If you guys at Channel Awesome don't mind me asking, are you going to do reviews of the rest of the DCEAU, and isn't the majority of the various mythological pantheons actually real in DC Comics and Marvel Comics as well?
I wish Maxie was feature in the Arkham Game, he was already hinted at already existing in the Arkham Universe in both Asylum and City but was never seen. He could've been feature in Arkham Origins, where he's starting just out his criminal career, like with The Penguin and Mad Hatter. Or appear in a DLC in Arkham Knight, either in The Season of Infamy or the Red Hood DLC replacing Black Mask.
Ok it is the second to last year for bat may but does this mean we might get a super may for Superman the animated series? Probably not but if you need ideas 😉
Him calling Batman Hades is interesting. As despite what many would think, Hades isn't like the Greek version of the Devil. He's Zeus' older brother and lord of the underworld, tasked with guiding souls to afterlife and takes his job seriously. The fact that Hades is actually one of the chillest and least douchy Greek Gods suggests that Maxie probably doesn’t see Batman as antagonistic to him.
This! Hades is not evil, but he is not altogether good. He is fairly neutral. He only cares about what happens in the Underworld. Let his brothers, sisters, nieces, bastard nieces, nephews, and bastard nephews fight over the world above.
@@isaacgleeth3609 What you have to remember, the Greek gods aren't paragon that personify good and evil. They're just as flawed as human beings. And act the way many humans would with that kind of power. That said Hades is the least rape happy of the gods, has the most normal marriage out of them all and generally is depicted as the least likely to fuck with people. He also has one of the coolest "Don't speak his name or you'll get his attention" nicknames. "He who receives many guests."
@@isaacgleeth3609 And people get the fiasco with the pomegranate so very wrong. Hades literally only kidnapped Persephone at the "dating advice" of Zeus. Since Hades was a pretty introverted guy, it's unfortunately easy to see him actually believing his younger a-hole of a brother. Anyway, once he realized that he screwed up, he was already in the process of bringing her back to the surface, but of course we know what happened. And so after that, Hades left her alone for a respectful time, and eventually began the process of properly courting her, in some ways as a means of atonement for inadvertantly robbing her of her freedom, and for her to be "respectable" (married). And the thing is, Persephone legitimately fell in love with Hades, not even remotely like Stockholm Syndrome, and their marriage was literally _the_ most stable out of the other Olympians.
@@tylerwestbrook2392 Yeah, but that's Disney. And to be fair, James Woods' acting was phenomenal. As entertaining as it was, that portrayal of Hades just isn't mythologically accurate.
It certainly was better then Beware the Batman which tried something similar, using C and D list villains like Professor Pyg, Anarchy, and Magpie but the villians were so different from their comic origins they just felt like watered down versions of Poison Ivy, Joker/Riddler and Catwoman.
agreed, i always liked the one-time or sometimes two time villains, they helped keep the rogue's gallery lively and didnt bloat it to where our favorites could get lost in the shuffle.
What I liked most about this one, is that Maxie’s henchmen actually had some sense. In most episodes, the henchmen of Batman villains are usually machine gun wielding, trigger happy advisories for Batman to fight. Extra villains to keep the tension high. Here however, the henchmen actually question the villain. They even kind of admit how crazy he is acting. That is something we don’t usually see with Batman villains, and is a interesting detail.
"Fires of Olympus" was the saddest and most disturbing episode for me. There was just something so tragic about him saying that he was "home" at the end.
