A happy New Year to you too Neil. That was a real surprise. Yes, I've always heard of the legendary excellence of the E II. Do you think I could use one with my glasses on?
I've been using this model for a year or so. It replaced my 16 year old German bino which was very bright thanks to its Abbe Koenig prisms and FOV that was the widest back then. I couldn't live with it's pretty severe CA (even though it had FL in its model name) and kidney bean distortion. This Kowa has none of those issues. It's beautifully built and I do make use of the filter feature. I have one caveat for potential buyers: the rolling ball effect. I find myself making a conscious effort to avoid panning. Apparently not everybody experiences it so mileage may vary and try before buying. I couldn't. So I find myself back at square one: still yearning for that alpha glass.

In some cases the edge-to-edge sharpness is also mentioned, somewhat less than the best of them all (again the Swarovski NL Pure), but on the other hand it is average to the rest. And with regards to the rest of the mechanical (focus wheel) and optical (sharpness in the center of the image, sweet spot, color, contrast, brightness, CA control, flare / glare / stray light control, geometric distortions, close focus distance...) characteristics, the general opinion / consensus is that the Kowa Genesis Prominar XD 44 are at the same level (or similar) as the "Alphas" in some of these characteristics and even above them in others (which also happen to be the most relevant optical characteristics for me and what I value most in binoculars.) Hi Francis, happy new year! 🎉 Not the Levant, but the right hemisphere... within a 2000 km circle:) I've been guessed to be hailing from every single brunette growing nation on Earth, most bizarre guess being THE PHILIPPINES!!! 🫨
Nice to hear from you, V :) So glad to hear you’re enjoying the New Year. I hope it is a prosperous one in those important ways. It feels like a mixed New Year. I’m more optimistic than usual but fear there are a lot of conflicts and disputes far from being resolved with the ability of involving more countries / raising other simmering tensions... Your accent sounds familiar but hard to pin down. I suspect I’ve not met anyone from your origins to be sure. Listening again, I hear different mixtures sometimes familiar accents. I suspect the Latin hints comes from learning those accents of English. Thanks for the clues, I don’t know distances well, but I would say NE of the Levantine, approaching Europe... I’ve gotten into the habit of playing videos as fast as still legible, and forget how it chipmunks the sound. Well, in your case Levintines ;)
@francisfrancis4219 I wish I had your optimism. I don't see any reasons to believe that sanity, reason, and decency have a chance in 2024. The good news is that if we make it on the other side with intact US and a "mostly peacful" Europe, that would probably mean that the good guys (AKA the lesser evil) have prevailed, while our dear leaders the Global elits have taken a serious setback. Cheers 🍻 , to another year living in interesting times, and may God keep us all! Now it's time to have Dave start on my Mojito. 🍸

Perhaps the ShadowQuest is an exception because of its top-of-the-line position?
Perhaps the attention to detail has proven too cost prohibitive to the bottom line and that's why they discontinued it? I don't know.
What I do know is, beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but that 1951 test target doesn't lie. Prior to this review of the Kowa, the objective fact that the ShadowQuest resolved better by a full element is the one thing that kept me from selling it despite the features that frustrated me.
Have you ever looked through this model of 8x56?
Hi Francis, happy new year! 🎉
Not the Levant, but the right hemisphere... within a 2000 km circle:)
I've been guessed to be hailing from every single brunette growing nation on Earth, most bizarre guess being THE PHILIPPINES!!!
