2 x De Tomaso P72 Prototypes Howling on Bernina Pass: V12 Sound, Crackles & Demo Run OnBoard!

- They were 'just' some calm demo runs but it was totally crazy hearing that screaming V12, echoing all around the mountains during the 2022 Bernina Gran Turismo. And you can also enjoy how the P72 prototype sounds like from the inside driven by De Tomaso's development driver, Hugo de Sadeleer, with De Tomaso's chairman Norman Choi on the passenger seat!
Recording and seeing not one but two De Tomaso P72s was definitely one of my highlights from the recent International St. Moritz Automobile Week. It was also really great to chat with Norman, Hugo and Jowyn Wong, the designer of the P72, who were all so kind and available to allow me to fix my GoPro inside the cockpit of one of their P72s.
The two cars shown in this video are still the prototypes like the red one unvelied in Goodwood during the 2019 Festival of Speed. These prototypes share a lot with the Apollo Intensa Emozione, from which the engine also comes: a 6.3-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine able to produce around 780hp. The actual development mule is instead powered by a 5.0-litre Roush supercharged Ford Coyote V8 engine which should be fitted on the 72 production cars (with the exception of last minutes surprises..).
Bernina Gran Turismo is an event born in 2014 with the aim of keep the memory of the legendary Bernina hillclimb race of 1929 and 1930 alive. It's held on the beautiful Bernina Pass in Switzerland, on a section of the original route specifically closed to traffic, with the hilclimb course starting from La Rösa (1,871 m above sea level) and ending up on the actual Bernina Pass (2,328 m) after a total of 5.9 km. Back to those years this competition was part of the International St. Moritz Automobile Week, which consisted of a rally, the kilometer race, a skill race, a concours d'elegance and, as a conclusion, the hillclimb race. Since 2021 BGT's organizers decided to celebrate the whole International St. Moritz Automobile Week of those two years with a selection of events which recalled the original ones.

@@bryanst.martin7134. Yes! The 5.0 is such an iconic engine. I had a 1988 5.0, absolutely loved that car. And yes, I realized by the sound it's a V-12, I was just surprised because all the article I have read about the car, says it's going to have a Roush tuned 5.0 Coyote motor. Someone mentioned that these two prototypes have the Ferrari V-12.

They REALLY nailed everything in the car. The aesthetic is straight out of those 60/70s supercars, the engine OH BOI HERE IT COMES. It's a charm for the eyes

@@19Bozzy92 get a gma t50 drivers perspective, and lexus lfa, and coughnnaught 2 liter v10 between driver passenger, and their x20. bmw electric car nound is only one i kno that differentiates between torque vs wheel rpm, revving with no clutch in during launch control simulating noise. electric srt sound will be interesting but it seems too fake now even compared to bmw i4m
Prototypes are based on Apollo IE and have the same Ferrari V12 engine! Production De Tomaso Isabelle will have Ford Roush V8! Just like the old De Tomaso cars...😉

The sound and looks is absolutely wonderful. A quite good mixture of new and old styling. The lines comes definately from The P 68 / Ford F3L and the sound from the TWR Jaguar XJR series group C cars. Nice one!
Yes, the styling resembles the beautiful sport prototypes of the 60/70es as you correctly point out,Ford P68 and Ferrari P3/4 in most respects.

De Tomaso going all retro with their design, very late 1960's Le Mans type design.What shocked me more was a development prototype in RH drive form.Most of these fancy prototype supercars start off life as LH Drive models with some produced as RH Drive for other markets when in production !

Wow, that’s amazing, just the cars without irritating music, many thanks for an excellent video. Those P72’s are incredible. Not sure I like the sound of the exhaust loosely dragging on the road every time he lifts off the throttle though, out of curiosity did Mr Pagani design and build the interior? It looks like a Zonda inside.

Just when I thought the *imaginary* super rich me could survive with just a Koenigsegg or two, it is now very clear that I will need to pretend I also have a V12 De Tomaso.
The real me did actually have a Ford Ranchero GT with a built 351C and polished aluminum De Tomaso valve covers I found at a swap meet. They looked cool and added massive amounts of power as you can imagine.
The bodywork on these is absolutely stunning, and what a fun drive.