I've heard some people refer to the moment where Maxie calls Two-Face Janus a mistake seeing as how Janus was one of the few original Roman deities that weren't already based on a Greek God and ergo Maxie shouldn't know who he is. But I like to think that at the end of the episode, he's gone so far off the deep end, he's getting his Greek & Roman deities mixed together
My honest guess is that Maxie's obsession isn't strictly Greek myths but probably the ancient world in general with a Greco-Roman focus. The popular understanding of the ancient world combines the two cultures and even in late antiquity the ancients themselves essentially fused the two cultures together. For instance, when the Roman emperor Julian attempted to revive the traditional Roman religion, He did it with heavy Greek influence even to the point of referring to the Gods by the names of Their Greek counterparts. However, one doesn't need to go that far late to find Romans openly stating that they believed that their culture came from the Greeks. In short, it's actually not unusual for someone to be mentioning Greek and Roman Gods in the same breath. Maxie referencing Janus alongside Hermes and Demeter isn't because he's confused but rather because he has a syncretic approach to the cultures he is deriving his identity from
I'm also huge fan of the ending, specially how Zeus compares the bat rogues with the greek gods, which fits something I always like about comic books: They are in some ways modern versions of classic myths and literature. Anyone can read any story and will find something cleary inspired by a classic mythos or stories. Considering how later there is a episode where the villains take over Arkham and put Batman on trial for their creation, I kind wish they had Zeus as the who came up with the idea instead of the Joker. In this episode he refers to Batman as Hades and all the arkham inmates as other greek gods, so he could work in "Trial" helping the rogues to take control of the Asylum and putting Batman on trial as attempt to prove to the hero that he is just insane as his villains and he should just accept and take his place in Arkham alongside Zeus and the other "gods" (the other insane inmates).
Honestly it would make more sense if he was a Justice leauge villain. Maybe he sees all the fantastic super powered heroes as a return of the gods, has a psychotic break and begins using his technology and influence to become a god, maybe even become the king of the “gods”. I vaguely remebered The Batman series doing something similar and he was stronger there.
Honestly I would have preferred a redemption arc for him. Maybe not a full blown episode but snippets in the back ground of the series like a news paper article that shows he was released from arkham, maybe passing by a Maximilian Shipping office that has a "grand reopening" sign in it, and seeing him in the background here and there.
@@dylantennant6594 Yeah he was a tech billionaire who build/bought his own airship and called it Olympus, had his own private mercenaries and dress them up like high tech roman soldiers and tried to use his money to buy everyone's vote in political race.
I enjoyed this episode. I always thought if King Tut from the 60s series were to be included in a modern show, they would do him similar to how Maxie Zeus in the Animated Series was done.
I'm a huge mythology fan so this is something I like more than I probably should. Maybe in part because with discussion on how comics are our modern day equivalent of the old myths? But I'll be honest, I can easily see Maxie Zues being useful for a few more episodes. I would like to have seen a character who didn't need to be a permanent villain struggle with his delusions, maybe one more villainous set up, and actually get better and work to fix his life including seeing some Arkham rehabilitation techniques to actually give that place a real use. Unfortunately due to the nature of a show like this expanding the universe through characters other than the main characters is just not something that is gonna happen.

Such a underrated episode in the series featuring one of Batman most underrated Rogues. I like Maxie Zeus and I do wish they could've use him more in a few more episodes instead of making just making him a one time antagonist. He could've allies himself with other members of Batman Rogues Galley like Two-Face, Mad Hatter, Penguin, ect. Just wanted to say I’m so thankful for this series. Last year these came out right when I got Covid and pneumonia at the end of April and this series was something I looked forward to every day when I woke up. Can’t wait to see this season!
oh i love this episode. i don't know why, but that sequence where batman first confronts him and Zeus goes "oh it's my brother Hades" is seared into my brain.
I liked Maxie Zeus in The Batman quite a bit. It was less about the delusions of being the Greek god himself and more about trying to surpass him in legend, and I like that
I always look forward to Walter's Batman and Twilight Zone series, probably more so than the rest of the Channel Awesome content. Not to say I don't enjoy the rest, I very much do, but there's just something about these episodic dives into these culturally significant shows each year that are incredibly thought provoking. Maybe it's the focus on the production, or just the fact that I remember so many of these Batman episodes from my toddler days and love getting those memories wrenched out of the corners of my brain.
This is yet another one of my favorite episodes! and i've even heard a lot of people say that this is a good damsel in distress episode because of the fact that Maxie had his girlfriend or wife or whater tied to the laser thing.
Maxie Zeus was...unusual, even when I saw this as a kid, simply because while I liked how fixated his was by his own delusion, was that nobody saw the warning signs when he built a huge temple on top of a skyscraper. It felt so random and wasn't even a mention as a buildup in previous episodes (Harvey dent had a build up prior to being two-face) I think maybe seeing maxie's insane construction being talked about in epsides prior, or a glimpse of construction as batman is chasing someone I think would had made maxie bit of a 'odd one' Maybe he was jealous of Xanatos' castle on a rooftop project.
