    There is a quote from Himeno in chapter 25 about Aki:
    "Devil hunters get used to the deaths of those close to them that they stop crying, BUT AKI IS QUICK TO CRY, even when newbies he'd been babysitting died... He'd cry in secret"
    Why did he beat the crap of Denji? For him to go, and for him to live. Aki is pretending to be an edgelord, but he actually cares.

    It's kind of funny how you say "Aki acts like he's morally superior" because at the end of the day he can act like that because he is. His housemates are two 6 year old psychopaths and his job is usually full of people out to make a quick buck or seek revenge against devils before either dying or running away from the job shortly after.

  • @deadsoon
    @deadsoon ปีที่แล้ว +64

    His moral superiority gets challenged as the series advances and he forms a bond with Denji and Power, two devil adjacent beings. He lets go of his quest of revenge and even wants to retire. However he was in too deep. So I don't find him annoying; he changed and grew... It is characters that are annoying just for the sake of it that irritate me. His attitude felt justified in my eyes.
    I think a balance between deranged characters is needed in any series, someone needs to reel in the characters.
    Also his side plotline with Angel solidifies just how he truly let go of all the resentment he held for devils. He gave up years of his life to save Angel.
    Aki dared to be sane and kind and got killed for it.

  • @virgilthemob1242

    I never really had a problem with his straight-man attitude or even his holier than thou bullshit. That's what made him the perfect counterpart to Denji's goofy, uneducated and frivolous side. But as I kept reading, I really came to understand that unless he really was that kind of guy in the beginning, we never would have got to see him grow through pain, loss and disillusion and as a result, his passing wouldn't have hit as hard as it did, both for the reader and Denji. I think Chainsaw Man is a story about losing things you worked hard for. Denji tried his hardest to fit into Aki's lifestyle after he was saved from the Leech Devil while simultaneously trying to scatter the clouds darkening Aki's daily life. I think the part that genuinely broke me was how Denji declined Makima's offer to go on vacation together because he had a crippled older brother and a traumatized little sister to take care of. Denji even washes the dishes by himself because Aki's missing an arm. The way Aki smiles when he hears about it and later on during their trip to Hokkaido really says a lot about how much he's grown to love Denji for the great guy he is. Not to mention how he tries to pull Power and Denji out of the Gun Devil mission to protect them. I don't think that if this had always been their relationship, the "snowball fight" would have broken our hearts like it did. Not to mention how it affected Denji. He lost plenty of people he got along with from the get-go, but I think his relationships with Aki and Power were special specifically because he worked so hard to build them and that's why the loss was all the more devastating. That's just my point of view, but the undeniable truth is that he really is best boy.

    • @alopex7430
      @alopex7430 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm pretty sure that is precisely it. Later on Makima even told Denji that she'll be the one who build it all and destroy it all. I genuinely think that the reason why Denji couldn't even grieve for Himeno is because unlike with Aki and Power, he didn't get the chance to build a strong connection with her, in fact right when they start getting along she dies.

  • @CarmelloVision
    @CarmelloVision ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Aki doesn't like Denji because he's a devil, and he has PTSD. That's the point. That's how he got major character development, cared about Power and Denji so much and then died to the thing he was fighting against the whole time.

  • @DBZFANX1000
    @DBZFANX1000 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I wouldn't say that kurapika nessecarrily turns it of it is just that his connections around make him turn it of.
    When you first see kurapika he is like i'm doing this for revenge i won't give my identity and then he opens up but once he seperates from his friend group.
    He proceeds to keep everyone he meets again at arm lenght. Kurapika has friends that are his brake but if you leave kurapika to his own devices he is more unhinged then aki.
    Kurapika has threatenend people on a few ocassions very quickly he is more unhinged then aki if left to his own devices. He was willing to kill melody because she knew his identity.
    Aki doesn't really have that he had company but rather then friends it was work partners.

    This is a well thought out video, thanks for sharing!
    I didn’t really care for Aki when I first saw him, but he really grew on me. I see his dominant trait as protecting others, not enforcing moral superiority- though he certainly does that too. He cried over the deaths of rookies who died in his care, gave up lifespan to save Angel, and finally gave up everything in an attempt to protect Denji and Power. As his character development continued, protecting his ‘adopted siblings’ overrode his desire for revenge.
    Overall, I like him because he’s a flawed person, but a distinct one, and I value distinct personality in characters over morals (a perfectly heroic character is boring).
    Plus, I’m unfortunately a sucker for tragedy.

