What a nice car! I really love your get in there and make it work with what you have kind of mindset, as opposed to throwing money at problems. And the car seemed to have turned out just right. Really cool what you've achieved with that
One of my favorite things about this channel is how you really try to give the viewer the true sound of each car. One of the coolest porsches ever. Great job Chris!
I hate to say it, considering how modern cars are, but anyone who has not driven a truly lightweight performance car is living in automotive pleasure driving ignorance. I always consider it a treat when one of these well crafted and entertaining videos shows up.
Damn !!! I can almost feel it through you Nicole !!! Truly a pleasure and awesome build !!!! Well done Nicole . And the cars definitely exudes power !!! And the whole essence of a Porsche!!!!
I completely agree. I grew up on Hondas and have built many. But my all time favorite was my 91 civic hatch with a full jdm si-r conversion and a semi built all motor k24/20 frankenstein combo. Over double the factory hp, crazy light with my nannies or assists and the awesome, nostalgic late 80s/ early 90s look. One of the best feeling transmissions I’ve ever felt too.
Agreed. My experience is extremely limited being 6’3” 230 (Miata is a no go) but I did manage to squeeze into my friends Lotus Exige S and it was the best thing ever, even though my knees were touching the wheel. It made my ‘13 TT-RS feel like driving a Hellcat and it’s a small car lol.
When I was younger I had a very clean, low mileage and completel stock 1989 Mazda MX-5. To this day it's still one of my top 2 most memorable cars I've owned. It wasn't quick by any stretch, but it was so much fun.
That young man has built what has to be one of the nicest 356 Coupes in the USA. His skills and design ideas have played very well with the classic 356 body work. I hope to see more of his work in the future. I wonder what he would do with an early 911 or 912. Thanks for the ride.
Amazing video, I can totally relate as I bought a 914 after high school and have been transforming it into a hotrod myself(I'm now 44). My 914 had a type 4, then a 2.2 911, then a 350 V8, then a VW g60 and now has a VW 1.8t big turbo with a Boxster transmission. These cars are what you make them, no one wanted a rusty 914 when I began and now I have haters saying I've ruined a classic, but really I saved it from the scrapyard.
Do you have any content up? I had to sell my ‘76 2.0 4cyl after driving across the country and commuting for two years in it. They have a lot going for them. Always wanted to do a modest engine swap. One buddy called it a clown car, another called the body design “dumpster on wheels” 😂. They look rad though especially the clean interior.
This car is a reason I normally don't like Porsches. They are uptight and over purist. This car has been tailored to be truly driven w/ joy using whatever means were available. I love it!
I 1000% agree with this statement. Porsche owners have become unbearable in their blind devotion to the P marquee and the disrespect and even disdain they show towards other performance cars and even their owners has soured the brand for me. Porsches are wonderful cars but their owners... vary sad. Chris however has managed to create his own car. It's no longer a Porsche. It's Chris's Porsche. I love it.
Not true our neighbors drive their 911 and stacks on the miles and loves to wear it... not like others I know that have crazy cars with low miles. his coupe has over 200K on it and he's a generous guy when I ask to take it for a spin he ask if I will let him drive our 1959 Volkswagen ... he loves the rag top@@abikepeddler
Obviously not all Porsche owners behave in an elitist manner. Nearly every one of my friends now seems to own a 911... They are all decent people. But there is also that group that shows up to weekend Cars & Coffee, congregate together in a little clicky circle and refuse to engage with other car show participants. There's also the "club members".... The Porsche club of America. I attended one of their drive events in San Diego. The organizer had a driver's meeting before the drive where he went over safety and behavioral expectations of those participating. He said "reckless driving will mean expulsion from the event". He then proceeds during the drive to pass other participants on blank corners! The hypocrisy was enough for me to simply leave the event and never return. These are just random examples...
I love this "all expense spared" project that ends up as a fun driver looking like it cost way more. Another great car and builder brought to us by Nicole & the Detour team. Thanks & Happy Birthday Nicole!
I have never been a Porsche fan, they seldom sounded "right" to me for some reason. THIS is cool. The sound is great. The engineering and hotrod creativity is fantastic. Kudos to Chris for doing what works for him. The creativity brings me joy.
This 356 looks like the homologue of a 70s cal-looker/drag-inspired VW bug, I love it!!! The stance and character with the widened rear fenders, amazing
Nicole another great interview, thank you! This young man is introducing others to Porsche in a different and unique way which is awesome! I do the same with Shelbys. I build them to drive and not sit. This gets them out to an audience that don't normally see them in public. Inspire the next generation of hot rodders!
The thing I like about this one is the raw creativity, but also that with all the radical custom, is also all based on Porsche components. It looks a bit like- if a custom builder in 1959 had access to all these parts, this is what you would come up with. Nice job!
Hey Nicole, I hope this message finds you well. I just wanted to drop a quick note to say how much I enjoyed your recent video. It was fantastic, and I particularly loved the humorous touch at the end. Your driving skills are seriously impressive, and the sound quality is top-notch. Watching you behind the wheel was exhilarating - you've got some serious talent! I must say, I'd love to ride shotgun with you sometime. I'm a bit of a car enthusiast myself, and I recently purchased a Velar HSE 250 from 2019. It's an absolute beauty to drive. But back to your driving style and expertise - you're a total badass, and I mean that in the best possible way. You're not your typical Barbie doll - you're the real deal, and it's incredibly refreshing to see. Your videos always have that extra edge, and I can't thank you enough for the entertainment. Keep doing what you're doing! And on another note, I have to give a shoutout to the creator of the Hot Rot - wow, what an amazing piece of work. It's clear that a lot of talent and hard work went into it, and I have nothing but respect for what he achieved. Thanks again for the awesome content, Nicole. Looking forward to your next video! Ubbe
The sound, the technique, the performance of all the craftsmanship that went into this Bandido Porsche 356 - just amazing. As I wrote in a comment to another of your outstanding videos: I envy you guys over there in the US since such a machine would never ever be allowed on the road in my country - which is, by the way, not the only point of envy I have these days. Can't wait for the next detour footage! Bolko from Germany
