I've been a builder for many years and have seen quite a fair bit of sheds. The plans in ryan's package th-cam.com/users/postUgkxB7IXYxLzb_Ichhe45zM3Im5xfEiSp9vB have some of the nicest looking sheds i've seen in a while.
I do think there should be a National Trust that provides at least SOME of the funding for the preservation, that helps out the people that take on these enormous and insane projects, seeing as the rules are so strict and the buildings are being preserved for future generations of Britons. Or at least organized groups of volunteers to go around to all the historic houses being preserved and help with the labour ... as part of an accreditation system/ apprenticeship program. That would be a win-win situation! (Create jobs, promote ancient skills and help everybody out).
@Mark R The laws regarding listed buildings are so strict and often so prohibitive cost-wise, that people cannot afford to do the renovations and the houses MEANT TO BENEFIT from restoration often fall apart/DON'T get renovated (BECAUSE the rules are so restrictive). The reasoning behind the strictness of the rules is that these buildings are historical and MUST BE PRESERVED AUTHENTICALLY (for 'future Britons'). Thus my suggestion that those attempting to do the work be afforded help by the very people who are setting restrictions. (The comment wasn't about THIS specific build, but about ALL listed buildings. Not MY choice of house either).
This poor man has been working so hard mostly by himself and you keep saying how slow or not done yet, he has done a grand job! So happy to hear your praise!
That was my farther, the film crew were just trying to add fire and drama to the episode. They even tried to make my mother cry - was very reluctant to give them anything. Hated filming at the house. They were responsible for some of the slow developments during the filming. But thank you for the praise, my farther appreciates it!
In 2015 my motorcycle and I flew (Air Canada) to Paris and spent 70 days exploring western Europe. I included Great Britain and Ireland and made sure that I visited as many manors and castles as would fit into my schedule. I am still amazed at the number of historic building still standing and even more amazed at the documentation that still exists - treaties, wills, laws, agreements of all kinds - from centuries ago. I now appreciate the saying "While Canada has too much geography, Britain has too much history." Hang on to your history. It is so valuable in many ways. By the way George - Nice touch with the books you present to the owners.
I've been spending much time with these restoration shows. I absolutely loved this particular episode. The castle is 100% lucky to have new owners such as this family. History has been saved here.
Wow, this is such a task to take on especially being grade 1 listed and such a phenomenal outcome and on a limited budget, fabulous job all round and what a fabulously historic home! Well done to all.
Living the dream. Well done Simon and Victoria. When Simon told Mark of his plan to hold a Mediaeval feast and invited Mark along, who would've guessed it would be so soon? Very entertaining and satisfying.
This is possibly one of my favourite restorations I’ve watched recently. What a change, I’d never have thought he’d have plodded on and got it done. Congratulations to the family! 😊
i work with these houses , and this one was actually in wonderful condition , the mullion windows etc etc , the work in that beautiful hall was just cosmetic , it was a great find
Gosh this is gorgeous. I’ve always said that if I ever make it big and have a ton of money, instead of a modern minimalist mansion, I’d invest in a beautiful old home such as this. History and beautiful architecture, I love it so much. As a history nerd the people who restore these amazing places are amazing.
Amazing house and restoration. So glad to see they didn't redo the inside in a modern style, like most people seem to do. But, I have to say, I'd really like to hear the story behind those mannequin legs sticking off the window sill😊.
They've painted a large portion of the house exterior white...really sad. That stone survived all those centuries to have someone come along and slap paint on it. They should've sealed it and left it.
@@momsterous That isn't paint. It's Lime Render with a Lime Wash over the top. It allows the building to breathe and protects the stone beneath it. It's traditional. (It's expensive and difficult to work with). So ... they didn't just slap a coat of paint on the building.
A house like this can be a huge burden but it's also a privilege to grow up in a house with such a rich history. Just imagine the stories these walls could tell!
non zodiacal cancer sickness isn't for myself & males & animals & us & us aren't oceans... GOD Loves you, Simon, George, & George's John, Aussie Loves from Canada
If I could buy one in France, of about that size, I'd go all out and do it. I love the old buildings, b/c of the generous use of stone. They were built to last and here they are centuries later, still earning our love and devotion.
Wow, what a place. I’ve never wanted to live in the UK when it comes down to it, because of the weather. But, this property I would’ve made an exception for. The land, the ceiling in the great hall are spectacular.
Amazing piece of architecture history. They took on hard one and nailed it. Literally restored everything back to its original state including humans that banquet.
These are the most intriguing series. I LOVE learning about people taking an old place and making it a beautiful workable home. Looking at George Clarke is highly satisfying as well!
I share everyone's passion for old buildings, history and antiques. And I have ancestors from Wales and learned a lot about the Norman invasion. Well done!
Amazing restoration. The medieval hall was extraordinarily in good condition so in a way it also helped in making their restoration comparatively easier.
How lovely George and his company’s provides a book to the family of the history of the building before the people bought it and during their restoration.
the grand hall room! wow! the original was already gorgeous with this absolutely amazing wood structure of the roof, but they've done such a beautiful job! I love it !
What a find…Thank Goodness for him…I completely LOVE the Excited Cherub like historian….He’s very informative and his enjoyment of it all raises the game for me…
I also love old buildings. As a child we lived in a house near Braintree Essex built in 1432, the house we live in the US was built in 1793 and the building we’ll be living in in Italy was built in 800. 1200 years ago. It’s part of the town wall and was the lookout tower.
I woulda teared up had he held up a pen when he showed the room the book and said you all can sign your names in it cause you all helped to make the manor come back alive. That would have been as the host says . . Fantastic!!!
On the outside of the house, I prefer the look of the natural stone to that white finish coat they've given it. Remarkable, though, that they've accomplished so much on a relatively small budget. And anyone can respect Simon's passion for stewardship of history. Good on Simon and Victoria.
@@0nurbis That white render is no longer so bright, clean and perfect, guaranteed. Render ages and it will blend into the other parts of the house well. They probably used render to increase the insulation in the part of the house they live in the most. I live in an 800 year old stone house in Italy, and trust me, render improves the inside comfort of the house through all types of intemperate weather.
@@0nurbis Chances are that's how it looked when that addition was built. Considering the time and effort he's taken to maintaining all the original history and the fact that it's not painted but they used the original lime render it was probably required. He even went so far as to remove the remodel that covered that original fireplace because it wasn't original to the building.
I wish they'd commented on the maniken/dummy sitting inside on the wall in the window (?). Those bare legs sitting there made me chuckle and wonder about the story behind it! What a thrilling building!
On this episode I wanted the host to fade into the background more and listen to what the owners had to say. I feel that he kept cutting them off when they really had interesting things to day. The expressions of the wife said it all to me.

His energy is contagious, I am excited and it’s not my property lol Mark
Me too! He's great! He loves it so much. Adorable.
If he recorded lectures about just about anything, I would listen to them.
I love that they kept so much of the history of the home and didn’t over-modernize it. It’s breathtaking!!
Agreed. I hate it when the "save" a historic building but they reduce the inside to a solid white box as though it were some cut-rate condo.
Since it is grade 1 listed, they couldn't over-modernize it. Grade 1 listing means both inside and outside had to be preserved as much as possible.

Impressed right away with the building because it was so square and plumb. Simon's humor is great.
This is an awesome episode. I love that they checked the rest of the grounds to look into older structures in the ground. Quite remarkable.