    I never thought this of Aki in the slightest lol...
    Denji is a kid joing what basically amounts to a military or police force danger level job to get with a girl. His boss, at that.
    HOW CAN AKI NOT INITIALLY THINK DENJI IS A STUPID BRAT WHO NEEDS A GOOD THRASHING TO SET HIS DAMN PRIORITIES STRAIGHT 😂😂
    He wants people to value their life because he values everyone elses except for that of himself and devils.
    He beats the shit out of Denji because Denji is Denji. He treats Power like shit (initially) because shes a devil. He kills devils because he hates them for taking his happiness and that of others.
    Otherwise, he shares drinks with cops and civilian hunters who have families of their own to protect, he has an equal and intimate frienship with Himeno, and ofc cries over fallen comrades. Hes basically the most good person in the series.
    Yes, tough in his love and his hate, but ultimately the most good-hearted person in the show if im being honest. And not just CSM, id say one of the best people ive seen in anime period. I honestly consider him as good a man as characters from other shows like Asta, Deku, Luffy, etc, except i even prefer him because he has room to be flawed instead of just "embodiment of the shows themes of what ideal good means" -the character. Hes like if those shonen protag characters grew up introverted and then underwent the trauma of losing everything sasuke-archetype style.
    Sure, hes put up lots of barriers and walls to protect himself, including but not limited to his preference to scare someone out of public safety rather than risk losing them down the line, but hes a man as good as they can come.
    Thats how i see him at least. I never saw that scene as him actually thinking of Denji as any less than him or some "moral high-ground" moment. He just thought, pretty reasonably id say, that Deji was making a rather stupid decision.

    He's a human being who has watched his entire family die and lost almost every colleague/ friend. The only thing allowing him to cling to any semblance of meaning in his life is his revenge story. He's on a suicide mission and he knows it, if he has to beat somebody up and spit on them while their down so be it, as long as that means he doesn't take anybody else down with him. At least that's the way i see it lol.

    I don't see this as problems, but rather as layers to Aki's character. His inability to empathize with others that he sees are inferior to him is a very real thing among ourselves humans, that's just another part of the Aki is, doesn't make him better, but definitely not a negative point to take away from the character when this is really "reasonable and realistic" behavior

    Hearing this at first I was prepared to defend not only best boi but best character Aki. But you adressed my defense in the video, him wanting to those bad stuff to rookies so he himself wont end up trying for them down the line.
    In that case let me address the persisting problem you mentioned, why go the extra mile and act superior ALL the time. As far as any "in-universe" arguments go i can see why you dont like him for not turning it off like Kurapika. But from a more holistic viewpoint Fujimoto probably realized Aki would be a more fun character to read if he had that superiority complex.
    So giving Aki that "flaw" puts him -1 in terms of likeable in the realistic sense, but makes him way more entertaining in the sense of hes a manga character. So if you see it from that point Aki dont really got any major downsides, Like ask yourself do you WANT Aki to be like Kurapika and deprive us from the fun alley fight with denji & etc...?

    I haven't seen a better character in a long time.
    If you think about it, then Aki is not as simple as the rest of the characters in a similar genre. His entire character does not end with his backstory. We all know how authors like to show the inner character from the memories of the past in order to enrich the character with some kind of trauma and make it fuel for further actions. Aki's story is just a fact. Aki is interesting for his contrast with the rest and his emotionality. With the death of the himeno, we see how hard it is for him to bear the loss. How he cries, regrets and blames himself while saying nothing out loud. He is understandable, because he is closest to the viewer with his humanity, decency and morality. In addition, the most exciting are his actions to achieve the goal. Aki is a player and goes all in every time despite the pain or the curse, so no one can call him weak or adequate. But how will his sacrifice turn out? A Tragedy. viewers will be sorry, because in him we see ourselves and go through his pain.

  • @lfr8666
    @lfr8666 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think my reaction to his beating up Denji was the same: "Wow, fuck you too, dude! You deserved those nut shots." That may have been more in sympathy for the newly freed Yakuza child slave, but even if Denji couldn't play Tragedy Bingo, trauma does not equate to moral superiority.
    I am glad Aki has become more fleshed out and is bonding with Denji and Power -- he's a big brother, as you say. And secretly very empathetic, I get the argument that he was harsh to save Denji's life, even if he was an asshole about it. I dunno that he'll be my favorite, but I'll definitely shed some tears over the guy.