I’m loving everything in this video, the most the way you understand step by step how the car works and drives. I love that process of progressive discovery that usually is removed or shown as a problem in other channels. It’s organic! Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸 , I’m a fan!!
That sound is awesome! Reminded me of Herbie from the original Love Bug which had a Porsche engine in it too. Sometime glasspack silencing sounds the best - one of the best-sounding V8s I ever heard was a 3rd gen Firebird with Glasspack Thrushes on it - it let the V8 sound through but also had this high-pitched wheezing sound that followed the revs.
What an absolutely cool Porsche! The owner reminds me of a friend when I was a teen named Devereux, chill dude and the mayors stepson. This car makes me think of my Miata, not massively powerful, but a whole package. Everything done with a purpose and tastefully. Love the hard work and story!!
Yay (Yea, Yeah?)! Another great video by Nicole! First! Some Porsche purists probably went nuts when Chris modified the original steel body... I say why not build a car to your liking? I think it turned out great, especially considering he hadn't done that before. It seems he had an idea in mind, and just went for it. The only thing I'd be careful about is going up driveways and avoiding parking lot speed bumps, tearing off much needed bits and pieces. I'm surprised Nicole didn't put on a fake mustache and sombrero when she drove it, for the total bandito effect. Edited... Chris, you know you have made it when Nicole Johnson tells you she is going to 'drive the snot out of your car'. Lesser men would have whimpered and and changed their minds. Great job Chris!
Hello mario here, This porche 356 is my favorite car of all time , But dis bandido is great and its so stuck that the road handling must be very good , i like this car ❤ And yes i am a porche guy i like all kind of porches . P.S Nicole have a nice birhtday and remember age is just a nr .🎉 Bye from mario .
For such a hodge podge mix of parts, it came together really clean. That exhaust sounds great. I've never liked Porsche exhaust sounds, but this one is loud and deep.
Nicole, from the beginning It's really always a pleasure to see you having fun behind the wheel of these unique machines!! everything is always cool in your videos, you, builders, cars, attitudes, music. In short, I LOVE IT. Thanks
When a car, of any marque, is customised with so much attention to detail and such awareness of the heritage it's a pleasure to see. And realising that those early car builders and modifiers, that the purists claim to love, would have done exactly like this young man, sourcing what they could and just making it work. This is a great car and looks right at home on those California roads.
Great episode! Chris is like how hot rodders and car guys used to be before it became so catalog dominated. This is my idea of a fun driving Porsche. A thoroughly enjoyable car that's meant to be driven. Those shots of eastern San Diego bring back a lot of memories. Great drives and beautiful scenery.
Thank you, Nicole, for sharing this build. Chris has such obvious talent and a serious penchant for Porsche. I love it... I can't help but wonder how his Mustang would've turned out had he gone that direction...
Chris, that's truly overtime craftsmanship and ingenuity!! DEDICATION to that thing in the corner.. Just sitting there.. Great Job. Appreciate that experience. As a builder.. that kids got talent! That garage was full of sick builds. Great spotlight
I absolutely love it, specially the sound! ❤ And lest we forget, Ingenuity is also on Mars right now. But that landscape through which you were driving, if it were minus any vegetation, could almost look like Mars, kind of, maybe. 😉
How rewarding would it be to drive that car on the track? Truly a driver's car - precise, but with all the old school challenges like the fifteen foot throw shifter. You ticked all the boxes again Nicole. Great job. Thanks for sharing!
What a great Porsche Chris built, and as usual, Nicole's joy of driving always comes through, and the car owners always seem relaxed while you are doing
I keep going back to this , great to see this man and his passion, so glad I am across the ocean from him , otherwise I would have indulged in a build with him. Great job .
This awesome channel delivers non stop! Thanks guys. And what a beautiful car Chris built... that's a rolling art sculpture and one of my new dream cars. I really like his attitude too. Greetings from Germany
That car that Chris has dreamed up is a ‘paradigm shifter’ in the hot Rod and custom world. It’s well ace! Also, great to hear you both talking together with so much Porsche/car knowledge, which is also well ace!
That was great - thanks! I had an Intermeccanica 356 for awhile - lived in the Valley, and drove it a lot thru the Santa Monica's - Calabasas, the canyon roads - looking just like where you were... A true ride down memory lane.
I was watching the drive and thinking that the countryside looked awful familiar, then I read the description. I’ve been down those roads many times and it’s always a great drive.
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour a friend has 1971 or 72 911 running gear in a crate - he pulled it from a car that was scrapped due to rust. This video is a mini template for a great project if I was able to get my hands on a 356 chassis and body - but I wouldn’t dare do it with anything but a kit :)
Chris has built the best 356...in the world! You...gave it the best workout it may ever see! Mahalo for another spectacular test drive of a spectacular car! Aloha!
Chris, your build is Iconic!!! The statement it makes shows A brash young engineerin genius who marches to his own tune, the sound of your creation is magnificent! Your average age of friends is of no surprise to me ,the build is telling of the inputs these friends shows a maturity well beyond your 27 years! as we age we realize that building with your unique vision gains the personal satisfaction we all desire, and the car is a work of art that has everything needed to secure top finishes in all types of competitive events,Race or Show you have a winner! Nicole knows a winner when she sees one!!! Thank you both for a look at a wonderful creation of automotive genius
This is probably my favorite car that you have driven. Very talented young man. Would love to drive that on a vary twisty road and throw it around a bit. As usual you had fun.
Toocoolsogood 🤓 I dig everything about Chris' Bandido build and your excellent content documenting and letting us know about it! Thanks again, Nicole... 👍🏁
Thank you so much for taking my hot rod for a ride Nicole! Had a blast filming with you and the crew!
We appreciate you and had a great time!!! Can’t wait to see what you build next!!
Love your car man! I built my 240Z in a similar style. The purist can have theirs I choose to do it my way too!
What a nice car! I really love your get in there and make it work with what you have kind of mindset, as opposed to throwing money at problems. And the car seemed to have turned out just right. Really cool what you've achieved with that
Chris, your 356 is the best example of a 356 on the planet. Absolutely love the sound of the flat six!!

