Cordona PQ8 Quick Shifter Installation on the 2019 ZX6R

  • Because the stock OEM quick shifter on the Kawasaki ZX6R does not work with race pattern shifting, Dave installs a Cordona PQ8 strain gage quick shifter on his new motorcycle.
    NOTE: If your bike requires use of the X Leads like our ZX6R did, the X Leads must be clipped onto the SHORTEST of the Cordona harness leads. You'll see them connected that way in the video, we just failed to state it specifically. No performance bonus for Moss this month.

    I’m addicted to your channel. One thing I really think you could benefit from is a small not so powerful 3/8 impact. For me, disassembly takes half the time and I’m angry when I don’t have a charged battery lol

  • @mattnsac
    @mattnsac 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Word of advice to Dave and anyone else, When hooking up the battery, POSITIVE FIRST! There are safety issues for doing this, if the negative cable is attached first, any tools touching the positive to bolt it down can come into contact with the frame and will short. If negative is done last, you cant short the positive because its still open circuit and if any tools touch the frame while attaching the negative, its fine because the frame is ground anyways. When taking off the battery cables, its the exact opposite, Negative first and for the same reason.

    Greetings from sunny Scotland !
    Thank you for an informative video.
    I'm curious, can it auto blip on down shifts too and what extras would be connected to the 'bat wing'

    • @CatalystReactionSBW
      @CatalystReactionSBW  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Cordona cannot auto blip - that is done via the ECU remap if available internally, or via another sensor. The Bat Wing is the shift light that sits on top of the dash.

    Great video as always, I'm curious, why such a big ECU vs some other units? Also saw that the kill time is static with no options over RPM or gear, is there any automatic adjustment it does based on load, gear etc?

    • @CatalystReactionSBW
      @CatalystReactionSBW  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words. Honestly I have no idea why the ECU has that proportion. You set kill time and pressure/force manually. I have not read yet about any self learning capacity with the ECU. I'll have to dig a little deeper into the product beyond what the website supplies.

    Hi Dave!
    Thanks for the video! How much this shifter will cost? I heard that other option is that you have to change the rearset (SATO RACING) to make the stock shifter work. Which option would you recommend if you notice the price, how much work it has to be done etc? Rearset is little bit more expensive but it is a lot less work than switching the shifter like you did in this video?
    Thank you!

    • @CatalystReactionSBW
      @CatalystReactionSBW  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joonas - the clearance was going to be the issue against the frame so I chose to go a different route with the Bonamici product. In the long run, I found that to be a better and more cost effective solution. .

    You should have got the Woolich flashing system which uses the same Cordona strain gauge and shift road, all done thru the ECU. Tons and tons of extra wire not needed, air box removal not needed, control box not needed.

      I use GP Shift on the track as I much prefer it personally. Many very famous racers used regular/street pattern with no issues so it is not a big deal at all. In real terms, it is what makes you comfortable or what makes the most sense.

      Dave Williams, editor, replying here. Mat Mladin used street pattern his entire career. Watched some Josh Herrin onboard video recently and it appears he runs street pattern. I've run both and prefer street because it's more important that the downshifts be easier than the upshifts given a choice between the 2.

      Dear Dave,
      I found out that my cordona chifter censor was normally a 2 pin plug instead of a 3 pin with the same wires. My dyno tuner unplugged it and turned it into a 3 pin. The wire color is the same green on the left, brown and white in the middle and yellow on the right when you look at the plug along the click. Is the sensor shorting because it is normally a 2pin sensor and now a 3 pin is made? Did they give me the wrong sencor?

    • @CatalystReactionSBW
      @CatalystReactionSBW  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing is wrong with street pattern at all. At the track, it is less risk to upshift if you push down with your foot as it cannot get trapped at full lean, nor can your foot get bumped by the track and involuntarily move the shifter at full lean. Many great racers use street shift but we all have a choice and some of us prefer GP shift.

    • @andrewlawson3798
      @andrewlawson3798 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are some great points Dave I appreciate you summing that up for me man. Now I definitely understand why some may gravitate towards running that setup. I probably still wouldn't run it my self. But yeah I could see people fearing a accidental snag in a lean or a wheel lock up at 2-300kmh
