The Italian way - I think I am figuring it out ! #16

- Italy and my rustic Italian farmhouse renovation in Le Marche region of central Italy. I clean up the wall to expose the rustic old original stonework which makes for a beautiful feature in the lounge area. The stone and brick fireplace is cleaned out and I reuse a the original stone for the front of the hearth.
My visit to the builders merchants goes well as I order more materials for delivery over the coming weeks. The plastering continues as I try to work out of the corner of the lounge area where my home office will be located. It feels like progress is being made. Having pulled more out for the old barns I am able to clear deeper and get to the old big trees. An ants nest may have killed one of the trees off but I hope to salvage it. I have removed the dead branches and cleared all of the overgrown ivy and brambles. The weather is warming up with the nigh sky being bright with stars on clear nights.
i take the drone and camera out on a tour of Le Marche to show you the region near my house to give you a feel for the space and style of Italian houses.

Welcome to my channel which is all about my big plans to renovate an old disused rustic farmhouse that I purchased in rural Italy. I show you why I chose to buy a house in Italy and why I chose to live in the Marche region over places such as Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo and Puglia.

Hola Richard, another lovely video, and you definitely don't talk too much. We like seeing it all, the work, the chatting, the running about, everything, so don't try to change. As for the fireplace, lay the bricks flat, don't need a high hearth. We have very similar in this house, and it's perfect. Don't try to be too particular, it's a naturally beautiful, rustic house. The exposed brick wall is going to look lovely. Everything you do shows the pleasure your getting, even though it's hard work. We two years in with this property, many years older, not as fit, but love every minute. That glass of wine watching the sunset makes it all worthwhile. Love from our mountain in Spain ❤️
Richard, you'll likely come to realize it's the journey, not the destination, that is most memorable. These videos record that journey.
Just an idea!!!... cement the bricks upright and then purchase a stone slab" the length of the fireplace " to be placed on top of the bricks😊....I'm a retired Stone Mason!!👍
I've watched from the beginning and it feels like you are really getting the hang of everything. The videos have improved and your commentary feels like you are much more comfortable. The drone footage to give us a look at what Marche looks like was excellent. Keep up the good work!!
Another great video. Always go with your initial gut feeling. If you can't say YES immediately, then the answer is NO.
Great video! Love how you talk to us and show us around. Thank you.
I just said the same to my wife.
It’s just a lovely idea to reuse what was originally in the house. Rustic is good. For me it’s not about making it look old. It’s about making it look authentic. You are doing a great job and will have a beautiful home.😊
Liking the longer videos.
I am coming back to your little deck.........somehow you must save it or replicate it. That opening episode when you built it I thought, "why" tiny and out of place, now.... That deck represents to me why you are doing what you are doing.
The brick looks great! Enjoy watching your progress. Howdy from hill country, Texas!
The fireplace bricks are lovely but they seem too high stacked vertically. How about horizontal?
Beautifully made video. A lot accomplished. It's looking great already. Gorgeous tiles and brick walls!
OK, Ok, if i still lived in England, Cheshire to be precise, i would be saying Carry on, Carry on, just binged your videos for the last two days, too hot for the garden at 40c. Great vids, warts, and all.
Keep them coming.
Hi, yet another great video of your continuing efforts. Keep up the good work.
Wish I could double or triple thumbs up a video! Brilliant stuff Richard. Particularly like the drone shots - beautiful scenery 👍
i live 15 minutes from you, in Jesi, i recognized Monte San Vicino from your shot with the beer at minute 9, we share the same view... i'm not from Marche and i think locals underappreciate the region, it's refreshing to see foreigners enjoying it, i really think it's a paradise
Loved the scenic views!
Just do it! Don’t overthink. If you don’t like it it’s not such a huge effort to knock it back out.I think it will look lovely ❤
Brings me back about 20 years when I was getting my bathroom done. Bought 16 boxes of tiles. Loaded them into the boot of my car, parked outside the block where I lived, then needed to get them a) from the boot into my block and onto the staircase, and b) up three storeys and into my flat, on my own. At the time, I almost had heart failure.....and I was in my early to mid-30s.....I needed a bit of a lie down afterwards. Good idea to get the stuff delivered Richard!