What a great car, as a fan of smaller cars with enough HP I loved this episode. Thanks Nicole for bringing this great jewel to our attention.
Glad you enjoyed it! We appreciate you watching!
How rewarding would it be to drive that car on the track? Truly a driver's car - precise, but with all the old school challenges like the fifteen foot throw shifter. You ticked all the boxes again Nicole. Great job. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!!! We're so glad you like it...and yes it would be fun to drive the bandido on a track!!!
Great car, Chris and it's a Bandido! Thanks Nicole.
Thank you too! We appreciate you watching!!!

What a great Porsche Chris built, and as usual, Nicole's joy of driving always comes through, and the car owners always seem relaxed while you are doing

I keep going back to this , great to see this man and his passion, so glad I am across the ocean from him , otherwise I would have indulged in a build with him. Great job .

And what a beautiful car Chris built... that's a rolling art sculpture and one of my new dream cars. I really like his attitude too.
Greetings from Germany
Glad you enjoy it! Thank you for watching!
That car that Chris has dreamed up is a ‘paradigm shifter’ in the hot Rod and custom world. It’s well ace! Also, great to hear you both talking together with so much Porsche/car knowledge, which is also well ace!
Thank you for watching...glad you enjoyed it!
What a nice 356, dude !
The perfect mix between a new school hot rod and an old school resto mod. Well done !
Thanks Nicole for this great episode.
We appreciate you watching....glad you like it!!
Cheers mate love from Australia, one month is a long time but I can tell the amount of time and effort and money that goes into your work.
Much appreciated!! Thank you for watching!!
Beautiful car. Love to see that at Laguna Seca.
That was great - thanks! I had an Intermeccanica 356 for awhile - lived in the Valley, and drove it a lot thru the Santa Monica's - Calabasas, the canyon roads - looking just like where you were... A true ride down memory lane.
Thank you for sharing with us!! We appreciate you watching!!

I was watching the drive and thinking that the countryside looked awful familiar, then I read the description. I’ve been down those roads many times and it’s always a great drive.

Very cool, Chris has done an awesome build on his "Bandido"
Thank you for the comment...glad you like it!!
Man I love this car! That's the dream right there for me. 70's 911 hardware in a 356 replica. What a sweet car.
And can you believe the Bandido is an original body? We love it too!
Gorgeous Porsche - sounds just amazing. Another enjoyable video, thanks Nicole.
Glad you enjoyed it! We appreciate you watching!!
