off people who would want to hurt him. It would be interesting to have a Scarface that genuinely cares about The Ventriloquist, too bad they only got a small amount of screentime

The mystery of not knowing whether the ventriloquist was actually controlling Scarface or if Scarface was supernatural made the whole character creepy and unnerving. I don't think I'd want a definitive answer if the character was brought to the screen.

You cannot throw away possibly my favorite episode involving this character. In the sixth episode of 'The New Batman Adventures' which followed immediately on from Batman TAS (with the Superman TAS art style) we get some actual freaking closure for this character.
In the episode "Double Talk", Arnold Wesker has dreams about living a happy life free of crime, but his dreams keep being interrupted by Scarface reappearing and dragging him back into it. Despite being released from Arkham with a clean bill of health and a new chance at a happy life, even being given a job as a mail clerk for Wayne Enterprises, his past catches up when the former gang members confront him and ask when the boss will becoming back. Despite Arnolds insistence Scarface is gone and Batman stepping in to save him, he's haunted by the voice of Scarface and even thinks he sees him calling from a phone booth.
As Batman investigates he discovers a diminutive small time crook named Hips McManus was hired by the gang members to dress up as Scarface and force Arnold to bring him out. Which works. Scarface returns and recruits the gang members again to rob Wayne Enterprises, but in the process he double-crosses them, saying "When the muscle starts thinking it's the brains, then it's time to amputate." He tries to kill his gang members but when Scarface is knocked away and Arnold grabs the gun, at Batman and Batgirls urging and Scarface's berating to "do something right for once" Arnold finally builds up the courage and turns the gun on Scarface, blasting the dummy off the rooftop and into a large roof fan which shreds him to nothing.
Despite all he's done Arnold recounts to his landlady later how Mr. Wayne gave him another chance. She tells him that it's wonderful and he should open up more to others. Arnold closes the episode saying he will in time, but for the moment he's happy just being by himself.
A rare happy ending to one of Batman's foes. I take this as a canonical ending for this character over any other. He deserved a happy life.
I notice most of Batman's top villian's suffer from some form of insanity. That's why their in Arkham Asylum instead of normal prison's.
Kind of looks like the ambiguity of supernatural or just a delusion is a cool part of the character. Maybe best kept as an unopened Schroeder's Cat, where it is both simultaneously.
Same thing with calendar man, he actually goes through a death and rebirth process depending on the seasons of the year effectively making him immortal. He also exhibits a number skills that make him dangerous like a high level, near genius intellect, and has exceptional hand to hand combat skills.
This is what I have been saying for years! This villain deserves a movie spot!
I like this villain simply because I enjoy the psychological stuff way, way more than the paranormal. Plus puppets. I love puppets. So the combination of the two (with mild theoretical supernatural elements) is just such a perfect combination for me.
Ventriloquist is a character you can do a ton with. I'd argue good enough to be a character study in a standalone film, similar to The Joker.
I always felt this guy was such an amazing idea. I was disappointed when they replaced him with a hot woman. The “meek and pathetic” look of Arnold Wessker was a huge part of the brilliance.
Imo it would make sense if Wesker's backstory was one were he was the heir of a mob family, not only for the theme of Scarface but to explain how he has the know-how to conduct a life of crime, I prefer to rely on a psychological explanation who is more in line with the Batman's rogue gallery than a supernatural one.
I think the point is we don't know whats going on. Honestly it would make for a sad character for this weak guy to be forced into crime by a magic puppet and everyone thinks he is lying even he isn't sure.
I mean..if you look at the history of the mafia there are a lot of non italian and nob-mob family people in it lol...

You mentioned him not having powers and honestly I really like that. I hate how much superheroes nowadays are compared to god's. I'm much more like the down to earth pulp type of characters where they have a gimmick, and they're definitely fantastical, but they're not necessarily superhuman.
All the villains in this series are so much better than any movie can portray them. They all have an epic soundtrack played by a full orchestra. I think the penguin has maybe the best soundtrack of all in this series.

I kept waiting for him to show up in Nolan's Batman Trilogy. The character was practically built for his style and take on characterization. He's a walking psychological thriller.
Every time I hear “Arnold Wesker” all I can think of is “Albert Wesker” from Resident Evil. The idea of Albert having a puppet of himself is extremely hilarious considering how serious he is despite talking exactly like a comic book villain

In some of the comics they hint at Scarface being a haunted puppet but they leave it really vague, and i think that the the possibility of either it's the most unsettling part
Batman separated a recording of their voices and he couldn't match them. The Ventriloquist is so supernaturally far off himself when being Scarface that even his voice masking basically is just a different voice that he can somehow reproduce throught the puppet.

So my opinion is that Scarface is supernatural. Being carved from gallow's wood and retaining the spirit of a once powerful gangster makes sense in storytelling and makes for a more compelling plot device. Scarface primarily operates with people who are mentally unstable because they are probably easier for him to control/manipulate or are somehow more prone to witnessing/encountering/interacting with the supernatural.
I am always excited to watch or read a story with this guy.

Dunno but I think he is supernatural/possessed because in the Animated Series: when Scarface returns and stalks Arnold - doesn't he call Arnold from a phone booth? He talks to Arnold and you can clearly hear the typical phone-static noise and Batman listens to this conversation (hearing this as well). Is Arnold THAT good with the voice that he imitates the phone static noise?

I think they shouldn't make all the villains "gangsters" or too publicly violent.....the ventriloquist would be more memorable if he himself would be stiff and shy, like totally dead on the inside (like he himself is a cursed puppet) and he would operate scarface like he was his own delusional psych who wants people to hate and suffer or transform them into a collection.....the ventriloquist still has too much emotions and that pimp/gangster doll is ridiculous....and he shouldn't be a "mob boss" and have idiots (goons as some would call it) but rather live out his delusions in secret, one victim after another, so that even batman doesn't know what's going on.....batman would find corpses who look like the joker could have done it but joker himself doesn't know and later, the joker finds out before batman and tries to intimidate the ventriloquist or kill him but then the joker too would be like "wtf is wrong with this guy" [maybe even have a lil' moment where even he is "creeped" out (for jokers standards)] and he would erase the trace towards the ventriloquist and discretely cover up his crimes (or lead towards some but never revealing who does them) just to fool batman and spread more hate and violence in the world......i just think horror suits him more than gangster
hey just to shout out that ventriloquist is featured in a brazilian batman fan movie called in the pshychosis of the ventriloquist, u can find it with english subtitltes online and is a really phylosopy driven history with pretty good tone, something that we dont see that much specially in fan things, this movie has a full short movie lenght also

As much as I like the Joker; other villians need to appear in a Batman live action movie. Even Poison Ivy and Catwoman have been done to death and brought back in the Lazarus pit. In the next Batman sequel Scarface would be perfect in th Pattinson version. Keep with the detective style and mix it up with Batman going against the mafia crimelords and use a redhood story that leads to a young Joker taking the hood. Jump a few years in a third film and we now see Jason Todd wearing it taking on the Black Mask.