What beautiful countryside - it actually looks very similar (other than the ages of the homes, of course!) to Northern California when I was growing up and there were far fewer people in the state (only 7 million at that time). We love visiting Italy and, who knows, we may show up in Le Marche!
Lovely video. You are coming along incredibly well, considering that you still have to day job and all those shopping trips, it’s a lot to do for one person. Fireplace bricks, just go with your instincts, your original plan, the look that you keep envisioning. You can’t go wrong with that. Go for it.
Well, I've just binge watched every episode up to date, and subscribed 👍, and now I'm looking forward to your future videos. I liked that you referenced Martijn's videos, a very different approach and a very different project, but as my house and project will be different from every youtube Italian restoration, it's all insperation, I get ideas from from all the channels, and it's all usefull and entertaining. Keep up the great work, and all the best for the future as you progress through your own particular project. Great videos by the way 👍
Welcome to Marche!
Hola amigo. Me encanta como estas reconstruyendo tu nuevo hogar. Lo estás haciendo maravillosamente. ❤❤❤❤ felicitaciones.
Lovely content again mate, good stuff
We live in Fabriano and just found your channel.❤
In the fireplace, instead of having a line of original stone vertically, how about putting a course or two of ordinary bricks with the old ones horizontally on the top as you're exposing brick on the wall it may tie it together, or render them before topping off. I like your new sawing horse by the way! 🤣
Yes, I agree, horizontally placed tiles will visually tie in with the other bricks in the room and look more harmonious giving subtle repetition.
Vertically they reminded me of broken teeth… I hope you haven’t already cemented them in place? 🥴🤣🤣
Agree. Horizontal would work better as having them vertically, your eye is drawn to them rather than the fireplace as they don't go with the surrounding size and form.
Have heard of people using 'spirits of salts' to clean the cement of of the bricks, it's apparently cheap and works really well to get the cement colour off. Another great video, I like that you are tackling the outside when the temperature allows, it gives you a break and gets you outside. Great job with the plastering so far.👍
Here’s to you, living your Italian dream
I am sure, that I'll end up somewhere in southern Europe myself, but cannot decide between Italy and Greece. For now, I cannot even work remotely nor afford to buy a property, but with every new video my determination grows stronger. Thanks for the inspiration! 🤗
Be prepared for a lot of beauroracy in Italy .
@@nevisscot7697 I've lived in Greece for 6 years... There's no way it can be worse ;).
Синяя плитка огонь!!!! 👍
Hey, I used to live and work in Jesi and Senigallia, if you need painter, stucco or drywall work I can recommend you the guy I used to work, in fact his brother in law lives in the Corinaldo. He is a really good, honest, and hardwoorking guy.
It’s a wonderful thing that you can sit down and enjoy that view to recharge.
You need a comfortable sleeping lounge chair.
You need a Comfortable Sleeping Lounge Chair.
Wow Richard, che riprese 😮❤
the drone shots are beautiful!
Videos are great - pretty much spot on - so relatable and I wait for each one with eager anticipation and I love the mug of coffee in the morning - my italian in-laws think I am going to explode when I do that so nice to see other brits stretching convention on that front! drive through was great - made me 'home' sick - its a lovely area- have a look further down at Fermo/Porto San Giorgio/ Cupra too - all great places for a day trip to get away from the dust! Stones - to me should be flat as they were - try dry laying them as suggested?
I love your videos. I always find myself smiling at your humor. My only suggestion would to get yourself a little utility trailer to tow behind your SUV. Save your car interior and haul more things. Cheers 🍻
I'm a bit late with this one but here goes, have you thought of using brick acid for the final stages of cleaning the brick. They'd come up a treat.