@@UltimateGamerCC It's not that it isn't (or wasn't) hurting anyone at the time, but that it was just wasn't mentioned about offhand, even shoehorned as a news bulletin seemingly harmless at the time 'Billionaire defies ruling and goes ahead with his development plans despite objections to his 'Olympus monument' ' In a lot of cases within the BTAS there is a degree of buildup to some events, foreshadowing etc which suits it as it's quite focused on continuity and setting the stage for future events. Not every character got a foreshadow or subtle introduction but I think it was needed for this guy because of how a temple on a building would raise questions from planning rights, to, how much money has he actually got.

Very good video and a very good review of this episode. This episode is not a favorite of mine for the reasons you mentioned but it is an okay entry in BTAS. Looking forward to the rest of Bat-May
Funny how Zeus calls Batman Hades and then in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, his evil counterpart, Owlman, wound up being voiced by James Woods.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Maxie. When I did my voice performance video for him I used a lot of line from this episode. But that is more due to the fact I had trouble finding too many comic book quotes online for him.
I honestly remember The Batman version of maximilian Zeus being way more threatening than this one. Yes big bad electro cannon, but kinda seems small again a whole Olympus themed battle cruiser
I loved Maxy Zeus. He reminds me of Mad Hatter, to which he tries to make the world fit more into his mental state. He is a great example of how many of Batman's villain reflect the human psyche. I would have loved to see him try to heal or have more stories to tell.
Personally I enjoyed the ' Hydra' Batman fought as it felt climatic as a pulp 40's comic! Loved it! Also I rather enjoyed the ending as Mighty Zeus finally returned home!
"...isn't the strongest start we could have had to Bat-May2022"- Heresy! Hath thou no appreciation for the gods?! The voice actor for Maxie Zues is simply phenomenal, which might be a reason why this episode has stuck with me all these years later. Greek Mythology is another reason, and as a concept, it isn't any crazier than the other gimmicks Batman villains have, so as a kid I thought he fit in just fine. If anything, this was the first rogue BTAS introduced to have an outright God Complex, and he's so far gone, I think he even surpasses Mad Hatter in delusional insanity. His girlfriend dealing with it, gives the story a sadness, but I also like how his goons play along even though they think he's nuts too. They are some of the few henchmen who react to their colorful boss realistically.
A part of me still feels like it was missed opportunity to not have Maxie Zeus with an actual role in the Arkham Games. He suffered some serious trauma after Quincy Sharp overdid the shock therapy and that's all the mentions Maxie gets. It would have been cool to have him appear in his nightclub in Arkham City or Arkham Knight, shown to have escaped from Arkham but now with the constant need for some external pacemaker device that corrects his heart rate now and then as the electro-shocks might not only have damaged his brain but the electricity also messed with his heart. But an unknown benefactor has provided him with more than just pacemaker but a whole weapon system, that doesn't just keep his heart beating regularly but also gives him the ability to throw lightning bolts from his hands and absorb electricity (like Batman's shock device would increase his power instead of weaken him). This would further increase his delusions and make for an interesting boss battle battle. Maxie Zeus is really underused in my opinion and could have worked here wonderfully.
I always liked this character as well as King Tut from 66 for kind of the same reason. it would be fun if he also learned Batman's secret but could never communicate it because of how he talks.
I fondly remember him because he was featured in an episode on a VHS tape I had from the 90's. The one with Batman on the front. I still have the whole collection of those tapes
It's very cool to see the visuals and music supporting the epic delusions of Zeus. Like, seeing him take down a blimp with a lightning cannon almost makes it feel like he's the god he says he is, or that he's at least as dangerous as a god.
One of my favorite is the Baby Doll episode. That one literally stuck with me since my youth because of her medical condition's unique name, "systemic hypoplasia" both an interesting story to me, with a couple funny references! My favorite being the Gilligan's Island duo Gilligan and Skipper as her henchmen! X'D I also feel bad for her in her second episode, because she actually tried to live a normal life while working an honest job, but one drunk ass had to push her too far.
