  • Finally! After weeks of benchmarking 6 graphics cards, I have collected together the data to see what might be the best GPU for gaming on a Windows XP machine. There are some surprizes, and hopefully it'll be useful info for anyone wanting to play their aging CD/DVD game collection on an actual purpose built PC. I hope you enjoy it - this took a long time to put together! The next video will be my 'Ultimate Windows XP gaming PC' video..
    Second upload of this video, as I noticed on playback that i'd put the wrong results up for 3DMark 2001 SE! Fixed in this one though. Phew.
    Details on how to install the modified drivers, or how to do them yourself if so inclined, are in my follow-up video here:

    Nice, i was planning on a high end XP build, i have a i5 4690k, and was thinking of getting a gtx 780-ti for it. Since that's the fastest officially supported gaming card. But i found the moddified drivers, and see the 970 is a very nice performance. And i happen to have one on hand which is just collecting dust right now. Thanks for the driver, and the review :)

    well spoken , nice vid. you cant beat 980ti powa but the 960 can be so cute.

    • @TheVanillatech
      @TheVanillatech ปีที่แล้ว

      960 was a disgrace. I waited for it, because I didn't want to spend £315 on a GTX970, but after the delayed release the card was so gimped and so over priced, I ended up buying the 970 anyway! Even an R9 270X beat the GTX 960! And the R9 280X, which cost 30% less than the GTX960, absolutely destroyed it! Despite it being a rebranded 7970Ghz on ancient GCN architecture.
      The 980Ti was a brilliant card, but it cost £560. Sure it was super powerful, but just 11 months after releasing it, Nvidia dropped all but critical fixing support for it in their drivers. One of the most anti-customer moves they ever made. Imagine spending almost £600 ($800) on a brand new card, only to find a few months later, in the eyes of Nvidia your card was no longer relevant or worth supporting...
      My friend was a lifelong Nvidia fan, one of those stupid people who bought Nvidia NO MATTER WHAT! Until that happened to him.

    I think the Titan X would be the fastest possible card to stick in an XP system, although the Titan X only has a small amount more CUDA cores than the 980TI and the Titan was treated more like a professional card and every one I've ever seen is the reference design with the blower cooler, I think EVGA shipped a factory OC'd version but I think they were mostly stock with a stock cooler, a stock 980 TI and Titan X were pretty much always neck and neck in benchmarks, so a factory OC'd 980TI like the one you have compared to the Titan X would probably come out on top.

    The AMD card is worth keeping if you ever plan to use an XP build on an (U)HDTV, as the Geforce drivers only allow limited range colors via HDMI under Windows XP for some reason whereas you can get Full RGB at 12bit per channel with Radeon drivers.
    You might not get ultimate performance at super-high res (or MFAA), but you'll get better picture quality and I can't think of any XP-era game that wouldn't reach 4K60 anyway.

I'm 44 now, and everything is so powerful it isn't too difficult to run games at decent settings any more. But back in the day, trying to build a PC build to play Crysis for example? That was a lot more fun than it is now. There were so many new technological breakthroughs in gaming hardware and so on that it was quite an exciting time to play around with different parts. These days everything seems to be evolutionary updates - 'same as last year - just a bit faster'. Back then it wasn't evolutionary - it was revolutionary.

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU's for example came out around 2006 so you could have easily had a Core 2 system with full XP support from the manufacturers. Digging around online it seems Ivy Bridge chips from 2012 are apparently the last cpu's with Win XP support? So I guess the most modern officially supported hardware would by an Ivy Bridge system with a GTX 960?

      Interesting. I thought the most modern Nvidia card that can run on XP was a 980ti - with modded drivers of course. I don't have a 1030 to test, but I've never seen XP drivers that would work with it. If you could point me towards something I can potentially investigate? But everything I've seen says there is no driver support for that card in XP besides the generic driver used to get into the system.

    Making the AMD card sound like its garbage, considering how much older that card is compared to the nvidia cards you are putting it up against, its honestly doing quite good for its age, and would explain the power draw.

      Well benchmarks never tell the whole story do they? I should really have done some testing on it to find it's best performing drivers first to make sure it was represented better! I believe I added it as competition against the 960, and it did ok I think 🤔