Absolutely loving your updates. 👍🏼
LOL! I have a new expression: "Panic at the disco!"!!! 🤪 Enjoy doing things at your own tempo!
Hey Richard, have you watched any videos from @AtelierMavi ?👀 They have done extensive tile work on their terrace house restoration in Liguria 🇮🇹
You have found your style. A good mix of diy, casual conversation, and ASMR 😉👍
Great to see your progress 👍
Y me encanta que no te dedicas a hablar mucho. Es mejor ver un gran trabajo que distraerse. ❤
Thanks for the tour of the area….would love to have a little place out there. Regarding your fireplace hearth… the old bricks look great, but being vertical looks a little incongruous to the rest of the house… I would try to use them horizontally.
You seem to have the work/life balance down pat which is something that those still participating in the rat race, can't comprehend. Those ppl want everything to be fast paced, which is never going to happen in Italy which of course, you know all about. So thanks for another inspiring video, an amateur who has put his intelligence to work to learn necessary reno skills, instead of just outsourcing everything and getting the job done in 5 minutes. Many of us are exactly where you are, but learning from you and the comments.
I’ve not watched the video yet. Just about to get a brew and settle down. Just wanted to say thank you. Your first ever video (my favourite) inspired me to create my own TH-cam storytelling channel. I was working on the basis that if you could be so entertaining and engaging with your streams of consciousness, then maybe I could get away with it too. I’m working my way towards uploading my first videos and I would never have done it if it hadn’t been for you matey. 😊 Thank you.
And now for your video. I’m excited…😂
beautiful 💕
The colour of your fire in that lighting was amazing, I think you did capture the feeling, stunning.👍
Those rural roads look immaculate, not a pot hole in sight!!!
Enjoying following your journey 👍
Frogs and fire. Panic at the disco. Great episode.
I find making all the decisions myself means I get to the point where I can’t decide anything 😂. I go out and do gardening because I don’t have to think. I just weed and mow the lawn. No thoughts process. If my mind is too full I don’t get clarity. If that happens I just leave it for a few days and go back to it. Normally the decision is easy then.😊
Hi Richard! Panic!...awesome band!
I was excited to see a new video yd and the brick wall looks great!
My son and I watched the giro d'italia a few weeks ago and tonight started the Tour de France (in Italy lol). I was wondering if you got to see any of either of those in person!!?? I keep watching for your town.
Thanks for the drive along with you, it was beautiful. Another great video thank you. 🙂
Love the blue tile color. Advice for the fireplace if you want it: use the firebricks you've kept for the inside of the fireplace and then put the tile for the raised part (apron) that extends from the fireplace. You would come out about 40 cm more or less. The tile and the firebricks should be level with each other. You'd have to build up under the tile to get them level. For a really professional look with the tile work you should get the trim pieces. Also, American country girl here, I'm glad you're enjoying country living.
Hi, Richard, In response to the fireplace dilemma, I'm seeing the nasty red brick box GONE! (Far too 70's Italian expediency - only IMHO). Also, rip out the chimney breast. Then the use small flagstones you've been playing with laid flat like an old Roman pavimenti and plonk the stufa on top of them. All this with just a simple 6" black pipe set against your shiny tiles as a background (easily cleaned backdrop to the stove) to just above the stovetop level and then plain white flat wall where the chimney breast currently is. What's the win? Loads more space, clean lines, heating efficiency and you can then use the rest of the tiles to pick up the blue theme elsewhere (kitchen splashback perhaps?) We ripped a similar fireplace out of our tiny villa in Puglia and we haven't looked back. Greetings from Kidare in Ireland. Keep going!
Loved the fire and the stars, wow. Love also how you're sharing your struggles as you go through all of this. Refreshing. Keep going and don't worry about being perfect. Perfection is a poor yardstick.
Yes Riccardo, keep it going. Great progress and I'm happy on the way you're settling in our country.