I always liked how maxie saw the other members of the rogues gallery as greek and roman gods it always made me wonder how he would see the rest of them
I thought this one was pretty weird when I first caught it too. Maxie's breakdown is already done by the time we begin so there's not much to empathize with here. I like the spin The Batman's version (voiced by Phil LaMarr aka Samurai Jack) put on it where he was so angered at losing his bid in the election to become Gotham's mayor (only villain besides Penguin who can ever try that) that he builds a floating palace with his riches and launches a thunderous attack on the city, DEMANDING to be made Gotham's ruler as is his divine right. Episode came out 2006, not 2021.
Definitely one of my favourite episodes of the entire series. As a kid I wasn't usually as interested in the episodes without a more recognisable villain but this one blew me away.
Maxie Zeus would later get the short end of the stick in the Knightfall saga, running into a tree while escaping Arkham Asylum (although he simply gets dropped with one punch from Bullock in the Time Warner audio drama).
The part with the police blimp or zeppelin was definitely inspired by the Hindenburg. I thought the Arkam Asylum inmates were supposed to be wearing jumpsuits.
Also just gonna say pretty much all the title cards from Batman the Animated series are awesome and I wish I could've gotten my hands on one to hang on my wall. I did find a guy who sells Batman Animated series animation cels but he told me the title cards were the first things that sold out ages ago.
You know, if Maxie Zeus was played as a serious character, I wouldn't like this episode. That said, he's played with a certain air of ludicrousness and the performance is given so much bravado that I don't really care. I love how he calls certain characters various Greek gods.

Just wanted to say I’m so thankful for this series. Last year these came out right when I got Covid and pneumonia at the end of April and this series was something I looked forward to every day when I woke up. Can’t wait to see this season!
Thanks for continuing this May tradition of Batman!
oh i love this episode. i don't know why, but that sequence where batman first confronts him and Zeus goes "oh it's my brother Hades" is seared into my brain.
You know batman is the most accurate modern depiction of hades
"thinks he's the greed god Zeus and *conducts* himself as such" was that a pun?!
BAT-MAY HAS BEGUN!!!!!
Omg Bat-May is back!!!
This is yet another one of my favorite episodes! and i've even heard a lot of people say that this is a good damsel in distress episode because of the fact that Maxie had his girlfriend or wife or whater tied to the laser thing.
"Smoooooke on the River Styx,
A fire from Olympus."
Maxie Zeus was...unusual, even when I saw this as a kid, simply because while I liked how fixated his was by his own delusion, was that nobody saw the warning signs when he built a huge temple on top of a skyscraper. It felt so random and wasn't even a mention as a buildup in previous episodes (Harvey dent had a build up prior to being two-face)
I think maybe seeing maxie's insane construction being talked about in epsides prior, or a glimpse of construction as batman is chasing someone I think would had made maxie bit of a 'odd one'
Maybe he was jealous of Xanatos' castle on a rooftop project.
well rich people are often unorthodox in what makes them happy, but as long as it isnt hurting anyone, why suspect a problem?
@@UltimateGamerCC It's not that it isn't (or wasn't) hurting anyone at the time, but that it was just wasn't mentioned about offhand, even shoehorned as a news bulletin seemingly harmless at the time 'Billionaire defies ruling and goes ahead with his development plans despite objections to his 'Olympus monument' '
In a lot of cases within the BTAS there is a degree of buildup to some events, foreshadowing etc which suits it as it's quite focused on continuity and setting the stage for future events.
Not every character got a foreshadow or subtle introduction but I think it was needed for this guy because of how a temple on a building would raise questions from planning rights, to, how much money has he actually got.
@@worldofthought8352 i mean its the dc universe it prob didn't go gents building code and who they to judge what a rich guy do with his money plus it goes with the theming he has going witch prob draws people in
I always loved seeing Batman fight animals like the boar in this episode.
Other than that, I think this is a pretty good episode to watch if I'm in the mood for something different from this series.
Very good video and a very good review of this episode. This episode is not a favorite of mine for the reasons you mentioned but it is an okay entry in BTAS. Looking forward to the rest of Bat-May
The Walter Signal appears in the night sky at 12:01am May 1st. Looks like Bat-May 2022 is here.
