  • Leslie Michael Grantham was an English actor, best known for his role as "Dirty" Den Watts in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. He was a convicted murderer, having served 10 years for the killing of a West German taxi driver, and had significant press coverage resulting from an online sex scandal in 2004

BBC made him a star but then again they supported and covered up for Jimmy Savile so what would you expect.

The most shocking thing is he only did ten years for robbery and murder, that’s not right regardless of any second chance in life and al the other sick things he did afterwards.

I served with the Royal Military Police ( RMP ) in Osnabrück , Germany. The taxi driver was murdered at the taxi rank on Sedan Str near Belfast barracks.
Grantham was housed in Scarborough Barracks nearby. The taxi drivers skull was kept at the Royal Military Police Training Centre, Rousillion Barracks, Chichester. In 1986 the skull was returned to the family were it was buried with the taxi drivers remains. Great posting . Thank you for sharing

It is one thing being given a second chance in life, it is another when a plum job lands in someone's lap. Couldn't the production team find someone more deserving and decent. How horrible for the family of the guy he murdered to know that he only served ten years and then he lands himself a nice little job while decent people work their fingers to the bone.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'he shouldn't have been allowed to become an actor '? What a strange thing to say, why not? He was in it from the very first episode so nobody would have known at that stage that it was going to be s "top soap opera' not that that makes any difference anyway, it was still a ridiculous statement.

He was a deeply unpleasant individual. Peter Dean who worked with him on Eastenders was scathing of his behaviour on set.
He was insensitive enough also to take the role of a soldier in a televised version of the murder board game Cluedo.
This brought up the case he was convicted of with the drivers family and caused them more pain at the time, he couldn't care less though.

I've always assumed that it was fairly common knowledge to those around at the time as the story was evidently widely reported during his original run in Eastenders. His acting career wasn't quite over after Eastenders, when he left Eastenders he did a mini series for STV called 'Winners and Losers' set in Glasgow (he played a gangster). He did also return to Eastenders some years later for a month or 2 where he was finally killed off in the show.

@@missmuffet3874 Similar to Crystal Maze (combines it with Fear Factor in a way), where you have a team of contestants (usually physically fit) competing in tasks to earn keys to unlock the treasure room. Then afterwards doing more tasks to earn clues to solve the password to unlock said treasure. However, unlike Crystal Maze where you can "buy out" a locked in contestant with a crystal, this time they're in jail until either the end of the key tasks or until the treasure is collected or lost.

Grantham once appeared on Give Us a Clue, and he had to act out something that involved holding a gun.
I wonder now whether the producers put that in there intentionally, for whatever reason.

Difficult question re second chances. We either follow punishment and rehabilitation or we don't. Hard to say yes, you can be a call centre operator; no, you can't be an actor. Proper sentencing would solve some of the dilemma.

It’s such a shame because I really did always have a soft spot for Den, perhaps because I was obsessed with winning the affection of my own violent narcissistic father and Den was actually a whole lot nicer. I wished I was my dad’s ‘princess’ but I go back and watch his death and remember he/the character we’re not very nice men and I need better role models. I do t speak to my father any more though I also resent the fact he’s never faced prison time for several serious assaults and attempted murder, not even after being allowed to work with disabled children and assaulting one of them!!!