    Aki is a flawed character. Everyone in CSM is flawed dude. Aki watched his family die right in front of him. They died because of a devil. I cannot defend his attitude (he deserved to be attacked by the testicle devil) but I can understand why he acted the way he did in the story and I felt awful after I saw what happened to him near the end. Aki is not only flawed but very tragic. I mean did you even read the manga?

      The only person who is the closest thing to being flawless is pochita, who is a devil as well. Out of everyone in chainsaw, his goals and ambitions are so pure and without any mal-intentions. I do respect Aki. He is not perfect but he does care about his people. He hated Denji and Power in the start because he hates demons (knowing about his past I think it's also PTSD aswell).
    But in his end he wanted to buy his entire life for the two. In the first time we have known about his life count. 2 years. I think they lived together for some month. Then he even touched Angel Devil. 2 months were stolen by this. So Aki got 1 year or something?
    In the end when he talked with Makima in the beach he was like: "I know I will die but Denji and Power deserves a life so I have nothing to lose".
    It was so sad after this. He got a new family but no hope.

    Akira and Denji are great foils in how humans ruined Denji's life and how devils ruined Aki's life. They're both extreme examples of why one side is worse than the other to measure which is worse so that the reader can decide this for themselves. If Aki had his life ruined by humans instead of devils, he would have become like Denji while if Denji had his life ruined by devils instead of humans, he would have become like Aki. Denji eventually gets to experience both and that is/was Aki's purpose. I love how subtle yet effective Fujimoto is with this and allowing Aki to still be a character despite having such a heavy role.

    It's an interesting subversion. Most shonen treat whatever the main cast as doing as being super awesome, and it'd be totally cool to live in that world and do it too, right? Not CSM. The fact that devils can and do appear at random and cause wanton death and destruction is not quite as fun as it sounds when you personally have to deal with the fall out.

    I havent read the manga, only watched the anime but... I find Aki such a bore, the most interesting thing about him is the sword contract, and its not that crazy. Hes easily my least favourite character in CSM, HOWEVER, the beating he gives denji in the alley has a dimension that a western wiewer easiliy might miss. He calls him "chinpara" (translated as thug) which actually is the lowest level yakuza possible, to the point that other yakuza dont recognise them as their own, which denji totally is AND speaks AND acts like. So he has a point, kinda

    i feel like youre viewing aki in a very… negative way? a lot of what you said is (kind of?) true, but i honestly never saw him as a self righteous asshole and i dont think thats the point of his character. hes very multi faceted. he hates denji and devils because his whole family was killed by one right in front of him. hes internalized that, and now hes out on a suicide mission to avenge them. everone in his life that ISNT useful to him in that way is irrelevant to him, and he doesnt really care if he has to punch someone to get the point across. he doesnt value them in the same way he doesnt value his own life and things keeping him from said revenge.
    hes so human in literally every way even though he tries to turn himself into a weapon for his revenge, and thats what makes him weak. he gets easily attached to people, he cries when they die even after working in public safety for so long. every good character is flawed, and aki is IMO one of the most likable characters in csm simply because of HOW disfunctional yet empathetically human he is
    the flaw you mentioned is one of MANY layers in his character

    SPOILERS:
    __________
    I do feel that it'd be fair to extend Aki's harshness to not just being a crude defense/learning method to bring up characters like Denji and Power, but also as a selfish defense mechanism he walls himself with given his trauma. I find it fairly believable that he's only doubled down on being a hard-ass level-headed guy to an irrational extreme since his family's death, especially since it was a moment of vulnerability when he finally opened up to his brother right when they died. He may ultimately still be scaring recruits for selfless reasons, but treating it as solely a selfless act doesn't cut it for me either, whereas focusing on that context and how he's hardened himself does.
    Maybe I'm just stating the obvious, but that's what makes his cyclical tragedy whole for me as he starts to open up again over time. There may also be something to be said about how Makima could have skewed Aki even as early as that fight, given we know later on that she had already been controlling Aki at that point. With how apparent Denji is in trying to get close to Makima when Aki first meets him, it stands to reason that Aki, being possessive of Makima, is more aggressive towards kicking Denji's ass so hard specifically.