Painting the fireplace brick surround white will look great! Loving all your work so far 💪
Great video again, loved the shot of the stars going over the house
I think it’s a good idea to have a bungalow because of earthquakes.I was in 2 in Sicily years ago.No damage but..
That night sky shot was beautiful!
Like a Boss. I know it's expensive and hard work but having been there myself it will all be worth it. Cheers from the USA and one who has been in a situation similar to yours.👍
Airbnb in that shed - you've made my day, Richard 😂 British humour is unbeatable. But I think you can take 1.50 euros a night. It has a garden, after all. Entertaining vid as always.
Great video Richard
Brick wall will be beautiful
Fireplace and using the bricks in it will be so great
Love your time outside and relaxing such a beautiful place
Love drone views of area
Thank you for sharing your progress in your projects
Take care and see you in next video ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I am watching from South Africa and so enjoying this journey. I love doing DIY and I also battle with the concepts of things. I would dry fit those blocks in the fire place floor first. That way although you have spent the time it will be clear in your head as to Yes or No.
Rich, hi! your rendering is coming up trumps(good), Yeh? you stress to much, your still doing fine. Lay the stones in front of the fire place they'll look gr8. if not rippem out, plan b?. I think things are moving along fine. "a dream in progress" Cheers. Next ep please!!
Love the channel, great videos...but you need some help! You got a lot projects your trying to tackle at the same time! God bless you!
Loving the rustic look, Italian tiles are beautiful 😊
Hello Richard. Nice video. You are wearing the Azzurro t-shirt, just watching the uefa football game between Switzerland and Italy, so I guess now you are an Italian and shout for Italy 😂
I am very astonished about your camera equipment and drone etc. You manage everything and the videos very professional.
Did I miss your video about the new chimney on the roof? (Metall) What stove do you have inside?
Wishing you good luck as you move on. Thank you for showing me Marche when I cannot be there.
Good to catch up Richard take it easy and have a good week
Wow 🤩 amazing going..keep at it ..soon all will be complete & so looking forward to seeing your beautiful home! Have a wonderful weekend! Thank you for sharing
Great video, beautiful scenery, great choice of accompanying music. 👌
I love the blue tiles, the terra cotta sounds very nice too, i think with the bricks you were working on, it ‘ll make a very pretty picture
The way you film your proces is very nice.
It’s if you’re in contact with your audience.
Very nice video again, thanks for sharing.
Great vid as usual, Richard. A nice relaxed pace and I enjoy your pondering and ramblings as you mentally sort things out in your mind. It's that spontaneous human touch again and we relate because we all do to some extent, or other :-)
The house is going to work out well; unassuming and unpretentious, but tasteful and homely, I imagine. Perfect! That said, onto the 'estate grounds'! :-) A little tweaking of the topography, some key structural planting and some simple hard landscaping to tie it all together and then suitably highlighted and edges softened with some interesting herbaceous planting. The whole will look awesome! 👍😀
Might I suggest you start keeping an eye out for trees and plants that catch your eye. Take a pic and note the time of year. Have a wander every now and then through garden centres, nurseries and public gardens. All will bring inspiration. Local advice on climate and heat and water stress tolerance will be invaluable and gardeners are always a nice, friendly and helpful bunch 😊
Don't forget tho': the more you have/own, the more it owns you! Keep it simple 👍😁
Keep up the good work, Richard, you're doing a great job.
With that view I don’t know how you drag yourself away to get things done. ❤❤
I would scrounge up some money to hire a tree service crew to trim up / prune all the trees and take others down where it doesn't make sense.
Hello Richard, I’m not sure how you don’t get overwhelmed with all the different jobs you are going at the same time. Have you worked with terracotta tiles before? If they are unsealed you have to be careful with the installation. Keeping them clean and not letting any mortar dry on the tiles is important. If the tops are finished by being coated that would help. We used to wet the bottoms of the tiles to prevent them from drying out the mortar to fast and not giving you time to work with them. If the sizes and thickness aren’t the same from tile to tile you have to make the adjustments with mortar depth and grout joint. Cutting the tiles isn’t difficult but if you could rent a wet saw that would help. Good luck with the project. Thanks for another good video.
oh wow just look at those views! What an absolutely stunning part of Italy. I think that's just jumped up to right near the top of places I've got to visit.
