What is it exactly that Daemon is asking him to do? "...things the crown cant be seen to do" And later the riverlords came to Harenhall to say they raped and pillaged their homes. In what way did Daemon think this would help his cause.??
He needed their army but he went about it the wrong way. This is the exact reason why he wasn't meant to rule. He should've been sending letters back to Rhanera so the counsel could've made a better arrangement for the two houses so they'd agree to fight with her and not each other. Just showing up and saying I'll burn you if you don't fight for me was of course going to fail. Sending their enemy to make peace was also going to fail miserably. Daemond thinks of himself as Aegon the conqueror but he has no idea how to properly conquer.
Yeah I also didn't understand his plan at all, how was Brackens raiding others was supposed to help him? Both with or without Targ banners. Unless he wanted to blame Brackens for atrocities and became a hero... But he didn't do that
Notice how Bracken calles Blackwood a heathen because they follow the Old Gods, yet Blackwood uses the expression Seven Hells in the next sentence. Almost a perfect scene...
I appreciate how HoTD shows more diversity in the houses thru its costume design. GoT was great for its costumes as well but armies wore more or less the same thing based on the region they were from. But here each house simply supplies what they can afford, which makes for better characterization. The Brackens and Blackwoods can’t afford the full plate armor like the southern lords, instead having only chainmail and metal helms in contrast to Daemons beautifully crafted plate. You understand they aren’t the most important houses, which emphasizes Daemons struggle to get even the poorest of the Riverlords to support him but also shows the absurdity of Daemon escalating a feud between two houses into a crisis in the Riverlands.
Which is completely in the wrong. The Brackens and the Blackwoods are RICH. They own fertile lands in the Riverlands, they can raise more men than their liege lords the Tully's, and they have been wearing plate since it was brought to Westeros.
I just love the look of Caraxes when he lowers his head as Lord Bracken trots away. We do need to, in this regard, take into account just how deeply the unreliable narrative is in Asoiaf. The Blackwoods, for the entire reign of the Targaryen Dynasty, and during Robert's Rebellion, always picked the side that was victorious. Of course they're going to be painted in a far better light; the only time in the entire recent history of Asoiaf that they picked a side that lost was during the War of the Five King's; but we were fortunately blessed with pov's that didn't really show them, as people, being bad or dishonorable.
Bringing a Blackwood to talk to the Brackens goes to show that Daemon doesn't know a thing about diplomacy or handling nobles. He'd make a terrible king. It's like negotiating with the Crips and the Bloods with Klansmen at your back. That would just give them a reason to hate you.
So we get a giant cgi field of corpses for an off-screen battle, then like 10 guys with Daemon in a field. I know these guys are “minor” Riverland lords but I’d expect at least a few more extras.