Funny how Zeus calls Batman Hades and then in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, his evil counterpart, Owlman, wound up being voiced by James Woods.
Thank God this is back!! This is one of my favorite episodes.
Let’s goooooooo, bat may is back!!!!!
Although one of the more forgettable episodes, this one does make me chuckle as I'm of Greek heritage. I like all the references to mythology
Let's go, Bat May is here!
How do I know a whole year has passed? When Bat-May returns to my YT lineup!
Thank you for the video.
EXCELLENT COMMENTARY
And we are back
it has begun
I loved Maxy Zeus. He reminds me of Mad Hatter, to which he tries to make the world fit more into his mental state. He is a great example of how many of Batman's villain reflect the human psyche. I would have loved to see him try to heal or have more stories to tell.
He may has been healed since we never hear from him again.
Great review walter 👏🏼👏🏼
Personally I enjoyed the ' Hydra' Batman fought as it felt climatic as a pulp 40's comic! Loved it! Also I rather enjoyed the ending as Mighty Zeus finally returned home!
And... how King Shark commented in Assault on Arkham: ''Firely, Killer Moth, *Maxie Zeus*, never heard of any of these tools.''
Firefly and hell, Killer Moth are actually more well known then Zeus. Don't know how they're loser in the Arkham-verse.
@@deshawnedwards6412 Tbf, by the time I watched AoA, I knew all three of them and didn't knew King Shark himself, lol
i re-subscribed to the channel just for this
My birthday is today (May 1st) and there is no greater gift than kicking it off with Bat-May.
Zeus was a good one-off villain. I liked that he was so deep in his delusions that he initially welcomed Batman as his brother Hades.
I can't wait to see what batmay season 3 has in store for us this year!
"...isn't the strongest start we could have had to Bat-May2022"-
Heresy!
YES I'VE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO BAT MAY ALL YEAR!!!😁😁
A part of me still feels like it was missed opportunity to not have Maxie Zeus with an actual role in the Arkham Games.
Good I was wondering why no one mentioned this character was mentioned/building was in the Arkham games
Are you planing to make supermay from superman the animated series ?
BAT MAY IS BACK‼️‼️‼️
Oooo it is May!
So soon!
You know it’s sad when a Batman villain is more unknown than Polkadot Man 😂 but I wouldn’t mind seeing him rebooted in a show or comic
Now that's some serious cosplaying.
I also feel bad for her in her second episode, because she actually tried to live a normal life while working an honest job, but one drunk ass had to push her too far.
Maxie frickin' Zeus. I still want to see a team up between him and King Tut.
I always liked how maxie saw the other members of the rogues gallery as greek and roman gods it always made me wonder how he would see the rest of them
2:54 AMONGUS!!!
Bat May. My favorite Month of the year.
Happy 30th Anniversary to Batman this year right here.
yessiiiiiiiiiiiir, good to have batmay back
I think Maxi Zeus is one of Batman's most underated villains!
Definitely one of my favourite episodes of the entire series. As a kid I wasn't usually as interested in the episodes without a more recognisable villain but this one blew me away.
Shirley Walker’s score for this episodes is some of the best she ever wrote for the series.
As a Greek myth buff I really found this episode interesting. It's one I can honestly say I wish was more expanded upon.
Maxie Zeus would later get the short end of the stick in the Knightfall saga, running into a tree while escaping Arkham Asylum (although he simply gets dropped with one punch from Bullock in the Time Warner audio drama).
I love these
The part with the police blimp or zeppelin was definitely inspired by the Hindenburg.
I thought the Arkam Asylum inmates were supposed to be wearing jumpsuits.
Best time of the year. BatMay is back
2:53 "Among Us"
BATMAY
How I missed you Bat-MAY
Always liked this episode and character
Ironically in the justice league war animation Wonder Woman also compared Batman to Hades.
a Cheesy but entertaining episode, especially if like me you're into Greek Mythology.
Times going by way too fast, it feels like just yesterday I was watching last year's Bat-may
Kind of sounds like King Tut from Batman 66
It has begun...........