Italy is crazy beautiful!!!
Так интересно как преобразится дом и территория))) В ожидании следующего видео 😊❤
Great video! Both content and length! Keep it coming!!!
Starting to look great keep up the good work
Don't know your vision, so don't want to give silly ideas. But I do wonder if drywall might serve you in some locations. You can always create a textured surface on it. And with furring strips, you could run some things behind it. But, best wishes to you. It's a big project. I do like how the brick wall turned out. nice.
If you bend the corner on the top left edge or corner where you pull over from on the trowel, it lets you get the cement or plaster smooth without the corner digging in.. a plasterer friend taught me that one 😊😉 Great stuff 😎
Spritz your wall down with plain water so the render bonds together better, you’ll get a more even finish. You don’t need to leave it long before you float it.
Hi Richard, stand the 2 bricks at the ends of the hearth, but lay the intervening bricks flat. They don't have to be perfect, that's part of the charm. Try a wire wheel on your drill for the brick wall, just hit the bricks or it may remove too much cement/lime? (beats a hammer and chisel) Anyway, keep trucking! Cheers from New Zealand.
It's coming along nicely, Richard! Great to see progress with every post. Random question: What's your line of work when you're not wrangling derelict (but charming) houses in the Italian countryside?
Lovely and very good job, I didn't know that I will be so attached to your videos. After all, you can level a wall for tiling or coating by a thread it will be easy for you although its old technic. With all greetings from Baghdad to Italy 🇮🇹 ❤❤
Great jobs getting done
Beautiful drive through your car ride
I really enjoy your videos, for me they are credible, telling it like it is, doing up a house on your own in a foreign language. Don't worry its goi g to be great and i think the tree will grow back, nature is very resilent
Beautiful time lapse!
Nice video Richard ,only one complaint/advice, when you were scraping paint off the bricks at the end you made a mistake (no dust mask) your beer will taste of dust ( sorry mate I just felt if your wife was there she would tell you off or remind you!!!! ) 😂
Starting a new project can get bogged down by overthinking. Trust your instincts. If you have to redo something, you just learned a lesson. Learning is good thing!
Great to see an update. Keep charging away at it.
Hi Richard an emotional one for me as you stopped in the lay-by just past my old house on the Arceviese for the Drone. Giacometti as well, I know them well as you say they can get anything, they do jobs as well remember. enjoyed your trips out AN is just lovely.
those stones are beautiful and *rustic* and you did a good job on cutting them to size. Not sure about the vertical stacking. What’s about laying them horizontally and creating some sort of 2 steps? Painting the outside white would look great, but if you’re planning to have an open fireplace that would catch a lot of smoke and dust.
Like your style of video a lot, keep them coming!
Hi again Richard thanks for the reply, loved the whole video especially the drone footage. Personally I think the bricks need cutting in half to lower the height in front of the fire place and go up on an angle at each side to meet the brick sides of the fireplace.I think the exposed brick on the outside would look nice the way it is maybe paint some clear brick liquid PVA or something to keep the dust down.Anyway excellent video love the house and I can see the potential and I can visualise what it will look like when it's done.
Beautiful! L'Italia e' bella dappertutto! 🙂
The area around your home and surroundings is so tranquil. We all need a break from Teams! About your fireplace, do you think you could you share a picture or sketch of what you would like it to look like ?
Hi Rich,
I think you are looking for rustic but can’t accept it unless it’s perfect rustic like a show piece.
The floor tiles for example look great to me - why change those.
Anyway it’s up to you to do what you want to do but just do things rather than prevaricating then you will learn much faster. Love the journey thanks for taking the time to do this
Rustic #25 😂 love your style 😊
